MOP Prep: Prepping the Farmer

On the master list of making gold in World of Warcraft,  farming is the second easiest way of making gold right behind questing.   It can become a very simple way of collecting materials to sell either to cartel members or to the open market.   The only cost is your time and the occasional repair bill if you farm at the wrong place or time (PVP servers are especially nasty at this).

Any of the classes can be adequate farmers.   As long as you're able to get to a place that is abundant with materials to sell,  you can become a farmer with just a flick of a mental switch.  Where it isn't required to have a dedicated farmer for your personal cartel,  it gives you a leg up on the competition when materials are not available.   Being able to farm items as you quest in new lands gives a new wrinkle into your collection of profits.

When looking at your farming structure you have normally three different types of farmers.   The Herbalist,  the Miner and the Skinner.   In my structure I've added a 4th one which is my disenchanter/item hunter.   The reason that I believe there should be a distinction in our setup is that farming lower level instances can be very rewarding for both enchanting materials,  as well as vanity items to sell on the Auction House.  My Disenchanter/Hunter is my Blood Elf Warlock.   It's important to have your enchanter be able to AOE mobs in low level instances instead of having to kill one or two at a time.   Druids or Mages are extra strong in these areas.

Currently my setup for my farmers consists of my hunter class having the skinning and mining professions.   My other farmer that handles my disenchantments and herbalist duties is a Druid.    Druids are especially beneficial for Herbalism due to the fact they stay in flight form to pick herbs.   This gives you the ability to be onto the next farming spot while the competition has to wait the 3 seconds to activate their mount (add to this reaction time and you have a good 4-5 seconds head start from the competition).  When areas such as Wintergrasp were heavily farmed for materials,  this gave me almost an unfair advantage over the other farming classes.   Also included was the ability to switch into melee (Cat form and Bear form) as well as having a Boomkin setup (Thunderchicken) for those times I needed to defend my routes.

Your mining and skinning toon selection becomes more of a personal choice of play style than any added advantage.   Hunters,  Druids and Warlocks have continual longer ranges for their attacks,  plus with AOE capabilities they can go through multiple enemies quickly.   Warriors tend to be the weakest in farming due to the need for up close combat.    For personal selection the Death Knight can be one of the strongest farmers,  or the weakest.  Play style becomes a factor with many of the classes.

Dedicated Famers gives you a good boost in your time management and much needed materials for your other crafters.  Whether you have all four farming disciplines covered.  At minimum having a farmer that is linked to what other crafting professions you have with other toons.   Having a Blacksmith becomes stronger with a Miner.   An alchemy business becomes that much more lucrative with an herbalist in tow.

This is where I usually break from the norm.   Profession bags can become expensive.   Each level of bags tends to become more and more exorbitant in costs.    The High slot bags can cost 1000 of gold based on supply and demand.

But if you lower your amount of slots a good amount of savings can be made.   The [Triple Reinforced Bag] (36 slots) costing 1500g.   Looking at one of the lower bags,  the 28 slot Trapper's Traveling Pack can be found at half the cost.   Bag slots were important before Guild Banks became available.  Now the larger amount of slots becomes more of a convenience than a necessity.

Your farmer should be prepared from the start with the magical Gnomish Army Knife.  Besides bags this is going to be your best investment.   Buying enough now while they are inexpensive will benefit you since they will rise in prices with Mist of Pandaria.

The biggest preparation you can do is to have your material farming routes planned out.   Wowhead always has good information on where certain items can be found.  Whether it's a weapon or an herb,  players are your best assets to finding routes to quickly obtain product materials.   A combination of Knowledge and time will put your profits on the upturn.

Farming is going to continue to be strong,  and setting your mind to a specific structure will allow you to pick,  process and obtain gold at your own pace.

Gold: it makes a player better

When World of Warcraft began in 2001. Gold making wasn't on the map.  It was a niche idea that a few were able to begin with.   Auction house buying was young,  and most of the fortunes made in game were from dubious methods (buying of gold,  duplication of items etc).

But fast forwarding to today,  there are multiple journals and opinions on how to make gold.  From farming,  selling,  buying, crafting.  All viable ideas.  But with one purpose,  to make you into a Warcraft virtual millionaire.

