Have You Hugged Your Yak Today?

Mommar here.

Let's face facts.  Having a large pile of gold is a good thing in a game such as World of Warcraft.  It opens up a lot of options for toons.   Gearing a toon quickly to raid level just requires a quick visit to the Auction House and perhaps a few visits to players with select professions.  Want a pet?   Buy it from the AH.  See something you want from someone,  drop a few pieces of gold and it is yours.  When it comes to gold,  if you have you you like it,  when you don't you want it.

Mists of Pandaria brought into the game one of the best mounts when it comes to usefulness.  The Grand Expedition Yak was introduced and quickly sought after by gold goblins everywhere.  The ability to not just buy basic provisions and sell your gray items would have been awesome just by itself.  Being able to drag along a Reforger for all of your gear changing needs was icing on the cake.   The 120,000 price tag without any time of discount was definitely a kick in the gold teeth.  But once you had it the usefulness was apparent.

With Warlords of Draenor and saying goodbye to the Reforging utility the Yak loses a little bit of its shine.   It hasn't been revealed just what will happen with this multi player useful mount.  But as my mind was rattling along I came up with some possible suggestions to the powers that be:

1.  Portable Forge/Anvil Carrier

This guy only has one purpose in life.  Lug a 200 lb Anvil that on request drops a combination forge/Anvil for all your Blacksmithing needs.  Basically this would be a free version of the Thermal Anvil.

2.  Portal Carrier

Ever wanted your own pocket mage?   One that can make a portal to certain cities and zones?   Even if the portals were on an extended cooldown just being able to occasionally zip from one area to another would be very useful.  Being able to create one that party members could use would be even more valuable.

3.  Mirror to your Garrison

This would be much trickier to pull off.  One of the things with Garrisons that we know of is that you will be able to level up your minions/followers to cover professions that you do not have on your characters.  Unless they have a high level access point the odds are that you will have to return to your garrison to have access to these professions.  What if your friendly neighborhood yak could give you access to them?   Set up a vendor that allows you to set your professions on their missions, collect the gear and even have them craft something for you on the fly.

There are many options that can be done with the traveling yak circus to replace the usefulness of the Reforging ability.  Hopefully Blizzard will reward the players who sank the money into this awesome mount and encourage players to return to the plains of Pandaria for their own thundering yak of usefulness.

Leave Your 'Tude At The Door

Mommar here.

If you want to refer to my 'career' with World of Warcraft, I should be thankful to many of the people I have met in and out of the game itself.  There are people even to this day that I consider close friends,  others that I have had the honor of meeting even if it was for a fleeting moment.

But then some weeks tend to be more difficult than others.  To the point that you start to wonder whether the reputation,  gold and experience is truly worth it.   As I have said before, I am running some of the older Mists of Pandaria raids for gold and reputation.   There is this mental itch I have that when I see a non exalted reputation I must finish it off.   In this case I do all of the Throne of Thunder raids i can get during the week.  These raids include the dreaded LFR that everyone finds so tasty on the brain.

Most of the time these go off without a hitch.   Poke Durumu in the eye with a big pointy stick,  ride Tortos like a bronco even get a little shock to the system with Lei Shen.

But this week seemed to be a cavalcade of grumpy players.  Players looking to pick fights for the smallest problem.   Then a full blown meltdown if there was a wipe.  Remember this content was the new shiny raids not 6 months ago.  Most players are overgeared for the content, but there is still a certain amount of possibility of dying a horrid game death.   But no one really signs on to be the target of someone's abuse.

Having spent easily 10,000g on repairs over the years I have been playing, seeing a raid fail to a boss is a normal experience.   You just pick up,  look to see what can be fixed and move on.  If nothing can be solved, then it is time to leave the raid and go find something else to do.   But there are times I feel I am in the minority when it comes to this attitude.

Noob,  idiot,  *&*$ and other words that would get you punched out in the real world get slung around as normal conversation.  My raid can joke with me and tell me I'm weak sauce, but everyone has their limits.  Lately my patience to have to listen to people go off for silly reasons has become less and less.  Most of the time players will just direct it at the random player, but occasionally someone will shoot their mouth in my general direction.   One raid i ended up dying due to poor tanking/healing and was accused of taking 'too much damage'.  If I had failed in the mechanics I would have completely agreed with them.   The wise player knows they are never 100% perfect, but in this case every movement out of raid damage was done correctly. Seemed this player also didn't understand how an arms warrior works when well geared.   Hearing 'why is the warrior doing so much AOE damage' finally got me to respond.   After explaining in a slow, precise matter that an arms warrior has 3 different cleaves that automatically go off you will get AOE damage.  Along with this explanation was the fact that this player needed to be more worried about their low dps (under 100k) than putting the blame on everyone but their own shoulders.

