Do you Own Your Tree?

If you read the blurb at the end of my articles you can see that I spend much of my time on the Shandris server.   This has been the home for myself and the alt army since I started this game.  There have been other servers I've dipped my foot into,  but Shandris has been home for my gaming.

There are a mix of characters that have come and gone on the server.   I wouldn't say that Shandris is anything spectacular.  We have a little above average raiding group.  A average to above average economy (which I'm trying to make extraordinary of course) and a pretty good group of players.  With any server you get players who probably should be doing other things than griping in trade.

But there are a few that have made themselves known just simply by one thing.  They pseudo own a piece of property in Orgrimmar.   While watching trade chat he will announce his wares depending on which alt and profession he's selling that day,  and it all revolves around a tree that almost everyone knows is his tree in Orgrimmar.

I"ve even seen arguments of others saying 'that's not your tree,  that tree belongs to everyone.  Seems like a very valid argument til 10 players verbally lay a beat down on them saying 'he has had that tree for years'.  It's a fascinating deluge of support for something that technically isn't a part of the Warcraft game.   This is the epitome of having a reputation that everyone knows.

The question is have you set up your reputation in your home city that players know?   Do you have a spot that players know to come to you.  In the beginnings of wow I would see players (as well as myself) run to whoever had 5g for my crafting wares.   This was long before I looked to dominate the Auction House.  Running like a panting dog to get another 5-10g into my coffers.  As I progressed I saw a change in my attitude because I could wait for them to come to me.  Controlling my own crafting and selling destiny instead of being dependent on the whims of others.  Before the biggest letdown was that a player would change their mind the minute I arrived to finish the transaction.

Do I own a tree in Orgrimmar?   No,  not really.   There are players who know the spots that I pop up from my hearthstone so if I am arriving in town they know to wait there.   But I'm more partial to bushes than trees.   Still,  it would be nice to own a nice oak in Silvermoon.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Patch 5.2: Tap That Mob

In 5.2 a new mob tapping mechanism is getting added.   Previously a mob (boss or even regular) is placed on the first tap system.  Whoever hits it first gets credit for the kill and gets the reward.  Some of the quest mobs could be hit later and the kill would be recorded towards the quest but the player would have no chance for any gold or items.

Just about everyone has run into the problem where they were a little late seeing a rare mob,  and someone had already tagged the rare.  So a player could either walk away and pout,  or be a good soul and help with the kill with no chance at credit or loot.  With the new system it will encourage players to jump into the fray and help with the kill.  Here's how it works:

If a quest/rare mob is tagged by one player then they are at their regular health.    If another player enters the fight then the mob will have it's health jump by 50%.  Another player adds another 50% and so forth.   Simple math can give you that this can take a regular 750k mob into 2-3 million in health in no time.  But the bonus is that all of the loot is separate (magically they spring extra pockets for each person,  lets not ask the logic on this one).

So the obvious idea is to make sure that if you see someone kicking the trash out of a rare or high powered quest mob you should stop and join in.  Especially for rares that drop some interesting trinkets and loot.  Ignoring a chance to get a couple of hits in for a chance at loot won't pay the bills at the end of the day.

I wonder how this will affect world bosses.   Instead of seeing alliance/horde staredowns over Galleon you will have a lot of cross faction violence to look forward too.

Now i wonder just how high someone will be able to get a mob.  This should be interesting.

Patch 5.2: The Great Ghost Iron Ore Rush

With 5.2 now delayed at least a week (or two) this still gives some time to get some more material gathering for flipping.

Blacksmithing was given a huge game changer with the announcement that you will be able to level a blacksmith from 1 to 500 with just Ghost Iron Ore/bars.   This sounds nice doesn't it?

But don't get stuck into a trap of thinking that lots of people will start leveling blacksmithing at this point in the game.  They are more apt to level a more money making profession (Jewelcrafting,  Leatherworking, etc.).   Many players are dumping their old world stock and looking to flip Ghost Iron Bars for profit.  This is viable but ultimately will end up driving the market up to the point that players will turn again to the old world materials that end up being cheaper.

It will have a drastic effect on Jewelcrafting and Alchemy for their crafting timers.   The Jewelcrafting shuffle will end up becoming more expensive at the outset for those crafters that didn't stock up on their ore from the start.  The alchemist will be in the same boat from the high demand that will occur for Living Steel for the new patterns released with patch 5.2.

Just like any patch wave at some point this all will slow down and the prices will come down to a normal level.   The Ghost iron bar/ore price point will stay higher than it is now,  but once the miners get their stock out and players are happy with the their addition to their alt army the demand for the ore should be in a better price range.

