Bye Bye... I Will Take Your Gold Now

Blizzard/Activision reported last week that they lost approximately 14% of subscribers in the past quarter.  Unless you do any type of investment in stocks and bonds this would mean very little to the masses.

But if you take a look at the loss of those subscribers it does show that players are starting to get burnt out again and look for other hobbies.  Many times this means players will go and stop paying their subscription,  waiting for the next expansion to arrive.

Other times players decide to completely leave the game.  This opens up a good opportunity for players to grab some extra items to sell,  resell or vendor.

Now this won't require a lot of work on your part.   All you would have to do is keep your eyes and ears open and talk to people who are leaving the game.  Talking to them to discuss what they plan on doing with their items when they leave.   Some will say no,  not interested.  Some will be more willing to give it to a guild member.  Others just want it done and over with.

Even if you are able to obtain one or two 'clearance sales' from players leaving the game your gold haul could be in the 1000's.  I've cleaned out guild banks and players for 1000's of gold in the past.

Just keep in mind that it's a negotiation as well.   Talk to them and explain to them the benefits of letting you liquidate the items for you.  Even throw in the idea of giving their guild x amount of gold.   Whatever points it takes to get them to let you take the heavy burden of emptying their items and pockets.

Also keep in mind that you should be fair with your offers.  If you can get all of their items for free that's great and wonderful.  But if your reputation takes a hit then you will pay more in the future.   That reputation is how people see you and treat you in your deals.

Looking for players leaving Warcraft can be a great opportunity to stack more gold into your future vaults.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Sales Triage

Mommar here.

If you have ever skinned your knee or played a sport you understand a little bit about triage and prioritizing
wounds.   Treating a small cut before treating a more impactful wound doesn't help in the long run.  It could cause the one wound to become infected and worsen.

The same thing can be looked at in your sales.   Any person who sales they never lose money is either selling you something or playing things safe.    Being a gold goblin sometime entails risks.  High risk can mean high reward.  But it also can cause wound that need to be treated.   And too many wounds your empire can start a downward spiral.

This is where Triage economics can come into play.   If your seeing your fortune not growing or even diminishing you should perform a short quick diagnosis to the problem.   Where exactly are you losing gold at?  What items are not selling quickly and profitably?   Which of your items is sitting on the shelf only to be liquidated at the end of their value life?

Triggering a quick fix to these can cause your downward spiral to turn around.   If you are listing items at too high,  being dependent on quoted prices from different websites.  Look to see whether your economy can support that.   Are you cutting raw gems into pure stat gems (+str,  +int, + agi) only to see them sell low and get undercut continually.   Perhaps cutting mixed gems (+main attribute and +secondary attribute) can provide you with more opportunity for sales and profit.

Identifying where a wound is and fixing it quickly can keep your sales from becoming infected,  allowing you to continue at full speed instead of languishing slowly from diseased income.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Lost In The Guild Traffic

A long time ago in a far far far away expansion I used to raid consistently.   This was well before the times of Looking for raid check boxes.   There were two types of raids.  Guild raids and the random pick up raids that happened in trade chat.   I'm keeping from going through the including of having to walk 5 miles uphill in 6 foot of snow to get to those raids.  I'm old what can i tell you.

Many guilds have switched from a your on your own type of raid preparation to much more organization for potions,  weapons and crafting materials.   If you have a well prepared guild there really is no need for gold per see since the higher guild levels allow money to be deposited automatically in the guild bank.

But there is still a necessity to make sure that someone knows who does what.   I still find it interesting to see in my guild where people aren't completely familiar with what crafts player have.   Many guilds switched to a website system where the patterns they have are listed.   Having a simple pad and paper can save you lot of hunting to see who can do what.

All of my guild mates who actually pay attention know that they just need to drop material in the mail and ask me to craft it and the odds are I will do it for them.  If you have been keeping up with my writings and missives you know I do not charge Guildees for these types of services.   I fleece the unsuspecting to be able to provide for those I like (just kidding,  a little bit).

