Timeless Isle is a gold mine just for even the casual player.  Spending an hour finishing up the dailies can net you easily 200-400g.  As compared to the thousands that can be made through crafting and manipulating the auction house this might not seem like a lot.

Those that remember the beginnings of the game where a single gold was similar to pulling teeth to obtain.  Players who had thousands of gold in their coffers were rich beyond belief.   Expansions opened up more areas to obtain gold through crafting,  auction house manipulation and doubling of quest rewards when max level was reached.

But at what point does it stop being exciting to obtain gold?   I remember struggling those first 40 levels to obtain enough for my mount.  This was long before Blizzard basically gave you a mount as you hit level 20.  I would squeak as much profit as I could from hit or miss auction house sales and farming items to craft.  Running around Orgrimmar because someone offered a tip for me to craft something from my book.  Each 1g to 5g tip going into my wallet towards my so wanted mount.

Fast forward to now, and gold is not a problem for many.  It isn't even a measuring stick of just how good you are because a player can stumble bumble their way around the world of Pandaria to kill mobs and finish dailies for gold.  The Auction house bristles with large amounts of armor and gear, pets and mounts that are at inflated prices. 

This is where setting personal goals become more important than just looking at the bottom line numbers.  Many players set their sites on a larger than life mount that they want.  With the Black Market Auction House those hard to get mounts become available from time to time.  Mounts from the Collectible Card Game to drops from old instances.  Even just setting a goal of starting from scratch and working your way up to the top.  Anything that gets your mind motivated to go farther and keep your goblin ways from slipping by the wayside.

So what is your goal for the month?   For the next three months?   Are you prepared for the next expansion and just what gold opportunities will be there?

Breaking Through The Wall

About a year into playing wow and learning how to make gold I ran into a wall.   No matter what I sold I couldn't seem to get past the 90k mark.   It was frustrating because my goal of 100k was well in my grasp.

After trying every thing I could,  making adjustments for every sale to make sure that I was getting the maximum profit I stepped back to take a long term look.  

Figuring out just how much I was selling and how much I was using for repairs,  inventory and other minor costs I found a leak in my own personal system.   Where I was at 90k in gold,  I was well over 100k in actual goods.

With this knowledge I was able to relax a little bit and continue make gold making processes without the pressure of the goal I had set.   Ultimately I made 100k in gold and did my own personal celebration (naked run through Shattrath.   The key is that I didn't let my personal Gold wall break me.   Instead of climbing and falling continually I went around the wall.  Relieving the pressure I had put on myself to obtain my goal at that point.

Are you stuck behind your own wall of goals.   Do you set your own goals or are you letting your goals cause you frustration and despair?   Goals are there to accomplish,  but not to deflate your enjoyment of Warcraft as a game.   If you are faithful and diligent (quarter word) to how you make gold,  ultimately those goals will become nothing but a speed bump instead of a mountain.

Eyes On The Prize

The election is over (I voted Thrall myself as a write in candidate), and players are knee deep in the midst of Mists of Pandaria.  

I have always been goal orientated.  From working on leveling,  finishing quests and achievements. Grinding reputation with whatever faction I am working on at that point..  My goals are to accomplish my next step to whatever goal I have set for myself.   Upgrades to my gear to new toys I get to play with.   It becomes easier to view things as step by step towards my goals instead of just being a whirling dervish of inaction or misguided randomness.

This also includes goals in making gold in World of Warcraft.   There is no question that it has become slightly more difficult to make gold in World of Warcraft.   Higher requirements for levelings and Spirits of Harmony grinding has made some items more valuable.    Past techniques such as the Jewelcrafting shuffle have had to become a much more selective process to remain profitable.

But being goal orientated allows a player to set where they want to be.  Measuerments of their own accomplishments based on their own views of where they want to be.   PVP and even PVE raids have unofficial ladders of accomplishments.  But Gold Goblins have to create their own ladders to view when they have been personally successful.

Become goal orientated in your dealings with everyday chores.  Setting those goals will give more meaning to the tedious grinds of listing items,  or grinding out dailies.   Enjoy the rewards once you reach your goals and then prepare to set your next goal for the future.

Mommar has arrived..  With cookies (okay,  I'm really working on a different intro here).

Goals are important in everything you do.   From everyday life to your World of Warcraft playing career.   Setting goals to obtain can be a driving force in your success.

One of the questions I consistently receive is 'how do I make gold'.   My response is always 'How much to you want to make?'.  Without a definitive goal in mind,  you end up floundering in the wind of frustration and failure.

1.  Set daily goals

When I started writing my book,   my attention was just the idea of sitting down and writing.  This worked for a time for me.  But the daily grind of life interfering got to me.  I found one day I would write one page,  and other days I would write 25 pages.   There was no consistency in my writing because there was no rhyme or reason on what production would be done.

