Alerick here, this post is going to be about making some gold on the side in Ulduar. As most of you may already know, Ulduar was released in patch 3.1 during Wotlk, and by now it’s a fairly old instance. However, there are a few aspects of Ulduar that can make it highly profitable. I was reminded by this when a group of my guildies and I came in here one night after a raid and decided to knock out some achievements, seeing as there are simply a tonnnn to do here.
Engineering
The first, and fourth bosses you face in Ulduar, The Flame Leviathan and XT-002 Deconstructor, can be skinned by all engineers once all loot has been retrieved from their bodies. They have a chance to drop some highly valuable items such as Titansteel, Saronite, and Cobalt Bars, every Eternal, and items like Volatile Blasting Triggers, Cobalt Bolts, and Overcharged Capacitators. The Titansteel bars often fetch prices of up to 400g on my server, seeing as they are pretty rare nowadays, and their materials are often even rarer. Also, 12 of these are required to make a Chopper, which is a whole lot.
I find that on my server the Wotlk bars and materials in general are holding their value simply because less people are leveling through Northrend, and choosing either the dungeon finder or PvP leveling instead. I have been consistently selling eternals I had stockpiled and whatever I can get from Flame Leviathan for anywhere between 30-50g each. Particularly Air, Fire, and Shadow. The Volatile Blasting triggers, and Cobalt bolts that can be skinned from these mechanical bosses are key reagents for leveling the Engineering Profession from 375 to 450. Also, 40 of the bolts are required to make a chopper, and if cobalt prices are as high as they are on my server, picking them up for free in Ulduar is definitely worth it. Especially because you can sell the Triggers, and Bolts themselves once they have been already crafted for much higher than you would have been able to sell their raw mats. Lastly, the engineering item Overcharged Capacitators can often be found in bulk by skinning him, and you’d be surprised how quickly they sell because they are required for plenty of engineering crafted items as well as two different quests in separate zones in Northrend, “Just a Few More Things…” and “SCRAP-E”. All of these lucrative items can be skinned from those two bosses in Ulduar.
Last time I ran Ulduar, I made between 1,100 and 1,600 gold from just one trip through the first wing of Ulduar. Don’t be surprised while posting these items if there are none already on the AH, these items are pretty uncommon, and no competition allows you to set your own price. I actually got three Titansteel Bars last time I did this, and no competition allowed me to sell them for a good price quickly.
Enchanting
As an added bonus while running Ulduar, if you’re an enchanter you have a chance at picking up two different weapon enchants, Blade Ward, and Blood Draining, randomly off of any boss or chest in Ulduar with between a .5 and 3 percent drop chance. I know these Wotlk enchants might not seem like much, but I’ve definitely seen a few geared 85 tanks running around with the Blade Ward enchant on his weapon, and the mats are very easy to come across if you can find some decently priced titansteel bars. Infinite dust, which is the most expensive of Wotlk enchanting mats on my server, isn’t required to make it, just 4 Abyss Crystals, 8 Greater Cosmics, and 1 Titansteel Bar. Good look running Ulduar, and I hope you make a whole lot of gold doing it!

Good tip there,
Don't forget to mention the chopper mats that can be picked up on rare occasions by engineers though, could either save u a couple of thousand gold in production, or earn you some if you undercut the vendor prices.
Cheers.

Also worth mentioning that any class at any gear level can solo FL, even at 25 man. Doing it 10 man doesn't take more than a few minutes, including wormhole and trash clearing time, very good g/hour

Alerick said... September 6, 2011 at 10:28 PM

The 25 person leviathian has the higher drop chance for the engineer mats when disassembled.
Its something like a 12% higher chance to get a chopper part.

Very good tips -- these are interesting, and a great reminder of some gold sources that might otherwise be overlooked. The post is also well-written. This is the kind of quality I hope for on JMTC!
Quick thought regarding the herbs in the Freya room...Frost Lotus used to be the main reason to keep a lockout open and farm that room. Now that Frost Lotus is no longer a high-value item, it probably isn't worth the bother.
