1k gold by level 10

As I was walking through Ogrimmar finishing up on auction house chores a discussion came up on trade chat.  Someone had made a claim that they had hit 1000g by level 10.

Having told the story previously about my first toon, scraping for every copper and silver I could see how those that were not familiar with gold making would be skeptical.  The average player still believes that the only way to make gold is to quest,  finish dailies and sell the occasional blue item on the AH.  Being unfamiliar with the tactics of a gold goblin limits their funds to a minimum.

After about 5 minutes of discussion including a couple of 'liar liar pants on fire' comments I decided to walk away to finish up my chores.  This may seem a little selfish because I could have easily popped off a few ideas on how they made their 1000g.  But the proverbial pearls before swine would have existed.

So how did the guy make 1000g in his first 10 levels?   Not having exactly how the blueprint went for them I can only speculate on what occurred:

1.  Sold everything on the AH.

There is still a large market for low level materials.  Especially copper/tin ore and Peacebloom to multiple professions.  This became more difficult since you obtain XP for each item that you pick/mine.

2.  Green/Blue items dropped and were sold

Players still buy low level items for transmog purposes.  Also for leveling of alt toons.

3.  The player started flipping items on the Auction House

It would not be that difficult once a player reaches a few gold in their pocket to start reinvesting these into the Auction House.  A couple of flips can get them to 100g pretty quickly.  After 100g you can just imagine 1000g is right over the horizon.

These are just a few of the ideas that came to mind on how they hit 1000g before level 10.  There are many more farming spots for mobs that could be killed quickly and looted.  So the next time someone says 'that isn't possible' take a few steps back and imagine whether you can do it.  Think of it as a puzzle that maybe only you know the answer.

Never To Early To Reset

As the newness of Patch 5.4 starts to wear off I have decided to take a look at the future of Mommar Enterprises.

Currently my line up includes a Leather worker,  a Blacksmith,  A Tailor,  An Enchanter,  an Alchemist (Transmute specialist)  Two Herbalist,  Two Miners and Two Jewel Crafters.  My scribe and a partridge in a pair tree round out the crew.  This has been my lineup sans the addition of the new Jewelcrafter.   Two of these are still leveling up so they haven't reached max level,  the rest are already maxed with the vast majority of recipes available.

We already have a good idea that the new system to obtain recipes (through crafting discoveries as well as high end rep recipes) will be used in the new expansion.  This means that many of the crafters will not just be able to sit at a hometown to collect all of the new expansion recipes.  The only crafter that was able to do this was the scribe.   The rest required to hit either revered or exalted with specific reputation vendors to obtain the high end patterns.

The debate in my mind is if I should look to double up any of my professions or to continue as is.  With Leather working and Blacksmithing the introduction of daily transmutes of their own opened up a huge market in doubling up on the profession.  The Lightning Steel Ingot and Balanced Trillium Ingot opened up Blacksmithing to be really dependent on getting these items as quick as possible.  Leather working with the Hardened Magnificent Hide is in the same situation.   The odds are something similar will be introduced in the later patches of the next expansion.

Engineering,  having three of them with the company, will always be considered the red headed step child of money making. The original Ghost Iron Dragonling became a good seller up til the Timeless Isle patch.  Pets also evened out the sales possibilities with Engineering but it still sits a long way from being king of the proverbial sales mountain.

Doubling up on professions does allow a player to get two times the access to many of the patterns.  This especially applies to the daily transmutes and discovery recipes.  The biggest addage of making gold is to be the first to get something onto the market.  This allows you to set the price and make a very heft quick profit while others have to wait til the manufacture item becomes available for themselves.

So in the next few weeks I will be deciding if I need to double up on professions or not.  Once more information with the next expansion becomes available after Blizzcon I will be able to make a much more informed decision.

What changes do you see yourself making with the next expansion?   What professions do you see yourself needing to double up on?

Patch 5.3: Bring Out Your Miners

Mommar here.

So patch 5.3 is just over the horizon.   It wasn't that long since we said the same thing about patch 5.2 and even rewinding to the introduction of Mists of Pandaria.

With MOP the powers that be are shrinking the difficulty of leveling new professions.   With the changes in Blacksmithing,  old world materials were no longer needed to obtain maximum level.  I would expect the same to occur over all of the professions at some point in the future.