In the World of Warcraft gold making,  500,000 is a nice round number.  Most players would be dancing in the streets to make 500,000 gold as they play.   Did you know that 500,000 gold only translates to a little under 1400g a day?    Setting a goal and telling yourself that you want to make 1400g a day becomes a lot more obtainable than just saying I want 500,000g by next summer.

2.  Know your skills

I will fully admit I am not the greatest writer in the world.   I have left some stinkers when it comes to entries here.  But there are items that I am proud of having written.  The one thing I know is that the only person with my viewpoint is myself.  And the only person with the combination of your time and your abilities is yourself.   Players may compete with you in certain professions.  But ultimately they cannot be on at the same time you are,  or have the same skill set of thoughts you bring to the table.  You are a unique gold goblin who chooses your own destiny.  If you're a grinder when it comes to gold, then you can make gold.  If you are a great flipper who can spot deals in a heartbeat,  then you should pursue that.  Perhaps you are the best barker in trade chat with a golden virtual tongue.  Bring that strength to what you do.   Your skills are what makes you successful.

3.  You only fail at your goals if you give up.

You are fully capable of doing anything you set your mind too.  But sometimes your goals aren't always successful.  The beauty of having a goal is that you can continue it on.   A famous wrestler has set himself up to climb to 7 greatest mountains of all time.   He has trained and taken them one step at a time.  Even through injuries he works at his goals,  and knows he will succeed.  Maybe not on the time frame originally planned,  but he will succeed ultimately.

4.  Set your own goals,  don't let others set them for you.

Players both in World of Warcraft and in the real world try to set goals for others.   They say your not successful unless you reach a certain dps.  Your not successful if you don't have a certain amount of gold in your bank.  Your not successful unless you have a porche in your driveway and a redhead on your arm.   The beauty of goals and success is that you set them for yourself.   And that success in your own life is what you build to have stronger and higher goals.   When I started playing warcraft I was excited beyond belief when I made my first 10,000g.  After that I was excited when I hit 50,000g.  I again was excited when I hit 100,000g.   Every goal I set for myself I was excited about.  Not because it made me BGOC (Big Goblin On Campus).  It made me successful to myself.   And ultimately that's who I measured my success on.

Daily goals in World of Warcraft become as important as breathing.   And setting your goals will drive   
you to success not just in your Warcraft career,  but in your daily life.

Mists of Pandaria Preparation: Form a Strategy

In the World of Warcraft, fortunes are made on patches and new expansions. Each new expansion and patch brings the opportunity for you to get gold-capped. Will you be the next in Mists of Pandaria? Now is the time to prepare! This series is about preparing for the next great gold rush in WoW: Mists of Pandaria!

We're finally at the end of the Mists of Pandaria Prep series. We've covered the value of additional alts in your stable, broke down the professions in two parts (1, 2) and talked about what we might stockpile for the expansion while still keeping a balance of liquid capital. Now it's time to tie it all together and talk about your strategy going into Mists of Pandaria.

What is your goal?

Identifying some goals will help you be successful when Mists of Pandaria launches. I'm not necessarily referring to a gold-making benchmark here, though you might find it helpful to set some. What are you hoping to accomplish in the first week? How about the first month or two? Here are some possibilities:

• Shooting for server-first in a profession.
• Maxing one profession in the first week.
• Maxing three additional professions by week 5.
• Capture and train 3 wild pets for sale in the first week.

Let your goals guide you through the early stages of the release. If you have to decided between three gold-making opportunities, but only have time for one, choose the one that matches with your goals. If you have limited capital to work with, spend it in pursuit of your goal.

Shaping your strategy

As you form an early strategy, your goals will play a major part in deciding how to use your time. There are some additional factors to consider as you prepare a plan. The timing of the release is going to be a big one. If it releases in the summer, college and High School students will be on vacation potentially large pools of time to play. If you're hoping to compete in a high-camping profession, this could be problematic. It could also drive initial prices for gathered mats down as they spend time earning gold this way.

There are also holidays to consider in the release. If there's a holiday the week after release and it's required for the "What a Long, Strange Trip it's Been" meta achievement, you can bet there's a newly level 90 monk that will need to complete it to start their journey towards the Violet Proto-Drake reward. Serving these completionists can be quite profitable. Things like the Darkmoon Faire will also factor into your profession leveling thanks to the +5 skill points offered once/month. Here's a rough list relevant to Mists Release of what's ahead:

• Midsummer Fire Festival (June 21 - July 5)
• Brewfest (September 20 - October 4)
• Hallow's End (October 18 - November 1)
• Pilgrim's Bounty (November 20 - 26)
• Feast of Winter Veil (December 15 - January 2)

Layered on top of this, Darkmoon Faire will happen on the first full Sunday-Satuday of the month, so it will overlap several of the holidays by a few days.

