It is Tuesday and by the time you read this hopefully the servers will be open.   But let us first jump into the way back machine a couple of months ago and get some comments on the farming just after Mists of Pandaria opened.


......  So many materials,   so little time

----- I can't make gold,   too easy to get Ghost Iron Ore

Mists of Pandaria from the start made crafting materials very accessible.   This time around there was not a shortage of skins or ore to craft with.   It drove down the prices of stacks of crafting material,   which drove down prices on many of the items that were going to be gold making winners.

Now,  let's fast forward to post patch 5.1.   With the patch release,  spawn rate for Ghost Iron Ore and herb nodes were reduced.

Now before we all start panicking and running out.  This is good news for Gold Goblins.   Where farming gold may become a little bit more work to obtain,  the commodities themselves should start driving up in price.  Nodes for mining and Herbalism are still there,   There just will be a lower amount on the Auction House as players will have to take longer to collect.   It will raise crafting prices on items,  but also should raise selling prices on items.   

Your best bet is to keep a close eye on materials as they arrive to the Auction House and look for the best buy.   Also keep your cartel farmers happy with little trinkets and help when you can.  Having a good solid base of farmers will help you keep your costs down as you continue to produce gold making opportunities.

Also keep an eye on automatic posting from addons.   Don't be afraid to buy an underpriced item that you know will sell and relist it at a higher price.   With the new upgrade system with 5.1 and excess points that players have,  they are more apt to upgrade weapons as they proceed through the quest lines and dailies.

Keep your head up high,   gold is just around the corner.

Explaining Mists of Pandaria In 5 Words

This weekend a friend of mine talked to me about how I thought Mists of Pandaria was turning out.  He had decided to take a little bit of time off for his family and friends.   Another friend gave him a 60 day card as a gift for some work he did,  so he asked what he was getting into.

I started to give him the unvarnished truth about how I felt about the expansion.   Including what I share here and all the other parts that I both enjoy and do not enjoy when it comes to the expansion.   He is familiar with parts of my history when it comes to the game as well.

Later after I finished my schtick on the pros and cons of MOP I wondered if I had been a good ambassador to the game.   It is still a game that draws me to play,  but it is far from the addiction that it had been earlier in my life.  Still drawn to gold making and to enjoying quests,  but partially retired from raiding.  All of these things wrapped into how I felt about the expansion.

Then I proceeded to believe that what were the main parts of an explanation of warcraft.  And just how far could that description be filtered down too.   Could it be lowered to just a few words


1:   Mythos

I believe that the mythos created with Mists of Pandaria is some of the best storytelling that Blizzard has come up with.   Not just the straight forward quest text.  But the Lorewalker mythos,  the factions tied together into a overall war between different belief systems.   The last time that Blizzard told an overall story like this was during the Burning Crusade expansion.

2.   Pokemon

There is no escaping the idea that one of the mini games is Pokemon.   This is one of those breaking points with a lot of players.   There are no requirements to be a pet trainer,  and it has absolutely no effect on raiding.  But for many players,  just the thought of having it anywhere close to the game they love is an affront to their gaming beliefs.

3.  Dailies

After reaching level 90,  Dailies become one of the big parts of many players lives.   Whether they are raiders,  or questers or like to sit around a home city and make bad Chuck Norris Jokes.   Dailies to advance in gear and in reputation are a major part of logging on every day.   With previous expansions there were multiple options to obtain reputation.   Token purchases,  dailies,  running heroic dungeons and even questing could raise most reputations to exalted.  With MOP,  you will do your dailies and you will like it.

4.  Scenerios

These were the masterstroke for Blizzard to work with both the casual player as well as the hardcore player.   Having a setup where all you need is to queue and wait for three players,  no tank or healer required has made queue times much quicker.   It gives a taste of structured dungeons without the need to beholden to a healer and tank to queue.

5.   Repetition

This is the bane of any game,  whether it's monopoly or the most advanced MMO on the market.  Once the shiny parts wear off of a game,  then you have the base parts that get replayed time and time again.   With 5.1 just on the horizon,  new areas will be open to combat the repetition that can plague any players gaming life.   Repetition can result in boredom,  boredom can result in players looking to other places for entertainment.