The plain truth is that making a large amount of gold in the game changes how you view playing.  Deal hunting and selling becomes a unofficial profession of it's own.  Now with the right amount of gold you can have just about anything you want in the game.   You can almost instantly have a raid equipped toon in under 5 minutes.  You can buy that awesome mount,  or even buy a run to get an awesome mount.   Want a cat,  jump to the AH and you can buy one of your very own.

The benefits of having gold will change the game.  Also it will become a game until itself.   Getting bored with raiding and dungeons (and right now it's not that difficult to do).   The AH becomes a flexible opponent that you can never truly beat.   As the consortium forums say,  gold making is the ultimate in PVP.

As we continue with this journal.  Getting closer to the Mists of Pandaria invasion,  those that are making gold now will have a huge advantage over someone who is just starting out.  It is difficult,  near impossible to get a realm first in a crafting profession without having enough money saved up.  The first BOE mounts and getting the first combat pets require gold to purchase from the AH,  or the time to farm them up yourselves.

So what is the tip for today?   Be ready for tomorrow and the next day and the next day.   Making gold in the warcraft game changes your gaming life,  and it changes how people look at you.    And how you look at yourself

5 habits of sucessful gold goblins

As a overall strategy is developed in making gold with World of Warcraft. Developing repeatable habits will continually give you the upper hand on your competitors.

Building your ethereal function isn't a matter of luck.  It's a matter of repeatable skill bases that are developed or learned as you continue.   Building on one block to another as a pyramid of gold is built.

1.  Set goals.

Many beginning gold goblins flounder around trying to "get lucky" with their gold sales.  Basic goals such as "have enough gold to play" doesn't general give the pleasant satisfaction that you get from arriving at 50k gold,  100k gold even a million gold plus.   Setting goals that build on other levels you have arrived at.   Even the seemingly unobtainable goals of giving a tundra mount to all of your fellow guild members.   Each step to the goal gives you the understanding that anything is possible.

2.  Be active

It's a guarantee that you have no chance of obtaining a gold strategy without being active.   This means to know both the mechanics of the auction house and trade channel.  And also logging in,  putting up your crafted items and selling.   Where a vacation is nice from time to time,   as the game winds down waiting for the beta of Mists of Panderia expansion.   the gold goblin remains active in different markets.   Even if it's a matter of storing up for the upcoming sales.

3.  Think outside the box

A simple sale of a crafted item is always nice.  But at times the competition is extremely heavy.  Where if you add an incentive to the sale (pre-socketed items,   pre-enchanted items, ) you can beat your competition to the punch.  The gold going into your coffers and not into your competitors pocket.

Instead of selling individual items,  selling in bulk.   Selling leveling packets for professions.   Selling full sets of PVP gear.  If you can think outside the normal sales flow,   you create your own product lines.  And your own sales.

4.  Prioritize

What is the driving force of your sales cartel?   If you only have time to post up one set of auctions,  which one will you post?   This is where your knowledge becomes important.   Spend an hour on inscription that nets you 1k gold each time,  or your jewelcrafting that nets 5k gold?  Your time is really what you offer to the gods of warcraft gold,  time plus your knowledge is what sets you apart from those floundering in their sales.

5.  Think long term

Making gold in warcraft is not a sprint,  it's a marathon.   There will be good days,  and there will be bad days with little or no sales.   You will sell 50k one day,  an 5g the next day.   It's the goblin that stares at the future and looks for the opportunities as they arrive,   and is prepared when they show up.   Having stored up material for crafting while others are searching the auction house for each scrap.   Knowing farming patterns and timing to be at the peak of efficiency.   Planning ahead is the gift that a gold goblin must develop.

Your habits is what builds your portfolio and even your reputation of having the right materials,  the right gold monies and the right knowledge.   Habits of a gold goblin developed over time.

Good luck and good hunting

You will farm... and you will like it

Playing WOW long enough and you will hear it referred to as "world of farmcraft".   Between having to farm for gear,  and even at times for materials to sell or craft,  it's an integral part of the game as it's set up.

