Ebay Warriors Prepare For Battle

That ripple effect that you felt has nothing to do with the announcement that anyone watching Blizzcon knew would be happening.

Blizzard announced in some blue notes that with Warlords of Draenor anyone purchasing the expansion would receive a free level 90 boost.  Not that earth shattering since many players will be looking to boost alts or toons that they have played before.

But here is where things get a little bit more tricky.   TPTB have also half way announced that you will be able to pay for the rights to boost other toons.  So anyone that has the cash can boost any toon to level 90 and instantly get them into Warlords of Draenore content.

Boo,  hiss,  boo, lynch them right?   But wait a second.   Hear this out before you start to get a rope for these California boys.  There are some pluses that go with getting more players into the game quickly.

-  Faster Instance times
-  Might help with the subscription loss from players
-  Eliminates the sticker shock of having a new player level all the way to 100
-  Allows players to test out new classes (maybe new tanks and healers?)

There is one big negative that is being brought up over the blogosphere.  First a little history lesson.  When the World of Warcraft MMO started you were able to purchase/sell items on auction sites such as ebay. There was a rash of gear and characters that were bought and sold digitally.  Many of your old school players still refer to these as 'ebay toons' because they were able to instantly jump into high level raids and frankly they sucked.  Having no time to spend leveling their skills and learning their abilities from 1-60, these players generally dragged down good players.  40 man raids were much more unforgiving at the time and if you ever ran old school Onyxia than 'more dots' was the battle cry for every lock.

But there is a large distinction between the game at that point and the game now.  If you have leveled a toon up to 90 since around patch 5.2 you can see just how much 'learning' players get from leveling.  Any instance, that someone says 'crowd control' is laughed at or with responses of 'what is that?'   Most quests and instances up to around level 85 are tank you grab everything,  healers keep the tank up, dps blow the snot out of them.  At level 90 it takes 30 minutes of study and a little bit of work on target dummies to figure out what someone is going to do.   Mostly a player's ability comes down to gear quality.  It is highly possible that when you purchase your level 90 toon that you will be outfitted with basic green/blue gear so that you are not buck naked for the world to see.

The other argument that people have against buying the level 90 boosts is that it will bring about the effect of being able to buy your way into high level content.   Run a couple of the Siege of Orgrimmar that someone says 'I have this buddy, I want to bring' and then tell me that people aren't already being carried in high level content.  With the new LFR system in place and invite system, it will become much easier to be more choosy about who you bring to the party.

As far as making money goes.  More toons always means the ability to have more professions available at your fingertips.  A player who is just starting out with one or two toons can instantly have a third set of professions that they only need to level.  Being able to instantly level to 90 might cut out the glut of low end materials that are prevalent in the Auction House.  Very few players are going to take the time out to run in a low level area just to do some farming.  This change could drive up the cost of materials. With this level 90 change don't be surprised if all of the professions receive major overhauls that allow players to level each profession quickly.  You can already level Blacksmithing and Jewelcrafting very quickly.  The idea is to get players quickly and painlessly into the new content.

Personally, I have no problem with the ability to purchase boosts for a fee.  A lot of the feeling of dread that players have is coming from old school feelings of elitism.  There is something to say about leveling 10 toons to level 90 and beyond.  No one wants to think that their last 4-6 years of work can be bought for the low, low price of 25 bucks (or whatever they choose to mark the boost mechanic at).  The best thing I can say to people who are already to chuck their warcraft careers is let the panic subside and see what the WOD brings. There will still be high level play in the game.  High level gear and excitement raid boss smashing galore.

Motivate the Gold Troops

Mommar here.

It's just a little bit over three weeks before the panda infestation begins.   With this expansion pack there seems to be less of a feel of excitement than any of the previous ones.  It could be the overhaul of the talent tree.  Or the pet battles in the future.   Or one of several parts of Mists Of Pandaria that are feeling a little lackluster to many.

For me and the house of JMTC,  we are excited with the new expansion.   I"m looking forward to new places to view.  New lore to read and to enjoy and new character classes.   But the one thing that does creep into view is motivation to make gold.