There are more words that players will use when describing Mists of Pandaria to themselves.  Some would use Savior,  others might use cursed.   Either way,  the way that we frame words to describe what draws us back into wow,  can do the same for others.  Or drive them away to do something else.

Pattern Farming With Your Jewelcrafter

Every expansion has brought a different method of obtaining Jewelcrafting patterns for meta-gem cuts.  The last two expansions had players performing daily chores for tokens to purchase their patterns.

Mists of Pandaria revamped the system,  making a daily research project to obtain the rare blue cut patterns and a basic drop system for the meta diamonds.   This followed Blizzards goal of having to take a toon out for a spin in Pandaria instead of keeping them at their hometown to craft items.

The Primal Diamond is the crafting material that is used for the meta cuts.created from alchemist.   With the materials required to craft this already starts off being expensive (avg on many servers between 750-1000g in raw form).   With the patterns being drops,  the selling price for meta diamond cuts tend to be on the pricey side for now.   As the expansion matures this will probably change but primal diamond are still a good investment tool for Jewelcrafters.

With my personal cartel my Jewelcrafter is not my main.   Generally on the short list of leveling she ends up being about 3rd or 4th.   Some of my profession toons require to be leveled to get access to higher level patterns.  Tailoring and Leather working fall into this pattern to obtain epic sales and patterns.  

Jewelcrafting receives the benefit of the drop system and this can be taken advantage of.  There are many farming spots in Jade Forest that can be taken advantage of.  If your not wanting to level your Jewelcrafter currently but wanting access to this profitable patterns,  an hour of farming on both humanoid and mobs can net a couple of these patterns.  As always your mileage might vary when it comes to drops.

This isn't always the most optimum of ways of using a combination of obtaining patterns and leveling.  Many of the quests as you level through Jade Forest and beyond involve killing mobs.   Each of those kills that are looting present an opportunity for a new pattern.   So where the opportunity of semi mindless farming on mobs might appear easier,  it ends up slowing up the opportunity to both level and obtain patterns.

There is no real calculation of just what the drop rate is since it is a Jewelcrafting only loot item.  but 244-344 per drop isn't that far out of the ballpark using the numbers from Wowhead.   This is a lot of mobs to kill in repetition in one spot,  waiting for repops of the mobs.   A better tactic would be to continue to level through the content and do the occasional farming of humanoids and beasts when possible.   Instead of killing just 10 in a certain area,  killing 15 will add more chances for a Primal Diamond cut drop.

Selective opportunity farming combined with leveling will give you just the same amount of access to the patterns as well as put you in a higher leveling plateau.  Planning your time and methods will add more chances to obtain the patterns your looking for.

One thing with this combination of farming and leveling is to avoid instance queues.   Where the leveling becomes faster through instances,  the quick farming opportunities are not as plentiful.  Also your taking the chance that there is another Jewelcrafter in your group,  cutting your chances of obtaining that pattern in half. A one on one situation with rolling against the random loot generator for each kill puts you in a better spot if you are pattern hunting.

Keep this in mind when it is time to break out your Jewelcrafter.   Time is money and setting your time tables wisely will give you more opportunities for gold making.  Gold opportunities always make Goblins smile.

I am very partial to the beauty and mythos of any expansion pack.  Whenever I level my main through an expansion I tend to actually read all of the quest text.  I will take time to watch all of the NPC speeches and cut scenes.   It makes me level a little bit slower but I get the full enjoyment of the expansion.  

With Mists of Pandaria the Lorewalkers faction was introduced.    If you take a quick look at their quartermaster as many tend to do to see what loot they can acquire, they really do not seem to have much.  A couple of useful trinkets for that bane of all existence Archaeology,  and a nice shiny mount called the Disc of the Flying Red Cloud.

Nothing to get all that excited about unless you like interesting lore,  and shiny new mounts.   There are multiple easy ways to obtain exalted with the Lorewalkers.   Multiple add-ons and guides on how to make it very quick and painless (between one and two hours depending on your travel speed and accuracy).   The main point is to complete stories from different parts of the main areas on Pandaria.  Some of the items are only found in the level 90 Valley of the Eternal Blossoms.  The Vale can be opened at level 87 but will not have any active quests until Level 90.   Some players reported being able to enter this area earlier via bouncing around the mountains as well.

