Many long-time readers here are at the point in their gold progression where they can focus on lucrative, high-payoff gold making ventures like the recent stockpiling and selling of goods for 4.3. But what if you're just starting off making gold? Either you're too low level to max professions or you don't have much capital to invest?
Well, the new Darkmoon Faire has some options for you! One of the new features is the weekly profession quest. I took my main character to the Faire and figured I'd do the profession quests just to do them. I quickly found some roadblocks to quick completion: I had to leave the Faire and return to Stormwind to purchase supplies.
So this led me to thinking, why not sit and sell the reagents needed for the quests? I gladly would have overpaid for them in order to save the trip back to a city. Not all the professions need items from a town, but here are the ones that do:
Tailoring
1 Coarse Thread, 1 Red Dye, 1 Blue Dye, sold by the tailoring supply vendors. Ask a guard for tor the location of the Tailor trainer in any capital if you aren't sure where to go. The base cost before discounts is 10 copper for the thread and 50 copper for each dye, or 1 silver, 10 copper for the group.
Inscription
5 Light Parchment, sold by the Inscription supply vendors. Ask a guard for tor the location of the Inscription trainer in any capital if you aren't sure where to go. The base cost before discounts is 15 copper per sheet, or 75 copper for the group.
Cooking
5 Simple Flour, sold by the Cooking supply vendors. Ask a guard for tor the location of the Cooking trainer in any capital if you aren't sure where to go. The base cost before discounts is 25 copper per flour, or 1 silver, 25 copper for the group.
Leatherworking
10 Shiny Bauble, 5 Coarse Thread, 5 Blue Dye. See Tailoring, above, for information on the Coarse Thread and Blue Dye. Shiny Baubles are available from fishing supply vendors. There's actually a fishing vendor on Darkmoon Island that sells these, but some people might not bother looking. If you skip the Baubles, you'll need 3 silver for the thread and dye. If you purchase some Baubles to save your customers the hassle, you'll need another 5 silver, or 8 silver total.
Alchemy
5 Moonberry Juice, sold by Innkeepers. Stop by your favorite inn to get some. The base cost before discounts is 20 silver each, or 1 gold for the group.
Once you have the materials, park yourself at the faire and advertise in General Chat (/1 will start typing in general chat) that you have materials for these 5 professions. When I was playing around with it, I found it most helpful to play off the convenience factor, and generally sold supply packs for 5 gold across the board. At worst, that's still 4 gold in profit for each pack.
I didn't stay long, because I had other things to do that were more profitable, but if you don't have the capital or professions to do those other things, this is a great start. One particularly useful message I was barking was: "Tailoring, Inscription, Cooking, Leatherworking and Alchemy quest items for sale! Turn 5 gold into 16, get 4 tickets and 5 free skill points in your profession!"
Don't underestimate how much gold people are willing to spend to avoid the hassle of gathering these materials themselves. You still have a couple days to give it a try, but chances are most of the player base that is going to do the quests are already through them. But keep this in mind for the next Darkmoon Faire as a way to make some start-up capital!
We've all been there, started out as noobs and saw that epicly geared guy in Ironforge on his awesome and cool mount ( Magical Rooster :P ). We've all drooled and said I want to be just like him.. rich and have all the gold in World of Warcraft... well.... once I level up to level 85.
Leveling in a key factor when you're trying to make gold. Not only does it directly affect how much gold you can earn earn per hour, but it also allows you to give yourself a nice little "head start" from all of the questing and grinding that you'll do trying to reach that awesome Level 85.
If you're a low level and you're reading all of these gold tips, stop. Seriously, stop reading and go level. While leveling you'll earn at least 10,000g from 1-85. I know I personally made 5,500g just from leveling my shaman from 80-85. Quest gold is simply great if you have little to no gold in your pocket. Leveling is a great way to get yourself off your feet. Most of your income will begin rolling in at 70, from 70-80 expect to make anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000g. If you're a disenchanter, disenchant the greens and list them at the auction house, Wrath of the Lich King enchanting materials have sky rocketed, you'll make a killing by disenchanting your greens, trust me
If you make gold at low levels what are you going to spend it on? Epic flying..? Well that requires level 68. What about a level 85 epic? Oh.. that requires level 85.. darn. If you're going to be serious about making gold I suggest you have at least one character at 85. That way you'll have something to spend your gold on, rather than drooling over 310% flying mount speed.
What I'm really trying to say is, go level. There is simply no reason not to. You'll only benefit yourself by doing so. To the gold guru's: Go level. That's right, not only will questing make you gold but you'll also have access to two more profession slots that you did not have. The more professions the more you can diversify your strategies and make even more gold than you are right now.
World of Warcraft blogs have been coming out of the ground lately, so I thought that I'd take the time and let you guys know about some of them, there seems to be a lot of them, but hey more information can't hurt can it?