Still,  Investing in a few stacks (a few depending on your level of funds available) should be a boost to your gold making.  If your in one of the heavy usage professions for ore (Blacksmithing,  Jewelcrafting,  Alchemy) then stocking up on what you need now will benefit greatly.   I would set my price point between 50-60g per stack and jump on anything that drops below that.   Again depending on your current money levels investing 5% of your stock should net you at least a 100% gain if the markets play out correctly.

Just keep into your eyes the status of your server economy.  If your economy is depressed then sinking gold where players won't be willing to buy is just giving away your fortune.  The same thing goes for a hyper inflated server,  buying just for your own personal use and not being concerned with resell will give you a steady step as you continue through Patch 5.2.

Bring on the Thunder King,  I have stuff to sell to him too.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

5.2 Watch: Capping Justice Points

Mommar here.

In less than 24 hours there will be either many many MANY screams of "you promised" or another server reset and maintenance day.

All of this possible angst brought to us from the dissection of one comment.   After the announcement of the patch date being Feb 26,  Everyone rushing off to spend their valor points due to the statement that valor points would be converted downwards to justice points.

The Blizzard powers that be recanted this change later in the week stating that the valor points would no longer be reset (Thanks Uncle Blizzard for the Valor Points).   This does not mean that tomorrow players won't be waking up to long load times as the new patch updates and deploys on the server.

Unfortunately, if you haven't hit your weekly topping off of valor points then you have today to finish if this scenario plays out.   Now 1000+ valor points is nothing to shake a stick at.    Valor gear should be half price after the patch day so that 1000 points now will go to become 2000 points.  But the ability to upgrade gear
Disappears till at least patch 5.3.   So balancing out your expectations on gear between patch day and arriving at gear level reputation with the new reputation vendors.

What gets lost in the patch gear is the release of BOA leveling gear for Justice Points.   Justice points items have seriously suffered from excitement all through the Mists of Pandaria.   The gear obtained via Justice points were at a lower ilvl to Heroic Raid gear.  So these items were used to spot fill gear selection items till a suitable replacement from Heroics or Raid/crafted gear.

Patch 5.2 and farther will bring a lot of players to start to heavily level their alt army.   Professions weren't as pressed to maximize their leveling exploits to be viable.   Jewelcrafting could finish off their patterns from grinding in Jade Forrest for a few hours.  Blacksmithing and Leatherworking and tailoring needed reputation from Klaxxi and Golden Lotus to become viable in many markets.  So BOA gear becomes that much more important to get the alt army to 85 and into the hunt to get the army to 90 with regular gear upgrades.

The key to look at is that many players already have most of their alt army at 85.   So Justice Points again sit there without an outlet until level 90.  Then spent to do a quick gear upgrade to get you into Heroic/raiding position that much quicker.

So hopefully tomorrow there isn't a sudden shift in the force,  like 8 million players finding out that their time is over to finish capping their valor points.   Here's to hoping tomorrow stays just the same as any other server reset the day and then we all receive a patch 5.2 reprieve.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

(There was a PTR release two hours after this article was written so it's pretty much a guarantee that we are all safe for another week of grinding out valor points)

As we are in the home stretch to patch 5.2 it's difficult not to remember the trials and tribulations to come.  With a one new Raid instance and another world boss many players will be returning to the old dungeons to maximize their reputation with different groups in the game.   This will follow with many players having run these instances time after time after time after (you get the idea).

The interesting part is that there are a few that are looking to return to the game or even start to play in Pandyland.   New players and returning players get to run into the wall of attitude that happens from time to time.  The expectations that players who are relatively overgeared for instances are 'carrying' the team.

No one will ever accuse me of being the best player in Warcraft.   But I hold my own.   Even then I will make mistakes,  especially with some of the short cuts that players will take instances.  Skipping mob groups to speed up their collection of Valor tokens and reputation.   The majority of players are good sports and will get a little grouchy then moving on.  But occasionally you just run into someone wanting to qualify as the Richard of the week (Think nicknames people).

But they also have a right to play exactly the way they want too.   They can gripe and fuss and yell noob as many times as they want.   The same rights and privileges I have to completely ignore them,  or even laugh at their 'greatness' in a made up game with made up items.

And that truly is the key to remember.  Ultimately the only thing that is real with Warcraft are the people behind the keyboard.   Whether they really are not that good,  or you run into the #1 player in the world in your instance group.  Real players have real issues.  The guy griping and complaining might have 4 keys balancing on their knee and a wife who lets him half an hour a day to play.  Or they could be a 14 year old who is failing at math and health class.

