BMAH Blues Return

Mommar here.

When the Black Market Auction House was introduced with Mists of Pandaria,  there were rumblings in the universe that it would even out the playing field between the gold haves and have nots.

Up til the introduction of Patch 5.1 it was a good tool implemented by the powers that be at Blizzard to remove tremendous amounts of gold from the economy.  Players were bidding thousands and thousands of gold on patterns and very rare mounts.   The plan to stabilize the economy was well on it's way to completion.

Then with Patch 5.1 a new little toy was introduced.   An invitation to an exclusive Brawlers guild.   Everyone loves to be the first in line for something exclusive.   So players bid ten thousand,   twenty thousand to have one of the rare....   well kinda rare.... maybe rare?   When you have 10 invites every 12 hours for bid plus the ability to farm them from different faction NPCS just how rare can they truly be?

But here is the problem that wasn't expected.    Before patch 5.1 there were three slots to fill each rotation on the BMAH.   One was generally a pet (mostly the argent dawn pets),  one was usually either a PVP gear item or a PVE Epic.   The last was generally filled by a BOP pattern.   This gave enough inclination for players to bid and continue to remove gold from the economy.  Now with 10 Blood Soaked Invitations for bid at any one time,   there seems to be only one slot available for bidding and on many servers it seems to be only that one pet few if any want.

I have been skeptic from the start at just how the BMAH would be taken by the gold goblin economy.   Most players who have worked with the economy understand that when you buy something from someone they in turn will buy something from someone else.   This keeps the gold flow coming,  eventually if things are done right coming back to your coffers.   The 'dead end' bidding of the BMAH wouldn't help the wow economy to flourish but would depress bidding on the BMAH.   Now that the majority of slots are filled with the invitations,  the BMAH is starting to become irrelevant to the economy.   There is still the chance that an epic pet or needed item will show up.  But I will not be surprised if a revamping of the BMAH is done in a future patch.   Or the goals of the BMAH will have to be changed.

Either way, hopefully everyone got their invitations to the Brawlers Guild dance and recital.   I've got a banana peel with your name on it.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Brawlers Guild.. Blizzard Your Killing Us Here

Dear Blizzard.

I understand that things change with each PTR build.   I understand that one week something might make complete sense,  when the next week after the coffee and crumb cake high has exhausted itself you might change your mind.  But please keep us Gold Goblins writers in mind.   We already look like fools at times when we type 'your' and you're.   So when we say something is a bad idea to get involved with,  please keep this in mind when you change how something works.  It will save us plenty of time and energy from having to backtrack a previous strategy.

Thank you

A loyal fan.

So now you are reading this and saying 'really?', what mighty change are you talking about.  Is my DPS becoming higher?   Healing more awesome than awesome?   Free gold for the needy?   Nope. sorry,  you are on your own for all of that.  But one sentence in one PTR build has changed anything I have said about the Brawlers Guild and getting involved with it as an investment opportunity.

One of the previous problems as I suggested in the previous entry was that there was a hard limit on how many invitations a player could give.  They could give one invite once they reached level 7.   They could also purchase ones off the Black Market Auction House for an exorbitant price,  but the developers had already stated they didn't feel most players could corner this market.

Now that we know they will drop off of certain NPCs (world bosses and probably dungeons encounters) there will be a hotter market for these.   It's still unknown just how the Blood Soaked Invitation will be completely implemented.  The Powers that be might just change their mind and give them as Christmas gifts for everyone.   But a lot of the market will depend on availability.   If they do drop from NPCs in dungeons and raids,  prepare to be needing on the item and selling it quickly.   The burst of opportunity for sales will be  front loaded.   As more and more players go through these dungeons/raids after patch 5.1,  then the market will become more and more flooded.

So be prepared again and keep digging for information and be prepared to kill some NPCs.  Remember the first rule of Brawlers Guild.   We have no clue about Brawlers Guild.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

How Not to Influence People

I've been told in my life that I do not deal well with stupidity.  Now stupidity tends to find itself in many different forms and cadences.  Whether it's the guy at the door trying to convert me to a religion that I have no interest in,  or the person at the counter at the local store asking dumb questions.  I tend to not handle stupid very well.

I received an email from a reader discussing a situation that they had run into.  They being a fellow gold goblin had posted up some herbs at a reasonably selling price.   Instead of the player deciding to politely ask if that was their intention,  they decided to berate them.   Including some name calling and crass remarks.

Having played this game for many years,  it still surprises me from time to time the reality that just because someone is anonymous does not give them the right to act like the north end of a south bound donkey.  Each of the lessons that I try to teach on this journal is meant to be executed with a certain amount of decorum and dare I say honor.   As has been said many times,  there are players behind the keyboard with feelings and emotions.

When I started playing World of Warcraft I was a mess.   While not going into specifics I was a proverbial hermit that didn't go out that often.   I spent more time in my house than is normally to be expected of a grown man.  It was my safety and my kingdom with limited social interaction.   At the time I was recovering form a physical injury so I wasn't into the bar scene,  or the gaming scene or anything other than books and the occasional chat room.

I had just started a vigorous rehabilitation schedule with a lot of downtime for recovery.  So a friend of mine suggested I look at playing World of Warcraft for recreation and also for the possibility of social interaction. Five years later I still play,  and have become very vehement to my defense of the human nature of players behind the game.

So when I hear of stories such as this is turns my stomach.   In the long run all of these herbs, and ore and epic items and such are just pixels and complicated mathematics on a digitized screen.  They are not real and have no direct effect on how we live life.  But our attitudes and our reactions do have an effect on people.  Whether it is in the positive or the negative of the situation.

I proceeded to explain my viewpoint to the writer that it was more apt this person was having an ulterior motive for their uncouth behavior.  The odds were that the offender wanted them to pull their auctions and post at a higher rate so that they could undercut her.   Later did I found out my supposition was correct.

So why share this with you?   Because I never want my words and my actions to make it seem that gold goblin behaviors would ever encompass this type of attitude.  To be a real gold goblin does not mean that you just make the most gold you can.  It means that you hold yourself up to a higher standard of the game.   You become a diplomat of sorts to not just the gold,  but to the spirit of the game.   Everyone has every right to play the game as they want.   But i would hope that the first lesson that is learned from reading these writings is that we are all human,  and should be treated as such.  Otherwise,  it's time to take a quick look at your life and your values and decide whether you are truly gold goblin material.

Good Luck and Good Hunting.
