As I was reading different news related websites I stumbled upon an interesting story. It seems that
a parent in a foreign country decided that his son had spent enough time playing on Warcraft. So instead
of being an actual parent and limiting his sons activities. The parent hired a cyber hit man to grief the sons characters all over Azeroth til they became frustrated and quit.
Admitting to myself that this was both creative and wrong. It spiked the gold goblin in me to the idea that this idea wasn't the best to earn gold with. Blizzard has been haphazard with their enforcement of no griefing policies when it comes to stalking players. Many stories have been passed around about bans for 'griefing' other players by following them and killing them on PVP servers.
When my server was much stronger on world PVP there would be epic battles as groups would raid cities and people would run to the rescue. Darnassus tended to be the most popular of places to plant players in and cause a ruckus along the server world. Many cyber enemies were created with this PVP battles and many players became hated enemies along the times.
But I can say that it never crossed my mind to hire people to hunt someone til they became frustrated with the game. This would be crossing an unwritten etiquette rule of sorts that were created between players. Now I'm sure that people will read this news entry (found here) but I would hope that players would decide it isn't worth the possible loss of account access and general scorn from the server population.
Everyone wants to make real money from their gaming addiction. Diablo presented this possibility with the Real Money Auction House. And there is a black market for players to sell their characters once they are finished with them. But to me getting paid to hunt and stalk a player til they quit a game just does not feel like the gold goblin way.
Good Luck and Good Hunting

With every new patch new recipes arrive. Some of them are drops from raid bosses. Others are purchasable through different means. New recipes mean new opportunities for profit.
Unfortunately you aren't the only one that looks to get new recipes. Every player with a profession is looking to get ahead of others in providing items for raiders and players leveling. The important part of this is how you evaluate a new recipe.
If you were working on your Blacksmithing or Leatherworking profession you knew where to get your PVP blue patterns. During the cataclysm expansion these were easy money makers. This occurred because many crafters didn't want to put the money or time into crafting and selling these. With Mists of Pandaria these PVP patterns have become much more commonplace because they were used to bring the professions up to maximum. With these items becoming much more common the price was driven down considerably. The PVP pieces have come to the point that they are much less profitable.
Every so often a new pattern will arrive on the AH. Your skills in being able to determine whether this will be a profitable pattern becomes that much more in demand. Selling one or two will very rarely be able to recoup the investment you made in buying the pattern. But selling 5-6 of the crafted item can easily pay for the pattern and also add a handy profit into your pocket.
When spotting new patterns, determine just how much in demand that pattern will be on your server. That should be the main determination of whether you buy the pattern or go ahead and let it pass. Also don't forget that you can pick up the pattern and just flip it back on the AH for a few more gold. Go with what your gut and experience tell you to do.
Good Luck and Good Hunting

About a year into playing wow and learning how to make gold I ran into a wall. No matter what I sold I couldn't seem to get past the 90k mark. It was frustrating because my goal of 100k was well in my grasp.
After trying every thing I could, making adjustments for every sale to make sure that I was getting the maximum profit I stepped back to take a long term look.
Figuring out just how much I was selling and how much I was using for repairs, inventory and other minor costs I found a leak in my own personal system. Where I was at 90k in gold, I was well over 100k in actual goods.
With this knowledge I was able to relax a little bit and continue make gold making processes without the pressure of the goal I had set. Ultimately I made 100k in gold and did my own personal celebration (naked run through Shattrath. The key is that I didn't let my personal Gold wall break me. Instead of climbing and falling continually I went around the wall. Relieving the pressure I had put on myself to obtain my goal at that point.
Are you stuck behind your own wall of goals. Do you set your own goals or are you letting your goals cause you frustration and despair? Goals are there to accomplish, but not to deflate your enjoyment of Warcraft as a game. If you are faithful and diligent (quarter word) to how you make gold, ultimately those goals will become nothing but a speed bump instead of a mountain.
Good Luck and Good Hunting

One of the misnomers of being a Gold Goblin is that you have to be great at every facet of making gold. Somehow the belief has creeped in that you must be top in knowing what to craft, high on flipping for profit. A master at farming materials to make gold and also jump on every sale that occurs.
Practically speaking this just isn't possible. You can be good at multiple disciplines when it comes to making gold in Warcraft. But to expect to be the best at everything will drive you completely insane. As you continue on in your gold making career, you will develop your strengths. Those areas that you excel in due to server condition, time management and even enjoyment of an aspect of making gold. These strengths should be the base of your operations and your go to skill when it comes to making gold in the Warcraft environment.
Each discipline comes with its own hills and valleys. But that base you create for your gold making empire will always be there. Once that base of operation is successful you can branch out to become proficient and even great in different areas. Creation of your gold making pyramid will allow your gold making dreams to become reality.
As you enter this weekend sales cycle, build on your strengths. The other aspects will follow suit and give you extra time to become proficient in other areas of the gold making experience.
Good Luck and Good Hunting