After you get all of the items (many of them are around packs of mobs so you will have to run in and then run out quickly with your tail tucked between your legs),  you end up with items in your mail to turn into Loremaster quest giver .   Each turn adds a ton of reputation to your Loremaster credits and after turning all of them in,  you have Exalted and access to the Flying Disc.

As I was leveling my first toon I started picking up some of the different lore items as I was in areas.  If I saw one I would pick it up and read it and then move on.  You can always wait til level 90 with flying to make things much easier on yourself.

After reaching level 90 I added an add-on to my pack called Handynotes.  Along with handynotes is a companion add-on called Handynotes Lorewalkers which added site markers to where all of the items are found on the mini-map.   You can always use one of the multiple maps that are online to find the points manually (the gang at Wowinsider have an excellent guide).  I also used this questline to finish up my Pandarian Explorer achievement.

Either way not every quest is about loot or gold.  Sometimes it's just fun to run around and sniff the roses,  pet the trees and look under rocks and see what stories are there.  There is always room for making gold tomorrow.

No,  I did not name my flying cloud disc Nimbus.  His name is Cadillac because Gold Goblins always ride the best.

To Level 90.. And Beyond!!!!!!

Many players will end up hitting 90 without finishing all of the quests offered in Mists of Pandaria.   After hitting 90,  getting geared up for raiding and scenerios.  Dailies start to unlock and the joys of World of Farmcraft begin.

But then whats stopping someone from continuing and finishing all the quests?  There are a couple of very good reasons that you should look to finish everything up in the Pandarian continent.


1.   The Lore

Some of the best lore happens in the Dread Waste.   You learn exactly why you should be helping the Klaxxi in the future.   Plus the developers worked very hard on writing an excellent script.   Stop and smell the roses,  or plants or whatever that bush is that they want me to pick next.

2.   You like Gold Right?

As with all the previous expansions,   your gold from quest turn ins are doubled once you hit level 90.   And who doesn't like to get 20-30g per turnin.   Plus with the chances for Bind on Equip drops and item turn ins for vendoring/disenchanting it's free gold.

3.   Spirits of Harmony

For Mastercraft items you will need to farm Spirits of Harmony.  There are many areas in both the Dread Waste and Vale of Eternal Blossom hold excellent sources of farming areas.   Mass amount of beasts and humanoids that spawn one on top of the other.   Each kill will add both to your gold and also your chances of having enough Spirits of Harmony to craft any recipe you want.

4.   Access to higher level equipment.

There is a heavy cost of crafting epic items in Mists of Pandaria.   Blood Spirit is a costly materials to collect for ilvl 496 items.  With the changes for looking for raids disenchanting (no longer will LFR items DE into Blood Spirit it will be even longer before these become common.   The Klaxxi in Dread Waste give access to ilvl 489 level items at Revered which will set you very well into Raid categories.   Finishing the quests in Dread Waste will get you to Honored and unlock another set of Dailies.

5.   Elite rares around this area.

Mists of Pandaria opened up a different type of Elites.  Instead of just being bigger and badder than other mobs,  they gave each of them different abilities.   The Elites in both Dread Wastes and Vale of Eternal Blossoms have some of the most elaborate elites.   They also drop some of the most interesting loot including cooking feasts and rare supplies.

Instead of being bored in your home city,  look to finish up the quests in all the areas of Mists of Pandaria.  Come for the lore,  enjoy the gold and the sites.  And if you see me out there,  wave me in for a good elite kill.  I will bring the beer (root beer of course).

There are many things that go into the needs for a farmer.   From having the time and the areas that are good to farm,  having the right equipment can give you an advantage over others.

One of these is from the engineering school of professions,  the Mist Piercing Goggles.   These goggles can sit in your inventory and increase your ability to find nodes for both mining and herbs.  For engineers this is a nice money maker since the item is BOE and can have the bottleneck cost of the two Spirits of Harmony required to craft.

Blizzard changed the way that farmers had to equip themselves.  Giving bonuses to the tools needed instead of making them required tools.    Mining Pick and Skinning Knives are still valuable with their +10 bonuses to the skill levels.   These bonuses allow players to get to higher level herbs and mining nodes faster.

