You Never Know

Mommar Here

I have actively kept my 'real life' away from this blog.   The biggest of reasons is that it would generally bore you to tears.  Knowing the intimate details of my life will not enhance your gaming experience or end up putting gold into your pocket.

But this week a few things happened that I felt the need to share.  One Thursday I was at my Lawyers office giving a deposition for a car accident I was involved in a few years ago.  During the questions I was asked what my hobbies were.  I listed off computers,  and watching movies and long walks in the park.   I also told the lawyer that my sign was Sagittarius and all of my dislikes.  Okay no it didn't end up being a centerfold interview but you get the idea.

One of the items that came up was writing here.  Now prepare to be shocked but not everyone knows what World of Warcraft is.  The opposing lawyer being a mature person probably had never played an MMO previous.  So for the next 5 minutes I answered questions about just playing WOW,  what I write here and general questions.  So somewhere in the annuals of history I get major geek cred for having said World of Warcraft in a legal proceeding.

The other event that occurred was on Friday.   My shammie was running a Oqueue setup on the first wing of Siege of Org.   The run went extra smooth with the raid leader knowing exactly how to set up and how to get everyone on the same page.  Having run many LFR's and even Flex runs that ended up with rage quits and hurt memories it was refreshing to get a clean run.  As we were finishing up with Sha and looting the raid leader was getting many virtual pats on the back and thanks for an awesome run.  He then proceeded to tell everyone thanks and nonchalantly tell people that he was the main guide writer for Icy-Veins.com.   No-one would have guessed that we have that high of a profile raid leader on this run.  It went down as one of my top 20 events in my career playing wow.

So the moral of the story boys and girls?  You never know just who that person is that your arguing with,  calling a noob and generally making a north end of a south bound donkey out of yourself.  People are people,  and you never know who that person is on the other side of the keyboard.

The Value of Material Assets

Any Gold Goblin worth their salt will tell you they like having assets.   With man speak this is translated to 'I like having stuff'.   The entire goal of our gold goblining (is that a word?) adventure is to make more gold than we really and truly need.

But lost in the translation many times is the advantage of not just having liquid assets but material assets as well.  I am a self professed packrat.  Rarely do I just toss something away.  Even venturing the limitless amount of food that is available from drops and quest rewards.  If it won't sell on the Auction House for a pretty penny it can sell to the goblin vendor I have to lug around on my might might yak of doom.

Material assets are also very valuable when it comes to bartering.    There are those times that no matter how much gold you have,  the item you want isn't available on the Auction House.   And no matter how much gold you throw out there,  the item isn't for sale.   This might seem strange because who would turn down a cubic ton of gold thrown at their feet.   But the value of anything is only worth what someone is willing to pay.

The key to bartering is to not just add items but also add services.  With a Blacksmith I can craft the entire PVP set for someone.  At some point gold becomes relatively meaningless.  But if I can trade for raw materials I can make more than the value that the item would be for just straight gold.  Ore and rarer herbs is especially useful for this idea.   2500g is a nice profit.  But give me 50 stacks of Ghost Iron Ore and I can make much more than 1000g in profit.

Also add to the idea that creative bartering can be enjoyable all by itself.  It's easy to craft,  place on the AH and then pick up your profits the next day.  At the beginning the numbers are exciting as they tick into your coffers.  But later making gold becomes a chore.  Bartering can sharpen your wits and your abilities to enjoy making gold once again.

So the next time you talk to a player about crafting an item,  quote them a price in materials instead of gold.  You will be surprised at just how valuable your materials can be.

Patch 5.3 on the Horizon

Your friendly neighborhood Mommar here.

So if you started your game this weekend,  like millions of players did.  You got to see the downloading screen once again starting to pick up background data for the new Patch 5.3.  Usually this means lots of speculation on when will it drop,  what should I do and at what point do I get to panic.

The quick answer is who knows,  the same thing you're doing now and only in view of a camera for your future youtube.com fame.   Mists of Pandaria developers have been pretty good at getting new content out quickly to balance between repetitiveness of previous expansion patches and not enough time to enjoy that new fresh smell that you get when new goodies arrive.

In this case it does bring to a question just what needs to change in your daily and weekly strategy as far as lower level gear.  The Isle of Thunder was very much a catch up hub on raiding gear.   The ease of obtaining reputation and higher level gear through crafting,  grinding out the reputation to reward and Looking For Raids that were put on a farm very quickly caused low level gear to not be as desired.   Sure players would pick up items to fill in spots in their ilvl gear.  But greens took a serious hit unless they had an extra special look to them,  or were cheap enough to Disenchant for materials.

This is a good time to start to dissect the PTR patch notes for investments and items that you expect to be in demand in the near future.   And to start to do a slow burn on holding materials for enchants and armor patches when they become in demand after Patch 5.3 drops.

Just keep up the good fight.   We're all in this together.

It's fun to say Arrrrrghh

Avast me hardies Captain Mommar is here.

It's only fitting that today is the unofficial holiday Talk Like A Pirate Day.  As Gold Goblins we can live a pirate life of grabbing gold,  and spending it on our own treasures and luxuries.  I would suggest never calling an Orc a 'wench' unless you want to meet the business end of a cutlass.

I was running through Maraudon with a group,   and was arriving to the last boss of the instance.   Princess Theradras used to be one of those bosses that I dreaded.   She was a tough battle with a nasty knock back attack.  Dying and having to make that long run back was something that I dreaded consistently.  This was when I was tanking for instances so I had a larger chance of dying without a good healer.

This time the group seemed to be mowing through mobs and mini bosses rather quickly.   Many of the players had BOA gear and gear that was overpowered for the instance.   Also being a DPS class this time around I was able to enjoy the run a little bit more.   So in the back of my mind I was remembering a song that I had seen a video for to this instance.

Now you can imagine as I'm trying to damage the targets this song is running on a continuous loop in my mind.   So a smile and laughter were peeling through the house.  Thankfully there was not Vent with the group or I would have some explaining to do.

As we are playing this game,  there are times that I wonder just how much fun people are having.  The idea of stopping and smelling the roses so to speak.   Veteran players have been through these instances four or five times as they have leveled.  Some have run these 100's of times looking for one item or another.   Performing the same task over and over can become tedious and we forget that this is a game.  It's meant for our enjoyment.   Anything less and there are other things to spend that 15 dollars a month on.

So today,  make sure to talk like a pirate somewhere.  Or talk like a wench if that is what you like to do.  But make sure to have some fun with this game.   That's what we're all here to do.

Good Luck and Good Fishing