So the question I would ask is where is your niche in making gold?   Whether you are just starting your gold goblin ways or are experienced.  Do you still offer a slot to the guild to help?    Are you a gold expert to help the new guild members have a stable amount of gold for repairs?   Do you have the slot of craftsmen to prepare players needs and gear?   Are you just the information post that people can go to to know where to get things done?   Or do you even show up and say anything?   Are you lost to your guild because they have no idea what you bring to the table?

Being a guild member and being a gold goblin are very similar.  If your name and your items are not on every ones lists of needs,  then you are easily forgotten to others.  Others that may not be as experienced as you or have your capabilities.   The only way to know is to put yourself out there and make yourself known.

And that does not mean a little naked mail box dancing isn't fun also.

Good Luck and Good Hunting\

Finally the end of Cataclysm

Mommar here.

So finally after 5| months after the cataclysm ended and the pandas invaded the last of my investments from cataclysm have been sold.   Having dabbled in low blues,   minerals,  enchanting materials,  a couple of Mechano-hogs and other odds and ends I finished forging,  selling,  repurposing and even some giving away to guildmates and friends of items I had saved for Mists of Pandaria.

After all the numbers are ground out including the giveaways I ended up with a profit range of around 55%.   Not quite what I expected but enough to make it worth the investment.    One thing I found that cannot be seen in the gross numbers is that I enjoyed searching,   working on strategies and overall investing of my gold.   Probably more enjoyment that I would have just from spending to buy items.

Some of the investments were disappointing including minerals.   There was not as much surge in the minerals market from the start as I expected.  Later on while the expansion was maturing sales began to pick up as there were less and less farmers looking at low level materials.

A lot of the 'blame' is laid at the feet of the BMAH.   Players with large amounts of money were looking to save gold for the mounts they always wanted.  While players just getting started were startled by the inflation on items as they were leveling.   This had a wave effect causing players to maybe be less apt to buy items that would be quickly tossed away.

Some servers were much more healthy economy wise than others.  The more players on the server the more inflation could be adjusted and controlled.   And as with any Gold Goblin not all of my investments panned out.   But overall I was happy with what occurred.

Soon it will be looking to invest for the 5.2 patch.   We will be tackling that in the next week or so the more information that is released from players and the powers that be.   I expect a lot of chances for making gold and to make that swimming pool of gold a lot bigger.   Might need to build an extension on it soon.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

How Not To Make Gold In Warcraft

As I was reading different news related websites I stumbled upon an interesting story.   It seems that
a parent in a foreign country decided that his son had spent enough time playing on Warcraft.  So instead
of being an actual parent and limiting his sons activities.  The parent hired a cyber hit man to grief the sons characters all over Azeroth til they became frustrated and quit.

Admitting to myself that this was both creative and wrong.  It spiked the gold goblin in me to the idea that this idea wasn't the best to earn gold with.  Blizzard has been haphazard with their enforcement of no griefing policies when it comes to stalking players.   Many stories have been passed around about bans for 'griefing' other players by following them and killing them on PVP servers.

When my server was much stronger on world PVP there would be epic battles as groups would raid cities and people would run to the rescue.  Darnassus tended to be the most popular of places to plant players in and cause a ruckus along the server world.   Many cyber enemies were created with this PVP battles and many players became hated enemies along the times.

But I can say that it never crossed my mind to hire people to hunt someone til they became frustrated with the game.   This would be crossing an unwritten etiquette rule of sorts that were created between players.  Now I'm sure that people will read this news entry (found here) but I would hope that players would decide it isn't worth the possible loss of account access and general scorn from the server population.

Everyone wants to make real money from their gaming addiction.  Diablo presented this possibility with the Real Money Auction House.   And there is a black market for players to sell their characters once they are finished with them.   But to me getting paid to hunt and stalk a player til they quit a game just does not feel like the gold goblin way.

Time Management With Faction Grinding

Mommar here.