It also becomes a matter of knowledge and time on how to gain the materials.   Want [Elementium Ore]
to sell or crafting?    Find your favorite spot,  and put on some music and mine your characters heart away.   Need gear for a low geared toon?   Farm heroics and the most recent dungeons for the gear,  and the VP to purchase gear.   It's a part of the game that you cannot get away from.

Personally,  I dislike farming.   I farm the AH for the most part of items and materials i want,  freeing me to either craft items,   to try new strategies or to level toons.     Regardless of what I try,  there are still times that I have to go dig the ore myself,  or skin a mob myself.   It's just the nature of the game as a whole.

It's also the easiest way to make money in Warcraft.    Put on some music,   get into a comfortable position and kill,  mine,  fly to the next area.   Going back over to the AH to put up your loot and then return to the scene of the crime.   It is part of the arsenal of any goblin gold making toolbox.

Almost every gold making guru has a "farming" toon of their own.  Their main existence is to be the farmer for the entire toon cartel.   Having a combination of two out of the three major gathering professions (herbalism,  skinning,  mining) keeps them busy and active.  Making them fundamental to the overall strategy of gold making goblin.

If you don't have one,  make one.  If you have a low level one,  level them.  If you don't want one,  your putting yourself one step behind the competition.   Which is never a good place to be at.

Good luck and good hunting

5 Things you should be selling: Mining Blues

Gathering professions aren't a dead end when it comes to gold making.   Over and above the running around to gather materials,   mining is also capable of transforming ore and materials into different forms.   Forms that can be sold for good profits to material hungry crafters.

So here are five things you should be selling:.  Mining edition.

1.   [Earth Shatter]

Most gold goblins would identify this as a simple conversion flip.  Take one item at x cost,  convert it to 10 smaller items at x + a premium price.  But there are good reasons that this works.  First people will farm Primal Earth and many times only get between 8 and 10 into their bags.    To finish off the last of that Primal farming,  purchasing one or two motes becomes "cheaper" to them than trying to farm the rest.   [Elemental Blasting Powder] is a major leveling agent and crafting for engineers as well.  This ends up being in high demand and can easily double sales as new engineers are leveled.

2.  [Fire Sunder]

Another of the "convert to smaller items" ideas for gold making.   Fire is much more difficult to farm and ends up being in demand by both engineers and alchemist.   Alchemists use the [Primal Fire] for their [Primal Might] transmutes for sales.    Motes of fire are also used by multiple professions for their crafting. With the ease of leveling that has been introduced in game patches,   many toons do not get leveled in mining rich areas of the burning crusade expansion.  Negrand and higher level areas get skipped in the leveling progression,   so these materials become more and more unavailable on the open market.

3.  [Eternium Bar]

A gathered and smelted item from the Burning crusade expansion.  It's highest profit margins are used by blacksmiths to make [Eternium Rod].   Converting the raw [Eternium Ore] into bars will net a good profit from sales both to blacksmiths and other crafters using the item.

4.  [Hardened Elementium]

Used in high level crafting during the Cataclysm expansion,   taking 10x [Elementium Bar] and 4x [Volatile Earth] can get large profits from Blacksmiths and Engineers.    Used in both leveling recipes as well as the epic recipes.  These will make the [Hardened Elementium] continue to be in demand even after the Cataclysm expansion has come to an end until we have moved into the panderia expansion.
5.  [Titansteel Bar]

The king of all that a miner can make,  and continuing into the end of the Cataclysm expansion on,  will continue to be in high demand.   For one reason.   The [Mechano-Hog] (and the [Mekgineer's Chopper] for the alliance) is going to be in continuous demand.    3x  Titanium,  1x Eternal Fire,  1x Eternal Earth and 1 Eternal Shadow.   All three of these materials found during the Wrath of the lich king expansion have become rarer.   Making the titansteel bar becoming more profitable.   Look for this to continue as the Motorcycle mounts become in high demand for new toons during Mists of Panderia.

Ores and converting into bars will continue to be a gold venture as more and more toons are leveled.   Keeping an eye on the market and filling in gaps in demand based selling can bring in more gold to both the novice and advanced goblin.

Good luck and good hunting
