Bye Bye Diablo III Auction House

Blizzard announced that they will be completely removing the Auction House after March 18, 2014.  They provided a video to explain this decision and how it will affect the game.

http://youtu.be/ijCgKciMIE4

But this does bring up something interesting in the idea of would they do the same to World of Warcraft?   The Auction House system has been an integral part of MMO's since Final Fantasy XI introduced one of the first active trading systems.  Before then upgrades were either done via trade chat or even sales from online sites such as Ebay.

The removal of an Auction House system will make the next Diablo Expansion that much more interesting in how it upgrades gear.  Modern MMO's such as Marvel Heroes have yet to introduce an auction house and off server pages for trading have flourished.  Pages such as Marko's DiabloIII Gold Guide site are already planning on transferring to off server trade auctions.

So what would happen if Blizzard decided to do the same thing and remove the Auction House from World of Warcraft?   The normal Auction House has always been considered stable, and even the Black Market Auction House has been a popular addition to the Mists of Pandaria Expansion.   The key difference between the World of Warcraft auction house system and the Diablo III auction house system is the Real Money Auction House.  The addition of real money elements into the auction house system was the monkey wrench that brought the concept down.

Where all the money that was on the Warcraft auction house was ethereal in nature,  Diablo III's version encouraged a much higher manipulation into the system.  Players would spend hours farming Epic level gear to sell and rotate through the money making system.   The system became flawed when inflation drove in game gold to become completely worthless.

When the Real Money Auction House was added to Diablo III I was excited with the concept.  The one thing I think they missed was adding a limit to how much could be earned in real money.  There may be few that were able to manipulate the system to their advantage,  but even a few can cause chaos for a semi closed auction environment.   On this and other journals it's been shown many times that a few can control the multitudes when it comes to pricing on gear and popular items.  If someone needs a quick reminder of this go and sell glyphs on your server at 250g and see how fast it drops to 15g per.

This is in no way a condemnation of the players that took advantage of the Diablo III RMAH system.  In fact,I admire their ability to balance the tediousness of playing the game and being shrewd in their monetary mechanics.  It just is a shame that Blizzard has decided to completely throw out the baby with the bathwater instead of looking for a much better solution.

My Favorite Addon

Mommar here.

Over the amount of time during my Warcraft 'career' I've added and deleted a cubic ethereal ton of add-ons. Some performed one specific duty such as keeping track of how many attempts I ran Sekketh Halls to obtain my Raven mount.  Others performed much more complex tasks such as Trade Skill Master.   Each become very important in the overall setup of performing tasks towards gold making.

But one add-on is the most powerful add-on I have.  Without it I would be crippled in my exploring of gold making tasks.  It's taken years and year for me to develop and is so important that I would guard it with my Warcraft life.

It's my Notebook that sits next to my computer (yeah,  I know.  Cheesy).

There are all sorts of note taking tools that can be used as add-ons.    And with more and more powerful computers, it's just as easy to swap between windows to bring up Springpad or notepad or lily pad or whatever you choose to keep notes.  When I first started playing WOW, my computer just barely crawled over the minimum requirements for the game.   My video settings were at the lowest they could be and I was tanking with a 6fps.  You can imagine how my monitor whined at the end of any boss battle that covered the entire screen with flashing lights.   Ultimately I upgraded my computer to a much better setup but I still remained conservative in how I did my note taking.

I used to note everything that I did or bought in Warcraft.   Looked for trends and researched offline and even noted players that I grouped with that didn't fit my view of how to play.   Keeping records for my guild was an extension of this record keeping.   Now that I do not run as much with my guild I do not keep as detailed records as I did from the start.

But what I do still have is copious notes on financial trends and expectations in the market.  It's how my brain organizes information.   Your brain may do something different and that it becomes easier to use much more computer based ways to keep your notes.  The important part of this is that you are looking for trends and keeping track of your decision making.   Some trends repeat itself every season.   Others are one time deals that are here and gone.

“Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it”

This ideal doesn't just apply in real life but also in your Warcraft life.   Your mistakes should not be repeated while your successes should build you to the next step.   The notetaking will allow you to know which is which.

So buy yourself a notebook and a good pen and keep your own personal gold making journal.  You might be surprised just how much you can learn when you put pen to paper.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Patch 5.2 Prep: Will players be returning?