I'll be honest with you faithful readers.  I could stop making gold and buy just about anything I want on the open market.   I have done the route of giving gold to players,  and buying items for everyone so they could enjoy.   There is a mountain of materials in guild banks with my toons name on them ready to buy and sell at a moments notice.  So making more gold is not a motivation buy itself.

What does motivate me is the thrill of the hunt.   I enjoy finding deals and sharing it with other players (yes my gang of goblins that includes you).   From the smallest deal to the deals that can rake in a large amount of gold for your coffers.   It's what motivates me to continue and make gold (and give it away from time to time).

One of the big things that motivates me will be the Black Market Auction House.  I was sorely disappointed when the Olympics in China gave the Spirit of Competition pet.   For some strange reason I only got this pet on my hunter toon and not my main raiding toon.   It was one of the few pets that I didn't have on my main,  and I always was saddened that he didn't have it.   The combination of all the pets was nice to see,  but I've had many ask where I got the pet and if they could get it.

In theory the Black Market Auction House is supposed to make extremely rare items available.  It's a very controversial subject because players who had earned these items the 'right way' will see them on others that just paid gold for them.   Others welcome another chance to purchase mounts and pets that otherwise they would never be able to have for their collection.

This motivates me as it should you to make gold now.  Having a goal of one or two items that are on your must have list will keep the gold making blood flowing.  As your dragging through this months Darkmoon Faire dailies,  and even through making gold through your professions.   Keeping your goal in mind will get you through the grind.

Patching Up for 5.04

Hey Goblins,  it's Mommar.

Two more days of gameplay til it all changes again.  With Blizzard seemingly determined to make changes on a daily if not hourly basis,  gaming life is going to become fun.   A quick checklist of things to make sure you've taken care of before the server start and patching for 5.0.4

-    Convert all your Blackfallow Ink to other inks

The Ink converter at the home city (Orgrimmar/Stormwind) is going to be changing to the new conversion for ink (Starlight Ink).  So between Thursday's patch and the opening of the Pandaria gates Blackfallow Ink will be readily available.

-   DE or Vendor Relics and items used to craft them.

The Relic Slot disappears with Mists of Pandaria.   And any item that is slotted for the Relic Slot will become gray.

-  Hunters lose their melee weapon slots.

This will make one less outlet for those swords with agility on them (rogues) or maces.  So keep an eye on them in your inventory knowing you don't have poor hunters to sell too.   Also keep an eye on sellers who are looking to vendor these swords quickly.   They might not see the potential of sales to Rogues or even as Disenchant Fodder.

-  Keep your add-ons Updated.

This is a general rule whenever a patch is updated.  Many developers already have updates to their add-ons available for download.  Even after you have patched up the client make sure to download any updates.  No one likes to see error messages flash when they first log on.

-  Keep your ear to the boards and pages.

Wisdom is found in many places.  Not just on one site.   Little tidbits can be found that could be the difference between confusion and confidence.

-  Keep on buying and stockpiling materials.

I had to disappoint some because of technical problems I didn't get my list of things to save out.   There is still going to be 30+ days to save which will give you plenty of time.

-   Look at back entries on what to prep.

This is where your knowledge sets you ahead of the rest.  Got all your BOA gear ready to send to the new toon?  Got bags ready?   Got that Gnomish Army Knife ready to put across to the new kid in town?   The race starts the minute that your server comes online (expect delays as always).  On the right are the keywords that you can look for previous articles on.   Good reading while your downloading the patch.

-   Lose the Prime of your Glyph Life

One of the big announcements was a shuffling of the Prime slots and glyphs for Mists of Pandaria.  They will either become Major/Minor Glyphs with a few becoming faded Glyphs.   Your spell book will look different.   If you have been out of the Inscription market,  this is the perfect time to get started back in.  Glyphmas Part II should start with the new patch.   Having a large amount of preset glyphs will put you ahead of the game.

-   Get ready to have some fun.

The time between the opening patch and the beginning of an expansion is enjoyable.   There has been little talk of the world event that brings on an expansion pack.   Wrath of the Lich King gave us the Zombie Invasion.   Burning Crusade had the all out war in Azeroth.   Be ready to have some fun,  loot some items and spend some time with friends.

MOP Prep: Whose up first?

Mommar Here.