Even if they are none of this,  feeding fuel into the fire never solves anything.   The best way to handle a bully in an instance is to ignore them,  find out if you are in error and then fix the problem.   And if you find that it's truly not tolerable.   Drop the instance and go onto the next one.   There are plenty of daily quests,   action house duties or even sitting in the middle of trade chat.   All can be just as exciting as listening to a blow-hole shooting their mouths off about how awesome they are in a game.

Now,   If I can only remember to hit that stupid bugs soft spot,  then he won't yell at me again.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Patch 5.2: Know They Economy

Mommar here.

As myself and many players are prepping for Patch 5.2 and the explosion of changes,   I wanted to talk to you about some of the basics.

I believe it is just as important to not just point at what to buy,  what to sell or resell but also important to know what drives every economy.   The players and expectations of buyers and sellers behind the scenes.

As an expansion matures the goals of the players change along with the days and expectations.  Whether the economy is slow in some sorts or more robust.  Playing to the strengths and weaknesses of the server becomes just as important as what to stock for the next patch.

With the new patch there will be lots of opportunities in each discipline.   The key to being on top is to know what others will want.  If you have a large collection of tanks and DPS specs that have Leatherworking requirements,  placing your emphasis on crafting and knowledge of Leatherworking becomes an asset.  If you have many plate wearers that are looking for materials,  then your knowledge and technique becomes your driving force for sales.

But also look at bucking the trends.  There are many different items available just simply because they are abandoned by others.   Many engineers bemuse sales and what isn't seen as big ticket items but the sales of Ghost Iron Dragonling to leveling players still go strong.

Look to see what is selling,  and what is also preparing to be sold.  Keeping your eyes open both in instances and in town can give you just where an economy is going.   Sales are not a guesswork for a server but a complete view of how the entity lives.

Keep your head above the flow and know your server.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Patch 5.2: New Leatherworking Pattern Dailies

Mommar here.

For anyone that leveled a jewelcrafter during Mists of Pandaria they are very familiar with obtaining patterns for blue level cuts.   For those that don't,  you were offered two choices.  You had one daily cooldown that allowed you to craft one of the prisms to crack open for a recipe.   You also had the option of spending a Spirit of Harmony to bypass the daily lockout.   Fun for all the boys and girls as they were leveling.

With patch 5.2 Leatherworking gets to enjoy this same system for adding new recipes.   There are two new patterns added that are drops from mobs around Mists of Pandaria.

Magnificence of Scales

Magnificence Of Leather

Both are strong necessary recipes to obtain the new patterns.  Basically you burn your daily and have a chance of learning one of the new recipes.   Pretty easy right?    And can be very good for the skinning profession.  If you take a look at the math you'll see that making one Magnificent Hide with the cooldown will have half the cost.  Then any other hides that day that are crafted will be at the full price.   This really feels like a Blizzard version of buy one get one at half price plus a recipe.

There are a lot of benefits to this type of system,  especially without any type of override from a Spirit of Harmony.   This will slowly add the patterns to each realm (look for lots of advertising in trade chat looking for specific items).  It will also give a good boost to a depressed market that both the Leatherworking and Skinning market have become.

So this means that farm skinning will become very important before and after patch 5.2.  Not just to sell but also to obtain the patterns themselves.   A player who is sitting on a large pile of unprocessed skins will put themselves far up the gold goblin pile.

For the leatherworkers themselves,  it's important to have a stockpile of both the raw skins as well as some of the hides themselves.    Each of the new patterns requires a large amount of the Hides and will be in high demand.  Especially for players wanting to jump-start alt's.   The first two to four weeks will determine just how much profit players will be able to obtain just from providing the raw materials.

Don't ignore a side business of just flipping conversions of hide products for players.  Many players to avoid paying a higher price for the Auction House will gather their own materials that are BOE and then pay less to have the item crafted for them directly.   Just keep in mind your time and effort are at a premium.   We've talked previously about tipping vs charging a fee.  In this case,  charge them a fee (if they aren't happy,  they can sit around and find someone else to do it or negotiate a better price.).

Patch 5.2 could easily jump-start a sagging Leatherworking economy.  Be one of the first on the server to get into the goods.  And wallow around in the profits to come.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Patch 5.2 Prep: Farming the Auction House

 Mommar here.

The first thing I should say is that I am not completely against the idea of farming materials.   For many it is relaxing to just put the brain on autopilot and grab materials,  kill mobs and overall enjoy a relatively non thinking activity in the world of Azeroth.