Later this bothered me not because of the words I had used.  What bothered me was that I had let his rash silliness get to me and take away my enjoyment of the raid.  There will always be hotheads,  always be players that troll for attention.  There will always be players to be carried with a dps wheelbarrow.  Raid wipes will occur no matter the skill of a group.   But my attitude is what I choose it to be.  I can choose to react or I can choose to walk away.   Either choice is viable and functional.

The same goes for the good days and bad days of making gold.  Our attitudes attach themselves to whether we can be successful or not.  Making lots of gold is fun.  Making lots of gold in the game without losing all mental sanity is even better.  So enjoy the game with a good spirit and less stress.   And remember there is always the choice to turn off the game and take a breath.  It is a game and you make the choice of what attitude you bring.

Going Looney over the Lunar Festival

Mommar here

Over the months I have given a lot of grief to the powers that be that they need to update many of the best holidays in World of Warcraft.   Just adding a few holiday bosses would add a lot to the draw of these older holidays.

The Lunar Festival is not one on my list that needs to be updated.  There is already a world boss, Omen  Having been around in the old days of watching him wipe out entire raids quickly and seeing multiple people needing to run back to take another whack at him brings the way world bosses used to feel.  Not to just kill a boss because he dropped great loot, but simply because that is what you did with friends.

As I was flying around on one of my characters picking up the different Festival elders for the holiday and collecting Coins of Ancestry.  I still had all of the frilly dresses that you could purchase with the coins in my bank so my major interest in getting coins on all of my toons was for the Festival Lanterns.  When these first came out they were a hot commodity to transfer to an alliance toon/buddy and sell for obscene amounts of gold.  Now the transfer over to the opposite faction is much easier since pet books are linked across factions and across servers.

Setting aside the quest for gold (I know, blasphemy here) but this holiday is just beautiful to see and enjoy.  From dropping into a alliance controlled zone to pick up a coin to looking at the coordinates you downloaded from the guide to figure out the fastest way to get to the next zone.  Combining this with the occasional pick-up of pets that I didn't have it becomes a change of pace from just running Timeless Isle and Siege of Orgrimmar.

Where many people are stuck inside from the latest blitz of cold weather finding something that brings warmth and joy is important.  Escapism is the biggest draw for Warcraft and this holiday is the best place to escape from.

The Lunar Festival it hasn't changed that much so here is a link to the Icy-Veins guide for 2014 which they deserve all the credit for putting together.  Link

Take this weekend and stop and smell the Lunar Festival.  Not just for the profit, but just because this is one of the most enjoyable holidays of the Warcraft Calender.

Cleaning Out The Closet (Achievement Edition)

Mommar here.

On the server reset day I tend to be a busy little Azerothian beaver.  Pushing 5 toons through Ordos and Celestial runs can fill up a lot of time.  Add to this list wanting to finish up the epic quest line for my hunter, which ends up running TOT looking for raid runs when they pop up.  Also include my timeless isle farming, plus two favorite shows being on TV I tend to stay busy on Tuesdays.

Then things start to slow down into the normal questing grind and picking up spot flex raid runs during the week.  By Saturday night or Sunday I have started to need a palette cleanser of sorts.  I have said before that I tend to keep Sunday's open to running old instances and raids for fun and profit.

One of the things I wanted to pick up before Warlords of Draenor was a Hellreaver Polearm before the next expansion.  When this first dropped while leveling it was the coolest thing to lug around.   Being the time well before Transmogrification was available to players I had to Vendor it to clear out some bag space.  Now with a large amount of spaces to put things I finally picked up another one by soloing Hellfire Ramparts.  Then proceeding to work on my Raids that I wanted specific items from I went over to Northrend to run the Eye of Eternity.  Two Mounts, Reins of the Azure Drake and Reins of the Blue Drake drop from here.  As I was finishing up with smacking Malygos around the achievement You Don't Have An Eternity popped up as completed.  This was one of those achievements that I had forgotten about and had never completed during the Wrath of the Lich King expansion.