Patch 5.3 also introduces this same change to the mining profession.  No longer will it be necessary to go to old world areas to level mining.   This is a great idea for players who want to change from a crafting profession to a gathering profession.   The caveat with this is that most players already carry a farming character on their roster.   And having two maximum level farming characters tends to be inefficient.

If you looked at this change in the mining profession casually it would almost be assumed that this would drive the cost of ore down.  The idea being everyone grabbing their favorite toon,  changing their profession to mining and picking the world apart.   Again the odds of this are slim because only a few do not carry a mining character already.  With little or no additional ore being placed in the Auction House,  prices won't raise or lower that much.

But for players that don't already have a miner on their roster,  this is a great opportunity to get one into the action.   Where I'm not a huge fan of farming for materials,  there is a benefit of taking the time and farming both minerals and skins.   Combine this with a Potion of Luck it's not unheard of to rack up 250-500g per hour for just the cost of your time.

All of this is based on your play style and what you enjoy doing.   Some players enjoy just 'vegging' out and mining/skinning for profit.  There is nothing wrong with this,  and this profession change can give players who have abandoned the mining profession to return to the fold and gather some rock.

Just leave a little out there for me.   I'm bringing my army of new miners.

Must Have Farming Equipment

There are many things that go into the needs for a farmer.   From having the time and the areas that are good to farm,  having the right equipment can give you an advantage over others.

One of these is from the engineering school of professions,  the Mist Piercing Goggles.   These goggles can sit in your inventory and increase your ability to find nodes for both mining and herbs.  For engineers this is a nice money maker since the item is BOE and can have the bottleneck cost of the two Spirits of Harmony required to craft.

Blizzard changed the way that farmers had to equip themselves.  Giving bonuses to the tools needed instead of making them required tools.    Mining Pick and Skinning Knives are still valuable with their +10 bonuses to the skill levels.   These bonuses allow players to get to higher level herbs and mining nodes faster.

With Mists of Pandaria flying not available til 90,  taking advantage of the territory covered with land mounts become that much more important.   Seeing nodes and digging spots for mining and herbalism becomes just as important as getting there quickly.   Where many of the quests in the opening portion of Pandaria quest lines occur around rivers and mountain areas,  the more nodes that become available for picking and mining the better profit margins will become.

As Mists of Pandaria continues,  and high level crafting begins to kick into high gear.   Materials will become more in demand and farmers can lead the way to easy gold.   Just make sure that the items in your bag present you in the best situation to ride the crest of goblin gold making.

Easy Money From Skinning in MOP

Wild Bill Mommar Here.

The cardinal rule of being a gold goblin is that everything sells.   This  is the basis of what many others and I have created our fortunes upon.   Never has this been as obvious as in the opening zones of Mists of Pandaria.

Last night I started my number one farmer to work.   She is a Skinner/Miner with decent gear,  so I had no problem blowing through most of the mobs in the area.   The part that I was noticing was that in the opening area just outside the temple:

Here was a plethora of mobs to kill and skin.  Many of the Sha-Infested Prowlers in this area have a heavy repop rate.   Being a member of a level 25 guild and the Bountiful Bags Perk I ended up with about 15 stacks of Sha-Touched Leather in my bags for less than an hours worth of work.

One of the reasons this area is very profitable for skinners is that many players don't have the skinning ability so they will end up leaving unskinned mobs in this area.   There was some bad with the good in this area.   It ended up where many of the corpses were unable to be skinned because players did not loot after they had been killed.

Also as your skinning in this (and other areas) there is the opportunity for Plump Intestines to drop.  These seem to contain bonus coins from 1-2g (similar to the Strange Bloated Stomach that was skinned in Twilight Highlands.).

As a skinner spending some time in these small profitable areas for materials can be beneficial.  Later on there will be less need to farm the Mists of Pandaria version of scraps for full pieces of leather.  But with the market being hungry for anything necessary to level professions,  getting these onto the market can be very profitable.

Good Luck and Good Skinning (and loot your mobs)

No realm first achievement for you

Realm first profession is one of the most popular and difficult achievements to obtain at the start of an expansion.   Gathering professions tend to be difficult but obtainable.   They are based on just how quick you can get to a farming ground for that specific material,  pick/mine/skin and hope that noone was faster than you.