For many the holiday season we are in now [Love Is In The Air] has many players sitting in Uldum farming mobs for their lovely Lovely Charm Bracelet for their daily turn ins.   But For Patch 5.2 farming is needed to be increased to be prepared for the high demand.

For myself I prefer looking for materials that are inexpensive from the auction house.  I think it's important to treat the auction house farming the same as actual farming out in the world.   Searching for the nodes and leftovers that players are attempting to get gold in,  looking for easy deals and large amounts of surplus items.

The big reason why auction house farming becomes important is time management.   There are many days that 10 minutes of material searching will give me the same amount of materials that I can obtain from two hours of farming.   This obviously does cut into the bottom line of my crafting profits when I have to invest gold up front.  The measurement is whether your gold investment is more valuable than the time investment in 'normal' material farming.

Now you do have a wrinkle as I said when it regards holidays such as Love is in the Air the easy way is to go and sit around mobs that are quickly destroyed.  But I find that farming mobs in a higher range ends up giving more profits.  Much of my farming in regards to the bracelets are done in instances and my dailies.  By the time I'm finished with all of the dailies and instances I have enough for one to two days full of turn ins.  The rest can be barked for in trade chat for profit.  The farther along and more desperate players get to finish off the turn ins for the holiday the more that can be charged.   I'm still seeing 40-60g per charm bracelet being asked for.

Just keep in mind that planning out your own personal farming strategy is just as important as getting your Best in Slot gear.   Having a plan and executing will allow you to get your farming chores done and still enjoy the world of warcraft.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Patch 5.2: Jewelcrafters

Mommar here.

We're approximately 2 weeks away (give or take depending on the whims of the powers that be) so I wanted to take a look at individual professions.

Up on the block first is Jewelcrafting.   Jewelcrafting has been hit or miss with Mists of Pandaria.   It's a steady money maker for man,  but that big burst of gold that occurred both during Wrath and Cataclysm with the shuffles being available wasn't there during Mists of Pandaria.

This major change in Jewelcrafting operation made the Jewelcrafting business rough from the start.  By now you should have a majority if not all of the cuts.   At the end of any patch time frame gems tend to start to drift down to a low profit rate.   Seeing the main four stat gems (agi,  strintstam) dropping down to below 60-70g per gem.

This becomes the prime area to look for those bargain basement deals for flipping.   Patch 5.2 is going to introduce a large amount of new socketable gear.   And the demand is not going to be just for the pure stat gems but many of the mix gems (str-crt) for example.  Figuring out which ones will be in demand on your server from the start will be paramount to becoming top goblin on the server.

With 5.2 epic meta gems are going to be introduced.  This caused a tremble in the Jewelcrafting force because it made it appear that the previous met gems would become worthless.  But keep in mind that the
Quest line to obtain the epic gem won't be completed by everyone.   Players on many servers won't be able to find groups either guild or looking for a raid that will be able to complete all of the requirements for the raid quest line.  This should keep the meta gem market healthy as players are able to obtain head pieces requiring sockets and gems.

The key to Jewelcrafting with 5.2 is going to be diversity and a specific attack structure.   Just throwing up gems will be both a waste of time and blanks that won't gain you anything.    Adding non saleable gems such as the parry-stamina gems will just have you posting up items that will not sell.   Keeping your straight stat gems cranking out as long as they are at your profit level (I like 30% or higher myself) and your mix gems.  Need to know what gems are going to be the best for you?   Hit up the gang at wowpopular.com
to get a good idea of what should be up and around.

Now I bet you think we forgot PVP gems?   They have been the missing link to many sales.  The PVP resilience vs PVP power has caused a lot of confusion.   The easiest way to look at PVP gems is that most players won't stack resilience unless they are hardcore PVPers (arenas and battlegrounds).  Most pvp players will continue to add PVP power gems with some resilience.  So adding the main stat-pvp power to your listing arsenal should add more profits to your future pocketbook.

Just keep in mind that you are in control of what to place up.  Drive the market instead of letting the market drive you.   If a market is weak,  flip that market to a higher price.  Don't get caught in an auto pilot of what is selling and what isn't selling.  A gold goblin controls their market with an iron fist,  and a purple Jewelcrafting kit.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Valentines Gifts For The Equipment Impaired

It's the day that many people dread.   The anti establishment will convert you to the belief that Valentines day was created as a marketing ploy to sell more candy and cards.   Moans and groans of people who waited until the last minute to get a gift for the one they love.   Mcdonalds parking lots full for that 'special meal' while the expectation of fun that won't happen later in the evening.