It's time to face facts. Looking back at the week your sales have been slow at best. Too much inventory, too few sales. Don't look at your sales sheet because there are red frustration marks and a few Goblin tears staining.
We have all had these weeks. Every Gold Goblin has had weeks that they could not make sales even if they offered the golden ticket in exchange for a few copper. It's to be expected when you get hip deep into sales within the Warcraft community.
The key is to dissect why sales have been bad for that week. Was it just the time of the year that everyone was hording gold for a big push? Did you miss a financial wave somewhere that you should have been on top of and buying instead of selling? Were you zigging with your products instead of zagging?
The important part is not to let yourself get discouraged. One or even dare I say it two weeks of bad sales will not break your bank. Your merchandise will sell at some point in the future. Your inventory will shrink and that bank account will return to the black in no time.
Just be patient, and keep your head above water. And reposition yourself for the next week. Learn from your mistakes and trust your honed instincts.
Good Luck and Good Hunting

JMTC: Iowa branch got struck by flu bug this week. There were good times that I was able to put together an article and some days that getting out of bed sounded like a really bad idea.
Included in all of this was a minimum amount of logging on World of Warcraft. But out of this lack of will to log on to finish up anything but the basic chores it reminded me of time management.
Whenever you look to start or even continue your gold making career. Time management is the first thing to check off on your list to master. There are days that you will only be able to log on for a little bit that day. Other days you will have some extra time to work before having to go to family functions. Then there are thos magic days that the family is out, clouds part and you have all day to longue around and work at your own pace.
Myself, I have three different sets of tasks to perform depending on my time constraints and ability to invest.
Short: (30 minutes)
I only do my three transmutes/daily crafts (Inscription, Jewelcrafting, Alchemy). If I have any time I will do a quick scan of the auction house for quick purchases to flip.
Medium (1-3 hours)
I choose 2 to 3 of my top selling crafters and do their normal listing routine and crafting. If I only have 1 hour then I use the top seller as the number 1 priority. Second hour I work with the number two seller down the list.
Long (3+ Hours)
This obviously is a full listing of all of my auctions, crafting items that will sell (PVP, weapons, speciality enhancements). Also included is my scanning for items to flip for a profit and resetting any markets that need to be rebalanced for added sales.
The time frames are estimates. Many gold goblins don't want to spend three hours working on Auction house sales. There are days that I have three plus hours to play that I just look do to a short day and then go to finish up dailies. These are always dependent on your own adjustments.
Setting your own time management expectations will allow you to work quicker and more effectively in both short and long term time investments.
Good Luck and Good Hunting

Mommar here (again, someone else is going to be writing these things? You've miss me too much)
About a week ago I entered an article called Profit Calculation 101 - GPH. It was chuck full of math parts, digits, symbols that only fed to the small math nerd in all of us.
But there was one thing that I hope you caught that was wrong with the calculations. A couple of people wrote to me about them. The math was correct, but it was all dependent on a perfect circle between crafter and purchaser.
Think of this as the Gold Goblin version of the circle of life (No, I will not be singing the song thank you). A crafter obtains the raw materials. This is done via the auction house, contacts with your own cartel or farming them yourself. The crafter makes and prices the item for sale on the open market. These are the only parts that are directly effected by the crafter.
The problem with the GPH equation I offered and our perfect circle of life is the need for buyers. Value is a subjected issue when it comes to crafting. Any real life collector knowing what their doing will tell you that an item is only worth what someone is will to pay for it. You can have a 100,000 dollar baseball card according to the Beckett's baseball card manual. But unless someone writes you a check for the money, it's worth nothing.
The same idea applies to everything that a Gold Goblin crafts. A Gold Goblin producer can make neat items from all of the expansions. From Mechano-Hogs to Copper Bars can be produced continually if the materials are available. But the value is only worth what someone is willing to pay. You have a minimum amount that a vendor is willing to pay for an item. So that can be considered your base value for an item, but do that too often and you will be a poor Gold Goblin.
So our perfect Circle of Gold Goblin life has to be developed with not just the production of items, but the knowledge of who is going to purchase the item. There are certain items that you can list over and over it's a relative guarantee they will ultimately sell. But as an expansion continues, the profit margins for each of those items become less and less. Demand becomes less and less as players purchase vanity items and upgrades.
That knowledge that we search for, knowing the ebb and flow of people buying is what sets our standing on the food chain. The idea that we can list the right items, at the right price and continue to produce gold out of raw materials.
Okay, I admit it, I started whistling the song as I was finishing the entry. Ignore the writer, he got a little dust in his eye.
Good Luck and Good Hunting