The crafting professions tend to be the ones that gain the most notoriety.     Be realm first on your server and your escapades will be spoken for at least the first two days of an expansion.

So today,  I offer you 8 tips on how to give yourself a fighting chance to get a realm first in a crafting professions.

1.   Have your professions at maximum already

If your having to level your professions after the opening of the Pandaria gates,  then your digging yourself out of a hole already.   Start the race at the same place as everyone else.

2.   Have enough materials to do the first crafting points with the older material.

Many of the epic items still are in the red or yellow for gaining points.   when the patch first goes live
craft as many of these epic items as you can.   Once the item goes green,  then move onto the next phase (this is more due to time constraints.  You want every craft to try to count towards a point.  A green crafting item will take two or three.

3.   Have some type of powerleveling guide for MOP for the fastest way to 600

This one will be important.  You will want to use the least amount of materials to obtain the most
points.   So knowing which ones will give you the quickest jumps in levels will be important.

4.  Be in a level 14 guild for the Guild Perk Working Overtime

10% added chance for crafting points.   Many players are going to have this already for their crafting toons.  Those players that are lacking this for their guild will be at a disadvantage.   The 10% will effect the chance of a yellow or green level crafting item ticking off another point in profession advancement.  Level 14 guilds tend to be active so if your guild has been raiding or has multiple questing members,  the odds are your already at this level or very close.

5.  Bring gold

There is no two ways around it.  This is going to cost you gold to get to be a realm first in a crafting profession.   It would be difficult if not near impossible to gather your own materials to craft up to the maximum of a profession.   An option to gather your own would be if you can get your guild behind one person to obtain the realm first.  Or of course if your guild is easily bribed (my guild isn't).   Either way it's going to put a dent into your gold reserves.

6.  Be ready to go when the doors to Pandaria open.    This includes standing next what you need for your profession (blacksmithing next to an anvil/forge,  leatherworkers next to their vendor).   Your goal is to spend all your time crafting and none of your time running around looking for what you need.

7.  Have the crafting dailies for fishing/jewelcrafting/inscriptionist daily done and ready to turn in.

This will gain 1 more point towards your profession.  jewelcrafting dailies will give you two points.
So the day before the patch opens up,  finish up your daily but do not turn it in.   Just park your
toon in front of the turn in  (for inscriptionist that will turn in the Forged Documents quest for their point).

8.  Be prepared if the Darkmoon Faire is active

It's possible that the Darkmoon Faire will be active during the opening of Pandaria.   The odds are slim it will,  but be prepared if it is.   Have your materials for your DM monthly profession quest ready to go and turn in.  We will know more about this as the date for Mists of Pandaria comes closer.

Bonus Tips for Gathering Realm First

  • Purchase a Gnomish Army Knife before MOP.   These are going to give you a +10 to your gathering ability for herbalism, mining and skinning.   This will not give you points towards your achievement.  But it will prevent you from running into (skill not high enough) problems as you advance into different areas.

  • Have enchanted gloves based on your professions.

  • Fishing for a realm first achievement will want to have both one of the highest +point level rods in the game (Arcanite Fishing Rod or Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Rod).   even if you only have a plus 5 Strong Fishing Pole you will have an easier time.   Remember again the +bonuses do not count towards your points.  The points just make it a higher possibility to catch in different areas.

What other suggestions do you think that a realm first achiever should know?

Get thee to an engineer

One of the first items I always add to a new toon is the [Gnomish Army Knife].   Having before to drag one or two different tools to be able to do mining, skinning or grass picking tasks.  It's a farmer's best friend.

But MOP brings a nice little addition to the party.   Carry this item around on your farmer and you will get a +10 to the gathering professions.  That might not seem like much,  but combine that with the +5 gloves enchant for any of the professions ([Enchant Gloves -Advanced Mining][Enchant Gloves - Advanced herbalism][Enchant Gloves - Skinning].   This enchant/item combination adds a healthy +15 to your abilities.  Leapfrogging you over many of the dead zone areas that happen when leveling a gathering profession.

