Mommar here.
This week was a vivid reminder of an age old adage. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.
On many servers there were level 25 guilds being sold. By itself this isn't shocking, many players
have decided to leave their guilds for stronger ones. Players have started their own guilds with other friends. Guilds collapse for many different reasons.
The strange point was that it was many times one player selling these guilds. This was a big red flag to see from other players. Then posts up on the official Blizzard tech support site that there was an exploit being used. With the removal of the daily guild reputation gain some players were going into specific dungeons and resetting bosses. (No, I'm not going to tell you which ones and how it's done).
For me, I"ve never seen a major problem with ingenuity in taking advantage of something like this. When it becomes a danger is when the powers that be at Blizzard don't take as kind of a view. There hasn't been any reported bans as of yet. But when the ban hammer arrives, it will not be pretty.
Our uncles at Blizzard are notorious for waiting and then without warning strikes down exploiters of the system. With a lot of complaining and whining afterwards. Usually to the deaf ears of 'you should have known better'. To be honest, they are right in the idea that players should have known better.
Players are always looking for ways to get ahead of a game. And as gold goblins we are always looking for the bigger, better deal. Level 25 guilds could sell for 25k up to 250k gold depending on the server. That's a lot of gold for a few hours work using the exploit. Rolling the dice at a game is also taking the chance that something will go wrong. In this case knowing that a questionable method of 'cheating' is getting you ahead, you take your chances as you roll your dice.
No amount of money is worth not getting shut down from the system. Common horse trading sense will put you ahead of those that look to fiddle the system, and pay the price with their forced wow vacations.