If you have read these articles for a bit you've heard my story of why I started learning how to make gold in wow. The short of the story was that I wanted to be productive for my raiding guild and try to obtain patterns and gold to advance the group.
Selling to your guild mates is a tricky subject. Some guilds charge for everything. Guild members sell crafting items or potions. Some mages will even sell access to their water and food creations. Other guilds have a completely cooperative attitude when it comes to guilds services.
With the guild ranks, gold for the guild bank became much easier. With rank 16 guilds receiving an automatic deposit into the guuild bank with each looting of a killed mob. (Cash Flow Perk). Before this a guild member had to directly deposit gold into the guild bank. From this repairs could be deducted depending on what the guild master had allowed for guild members.
The idea is just how valuable is your guild when it comes to your gold making experience? Many times guild banks are full of items that just sit there for a long time. Gaining virtual dust that other players might find valuable. Sitting down with your guild master and working out a deal to empty out some of the less useful items. You even have the choice of working out on a commission basis or just buying the items outright.
The one caveat with something like this is that you should want to stay in the good graces of your guild. If you put on your gold goblin hat and put the squeeze on your guild for a few extra gold, they will remember this when you need something. An extra gold piece is not worth bad feelings between guild members.
This was one of the reasons for my personal gold making I decided not to sell to fellow members. The only time that I broke this rule was when someone was taking advantage of the guild. If I find items that I have a difficult time selling (some glyphs, older gems etc) I would drop them into the guild bank. Many times on purpose I would drop items that were in demand by guildmates for their own use. Meta diamonds are always in demand. This was during the Wrath expansion and I took a look at who had been taking items out of the guild bank. I noticed that all of the raw meta diamonds I had placed in there had been removed. Not a big deal since I figured they were being used to level.
I took a look at the auction house and noticed that all of my meta diamonds had been undercut. Unfortunately it had been by the person who had removed them from the guild bank. I talked to my guild master and they were confronted. They said they were using it to recooperate the cost of the leveling of there jewelcrafting. I had a problem with this since I had no intentions of suplementing someone's crafting with my production. Ultimately they left the guild in a huff.
Another time I broke my rule for not selling to guild matest due to abuse by another player in the guild. They had just recently been brought into the guild and were asking everyone for items to 'level'. Being in a friendly guild many people were donating. But even in the most friendly of guilds there comes a limit. Going with my gut feeling on everything I started to sell at cost the items they were looking for. Jumping onto another toon that the player didn't know not from the guild I told them I had heard 'rumors' they were selling items. Getting them to tell how they were 'taking advantage' of their guild wasn't to difficult. In this case instead of presenting my evidence to the guild I just talked to the people he was buying from and made sure that they were getting full value for their materials. Once again the player left the guild shortly after.
Selling to your own guild can be tricky at best. You have to measure both your motive and the motive of your fellow guildmates. Keeping a healthy attitude between each other can be beneficial to both.
Keep what you want in mind and whether the risks are truly worth the rewards. Sometimes not selling is just as beneficial as a room full of gold.
Good Luck and Good Hunting