For engineers,  this is going to be a nice little niche goldmine to add to the small amount of items that sell continually.   Grab some Saronite,  a pick, a hammer and a skinning knife and make some quick profit from the start.

It is item changes like this that will drive the price of Saronite ore and bars higher than expected.  Starting to buy cheap,  or farming them in Wintergrasp will put you ahead of the demand to come.

The ore report - Dig dig dig

As your setting up your professions and sales goals for Mists of Pandaria,   the biggest decision will be just how much ore and what kinds to have.

If you have the benefit of seemingly unlimited capital,  then you can cover your bases by carrying all of the different ores,  stocking them into different places for use or resell.

But many are looking at how much to invest,   how much to place in each type to get the most profit.   Lets walk through all of the different ores,  and get a decent idea of just what will be impacted.

Copper ore

This is the starting point for all of the professions that use ore and bars to level (blacksmithing,  jewelcrafting,  engineering).   Also it will be the easiest to find on the AH,  so your investment level should be low if any saved back

Investment grade D-

Tin Ore

Not particularly useful for leveling any of the major professions.  It is used in some crafting items for lower level gear so may be useful for a minimum investment.

Investment Grade D

Silver Ore

Found on the spawn points of Tin Ore.   This helps with the leveling grind for multiple professions.   With it's relative rarity to the other ore spawn points,  it goes a long way for reselling on the AH.

Investment Grade C-

Iron Ore

This is where you can start with collection of materials for resell.   Iron Ore is still a common ore,  but is useful for all three professions.  And many of the leveling miners will blow through the nodes for iron ore and then not collect any more.   Blacksmithing sees heavy use for it's leveling by using Iron Ore

Investment Grade B-

Gold Ore

Another stop gap for investment for many of the professions.  Jewelcrafting uses this material for it's leveling around the 135-160 level.   Blacksmithing has the Golden Scale set in the 175 range.  Even Tailoring uses this for crafting the Brightcloth set.   It is more rare than it's counterpart spawn points of iron.   Keep a steady supply of this on the AH for larger profits

Investment Grade B

Mithril Ore

This will be a large money maker combined with truesilver and thorium.  Most people race to try to get through the leveling process,  and when leveling professions won't take the time to stock up.  Plus these metals are going for low amounts on the AH.   Purchase multiple quantities of these for reselling and restocking.

Truesilver Ore

The rare node area of mithril,   is used as a stop gap for all of the major professions around the 230 range for leveling.  Blacksmithing relies heavy on this for leveling.  Jewelcrafting also have high needs for this
to get through the 230-240 crafting gap.  Will be in High demand

Investment Grade B

Thorium Ore

Another one that will end up being useful and in demand.   Many farming cartels are starting to stockpile this which might drive down the prices and useful sales.  Keep an eye on your Ah health and if needed,  save for later sales in the cycle

Investment Grade B-

Fel Iron Ore

The starting ore found in Burning Crusade.   Blacksmithing and Jewelcrafting rely heavy on it for leveling.   But it also is relatively easy to find nodes all around the Burning Crusade leveling spots.  Be cautious with the amount you sell,  but it will sell at a tidy profit,  if not immediately after a time.

Investment Grade B-

Adamantite Ore

Another rare spawn found in Burning Crusades.  Most miners are not going to be stockpiling this,  hoping to get more thorium/Mithril ore.   Keep a healthy supply of this for trading and selling in your stockpiles.   Multiple professions use this to level up to the 350+ level before getting into the Cataclysm leveling professions.

Investment Grade B-

Cobalt Ore

Used again by multiple professions.  This is going to be the start of a three prong attack for investing.  It's not found continually for mining in the Wrath of the Lich king areas,  heavily used for professions all the way up to 450,  and also won't be mined as often by those leveling through it's normal spawn areas.   Keeping a relatively decent supply of this through Mists of Pandaria should put you ahead of the sales curve.

Investment Grade C+

Saronite Ore

Saronite ends up being difficult to gauge for it's future investment.  Most of the mining occurs for this in the Wintergrasp PVP area.   And is used by multiple professions as well.  Jewelcrafters will use multiple amounts to generate common and medium gems cheaply and efficiently for the daily jewelcrafting items.   Also as Blacksmith and engineering use this for leveling up to the 425 area.   Keeping a very healthy supply of this ore will keep your percentages high in the market.   Just watch out for bots that can drive the prices down,  Wintergrasp is heavily trafficked for mining bots and can sink an Ore economy very quickly.

