Many long-time readers here are at the point in their gold progression where they can focus on lucrative, high-payoff gold making ventures like the recent stockpiling and selling of goods for 4.3. But what if you're just starting off making gold? Either you're too low level to max professions or you don't have much capital to invest?
Well, the new Darkmoon Faire has some options for you! One of the new features is the weekly profession quest. I took my main character to the Faire and figured I'd do the profession quests just to do them. I quickly found some roadblocks to quick completion: I had to leave the Faire and return to Stormwind to purchase supplies.
So this led me to thinking, why not sit and sell the reagents needed for the quests? I gladly would have overpaid for them in order to save the trip back to a city. Not all the professions need items from a town, but here are the ones that do:
Tailoring
1 Coarse Thread, 1 Red Dye, 1 Blue Dye, sold by the tailoring supply vendors. Ask a guard for tor the location of the Tailor trainer in any capital if you aren't sure where to go. The base cost before discounts is 10 copper for the thread and 50 copper for each dye, or 1 silver, 10 copper for the group.
Inscription
5 Light Parchment, sold by the Inscription supply vendors. Ask a guard for tor the location of the Inscription trainer in any capital if you aren't sure where to go. The base cost before discounts is 15 copper per sheet, or 75 copper for the group.
Cooking
5 Simple Flour, sold by the Cooking supply vendors. Ask a guard for tor the location of the Cooking trainer in any capital if you aren't sure where to go. The base cost before discounts is 25 copper per flour, or 1 silver, 25 copper for the group.
Leatherworking
10 Shiny Bauble, 5 Coarse Thread, 5 Blue Dye. See Tailoring, above, for information on the Coarse Thread and Blue Dye. Shiny Baubles are available from fishing supply vendors. There's actually a fishing vendor on Darkmoon Island that sells these, but some people might not bother looking. If you skip the Baubles, you'll need 3 silver for the thread and dye. If you purchase some Baubles to save your customers the hassle, you'll need another 5 silver, or 8 silver total.
Alchemy
5 Moonberry Juice, sold by Innkeepers. Stop by your favorite inn to get some. The base cost before discounts is 20 silver each, or 1 gold for the group.
Once you have the materials, park yourself at the faire and advertise in General Chat (/1 will start typing in general chat) that you have materials for these 5 professions. When I was playing around with it, I found it most helpful to play off the convenience factor, and generally sold supply packs for 5 gold across the board. At worst, that's still 4 gold in profit for each pack.
I didn't stay long, because I had other things to do that were more profitable, but if you don't have the capital or professions to do those other things, this is a great start. One particularly useful message I was barking was: "Tailoring, Inscription, Cooking, Leatherworking and Alchemy quest items for sale! Turn 5 gold into 16, get 4 tickets and 5 free skill points in your profession!"
Don't underestimate how much gold people are willing to spend to avoid the hassle of gathering these materials themselves. You still have a couple days to give it a try, but chances are most of the player base that is going to do the quests are already through them. But keep this in mind for the next Darkmoon Faire as a way to make some start-up capital!
Sure there are ways you can make sure your investments are "risk free" but there aren't a whole lot of options, and if they are most of the time they're limited and rely on a single item, thus bringing you back to square one; Risk.
I'll give you another example: Dirge's Kicking Chimera Chops. This recipe was said to be become a vendor item for a couple silver during the Cataclysm beta. What ended up happening? The recipe was NOT sold by a vendor and the quest line for this recipe was removed. Those who took the risky route and bought those 3-5k recipe are now selling them for much, much more than they originally paid for them. I've seen a couple go for as much as 150,000g on several servers via The Undermine Journal.
How much is too much? How much is too little?
You'll have to figure that out on your own. I can't help you out here, it really depends on what item you're stockpiling. When stockpiling for something big, you'll typically want a good amount of surplus. Trust me you don't want to have too little when you realize that you're getting a 2000% ROI on your investment. You want to have a "fair" amount when stockpiling anything, you'll want somewhere in the middle where it's not too little, but it's not too much.
On the other hand, don't dump all your gold on a single item. Rule #1 of making gold like a pro: Diversify. What happens if your investment fails? Nothing good I can tell you that much. You're left with too much of a useless item that simply won't sell. Unless you can diversify with said item you're pretty much screwed.
At the end, investing in risky markets is what has made me thousands of gold. Sure I've lost some gold due to some of my deals falling through the floor but the reward almost always comes out on top when it battles risk.
Dalaran has come and gone, it is now a desert wasteland only seeing a couple handful of visitors at it's peak, instead of the hundreds upon hundreds of players the city used to maintain. What does this leave us with? An excellent gold making oppurtinity.
Dalaran has several shops & vendors that sell a wide variety of items, now that this city is rarely visited by players, the competition for these items has decreased, thus creating a way to net yourself a nice chuck of change. In this small guide I will cover the top items that can be bought from vendors and later resold at the AH for insane amounts of gold.
Dalaran Hats
This one came up in Friday nights ventrilo meeting, a couple people said they've been making a killing selling these hats, as simply there is no competition and people are too lazy to get ported to Dalaran and then get another port back to a main city. No competition allows you to put these hats up at virtually any price ( I'd say under 500g for best results ).
Dalaran Bouquet & Flowers
A vendor named Aerith Primrose who is located right outside the violet hold, she sells flowers & bouquets. This is a very niche market. I rarely see these items posted at the AH because people simply don't know these exist. There are a total of 6 flowers/bouquets, ranging anywhere from 4 silver to 40g. I did a guest post over at Cold's Gold Factory on these bouquets way back then, I suggest you check it out.All in all these flowers are an excellent way to boost your daily income. The risk is low as you can buy the flowers for as little as 4 silver. I can sell these flowers anywhere from 25-100g per.

Lately I've been putting out a lot of "guide-ish" posts, the best place to farm whiptail, best skinning farming spot, even how to use my own personal user interface. Well today I'd like to make a guide-ish post on selling vendor bought item at the Auction House, let's start it shall we?
Enchanting Vellums
These can be bought from any enchanting vendor, they cost anywhere from 8s to 10s ( depending on your faction discount ). They can be bought in unlimited quantities, and they sell rather well. Enchanting vellums are made by scribes, and they're fairly cheap to make, but making them this way, it will cost you way more than 10 silver.
I personally buy them in stacks of 100, and post in lots of 5. They can be sold anywhere from 2g each, to 5g each. It's really good gold if you're starting out. Even if you already have tons of gold, extra profit can't hurt, can it?
Jeweler's Setting
This item is used to craft jewelcrafting ring and neck. Most people don't know that it's bought from a vendor and run over to the auction house. They cost 1g 90s ( after rep discount ), and can be sold anywhere from 10-25g per. It's a little riskier if you don't have much gold and are just starting out, but even if you manage to sell one at 25g, that's 1000% of a return on your initial investment.