Sometimes getting lost in the maze of suggestions, hints, tips and tricks are some basics. This assumption that somewhere in the past writings that I and others have done on this site that we explained a basic concept that of course you read. You being the loyal readers of my missives and such.
But every so often there is a need to dust off the basic concepts we use as Gold Goblins to help both with new readers (and I do enjoy new readers) and the JMTC veterans. One of these concepts is the idea of why we use the 12h model when listing.
There are three ending times you can use when listing an item. 12h, 24h, and 48h. All of these have some viability when posting. With 24h and 48h posting it is the idea of listing and forgetting. The problem with listing at 24h and 48h is that there is an increased possibility that the item will be undercut. Especially on volatile markets such as glyphs and crafting materials. Once your posting is undercut then it has to wait it's turn to be purchased. All of the other items ahead of it will be purchased before the chance of your item to be purchased.
Each time you post an item the Auction House requires a deposit for the post. Some items are only a silver (or less). But larger items can get into a larger cut each time posted. The deposit is calculated for factioned Auction houses at
(Merchant Sell Value x .15) 12h
(Merchant Sell Value x .30) 24h
(Merchant Sell Value x .60) 48h
(On cross faction Auction Houses they are more expensive)
This may not seem like much, but if you have to start listing an item more than 5 times (which with glyphs and crafting materials isn't far fetched) you can easily start cutting into profits each time.
The other reason that generally we use a 12h posting is the idea of ending an auction early. On many types of auctions once it has been undercut, the odds drop severely on the chances of selling the item in that round. So a Gold Goblin has the choice of either letting the auction expire, or to cancel the auction and relist. Each relist costs the deposit cost once again. At the height of the gem market crunch relisting 4-5 times during a session is not unheard of for big ticket items. I am not a big fan of just handing gold back to the Auction House so trying to keep that listing cost as low as possible.
There are players that are on time constraints that do not have the time to babysit auctions. So even the idea of jumping on every 12h is not feasible. Once they log off they might not be able to log back on til the next night. In these cases using the listing of 24h is still viable. There is an old addage that says 'you have to be in it, to win it". So if you do not have the time to log on every 12h, Listing for 24h is still viable for long term goals. Profits will still occur with each sale even at using the 24h listing instead of 12h.
Now, After thinking this entire menagerie of numbers out, For those that have the time and ability to work the markets every 12h, I would continue to list at 12h increments. An adjustment can be made for 24h markets simply by looking at the chances for profit. Glyphs and items that are easily undercut would still be more profitable to keep at 12h listing. This saves the cost of the deposit since the longer the item is on the AH, the further down the buying list it will fall. But large ticket items that there may be one or two on the AH, using the 24h listing fee can be more beneficial.
So lets set a new guideline and see what occurs.
Glyphs, items that have a high probability of being undercut - 12h.
High Ticket items, items that are very rare - List at 24h
We will continue to avoid 48h listing simply because it will be throwing away gold down the rabbit hole.
Servers may vary, so don't keep this as gospel. Paying attention to what the market demands, you may move items from among your 12h listings and your 24h listings. Just track them and see which sells better. Researching places like theunderminejournal.com can give you insight on just what will sell within the 12h structure and what will sell in the 24h structure.
Wow, that's a lot of math again.
Good Luck and Good Hunting

Patch 5.1 is on the horizon, and it brings a new wrinkle to the pet battle game.
With the new patch there are stones that will be dropping from wild pets and pet tamers that will allow you to upgrade pets. Many of the are BoP so won't be able to be resold (though the upgraded pets will be able to be upgraded).
The stone that should be looked at for investment purposes is the Flawless Battle Stones. These are the only stones that are being added into the game that are BOE. Their investment potential is going to be based on three different criteria.
1. Strength of Pet Battles on the Server.
Just like investing in PVP or PVE items for resell. A server has to have a strong pet battle scene to be healthy. The best way to look at this is at http://www.wowprogress.com and see where your server ranks. If your server is weak on pet battles, then the sales opportunities for Flawless Battle Stones will be low.
2. Cost and rarity of stones
Even in a healthy pet battle scene on a server, some players are stingy on reselling items. This will be the first item other than caged pets that will be available for sales on the open market. Players might want to hold onto them and see just where the market lies. Or instead of sales, use the stones to strengthen their own pet army.
3. Auction house issues.
Many of the auction addons had difficulty handling caged pets. This had to do mostly with the way that Blizzard tagged the cages to be different that the uncaged pets for sale. It is possible that with this stone there may be issues of listing or buying them. So be prepared to update your addons as quick as possible or even look to buy and sell these and other items sans addons.
This will be a good opportunity to get a piece of the pet battle pie. Upgrading gear has always been a part of Warcraft, and upgrading your sales will put more gold in your goblin pocket.

One of the realities of selling items on World of Warcraft is that you will have bad days. There will be days that your gold flow will be closer to a trickle. These are the days that you could try to sell your soul and someone would ask for a refund.
Bad selling days should never get you frustrated. What they should do is encourage you to figure out why they occur. Is it due to holidays when no one is playing online? A new game drew all the attention? Perhaps even the idea that there is a nice juicy expensive item on the Black Market Auction House that has every ones attention.
The key to any business equation is to figure out where and when your sales occur. Every bit of knowledge can lead to this, and keep you from spending your time hunting for sales that won't occur at that time.
Certain questions you can ask yourself to figure out the schedule your server keeps, and prepare you for the sales rush that occurs.
When is 'raiding time' for your major server guilds?
What time do people log in to look for items?
When do players 'go to bed' and leave the server barren?
There are plenty of other questions that can be asked to gauge the server sales flows and patterns. Riding those patterns can increase your sales and keep the bad days at bay.
Good Luck and Good Hunting