You also should consider what others on your server may be doing. You probably know who your main competitors are in your favorite markets. Try to guess what they'll do. If they're going to focus on Inscription with the new Glyphmas selling to Monks and other leveling Pandas, you might want to go Jewelcrafting. If there's not much competition for enchants on your market, you can target this first and try to get an early lead or possibly even a monopoly in the first week or so.

If you're gathering in the initial days and weeks, try to get a leg up on everyone else that's planning to do it. Get some enchants to increase your mining or herbing, or a weapon such as the Zulian Slasher to increase your skinning skill. Those extra points may be enough to get you to the next level of gathering first and get ahead of the pack. That could lead to higher rates of gathering and more to sell, or reaching server first before your competition.

The Stars are full of Gold

For the 5th day straight I was raking in a large amount of gold on my server.   While letting one of my add-ons sort things out,   a conversation started with one of my group cartel members.   We have actively been keeping an eye on Gem sales to make sure that they don't get too low.

The topic of the conversation was how much gold is too much gold.   Both of us had gold capped

before patch 4.2.   And as with many people,   collecting and reposting becomes more of a chore instead of something that's necessary for raiding or PVE quests.   Every mount on the AH is available at a click,  every pet yours for the buying.   Gearing up a raiding alt is just a few clicks away.  Even faster if you have the needed crafting skill to make items.

As warcraft matures,  the economy becomes more saturated with your wow millionaires.  As more gold making websites,  and gold making guides like Markcos gold guide become popular,   there will be a continued amount of movers and shakers on server economies.

Blizzard every so often will issue a "money dump" to level the playing field.  But advanced gold makers will always have an advantage over people who aren't able to amass large amounts of wow riches.   The question is truly what can someone do with their gold.  I"m going to give you 5 ideas to spark some ideas of your own.  Two of these I did myself,  and others were suggested from others.

1.     Buy a specific mount for every one of your raiders (My personal choice is the Mechano-hawg)

2.     Host your own trivia show on trade channel with varying amounts of prizes

3.     Drop 10k gold on a random level 1 player in a starting area.  

4.     Powerlevel all of your alt characters to max level

5.     Buy random pets to everyone in a specific area

There comes a time in every gold makers run to figure out a new way to entertain or challenge themselves.  Creating a new goal besides wow millionaire status will extend your enjoyment in

auction house PVP.    Plus everyone needs a cool show of all their guild members on hawgs don't they?

I first got into gold making because I needed some money to cover my usual expenses in-game. Training, mounts, enchants, gems and other expenses add up. My buddy loaned me 200 gold early on (Wrath era) so I wouldn’t have to worry about not being able to train or repair. I look back at those times now and simply can’t remember how I ever functioned that way.

As I started reading blogs, testing addons and learning the ins and outs of the auction house, I quickly discovered that I enjoyed playing this side of the game. But my first love was still running dungeons with friends and getting into the occasional raid. The problem is I don’t have much time to do those things, so I had to find short-cuts to make it possible.

One thing I've learned on my way up the auction house ladder is that it's important to have a purpose or goal in mind while making money.

Putting My Gold To Work
Eventually, I realized that I had everything I needed to make my life easier because of my auction house business. When Cataclysm dropped, I loved the idea of challenging heroics. Shortly after hitting 85, I wanted to get into them quickly, but I couldn’t afford the time to grind regulars for gear. So I purchased several 359 crafted items and BoE’s to get into the game quickly. I’ve done the same on two other characters so I could enjoy the game the way I want to.

I also love helping out my friends in-game. The buddy who loaned me gold recently celebrated his birthday. He was leveling his Hunter and was almost to 85. I wanted to run dungeons with him, so I sent him the two crafted 359s for his class in the form of wrapped gifts to speed along his journey into heroics. I also like gifting gems and enchants to guildies when needed.

Does it cut into my profits? Yes. But having a purpose for gold-making helps keep me going. I enjoy the auction house game, but I think I’d grow bored with it if there was no other purpose than to have lots of gold. Knowing the purpose of my gold-making also helps me spend it wisely to get the most enjoyment possible out of the game.

The Auction House isn't a total grind for me because there's a reason I'm doing it. It's fun, because it helps me run dungeons and raids with friends by providing gear upgrades and enhancements. It's fun because I get to help others who need it, while making a healthy amount of gold along the way.

So why do you make gold? Is it to purchase mounts, pets or gear? Are you chasing the gold cap? Do you do it just for the enjoyment? Are you trying to dominate a market? Is this your PvP? Or is there some other reason? How do your goals help shape your auction house game?