The burnout of Mists of Pandaria hit much quicker than most expected.    Perhaps it was the huge amount of dailies that were seemingly required to keep up with the proverbial Joneses.   Or players running out of options after they had alread leveled one or two toons.     Older guilds seemed to be slowing down or even disappearing off the world stage.

5.2 is shaping up to bring a new spark to play.  With a brand new zone and more story lines those that enjoy reading the story throughout will be whisked back into a game that for many already became stale.

This is where Gold Goblins can look to take advantage again for players returning for another bite of the Mists of Pandaria apple.  Gear will again end up being important to get players raid ready as quick as possible.   And with the announcement that there will not be be the ability to fly in the new zone (everyone remembers Burning Crusade and the Blood Elf zones) it should bring a new burst of excitement for gear and enhancements.

If you haven't already started gathering and saving materials for your enhancement crafts,  now is an excellent time to get started.   From Belt buckles to leg armor to even gems,  looking for deals and ready to flip when the doors open to the new areas will put you on top of the Gold Goblin list.

More info gets reported with the PTRs,  and with sales of Raw gems stumbling now would be a good idea to look to get some farming under your belt.   Maxxing out your Valor Points will help to get you geared up quicker than before.   There hasn't been any announcement on points resetting (generally for the patches they do not reset) so making sure you're staying at the max (3000) and spending them accordingly will keep you in the game.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Preparing For the Future: Alts 101

As Mists of Pandaria matures and we continue on with the storyline.  More and more players will be creating alternate characters from their mains.   A tank main may create a ranged dps class.    A healer may want to try to enjoy relaxing with a melee dps class.

The farther that players get into the raiding depths,  the more apt their guilds will have a need for specific toons.   And this is where your preparation will become important.    Players will need to get their players geared quickly up to raid level standards.  So they will be ready to pay large amounts of gold to get the best gear that gold can buy.

Patch 5.2 is already on the PTRS,   and one of the occurrences that players on the PTRs are noticing that there is a large amount of powerful BOE weapons being dropped.   Those weapons will find themselves quickly on the market as will just as powerful armor.   The key to being on top of this wave of Alternate gearing is to have both BOE crafted gear available as well as the enhancements that are needed for raiding and high level questing.

So to be prepared for this,  investing and farming in raw minerals such as ore and enchanting materials will be very important in the next couple of weeks.   Those that wait til the last minute to start to prepare will end up being in the back of the line,  depending on the ebb and flow of the Auction House.

Plan both your material strategy as well as your gold strategy to be on top.   All materials will become just as valuable in the opening weeks of the 5.2 patch and future patches.   So setting your strategy and goals now will allow you to execute them correctly and effectively.

Keep your eyes on the prize and the prize will be yours

How Not To Make Gold In Warcraft

As I was reading different news related websites I stumbled upon an interesting story.   It seems that
a parent in a foreign country decided that his son had spent enough time playing on Warcraft.  So instead
of being an actual parent and limiting his sons activities.  The parent hired a cyber hit man to grief the sons characters all over Azeroth til they became frustrated and quit.

Admitting to myself that this was both creative and wrong.  It spiked the gold goblin in me to the idea that this idea wasn't the best to earn gold with.  Blizzard has been haphazard with their enforcement of no griefing policies when it comes to stalking players.   Many stories have been passed around about bans for 'griefing' other players by following them and killing them on PVP servers.

When my server was much stronger on world PVP there would be epic battles as groups would raid cities and people would run to the rescue.  Darnassus tended to be the most popular of places to plant players in and cause a ruckus along the server world.   Many cyber enemies were created with this PVP battles and many players became hated enemies along the times.

But I can say that it never crossed my mind to hire people to hunt someone til they became frustrated with the game.   This would be crossing an unwritten etiquette rule of sorts that were created between players.  Now I'm sure that people will read this news entry (found here) but I would hope that players would decide it isn't worth the possible loss of account access and general scorn from the server population.

Everyone wants to make real money from their gaming addiction.  Diablo presented this possibility with the Real Money Auction House.   And there is a black market for players to sell their characters once they are finished with them.   But to me getting paid to hunt and stalk a player til they quit a game just does not feel like the gold goblin way.

Recipe Isolation Sales

Mommar here.

With every new patch new recipes arrive.  Some of them are drops from raid bosses.  Others are purchasable through different means.  New recipes mean new opportunities for profit.