Mists of Pandaria opened up a plethora of factions to obtain experience with.   Golden Lotus,  Klaxxi,  The August Celestials.   All of them have your required door prizes of mounts,  and tabards and even raid quality gear.

But there are so many of them that they can eat up a lot of your time trying to finish them all.   Where you can get a certain amount of gold per turn in of quests,  no one wants to spend hours and hours attempting to finish every daily quest asked from each faction.   With each patch adding more dailies the mountain of reputation becomes impossible to climb.

This is where time management strategy is useful other than just running in to finish dailies.   Figuring out which factions are more beneficial to you and your future gold making will reap benefits quickly.  Blacksmiths will want to work on the Klaxxi to get access to higher level blacksmithing plans including the Masterwork Ghost Forged Blade.

Using resources such as Crafters Tome to plot out not just your mains path for faction leveling but also your
alternate toons.

Keep in mind that each of the factions have a tome that's purchasable at revered that will double the amount of reputation you receive with your other toons on the account.   So if you find yourself needing to double up on rep with future characters paying the price for them will make the reputation grind much easier.

Placing time constraints and concentrating on one or two factions to raise your reputation levels will keep you from getting burnt out on daily quests and allow you to enjoy the other parts of Mists of Pandaria.

Recipe Isolation Sales

Mommar here.

With every new patch new recipes arrive.  Some of them are drops from raid bosses.  Others are purchasable through different means.  New recipes mean new opportunities for profit.

Unfortunately you aren't the only one that looks to get new recipes.   Every player with a profession is looking to get ahead of others in providing items for raiders and players leveling.   The important part of this is how you evaluate a new recipe.

If you were working on your Blacksmithing or Leatherworking profession you knew where to get your PVP blue patterns.  During the cataclysm expansion these were easy money makers.   This occurred because many crafters didn't want to put the money or time into crafting and selling these.   With Mists of Pandaria these PVP patterns have become much more commonplace because they were used to bring the professions up to maximum.   With these items becoming much more common the price was driven down considerably.   The PVP pieces have come to the point that they are much less profitable.

Every so often a new pattern will arrive on the AH.  Your skills in being able to determine whether this will be a profitable pattern becomes that much more in demand.   Selling one or two will very rarely be able to recoup the investment you made in buying the pattern.  But selling 5-6 of the crafted item can easily pay for the pattern and also add a handy profit into your pocket.

When spotting new patterns,   determine just how much in demand that pattern will be on your server.   That should be the main determination of whether you buy the pattern or go ahead and let it pass.  Also don't forget that you can pick up the pattern and just flip it back on the AH for a few more gold.   Go with what your gut and experience tell you to do.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Breaking Through The Wall

Mommar here

About a year into playing wow and learning how to make gold I ran into a wall.   No matter what I sold I couldn't seem to get past the 90k mark.   It was frustrating because my goal of 100k was well in my grasp.

After trying every thing I could,  making adjustments for every sale to make sure that I was getting the maximum profit I stepped back to take a long term look.

Figuring out just how much I was selling and how much I was using for repairs,  inventory and other minor costs I found a leak in my own personal system.   Where I was at 90k in gold,  I was well over 100k in actual goods.

With this knowledge I was able to relax a little bit and continue make gold making processes without the pressure of the goal I had set.   Ultimately I made 100k in gold and did my own personal celebration (naked run through Shattrath.   The key is that I didn't let my personal Gold wall break me.   Instead of climbing and falling continually I went around the wall.  Relieving the pressure I had put on myself to obtain my goal at that point.

Are you stuck behind your own wall of goals.   Do you set your own goals or are you letting your goals cause you frustration and despair?   Goals are there to accomplish,  but not to deflate your enjoyment of Warcraft as a game.   If you are faithful and diligent (quarter word) to how you make gold,  ultimately those goals will become nothing but a speed bump instead of a mountain.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Heat Of The Moment

New years baby Mommar here.

As I'm preparing to ring in the new year via wine and friends.  One thought always comes to mind during the holiday season.   Since they have made it illegal to smack my brother around,  guess I will have to discuss the other thoughts.