Popping up the Achievement browser I started eyeballing through all of the achievements that I had not completed.  Little bits and pieces started jumping out at me of items I could complete.   These didn't offer any gold or mounts or titles for myself.  Finishing them would purely be of the 'yay, I did that' variety of life.

As I was running around and flying in a different area I ended up getting tied into a Wintergrasp fight.  It had been a long time to be in Wintergrasp, but six of us got together and whooped some Alliance around the field of battle.  Then I decided to give a try to finish up the Earth, Wind and Fire (10 man) achievement.   This is the achievement that you have to kill all four bosses inside the instance within 60 seconds of each other.  After doing a quick lookup I gave it a try.  Failing miserably (don't worry true believers I killed them all but couldn't get them all together in a pack to smack them around inside the 60 seconds).

There are plenty of other achievements that are floating around the World of Warcraft for players to finish up.  Instance,  raid and even PVP achievements sitting there ripe for the picking and completing.  So the next time you get bored and sitting in your home city go run out somewhere and look up what achievements you can finish.  Not just for gold, but purely for the enjoyment of the game.

MOP Prep: Setting the Lineup

I grew up loving baseball.   Having been a lifelong Cubs fan (you can insert your pity here now) I have watched the same foibles played out time after time.

One thing that any monday morning manager will tell you,  the manager needs to change the lineup for success.  The guy that fumbled the night before needs to do down to AAA and be replaced by the up and coming player to be named later.

Warcraft is a little different in the idea that you are always in control of what sells and what is produced.  But your lineup is just as important as any baseball manager.    Which toons will you be leveling first?  What crafts will you be leveling first?  Should you double up on certain professions.

A gold goblin has to answer these questions.   With MOP almost upon us it's more important than anything to have your profession lineup starting to come together.

I will give you the lineup I'm using for my prepping for MOP.

(I've left out some of my players names because I might be the one that's undercutting you that day).

Druid X -   Alchemist/Herbalist  -  (has fast flight form)
MorphineDrip -  Jewelcrafter/Alchemist
ShamanX  - Jewelcrafter/Engineer
Mommar-   Blacksmith/Leatherworker
Moliono -  Inscriptionist/Herbalist
Mosiac -  Tailoring/Enchanter
CurdledMilk - Banking toon (parked in Thunder Bluff)
Moonpye -  Banking toon  (Parked in Tanaris)
Deathknightx  -  Engineer/jewelcrafter
Move  - Miner/Skinner

I decided that my leveling will be switched between my Hunter (Move) and my Blacksmith   Leatherworker (Mommar).  This is how I leveled when cataclysm first was introduced.  All my production items were sent to the appropriate craftsman to allow them to level quickly.  Remember that with Catalcysm it was needed to have at least one 83 to access some of the materials necessary to level the Inscription Profession.   It's possible the Blizzard producers will do the same for Mists of Pandaria.

Recently I did some changing to my lineup by dropping Mining from MorphineDrip and leveling another Jewelcrafter.   This is simply to double my ability to obtain Gem patterns and tokens faster.  Also I added MorphineDrip as an Alchemist to double my opportunity at daily transmutes.   Both of them will be transmute specialist.

In my lineup my workhorses are the Druid for the Herbalism and Move for the mining and skinning.  My lineup also has in it my two bank toons (one for the regular AH in Thunder bluff and the joint AH in tanaris.   This gives me access to both quickly for Arbitrage between the two factions.

These changes to my lineup ended up in investments of around 20k,   which may seem a lot but I will recoup my losses quickly by having the access to the double transmutes and the quicker jewelcrafting turn around.

So why did I choose to present this part of the plan first?   To build a goblin gold fortification you need your base.  And your placement of characters and professions are your base.

One thing,   this tip might seem to be placed towards those that have lots of gold to play with.  But it's just as important from the start of your gold empire to have your lineup planned out from the start.   You should play a toon that you will enjoy playing,  and professions that you can see will become valuable both to your personal usage as well as gold making skill.    Having one toon be the workhorse for your farming will add flexibility to your other toons and their ability to craft valuable items.  It's possible to make large amounts of gold without any type of farmer,  but it becomes more difficult if stocks begin to dwindle.