Unfortunately you aren't the only one that looks to get new recipes.   Every player with a profession is looking to get ahead of others in providing items for raiders and players leveling.   The important part of this is how you evaluate a new recipe.

If you were working on your Blacksmithing or Leatherworking profession you knew where to get your PVP blue patterns.  During the cataclysm expansion these were easy money makers.   This occurred because many crafters didn't want to put the money or time into crafting and selling these.   With Mists of Pandaria these PVP patterns have become much more commonplace because they were used to bring the professions up to maximum.   With these items becoming much more common the price was driven down considerably.   The PVP pieces have come to the point that they are much less profitable.

Every so often a new pattern will arrive on the AH.  Your skills in being able to determine whether this will be a profitable pattern becomes that much more in demand.   Selling one or two will very rarely be able to recoup the investment you made in buying the pattern.  But selling 5-6 of the crafted item can easily pay for the pattern and also add a handy profit into your pocket.

When spotting new patterns,   determine just how much in demand that pattern will be on your server.   That should be the main determination of whether you buy the pattern or go ahead and let it pass.  Also don't forget that you can pick up the pattern and just flip it back on the AH for a few more gold.   Go with what your gut and experience tell you to do.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Breaking Through The Wall

Mommar here

About a year into playing wow and learning how to make gold I ran into a wall.   No matter what I sold I couldn't seem to get past the 90k mark.   It was frustrating because my goal of 100k was well in my grasp.

After trying every thing I could,  making adjustments for every sale to make sure that I was getting the maximum profit I stepped back to take a long term look.

Figuring out just how much I was selling and how much I was using for repairs,  inventory and other minor costs I found a leak in my own personal system.   Where I was at 90k in gold,  I was well over 100k in actual goods.

With this knowledge I was able to relax a little bit and continue make gold making processes without the pressure of the goal I had set.   Ultimately I made 100k in gold and did my own personal celebration (naked run through Shattrath.   The key is that I didn't let my personal Gold wall break me.   Instead of climbing and falling continually I went around the wall.  Relieving the pressure I had put on myself to obtain my goal at that point.

Are you stuck behind your own wall of goals.   Do you set your own goals or are you letting your goals cause you frustration and despair?   Goals are there to accomplish,  but not to deflate your enjoyment of Warcraft as a game.   If you are faithful and diligent (quarter word) to how you make gold,  ultimately those goals will become nothing but a speed bump instead of a mountain.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Pay What?

As I was rolling through the Auction House aisles looking for some bargains yesterday I came upon an interesting site.

Someone had posted up a Green Iron Helm for sale.    Nothing fantastic on the piece.  nice leveling helm that can be handy.   I then looked at the price of what they were asking for it.

35,000 g!!!!

After I picked myself off the floor and got done laughing I wanted to figure out exactly why someone would post an item such as this at a super inflated price.   A couple of reasons came to mind:

1.   The seller hoped someone really really really (add a couple of more really) wanted a new hat.

2.   Seller was banking on someone thought it said 35g and bought it (ummm no)

3.   Their pricing addon had a spastic attack and sold them down the river.

4.   Dumb (very rarely will I say that someone is dumb when it comes to listing auctions)

In the Warcraft economy as it is now,  35,000g is a lot of money for any item.   With the changes that Blizzard has added,  gold isn't as free flowing for the average player as it was before.   So pricing an item this high is a fool's run.   This is an extreme case of course.  Pricing your items is a combination of knowledge and feeling for how your economy rolls.   On one server that has many many Warcraft millionaires,  items will be more expensive.   On a new server,  items tend to be on the lesser side because they do not sell as well.

The key is to pay attention to your market and don't just assume that number the addon gives you is the most accurate addon.  An item is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.   Though 35k gold would be nice for about 4 gold worth of materials.   Auction house,  I see a Green Iron Helm flood in your future

Heat Of The Moment

New years baby Mommar here.

As I'm preparing to ring in the new year via wine and friends.  One thought always comes to mind during the holiday season.   Since they have made it illegal to smack my brother around,  guess I will have to discuss the other thoughts.

My brother is a passionate man.  He has many opinions and ticks in his way of living life.  One of the big ones is his hatred for the word 'Irregardless'.   I have seen him blow up when someone uses this word in a normal conversation.  His irritation has even gone to the point of losing business deals because he felt the need to correct the other person.