With Mists of Pandaria flying not available til 90,  taking advantage of the territory covered with land mounts become that much more important.   Seeing nodes and digging spots for mining and herbalism becomes just as important as getting there quickly.   Where many of the quests in the opening portion of Pandaria quest lines occur around rivers and mountain areas,  the more nodes that become available for picking and mining the better profit margins will become.

As Mists of Pandaria continues,  and high level crafting begins to kick into high gear.   Materials will become more in demand and farmers can lead the way to easy gold.   Just make sure that the items in your bag present you in the best situation to ride the crest of goblin gold making.

Its that time again.    Hallow's end is here for all the trick or treaters.   Hallow's end is my 2nd most favorite holiday of the Warcraft year (you just can't beat Brewfest for the beer).

Not much has changed this year.   The weapons and gear are of ilvl 470 quality and the minimum level requirement is 89 to get into the headless horseman fight.   As always this is a good chance to get some raid quality gear for a few minutes of work.

Also added this year is the Pandaria trick or treat baskets.  Trick or treating has arrived in Pandaria.   The geniuses at Ice-veins.com have written up a good guide for all the events during Hallow's End.

One thing to keep in mind with the Pandarian buckets is that if you haven't done the quest hubs in that area the bucket might be phased out.  This will obviously be a problem for lower levels that are looking for chances to gain quick xp.  

As always wand charges will be popular,  though ever year since their introduction there have become more and more scarce opportunities for sales.   This might be your year to give back to the gang and give some free wand shots.  Yes,  I know.  sacrilegious to many gold goblins but still it's only a few gold.   For those starting out their gold goblin questing this is the best opportunity to obtain gold between wand shots and running out for trick or treat gold.

There are two pets that are available during the holiday

Feline Familiar
Sinister Squashling

Both are tradeable so look for many of these to be on the Auction House.   Saving two or three in your bank for later in the year can rake in some extra profit.  Even if you have learned the maximum three of the pet you can set aside the rest to relearn once you have caged and sold one from your collection.

Both are sold for 150 Tricky Treats by toy vendors in the major cities.   If you run your toons through all of the different trick or treat buckets you will end up with around 300+ treats.   This should allow you to buy 1 of each of the pets for your collection or for resell.  Just keep in mind that everyone will be doing this so the market will be fierce during the event.  This might be an excellent opportunity to take the pet and train them to a higher level for more value.

Where many times we talk about the monetary quests and opportunities but this is one of the most fun events that Warcraft has on it's agenda.   So run out with your favorite mask and go boo to someone.  It's a holiday,  I will bring the smores.

Make Two To Sell One

Lets face facts gang,   where there is still money to be made from farming,  it is dwindling to a low profit margin based against time.   With farmers undercutting each other down to the bare bone minimum it has become a buyers/crafters market.

On the flip side,  crafters are having to look more at investments instead of just looking at baseline money making opportunities.  There is not easy Elementium Shuffle with Mists of Pandaria to print your own money.   It takes more and more creativity to be able to build a baseline business

Some kind person decided to do a drastic undercut on the Ghost Iron Ore market.   I will give this person the benefit of the doubt that they weren't trying to collapse the Ghost Iron Ore market but had made a miscalculation on sales price.  

After buying all the ore I had a decision to make.  I could zip it over to my Jewelcrafter for some quick prospecting and post some new gems.   Smelt the bars and make a quick profit.  Or send them over to my Alchemist and transmute some Trillium Bars.   All three would net me a profit one way or the other.  

I decided to send the majority of the bars to be smelted and then transfer over to my Alchemist for transmute duty.  Keeping a rough track of how much I invested in the ore,  I knew what my selling point to reach a reasonable profit margin would be.   Saving some for my later Living Steel transmute timer I dropped them on the AH for sale.   They ended up selling after an hour at a decent profit.

So what is the big deal about this?    Why are you telling this story Uncle Mommar?   Because right now with the way Mists of Pandaria is set up,   the basics of investment and sales become that much more important.   There is no "easy" way to make gold other than questing and farming.   Granted it's not rocket science to make gold in Warcraft,  but there is not blueprint that truly will give you 100%

Your fundamental basics combined with learned traits will take you a long way in making gold during Mists of Pandaria.   Whether it's flipping items,  crafting for others or running around killing the bad guys for riches and fun.   Just keep in mind that if you make one,  then someone will want to buy the other one you can make.