My brother is a passionate man.  He has many opinions and ticks in his way of living life.  One of the big ones is his hatred for the word 'Irregardless'.   I have seen him blow up when someone uses this word in a normal conversation.  His irritation has even gone to the point of losing business deals because he felt the need to correct the other person.

There comes a point that even if you are right,  you do not have to push that onto someone else.  As a seller the idea is that the customer is always right.  This applies even if you know they are completely wrong.   It's their gold and how they want to spend it is none of your business.   You may hold your ground with your idea of being right,  but taking money out of your pocket because of your wanting to prove to be correct is not the Gold Goblin way.

Keep in mind how you want to be treated when you are misguided.  Do you want someone to pound you into the sand telling you how you're a fool and don't know how to play your class?    They might not know the entire situation.   You may be buying for someone else or another alternate toon of yours.   The same way that you want to be treated is how you should enter a business negotiation with someone else.   Even if they misspell every other word and barely know the English language,  their gold still adds up the same as it's traded to your account.

Do not let your quest for a verbal superiority because you to be the poor man over in the corner.  Technically correct but still having no gold in the bank.

Good Luck and Happy New Year

Five Star Sales

Mommar Here

As we come closer to the new year.   The magic list of changes that we all want to do will start to come together.   Resolutions that slip into wishes that quickly slip into the past as the new year starts to roll along.

But in the next couple of days,  a wise Gold Goblin will look at their sales through the year and give themselves a rating.   Whether it's thumbs up,  toes up,  movie reels or whatever you choose as your method of showing approval.   Which sales were you especially proud of?   Which sales failed miserably and took gold from your pocket?

Learning from your sales opportunities in the past can lead to good sales in the future.   Taking those four and five star sales and seeing where they can even be improved.   Dissecting those one star sales and see just how they can be improved.

There is a well known adage that sales those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.    The same is applicable for your daily,  weekly and your 'home run' sales.   Taking a look at how your sales progressed can lead to the path of even better opportunities in the next year.

What sales are you especially proud of?   What sales are you hiding under the rug and denying they ever happened?

Good Luck and Good Hunting

The Gauntlet Thrown Down

So a friend of the journal threw a challenge my direction that got my egg-nog addled brain thinking.

Their basic statement was how to make gold.   This would seem like an easy question since it's the entire basis of this blog.   But a few caveats were thrown into the soup for spice.

-  No farming
-  Limited Auction House Work (i.e.  none)
-  No Crafting

Okay,  so this wasn't as easy as I had hoped.   But once the Gold Goblin brains at JMTC started rolling a couple of out of the box thoughts came to mind.

1.   PVP = Honor points to Justice Points

Yes,   there is still PVP though on many servers it seems to have lost some of it's luster.   Running PVP maps for Honor Points, then converting them to Justice points at your home city vendors is still available. In that same area are Cataclysm materials that can be purchased from vendors.   Not a ton of gold,  but it follows the pattern and the rules set down to make gold.

2..  Escort Service

Okay,   Now that I have your attention.   This escort service isn't about scantily clad men and women.  It is built around getting players to where they want to go.   Mages have a distinct advantage in this realm with their built in portal techniques.   During holidays many players still don't have flying mounts and want to be taken to different sections to obtain items (Think Hallow's Even event).   Nothing wrong with charging a few gold for your time and effort

3.  Contests and trivia games

On many servers there are still games of chance and games of trivia that people will play in trade chat.   It is a little more chancy since Blizzard has cracked down on just what game can be played.  And the first time that something goes wrong your reputation will be gone for a few extra gold.

4.  Dancing on the Mailbox

Yes Virginia,  there is still dancing in Orgrimmar.   Next time you see someone shaking what the Blizzard programmers gave them,  throw a few copper their direction.   It might just be an enterprising Gold Goblin looking for a good time.  (wow,  this is just getting dirtier and dirtier as we go).