As I'm getting ready for Turkey day this week, it brings to mind a lot of things. Family, friends, people I've known over the years and people that hopefully I will get to know in the future.
This includes people who may have never thought about the opportunities of making gold in World of Warcraft. Many times a week I receive a letter asking me to help them make gold. As always my first question is what are you currently doing now to make gold.
Very rarely do I hear someone start off with saying flipping items from the auction house. Somehow I think this is because the art of flipping for profit has gained this mystique of difficulty. That there is a minimum amount that has to be gained before it's a legitimate money making operation.
Nothing is farther from the truth that the idea that you have to buy a 10,000g item and flip it for 20,000g. Where that is a nice tidy sum and fully possible, many players just getting into making gold don't have that amount to spend. The range of people asking for my advice and help range from having 2,000g all the way up to 10,000g or more. Obviously a 10,000g item would be way beyond their means. But there are plenty of items in the 50-100g range that just cry to be bought and flipped.
Profit is profit no matter how much or how little. Buying 10 items at 100g and flipping them up to 200g nets a nice 1000g profit. Even if you have to list them 4-5 times you still will end up making a profit. Later on as your wealth grows, then you will be able to add larger and larger items.
I've always considered 20% to be a good line for profit margins. But doubling your money even on the small items can add up quickly.
Flipping items is not a mystery, it is a very easy concept to use to add to your money stash. Whether big or small, it all adds up in the end.
Good Luck and Good Hunting

If you were like me during cataclysm you heavily invested in Pyrite Ore. With the tantalizing hints that Epic gems might be prospected from the ore, players went heavily into the red after liquidating their assets.
Kyparite ore is already shaping up to be very similar in investment potential. It's used in purchasing patterns from the Klaxxi quartermaster. It's also used to craft some of the 463 weapons such as the Masterwork Phantasmal Hammer. Engineers can even use this ore to craft a engineering mount (Depleted-Kyparium Rocket). Jewelcrafters even have the option of prospecting these for gems. With a higher percentage of Mid range gems being prospected overall.
So the question for investing is what will become of this ore? The odds are very slim that it will be used for Epic Gems. The Cataclysm expansion version of delivering epic gems encouraged players to run higher level raids instead of just sitting in their home towns and prospecting for profit. Many of the Professions are built to get players out to invest time in leveling. Currently the only two major professions that can be leveled to their maximum without stepping out into Pandaria is Alchemy and Inscription. (technically engineering can be leveled to 600 without any need to enter Pandaria but the materials necessary are so heinous that it isn't a useful part of the conversation for now).
With Ghost Iron ore hovering around the 2.5-3.0g mark on many servers, it starts to look at being an option of investing some gold in Kyparite ore for now. Keeping an eye on deals that might arrive, or taking a larger effort to farm your own could become profitable in the long run.
We do not know what other tricks and treats will be brought on with future expansions, but planning ahead with picking up deals on Kyparite ore can add to your coffers and your profits.
Good Luck and Good Hunting

We have talked about cartels many times when it comes to being a Gold Goblin. Understanding that a cartel could be made up of two people, or a large amount of players. The idea is that you have gathered a group of like minded people to be able to combine your resources and keep track of markets instead of just being a one person team.
But just as you have your days of self doubt and irritation, so will the members of your cartel. That is when a leader steps up to make sure that the group is happy and functioning. Making sure that your cartel is equipped, their needs of items and trinkets sated and even the occasional gift can add to the group loyalty.
Cartels are not inanimate objects. They are living, breathing people behind the keyboard with their own issues to deal with. Whether it's a farmer that isn't able to put in as much time as they want due to personal issues, or a little extra gold as a "bonus" to say thank you. Little things can advance a cartel in the right direction.
I was talking with one of my farmers in my cartel and they were being asked to do some healing type stuff for dungeons. Taking about 5 minutes I was able to see some upgrades that my blacksmith could craft for them. Crafting that shield, putting it in a gift wrap and enchanting took me all of 10 minutes to finish. But that loyalty to know I would be the first in line for new items they farmed made it worth it.
Management of cartels are just as important as management of your own personal stock. The more productive that a cartel can become, the better profits can be shown for just a little work. A happy cartel member is a useful cartel member.