Many players are knee deep in their first or second character that they are leveling to 90.   Wading through the quests,  and cut scenes and overall enjoyment of Mists of Pandaria.

But what about those lonely alts that are sitting in their home cities doing nothing but holding items until they are called on.  Until they are needed for their crafting ability or just for entertainment.

One thing to consider is to take some time and add them to the mix of your daily 'chores'.   During holidays such as Brewfest there are many quests that can be knocked out in a small amount of time.   Finishing all the quests for Brewfest takes about 30 minutes the first day,  and around 10 minutes the rest of the holiday.   If you add up both of the daily quests during Brewfest you end up with around 100,000 xp per day at 85.   Also included in this during Brewfest is the access to the Brewfest tokens to purchase the two pets (Pint-Sized Pink Pachyderm and Wolpertinger's Tankard) for resell on the battle pet market.

Brewfest isn't the only holiday to offer quests with little time involved to finish.   Almost all of the holidays have simple to finish quests that offer rewards regardless of level.   Having more XP when you later on start your questing in Mists of Pandaria allows you to arrive to your maximum level that much faster.   All for a little investment of time.

Profession dailies also add to your profession point total with just that investment time.   Whether it's fishing or cooking,  having your second or third string characters starting to level their professions before hitting the turf of Pandaria can be very beneficial.

Taking a look at your daily quest opportunities can add not just a little bit of variance to your chore list, but also set you in a higher plateau once your ready to start leveling the backup dancers on your character list.

First Day In Pandaland

My first day at sitting to play Mists of Pandaria was definitely interesting.  

I started the day early by looking for cheap flips of Ghost Iron Ore and Bars that netted me a few hundred gold.   Surprisingly the ore wasn't as expensive as I had expected.   Remembering that during
the start of the Cataclysm expansion Ore got up to 400g a stack.  

After that I let my Jewelcrafter get started.   I had wanted to get her up and going as early as possible to help generate a good base-line profit.  Gems were already starting to kick into high gear with a lot more of the Perfect cuts being available on a much more regular basis.  After Prospecting about 20 stacks I leveled my Jewelcrafting profession,   posted up to sell the items and then moved on to my next stop.

My next profession was going to be Inscription.   Having already heard bad things already about inscription being depressed again I wasn't looking forward to this.  I trained and picked up some inexpensive Mists of Pandaria herbs on the auction house.   After crafting a few of the new mid level shoulder enchants and one Spirit of Harmony (it is on a midnight timer) I ended up learning a new glyph.   Glyph of Incite ends up being a mid level Warrior glyph but it was obvious that the glyph learning system was not bugged.   After posting up my crafts I moved to my third profession target.

My third target profession was going to be my Blacksmith.   I was concerned this one might hurt because of the expected target costs.  Normally if ore costs x then I'd expected to pay x times 2 or
higher for bars.  Having a miner I was all ready to shoot some ore down to her and have her make bars.  Low and behold Ghost Iron Bars were running at half the cost of the Ore itself.  I jumped on this deal and started to level my Blacksmith.   This is when I found out that the Anvil in Dalaran was bugged (in fact all of them are bugged).  You could learn most of the professions in Dalaran (Engineering wasn't available) but with the Anvil not working I had to port all the way to Orgrimmar.

So after getting 55 points from crafting on my Blacksmith I ended up posting up those items for sale (no one had posted any so I shot the moon when it came to pricing).    That's when I decided to start working on battle pet leveling.

After training just Northeast of the flying area (in Orgrimmar) I went out for my first pet conquest.  I figured just outside of Orgrimmar was the best bet.  Whoops,  that was a bad mistake.  I think I ran into the rabbit from Monte Python.   The Rabbit whopped up on my companion Willy a couple of times til I realized I needed to rethink this strategy.

After taking him into Ogrimmar and beating on some Dung Beetles til he had leveled,  I unlocked all three of my pet battle slots and did about 20 to 25 minutes of pet battles.    Earlier I had seen many pets that had been listed (common ones were going for very inexpensive.).  All of these pets were level One pets.   I was going to test a theory to see just how much someone would want to pay for a pet that was Level 5.  