5.   Begging

This once speaks for itself.   Not the most popular of professions.  But there is almost always one or two people on the server that will beg for gold in the main cities.   A sign saying 'will raid for food' always brings in the gold.

Some of these were tongue in cheek,  others were an attempt to get you to think outside the box.   The key is that there are many ways to obtain gold in Warcraft.  Some are more successful than others.   Keeping your mind fresh and looking at new ways might bring a little laugh,  and some extra coin into your pocket.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Post Holiday Toys

Mommar Here.

Hopefully your post holiday hangover is subsiding.   And your holiday food coma has allowed you to make your way back into Azeroth to grab your presents.

One of the biggest gifts this year was tablets.  Both Apple and Android models were on the top of many gamers lists.   Some of the more powerful tablets can even play wow with a combination of software and connections (if you want more information do a good search for 'Playing wow on a tablet'.

But one item that many players will overlook is the Mobile Armory app.   Available for both the Apple and Android operating system this gives you the opportunity to be looking for deals on the Warcraft Auction House while your watching TV or on the go.

A few things to keep in mind.  If you have a physical authenticator like I do,  you will need to have that with you to be able to purchase items using the Armory app.   This might be a good time to switch to the App version of the authenticator  (a detailed step by step is available on the Battle.net FAQ).

The Battle net app is one of many tools that can be added to your toolbox to add profit into your column.  And help you make it through the post holiday blues as we look to ring in a new year.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Follow Your Strength

Mommar here.

One of the misnomers of being a Gold Goblin is that you have to be great at every facet of making gold.  Somehow the belief has creeped in that you must be top in knowing what to craft,  high on flipping for profit. A master at farming materials to make gold and also jump on every sale that occurs.

Practically speaking this just isn't possible.  You can be good at multiple disciplines when it comes to making gold in Warcraft.  But to expect to be the best at everything will drive you completely insane.   As you continue on in your gold making career,  you will develop your strengths.   Those areas that you excel in due to server condition,  time management and even enjoyment of an aspect of making gold.   These strengths should be the base of your operations and your go to skill when it comes to making gold in the Warcraft environment.

Each discipline comes with its own hills and valleys.  But that base you create for your gold making empire will always be there.  Once that base of operation is successful you can branch out to become proficient and even great in different areas.    Creation of your gold making pyramid will allow your gold making dreams to become reality.

As you enter this weekend sales cycle,  build on your strengths.   The other aspects will follow suit and give you extra time to become proficient in other areas of the gold making experience.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

The Go To Gold Goblin???

Mommar here.

Every so often I get myself into trouble when it comes to my guild.   No,  I don't run out yelling Mommar jenkins at the start of a raid (I've done it once.   5 minutes of laughter followed as we wiped horribly).

What does occur is the fact that as a guild we share a lot of ideas on gold making.  I was not the first in my guild to make a considered effort to make a cubic butt-ton of gold.   There were those that had decent profits even at the beginning of Vanilla Warcraft.    The entire guild has a good amount of Gold Goblins sitting around playing the game as well as cashing in on their crafting and financial savvy.

What can get me into trouble is that a few of my guild mates know i write a blog on Warcraft gold making.  In their helpful ways they will suggest from time to time ideas on what I should write about.   Many times they are article ideas that are in the planning stages or being researched (yes,  I actually do a little research from time to time).   Other times they are little jabs at what I'm writing about.   Taking these jabs in stride and denying the requests for loans from guild mates does make Warcraft life a little bit more exciting.

So the question is have you presented yourself as being the go to goblin for your guild?   It's easy to drop a few bucks in guild mates hands to buy something they want.    But showing them some of your ideas you have learned.   Getting them into the gravy train you have built for your own crafting and flipping ideas can endear yourself to them faster than just handing over the goods and saying here you go.

There is a saying that take a man to fish and they will eat for a day,  but teach them to fish and they will eat for the rest of their life.  And in today's Warcraft economy,   a player without the means or methods to make their own gold is at a distinct disadvantage to the other players on a server.
