Being on the edge of gold goblin money making tactics can be a slippery slope. One persons opportunity can be seen as taking advantage of others.
I've always been a proponent of playing on the lack of motivation of players to get certain items. The posting of basic materials easily gained from vendors like Ice Cold Milk or Dust of Disappearance has been a stable income for many gold goblins.
Where the line to me must be crossed is the out and out attempt to fool players, especially new players, into purchasing items that are completely worthless.
While I was doing my daily search on the Auction House for deals I saw a player had started to list items from the vendor in Shattrath City named Griftah. The engineers became very familiar with this vendor because he was the one that sold the Hula Girl Doll for their Epic Turbo Charged Flying Machine. He also carries some items of comedic value including:
A fool is born every minute according to Mr Barnum, and as gold goblins we look for many fools to line our coffers. But I do believe that there is a limit to how much foolishness we can play with. Reputation becomes very important for money making opportunities. The balance between profits and your good name can be stunted if taking advantage of players occurs too often. Players may overpay for a crafted item in the excitement of finding it. They may slip up and pay for an item at exorbitant prices. These are the choices that either can be given mercy (by refunding the cost back) or pocketed as being a lesson learned for the player. What I cannot see as being advantageous is to actively try to fool another player.
This may sound hypocritical because one of the natures of being a Gold Goblin is to take advantage of players and purge their pockets of gold. But just the same as learning new lessons in gold making, it is our responsibility to keep a specific standard of honor. Stepping over that honor to make more gold takes a little bit of the fun out of the game for someone else.
Everyone has a choice, whether you believe in an anything goes atmosphere or that there are areas not to delve into. That's the nature of playing in Warcraft. Everyone chooses how they will conduct business. But keeping an eye on your reputation for being a straight shooter or a con artist becomes just as important as finding that next gold piece.