The Warcraft Corner
A brand new blog, with a good layout, it seems Smudger is doing pretty good with the site, I like it very much. I recently just read his post about skinning the crocs in tol borad, I found it very good information and you guys should check it out, as the old farming spot that I posted in got nerfed.
Keep posting, I hope to see some good information in the coming weeks, Smudger.
The Tipped Copper
Another up and comign wow blog that started about a month back, I actually know the guy who posts here, his name is Xeroaze and he plays on my server :P Any who, he's been posting some good information over at his blog, I found some of it to be quite interesting, he just recently re-designed his site and made it more apealing than it already was.
I found his post on the JMTC carnival ( which didn't make it in the carnival, sorry! ) to be very good, he outlines the ways he's currently making gold. There are some great ideas in there, I suggest you go read it :)
Best of luck with your blog, Xeroaze, I hope you keep posting and keep the good work up.
ALTOs Gold"ish" Advice
This blog has been up for about three months now, so it's not quite as new as the others, but that's good. Alto has recently been making excellent posts that are informative, and detailed, I found his post about turning in dream shards to be an excellent post. It outlines how you can buy cheap dream shards, and sell the wrath of the lich king enchants to levelers, and they have a nice markup due to the low competition.
There is some great information to be found at this blog, I looked through his archives and saw a couple posts that popped out of the screen, they screamed for my eyes to read. Keep up the good work Altolycus, hope to see more great information to come out of you!
I recently started a little project of my own. I decided to level a priest from 1-15 and see how much gold I could acquire. I only paid for 2 Deadmines runs, which costed me 20g total, and everything else was quested. Most, if not all of the questing was done in Westfall, as this is an awesome place to earn gold & level at the same time. By level 15 I had 187g in my bags, more than enough to suffice at level 15. Do keep in mind I did not use any professions while leveling, if I would of had , I would of made double the gold.
What Items Sold Best & Why
- Wool Cloth & Linen Cloth, both of these cloths were one of my biggest source of income. Wool cloth goes for 6-7g per stack, I usually grabbed about 5-6 stacks per deadmines run.
- "Of The Monkey" Gear, another great seller. Twinks are always looking for this type of gear, and they always have a high mark up.
- Low Level Potions, I sold several for a couple gold pieces, almost everyone wants the low level health potions as they are always handy.
- Boar Snouts, Flask of Oil, Okra, & Stringy Vulture Meat. These Items are used for a quest in Westfall. Not everyone has the patience to do quests that require things to drop, so they run to the auction house to see if there are any available.
- Moss Agates, these are used for Jewelcrafting, they have a high mark up value due to how rare they can be.
- Small Eggs, & Clam Meat. Both of these are low level cooking materials, they have a high mark up value. Easily farmed in Westfall.

I remember the first time I entered Orgrimmar on my warrior. All I could think was wow... this place is huge, look at all the buildings and people! As a new player I focused on getting my quests done, exploring the city and then moved on to other areas to keep leveling. I missed out on major gold making opportunities I wish I'd known about back then.
Example video from my youtube channel.
How to Make Lowbie Gold
First off, sell any meats you collected while leveling up to this point on the auction house. Outside Durotar were lots of boars which I had killed for a quest and then just vendored the meat. What a mistake! Those 5 boar meats could have netted me 5-10 gold on the auction house. Second, while moving through the city I never even thought of clicking on the enchanter trainer, and if I had bothered to do so I probably would have seen some strange dust and lesser magic essences for super cheap, not to mention a handful of limited supply recipes. Had I bought these items and resold them on the auction house I would have netted an easy 3 gold for the dusts/essences and up to 20 gold each for the recipes. If I was feeling really adventurous I could have also bought a few copper rods and posted them for those too lazy to run to their enchanter trainer. Finally, there was a troll walking around with snakes trailing him of various colors. Buying these and reselling them for a few gold each would have easily pushed me over 15 gold on my first character without even breaking a sweat, probably even 35-50 gold actually. Maybe then I would have been able to buy some nice gear and saved some time leveling.
For the Comments
There are plenty of ways to use low level materials and vendor items to make gold in major cities the first time you enter them, do you have any other tips you'd like to share? Also try this strategy and tell me how it goes for you. It takes minutes to yield quite a bit of gold for a lower level character.
Note: I ran this experiment on seven servers where I got some money on a new character and ran them to major cities (didn't have the meats and just purchased items if they were available at the time I arrived) and the results were 17 gold, 9.5 gold, 9.4 gold, 26 gold, 114 gold (someone desperate bought both my enchanting recipes for over 45 gold each), 11 gold and 8 gold after waiting a few hours to see what had sold. Not too bad if you ask me and I didn't wait for everything to sell!