So the past few days I've been steadily thinking about who to level first.  The new XP numbers seem to push the idea that it will take about 30 hrs give or take to level.

For the last two Expansion packs I looked to level one of my raiding characters first.  I started off with my Warrior (aptly named Mommar) who leveled in about 6 days.  I didn't spend 100% of the time I could to level due to extra things in my life.   Once I had him leveled and exploring the new world,  I turned towards my second character to level.   This was my hunter gathering toon (my Hunter Move).

She leveled through quests but spent a lot of time killing mobs for skins and getting ore to feed into Mommar (he is my Leatherworking/Blacksmithing specialist).  Slowly but surely I finished leveling everyone who I was going to level during the cataclysm expansion pack.  The last one leveled to 85 was my Paladin.  By this time I was slightly burnt out of questing in the New Azeroth (Doing the same 7 quests will destroy your will to visit any place.)

Spending countless hours with Auction House chores (by this time I was no longer raiding with my guild) I continued to work on gaining gold,  spending gold and overall just enjoying another aspect
of the game.  If I had to do things differently I would have probably concentrated more on obtaining
my professions maximized first and then worked on gearing.

There are three different types of reasons someone chooses to level a character.

1.   New Class/New abilities to try out
2.   Play Style/Enjoyment
3.   Gold Making possibility.

The first two are self explanatory.  They are choices that a player has to make on their own.  Do you
want to play a Panda or a monk?  Did you not roll a goblin with the last expansion?   These are going to
drive a majority of the players on the choices they make.

For me,  I'm looking at strictly on a gold making level.   We know from the Betas that professions are
going to have to level to at least 87 to be able to maximize out their abilities. Vale of Eternal Blossoms
is where the patterns are sold.   But the question is going to be what is the most profitable to get there.

A farming toon has a strong catalyst when it comes to leveling at the start of an expansion.   The playing
field is even because there are no real stockpiles of the new materials.   The farming toon has the ability
to command their own prices for what they collect while finishing up quests and exploring new territory.
Other professions are dependent on the stock of others,  whether gathered by their farming toons or
purchased from outside sources.

But one Profession can make and use their own materials.   The Enchanter has a distinct advantage over
the rest of the professions.   They can recycle their items that are no longer useful into materials that can
be crafted into something else.  Or sold on the open market.   Putting together both a crafter and tailor
(which is my toon Mosiac) becomes a very powerful combination from the start.  Nothing ends up going
waste or is vendored just for gold.

So I decided that when MOP starts I'll be pushing heavy to level my Enchanting/Tailor combination first.
At least to 87 to open up the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.  Most of my other characters will follow in suit
with my two raiding characters as well as my backup band.

What reasons are you looking to level specific toons?  Who's on first when the gates of Pandaria open?

Return to your Essence

Every expansion pack has new enchants.  New equipment and new toys.  Players leveling new toons,  new professions and enjoying the old world before they reach the new world.

So a gold goblin has to return to what 'got them to the show'.  Old world items that can be sold for a profit.  Items that right now might be inexpensive for now,  later to be sold for extensive profits.  One of my favorites is the Essences used from 'Vanilla' warcraft.

Essence Of Air
Essence of Earth
Essence of Fire
Essence of Water
Essence of Undeath

Why are these so valuable?   Enchants,  Enchants and Enchants.

Players want the enchants for their low level weapons that these Essence items can bring.

Essence Of Air brings us Enchants 2H Weapon - Agility and Enchant Weapon - Agility
Essence of Earth gives us Enchant Weapon - Strength
Essence of Fire brings Enchant Weapon - Fiery
Essence of Water sets up Enchant Weapon - Healing Power
Essence of Undeath brings Enchant Weapon - Unholy

You might ask that there is easier ways to make gold.  I have all of these shiny new patterns to play with.  Why would I go and spend time grinding out essences for a few gold.

Having your gold goblin fingers in multiple markets gives you a heavy advantage over other Auction House players.  Each part of your empire is created by even the little things.

This is also why grinding out certain reputations become very important now that the lull between expansions occur.  Many of these enchants require high reputation with the Timbermaw Hold clan from Azeroth.   The Wowwiki entry for Timbermaw Hold gives a very detailed grind to exalted.   At level 85 the grind could take as little as 2 hours.