So if you're going to phone in another Valentines day why not at least get them something useful.   All people like to get new equipment and gear and mounts.   It will show them how much you think about them while you're laying the Smackdown on mobs.

And it's this train of thought that has kept many people single for their entire lives.   Valentines day has lost a lot of its luster since Walmart started advertising for it somewhere mid November of last year.   But certain gifts keep thoughts alive on what to give.

Take a look at your crafter and see just what you can make that has a more permanent nature.  Mounts that can be given to those you care about can make people feel much more special than a high five and a smack on the rump.

Valentines day isn't really a horrible holiday.  It's just lost that special feeling both in and out of the Warcraft universe.

Now I need to go deliver those 'Thrall is my valentine' to my friends

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Have you ever met that person that whenever they say 'sure is sunny outside' then it rains the rest of the week?   Well I am starting to feel that way about patch 5.2.

Just yesterday I commented about how the Valor points and Conquest points were going to be reset.   People rushing to make sure they have spent their points for valuable prizes.   Well thanks to Uncle Blizzard last night they have changed their mind.  Valor and Conquest points will not reset. (Ugh).

So this a tale of two cities when it comes to valor.  The current Valor items will be at half price (unless the big guys change their mind again) so you will end up with more bang for your buck item wise.  But after 5.2 the upgrading of items for valor points will not be available.  (Supposedly this will return in patch 5.3 but who is really counting that.)

It still is a good idea to have the majority of your items that you intend on keeping upgraded with your valor points before patch 5.2 hits.  There will be some new goodies from the Shadow Pan offensive and the Kirin Tor/Sunreaver Offensive.   But these will be very dependent on your reputation with either faction.   Having your gear in top shape for raiding with the next patch will put you above the average.

But this is a good journal and not a whine fest.   The same application of your raw materials your saving for patches and enhancements.   The one thing that might take a large hit is going to be Meta Gem Market.  5.2 introduces the next step in the epic raiding quest line.   Those that complete the questline end up getting a meta gem for their helm.  Depending on your server this could vastly impact the demand there is for meta gems from Jewelcrafters.  There will always be some demand when it comes to gear helms for raiding.  But when players reach their Best In Slot gear for their helm they won't be replacing those meta gems often.

Don't ignore the professions that tend to take a beating at the end of a raiding cycle.   Jewelcrafters are going to be in demand to fill up slots from the new gear.  Each tier of gear gives more slots and more opportunity for sales.  So picking up some of the base cut gems (str, agi, int, spirt) for cheap prices and then flipping them on the first week of Patch 5.2 should set you in a good place.

Currently the estimated release for patch 5.2 is the 26th of Feburary.  But with this Valor change and them stating you will be able to max out your valor before the patch it is possible that date will be moved back further.  But it's a better plan to just post on your calender for the 26th for everything to explode.

Keep your head above water and keep on planning.   Uncle Blizzard can't change his mind again can he????

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Something Stinks In The Air

Mommar here.

What a great way to start the week.   Everyone is getting ready for the new patch 5.2 (Whenever it's released.   Have to love Blizzards 'it will come out when it's ready' policy).

Also getting to start this Monday with the Love Is In The Air event (or what I refer to as the love stinks event).    This is one of the grinds for items that takes time and really can't be done in just a few days.  Especially if you're wanting one of the mounts available.

There really isn't anything new with the event.   Most of it involves finishing a quick quest in your home city,  and another one down in Uldum.  You'll notice that they didn't update the mobs in Uldum so at level 90 you'll be smacking around level 83-84 bad guys.   Unfortunately this also removes a semi decent grinding spot for your creation of Lovely Charms.   There was much fear and trembling in the blogosphere that Disenchanting the necklaces from the event boss would drive down the price of materials.  The powers that be hot fixed this issue so the items aren't disenchantable anymore.

There is a small (and I mean small) possibility that the patch comes out this week  With patch 5.2 all of your valor points get converted to Justice points (and Conquest turn into honor points).   Patch 5.2 introduces a new tier, so no one gets a head start to the new items.  So if the conversion will put you above your maximum justice points (4000) then it will be a good idea to buy something from the current tear to keep from the points converting to gold (never a good option).

With new areas,  new quests,  new raids there will be a huge demand for enhancement items.   We will be taking a look at different areas to be prepared for before the patch hits.   But keep picking up your items you use for your enchants,  patches and saleable items.  Also Leatherworkers and Blacksmiths might want to look to dump some of your crafted PVP inventory since new more powerful PVP patterns will be available with the new patch.

Enjoy your monday.   and as always....

Good Luck and Good Hunting