After running around and collecting a few new pets (Spiny Lizard,  Dung Beetle and Rabbit) I decided it was time to get busy leveling.   I had debated furiously on who would be the first to go.  Deciding just today that it would be my Enchanter,  I started the beginning quest to get over to Pandaria.  One note,   The cataclysm expansion started with a boat ride to go to the water area.  When you're looking for the boat to go to Pandaria,  it's a blimp.  For some reason much to my chagrin it took me 5 minutes to figure this out and find it in the area.  Not my most shining moment (Yes Mommar does sometimes forget to read the quest text).

After going through the first 2 boat quests and then shimmying down the rope I looked at where I was at.   There were mobs everywhere.   Where there are mobs there are farming opportunities.   When you first start you are right in the middle of Allied soldiers.  I spent about 30 minutes farming on these mobs for cloth.  Walked out with about a stack and a half of Windwool Cloth.   The disappointing part was that other than the first quest that scored me a very nice new Staff.  The other quests were only for XP and gold.   One of the major reasons I wanted to get my enchanter going first was to DE the starter equipment for materials.  This surprised me since every other expansion had outfitted you with the new gear within the first 15 quests.  

I ended up my questing day on one of the town outskirts ready to pick up where I left off.   This area is full of minerals and mobs to be able to farm cloth and herbs and ore.  I could now see why the prices had not skyrocketed yet.   This weekend will change that as more casual players will end up logging on to play.

With my next session I will bring in my second wave of levelers to get started.  Including my Miner/Skinner to get my Leatherworker working as well.   With how Jewelcrafting is being set up the Jewelcrafting shuffle looks to be different than before.  It's highly possible that Disenchanting will occur from the Blacksmith and Leatherworking professions similar to what has occurred before with the neck pieces and rings of Jewelcrafting during previous expansions.   Having a wait and see attitude will be beneficial.

Hopefully tomorrow will be productive and some of the secrets of Pandaria will be unlocked.

The patch day is among us.  Only hours til the doors open (on US servers).    European servers are enjoying the joys of waiting for the world servers come back on.

The rush to be the first for all the professions on the US server is going to create unparallelled competition and bidding for Mists of Pandaria materials.   Everything in the auction house will go for seemingly outrageous prices in the first two weeks if not longer.   

If you have been reading the gospel of goblin according to JMTC you know that chapter 1 verse 1 is

very simple.

Timing, Timing and Timing.

There will be a rush to place items on the auction house to ride the wave of sales that always occur with a new expansion.   The first minerals going for hundreds of gold a stack.   Much of this occurs because there are more gold making experienced players than ever before.  With much more money to

spend than in previous expansions.

The 2nd verse of the gospel of goblin goes:

The first auction shall be the last auction

Most of the items that are listed in the first hours of the expansion on the auction house will be undercut just as quickly.   Active items such as cloth and ore will continually be listed lower and lower

with each passing minute.   The majority of players won't be logging onto their new expansions til later in the day (that sleep they seem to crave).   Gathering Mists of Pandaria items now and waiting til the majority of buyers are on the server can net less returns to your email and more gold into your pocket.

The 3rd verse in the Gospel of Goblin:

Communicate,  Communicate and Communicate.

Many of the gold goblin writers have twitter and Facebook accounts.   Adding them to your twitter list can get you on the mark from the start to new changes.   Reading your server trade chat,  your guild chat and even your cartel can let you jump on deals before they are snatched away.  My Twitter account is @JMTCMommar,

Goblins wept (because they didn't update their add-ons).

The biggest mistake players do is not updating their add-ons.   Especially their crafting and searching add-ons.   Many add-ons have been in beta and kept updating through the beta for MOP.   Trade Skill Master,  Skillet and other crafting add-ons have been updated and tested for Mists of Pandaria.   Having a server client such as from Curse.com can have you updated in no time.

Have Fun.. Be Patient.  Gold Will Be There.

The next few hours are the jump start to an expansion that is going to last us a minimum of a year and a half.   That is a lot of time to make gold.  This gold boon is a bump in a long road of gold making opportunities.   So if you don't hit the million gold mark the first day,  there is always tomorrow.  Each gold goblin millionaire started off the same as everyone else.   

So it's time to take the message of the Gospel of Goblin to the heathen pandas.   Let's go and convert the poor into the rich.   The weak into the mighty,  and the bored into the entertained.   Its panda time