These essence are already rare due to their grinding spots.   Fire from Ungoro, Air from Silithus.  Water is farmed in Azshara.  All of these from the elementals in this area.  Even selling in raw form will reap hundreds of gold during MOP.  Not a bad day of work on many servers.

Other old world materials will have the same demand.  It's finding these gems that will put you on the road to truly being a gold goblin master.

Farming and You

At one point I wrote and article You will Farm and You Will Like It giving a brief discussion on the trials and tribulations of the warcraft gamer.

Farming in Warcraft at one point was a necessary evil.  Auction House Prowess was a very rare commodity during 'Vanilla' wow.  Which gold gurus being held in high esteem.  As the progression of expansion packs created more and more markets for sales,  this esteem lost a little bit of its luster.   Knowledge of how to sell,  and what to sell was passed on to players,  to the point that the raiding community could do the majority of their chores without the need to spend hours farming their own materials.  They could spend their time and energies gaining items to increase their power,  or in some cases vanity items.

If you look specifically at the materials farming professions (mining, herbing, skinning) there still is a great demand for these items.   Blizzard having tightened up the screws on 'Chinese Gold Farmers' has evened out the market giving the casual farmer just as much ability to gain gold with this method.

There is always a cost to making gold in Warcraft.  In farming,  the cost is time and effort.  The cost of the items that are needed for basic and even advanced farming is minimal.  Even if you go and purchase the best farming items (Gnomish Army Knife,  Enchants for gloves),  the investment still ends up being minimal.

The one thing to look at is that a little bit of information will get you a log way when it comes to farming.  Information will be quickly found on the best farming spots with the MOP release.  Having these little pieces of information will end up putting you above the other farmers running to sell their collected materials on the market.

Farming is one of many tools that you should be prepared to use in your arsenal of gold making toolbox.  Without it,  you are at the mercy of others for your gold making needs.

Its a Date

So now that the Blizzard powers that has announced the date of September 26, 2012 for the release of Mists of Panderia.   We have a goal date to be finished with our pre expansion needs.   I will start to beging to release my notes on what to grab to save for the upcoming rush of professions,  levelers and sellers.

Also this gives a good chance to review what chores you should have done before the panda invasion rolls out

Tell your boss you're going to need a "few days" off

Stop and plot out the munchies deals.  Stock up on chips and pop and other drinks.

Tell your girlfriend/boyfriend/pets that you won't be seeing them except if they are online

Have all your profession toons at their maximum,  and your crafting toons at 83 or higher.  It would
be preferable to have them at 85 just in case the developers throw a screwball at us and require a higher
level to max out your professions.

Stack your
archeology tokens to fill out each race.   This should grab you a few points towards finishing
what will still continue to be a long drawn out profession.  If your looking at getting a realm first this is
a must do when it comes to archaeology.

Have your toons in place where you want them to be.   Remember that the first couple of hours
opening zones are going to be flooded by players killing the same mobs,  turning in the same quests.

Be prepared for issues,  downtime,  quick patches,  more down time,  frustration,  and overall the normal
things that happen while playing a new expansion pack.

Have your favorite web pages at your fingertips ready to see updates.   Obviously I'm bias to JMTC for
the first page I hope you have open.  As well as http://thegoldqueen.com/ and Consortium forums ready for any quick updates.

Don't be too quick to sell all of your items you've gathered to flip on the market.  You aren't giong to be the only seller, and many players will be listing their items at prices to get a quick buck.  Be prudent and prepared to not just sell,  but also buy and flip materials if they are at too low a price.   Items such as Netherweave and ore should be going for 2 to 3 times the cost of buying them.   So anything lower and hold your ground.   Some will look at it as a sprint,  we as gold goblins don't sprint,  we ride in style.

And the last thing.  Be prepared to have fun.   Even in frustration and in the excitement of the new areas.   Have fun,  it's a game your paying for.  That's the important thing in life.

You can buy the downloadable game when you enter your battle.net account.  Or go to a local midnight
opening to buy the retail box.  Come dressed as your favorite Night Elf (female if your going to send me pictures thank you).

Good Luck and Good Hunting.