What other combinations would be useful to have for MOP?

Four words to rock your head (enchants)

One of those blue posts from the magical being known as Ghostcrawler has changed both reputation grinding,  and also a new source of income for inscriptionists.

Originally posted by Blizzard (Official Post | Blue Tracker)

Head enchants are gone.

We decided that putting head enchants on the various faction vendors wasn't working well with our design intent for the factions. There is a lot of max-level quest content in MoP, much of it focused around the reputation with the new factions. I think it's really cool stuff -- worlds away from the old Argent Crusade scourge stone days. :)

In previous expansions, the head enchants on the faction vendors served to force players into that content. You couldn't even choose which reputation to pursue -- you had to pursue the one with your specific head enchant. Our design intent for MoP is to give players options in how to play, and the head enchant design wasn't compatible with that.

Once we decided to no longer offer new head enchants, we made the older ones non-functional or else players would feel like they had to go back to older content or be missing out on power. This way, helmets are just no longer enchantable and you'll have one less required step to get a piece of loot ready to wear.

Shoulder enchants can now be provided by scribes, so those still exist, but they are also not part of the faction reputation system

The idea of inscriptionists receiving access to sales of shoulder enchants will add to many a gold goblins coffers.    If you were one of the crafters that got into inscriptions late into cataclysm you found out it was a cutthroat market.  Some were able to make thousands in gold,  while other eeked out a little money every day.  Now with the PVP items that they will be able to craft,  the shoulder enchants as well as other trinkets that seem to be headed to that profession:  crafters should be able to make a healthy amount of gold as they make their way through Panderia.

As I've said before in a few of my tips,   it is  going to be very important to have your crafters around the 510-515 level before Mists begins it's expansion.    Having your crafting/gathering professions at 525 will also be beneficial.   If you missed the earlier tip about the Gnomish Army Knife,  buy one before the expansion opens.   They are guaranteed to be in demand from farmers and gathering levelers.

Gold-Making 101: The Basics

Join us on a journey from rags to riches. The Gold-Making 101 series will walk you through the basics of getting started on your road to the gold-cap. This week we cover some of the basics that will be the foundation for your gold-making journey.

Options For Making Gold
There are lots of options for making gold in the World of Warcraft. I'll go into specifics more in future posts, but for now, here are the basics:
  • QuestingCompleting quests, especially at the level-cap, can bring in a steady supply of gold. Once you've reached max-level, any quests you complete that would have awarded experience, instead reward gold. The more experience you would have gained, the more gold you can earn. In addition, you can sell or disenchant the quest rewards from some additional gold.
  • Daily QuestsEach character can do 25 daily quests each day. The gold reward varies between 10 - 20 gold per quest. As an added bonus, daily quests can help increase your reputation with various factions, granting access to recipes or other perks.
  • GrindingTake your best Area-of-Effect DPS toon, gather up a bunch of mobs, kill and loot. You gain gold from the junk you sell, plus you could net some valuable gear to sell on the auction house. There's also a very slight chance for rare world-drops worth big cash on the auction house or direct to other players.
  • Farming/GatheringGathering herbs, ore and leather can be quite lucrative and is a relatively safe gold-making venture. Sell your materials on the auction house or directly to other gold-makers in trade chat (use /2 to access the trade chat channel). Standard practice in trade chat is to post something along the lines of "WTS [x] stacks of [item] for [y] gold/stack. PST." WTS is short for "willing to sell", PST is short for "please send tell". If you aren't sure how much an item goes for, you can look up the average value at The Undermine Journal or check your local auction house. You need one of the gathering professions to collect the herbs/ore/leather. You can also farm cloth by killing and looting humanoid mobs. All of these items have good value to other players.
  • CraftingYou can actually increase the value of the raw materials received from farming/gathering by processing them into more lucrative finished goods. You will need professions such as Jewelcrafting or Enchanting to do this, and not all recipes are profitable.
  • Auction House FlippingLook for deals on the auction house on items that are underpriced, then re-sell the items for a higher price. This is a classic gold-making strategy that can be accomplished just by monitoring the auction house. There are some risks involved in the process as some items seem like great deals, but you're never able to sell them for a profit. Others are consistently available for deals to be resold later.
Professions
There are 2 classifications for professions: Primary and Secondary. Each character can have a maximum of 2 primary professions and all of the secondary professions. The primary professions can be broken into 2 groups as well: Crafting and Gathering. Each gathering profession supports a few crafting ones. The existing professions are:

Primary
  • Alchemy (Crafting, Blizzard's Overview)
Creates potions, flasks and transmutations. Uses herbs from Herbalism.
  • Blacksmithing (Crafting, Blizzard's Overview)
Creates plate armor and weapons. Uses ore from Mining.
  • Enchanting (Crafting, Blizzard's Overview)
Creates scrolls for enchanting weapons and armor. Also allows you to disenchant items for materials.
  • Engineering (Crafting, Blizzard's Overview)
Creates fun gadgets, scopes for ranged weapons and vanity pets/mounts. Uses some ore/bars from Mining.
  • Herbalism (Gathering, Blizzard's Overview)
Gather herbs from nodes placed throughout each zone.
  • Inscription (Crafting, Blizzard's Overview)
Creates glyphs, Darkmoon Cards and relics. Uses herbs from Herbalism.
  • Jewelcrafting (Crafting, Blizzard's Overview)
Creates gems for enhancing gear, as well as rings and necks. Uses ore from Mining.
  • Leatherworking (Crafting, Blizzard's Overview)
Creates leather and mail armor, plus leg enchants for melee classes. Uses leather from Skinning.
  • Mining (Gathering, Blizzard's Overview)
Gather ore from nodes placed throughout each zone.
  • Skinning (Gathering, Blizzard's Overview)
Gather leather from certain mobs throughout each zone.
  • Tailoring (Crafting, Blizzard's Overview)
Creates cloth armor, leg enchants for casters and bags. Uses cloth from killing humanoid mobs.
 Secondary
  • Archaeology (Crafting, Blizzard's Overview)
Dig artifacts from the ground in designated areas, found on the world map. Artifacts range in value from a few silver up to several hundred gold. There is also a chance for some rare drops for your character to use.
  • Cooking (Crafting, Blizzard's Overview)
Prepare food that characters use to buff stats, including party/raid-wide feasts.
  • First Aid (Crafting, Blizzard's Overview)
    Creates bandages from cloth.
  • Fishing (Crafting, Blizzard's Overview)
Catch fish from pools or bodies of water. Fish can be sold at the auction house raw or processed via cooking for sale as food.
Up Next: First Priorities and Your First 100 Gold
Come back next Friday for the next post in the series about getting started on your journey to gold-cap by making that first 100 gold.

Its all in the bag

For those that have asked,  or even if you've just asked yourself.  I've been having some personal issues
that's prevented me from writing.   Hopefully they are taken care of.    But on with the show.

Anyone who has played wow will tell you.  It's all in the bags. from the 16 slot [Netherweave Bags] crafted by tailors.   To the larger profession bags that add multiple slots to your toons personal storage ability.

But one of the biggest questions to ask is which one should I have?   Should I use the 32 slot [Pack of Endless Pockets] for my crafting inscriptionist.  Or just use the now common 16 slot bags found from multiple locations (you can even get larger storage bags from rare drops in certain dungeons and running quests).

It's really all about time and storage on why it's important to have as much bag space available for it's use.   Many of my toons I've leveled to 85 and then they just are used for crafting.   So it becomes more important for them to carry profession specific bags to give more room to store items.    Where two of my characters are used for raiding,  so they need the flexibility of regular bags to store anything,  plus also the ability to store mats during crafting cycles.

Also remember when looking at bag storage your personal bank for each character uses bag for it's storage area as well.   Swapping between regular bags and profession bags much each to move crafting materials between the bank and being on hand.   Leatherworking and blacksmithing makes this a very useful idea when swapping out bars and skins.

Gathering toons always will enjoy the convenience of the larger storage bags for skinning and mining.   Where the highest bags can become expensive depending on the server economy,  you might look at the slightly lower level bags that can be made available for a few coins.

If you don't have the crafting ability to make the large bags,   don't forget to just advertise having the materials and offering a tip to the crafter.   It can easily save you 100's of gold just for a few moments time.

One of my favorite sites Crafters Tome will give you a good idea of what bags are available for crafting
in the chosen profession.

Good luck and good hunting