There comes a point that even if you are right,  you do not have to push that onto someone else.  As a seller the idea is that the customer is always right.  This applies even if you know they are completely wrong.   It's their gold and how they want to spend it is none of your business.   You may hold your ground with your idea of being right,  but taking money out of your pocket because of your wanting to prove to be correct is not the Gold Goblin way.

Keep in mind how you want to be treated when you are misguided.  Do you want someone to pound you into the sand telling you how you're a fool and don't know how to play your class?    They might not know the entire situation.   You may be buying for someone else or another alternate toon of yours.   The same way that you want to be treated is how you should enter a business negotiation with someone else.   Even if they misspell every other word and barely know the English language,  their gold still adds up the same as it's traded to your account.

Do not let your quest for a verbal superiority because you to be the poor man over in the corner.  Technically correct but still having no gold in the bank.

Good Luck and Happy New Year

Five Star Sales

Mommar Here

As we come closer to the new year.   The magic list of changes that we all want to do will start to come together.   Resolutions that slip into wishes that quickly slip into the past as the new year starts to roll along.

But in the next couple of days,  a wise Gold Goblin will look at their sales through the year and give themselves a rating.   Whether it's thumbs up,  toes up,  movie reels or whatever you choose as your method of showing approval.   Which sales were you especially proud of?   Which sales failed miserably and took gold from your pocket?

Learning from your sales opportunities in the past can lead to good sales in the future.   Taking those four and five star sales and seeing where they can even be improved.   Dissecting those one star sales and see just how they can be improved.

There is a well known adage that sales those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.    The same is applicable for your daily,  weekly and your 'home run' sales.   Taking a look at how your sales progressed can lead to the path of even better opportunities in the next year.

What sales are you especially proud of?   What sales are you hiding under the rug and denying they ever happened?

Good Luck and Good Hunting

The Gauntlet Thrown Down

So a friend of the journal threw a challenge my direction that got my egg-nog addled brain thinking.

Their basic statement was how to make gold.   This would seem like an easy question since it's the entire basis of this blog.   But a few caveats were thrown into the soup for spice.

-  No farming
-  Limited Auction House Work (i.e.  none)
-  No Crafting

Okay,  so this wasn't as easy as I had hoped.   But once the Gold Goblin brains at JMTC started rolling a couple of out of the box thoughts came to mind.

1.   PVP = Honor points to Justice Points

Yes,   there is still PVP though on many servers it seems to have lost some of it's luster.   Running PVP maps for Honor Points, then converting them to Justice points at your home city vendors is still available. In that same area are Cataclysm materials that can be purchased from vendors.   Not a ton of gold,  but it follows the pattern and the rules set down to make gold.

2..  Escort Service

Okay,   Now that I have your attention.   This escort service isn't about scantily clad men and women.  It is built around getting players to where they want to go.   Mages have a distinct advantage in this realm with their built in portal techniques.   During holidays many players still don't have flying mounts and want to be taken to different sections to obtain items (Think Hallow's Even event).   Nothing wrong with charging a few gold for your time and effort

3.  Contests and trivia games

On many servers there are still games of chance and games of trivia that people will play in trade chat.   It is a little more chancy since Blizzard has cracked down on just what game can be played.  And the first time that something goes wrong your reputation will be gone for a few extra gold.

4.  Dancing on the Mailbox

Yes Virginia,  there is still dancing in Orgrimmar.   Next time you see someone shaking what the Blizzard programmers gave them,  throw a few copper their direction.   It might just be an enterprising Gold Goblin looking for a good time.  (wow,  this is just getting dirtier and dirtier as we go).

5.   Begging

This once speaks for itself.   Not the most popular of professions.  But there is almost always one or two people on the server that will beg for gold in the main cities.   A sign saying 'will raid for food' always brings in the gold.

Some of these were tongue in cheek,  others were an attempt to get you to think outside the box.   The key is that there are many ways to obtain gold in Warcraft.  Some are more successful than others.   Keeping your mind fresh and looking at new ways might bring a little laugh,  and some extra coin into your pocket.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Post Holiday Toys

Mommar Here.

Hopefully your post holiday hangover is subsiding.   And your holiday food coma has allowed you to make your way back into Azeroth to grab your presents.

One of the biggest gifts this year was tablets.  Both Apple and Android models were on the top of many gamers lists.   Some of the more powerful tablets can even play wow with a combination of software and connections (if you want more information do a good search for 'Playing wow on a tablet'.

But one item that many players will overlook is the Mobile Armory app.   Available for both the Apple and Android operating system this gives you the opportunity to be looking for deals on the Warcraft Auction House while your watching TV or on the go.

A few things to keep in mind.  If you have a physical authenticator like I do,  you will need to have that with you to be able to purchase items using the Armory app.   This might be a good time to switch to the App version of the authenticator  (a detailed step by step is available on the Battle.net FAQ).

The Battle net app is one of many tools that can be added to your toolbox to add profit into your column.  And help you make it through the post holiday blues as we look to ring in a new year.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Tis The Season

Tomorrow is the big day.  The big red fat guy shows up to give presents to all of the good gold goblin boys and girls.

But you also can be a Santa Claus yourself.    Many people will be receiving the Mists of Pandaria expansion as Christmas gifts.   With the discount that Blizzard and other online markets are offering for the entire Warcraft experience there will be brand new players into the game.

With brand new players arrives brand new possibilities for sales.  And opportunities to be Goblin ambassadors.  Keeping and eye on the Auction house for items to flip on the Auction house (blue items are especially good at being flipped for a quick profit.  As well as foodstuffs and potions) will give you a happy feeling in your Warcraft pocket book.

As you're sharing adding profit to your pocket book,  add a little spice in life.  If you see someone new struggling,  or having inferior equipment.   Throw them a new weapon that you can craft.   Give them the experience in Warcraft that not everyone is a scrooge.   You might just be adding to a great day for someone  in their first experience in Warcraft.

If you end up drinking a little too much egg nog for tonight.   There is always dancing on the mailboxes for tips in your hottest transmog wear.   I will be in Orgrimmar dancing the night away.

Have a safe and happy Christmas.

Mommar here.

One of the misnomers of being a Gold Goblin is that you have to be great at every facet of making gold.  Somehow the belief has creeped in that you must be top in knowing what to craft,  high on flipping for profit. A master at farming materials to make gold and also jump on every sale that occurs.

Practically speaking this just isn't possible.  You can be good at multiple disciplines when it comes to making gold in Warcraft.  But to expect to be the best at everything will drive you completely insane.   As you continue on in your gold making career,  you will develop your strengths.   Those areas that you excel in due to server condition,  time management and even enjoyment of an aspect of making gold.   These strengths should be the base of your operations and your go to skill when it comes to making gold in the Warcraft environment.

Each discipline comes with its own hills and valleys.  But that base you create for your gold making empire will always be there.  Once that base of operation is successful you can branch out to become proficient and even great in different areas.    Creation of your gold making pyramid will allow your gold making dreams to become reality.

As you enter this weekend sales cycle,  build on your strengths.   The other aspects will follow suit and give you extra time to become proficient in other areas of the gold making experience.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

The Go To Gold Goblin???

Mommar here.

Every so often I get myself into trouble when it comes to my guild.   No,  I don't run out yelling Mommar jenkins at the start of a raid (I've done it once.   5 minutes of laughter followed as we wiped horribly).

What does occur is the fact that as a guild we share a lot of ideas on gold making.  I was not the first in my guild to make a considered effort to make a cubic butt-ton of gold.   There were those that had decent profits even at the beginning of Vanilla Warcraft.    The entire guild has a good amount of Gold Goblins sitting around playing the game as well as cashing in on their crafting and financial savvy.

What can get me into trouble is that a few of my guild mates know i write a blog on Warcraft gold making.  In their helpful ways they will suggest from time to time ideas on what I should write about.   Many times they are article ideas that are in the planning stages or being researched (yes,  I actually do a little research from time to time).   Other times they are little jabs at what I'm writing about.   Taking these jabs in stride and denying the requests for loans from guild mates does make Warcraft life a little bit more exciting.

So the question is have you presented yourself as being the go to goblin for your guild?   It's easy to drop a few bucks in guild mates hands to buy something they want.    But showing them some of your ideas you have learned.   Getting them into the gravy train you have built for your own crafting and flipping ideas can endear yourself to them faster than just handing over the goods and saying here you go.

There is a saying that take a man to fish and they will eat for a day,  but teach them to fish and they will eat for the rest of their life.  And in today's Warcraft economy,   a player without the means or methods to make their own gold is at a distinct disadvantage to the other players on a server.