Investment Grade B+

Titanium

If your farming Saronite ore in Wintergrasp or other areas,   these will spawn occasionally.   But the demand for the ore/bars other than for a few recipes (Mechano-Hog) requiring a large amount for titansteel crafting,  otherwise just keep a good eye for deals as they pop up for people dumping inventory or mistake of pricing.
If your server is in high demand for the Titansteel then keep a good supply may give you rewards.   Otherwise you have other places to invest your goblin gold at.

Investment Grade C-

Obsidium Ore

The starting mining ore found in Cataclysm.  This has already dropped in price significantly on multiple auction houses.   Mining bots are crashing the investment worthy,  and many of the Jewelcrafters that were performing the obsidium/elementium shuffle have stopped generating the use of the ore to begin stockpiling.  Necessary for almost all of the major professions to level,  it will generate gold when sold,  easily 2 to 3 times as much if you buy low and sell high at peak demand.

Investment Grade B-

Elementium Ore

Most of the powerleveling guides have elementium ore topping off the 425-435 range very quickly.   Needing a large amount of crafting and volatiles to finish off pre Mist of Pandaria leveling.   Undoubtedly there will be demand,  though the current glut of unsold ore will effect pricing.   A wait and see attitude can be used to make sure that you are a heavy supplier for the ore/bars while others are caught with their ore down.

Pyrite Ore

The red headed stepchild of mining.   Investing now in it will lose you money each and every time.   With no epics generated and only a few receipes using the bar form (Truegold from alchemists,  Epic weapon and armor patterns from both leatherworking and blacksmithing).  Investing in Pyrite is truly a fools gold errand.   Keep a few stacks in your inventory just in case it's useful.  But unless you get a sweetheart of a deal,  avoid investing this like the plague.

Investment Grade  D (and that's being generous).

For my investment strategies when the auction house melee hits,  I'm looking at any of the investment grades that are higher than C's to be heavily invested in,   anything lower I will have some moderate stacks available but not sink a large amount of gold into it.   Also a caveat is if a great deal arrives to jump on.   Whether it's long term or short term,  ore will sell or be used.

Bar forms for investment will always trump leaving an item in ore form.   But if you leave the ore in it's natural form you are given more flexibility when investing and selling.

Just keep an eye on the market,  and try to catch the fluctuations as auction house sales continue.   Be ready to drop items hard and heavy during the weekends and when new patches are released.  Being the first on the market will spur sales growth.

Good luck and good hunting

Mists of Pandaria Preparation: Professions (Part 1)

In the World of Warcraft, fortunes are made on patches and new expansions. Each new expansion and patch brings the opportunity for you to get gold-capped. Will you be the next in Mists of Pandaria? Now is the time to prepare! This series is about preparing for the next great gold rush in WoW: Mists of Pandaria!

Choosing Your Professions
If you're starting with a blank slate, some combinations of professions are better than others streamlining your gold-making business. Which professions should you choose? Which professions should be your highest priority if you can't get them all? Based on Cataclysm and Wrath of the Lich King, and what we know right now about Mists of Pandaria, here are some things to consider when choosing your professions...

The Long-Haul Professions
These professions will be the mainstays of the expansion. These will be some of your strongest gold-makers in the early stages of the expansion, but will also remain very profitable throughout.

Jewelcrafting
Nearly every gear upgrade once you hit heroic dungeons will contain sockets that need to be filled by your gems. I expect dungeons to be shorter in length, more in the style of Wrath of the Lich King based on the return to that formula late in Cataclysm. Faster, smoother gear upgrade cycles will result in steady business.

There will be some sort of shuffle for you to participate in, which leads to lots of gems for selling in addition to other revenue streams. Leveling your Jewelcrafter from the Auction House will be expensive in the early days, but the key will be getting to the Jewelcrafting Daily Quest on day one to start collecting tokens. Every day you miss the quest, you'll fall behind for grabbing patterns. If Mists is released in the first (or last) week of the month, you might be able to use the Darkmoon Faire profession quest to skip a particularly troublesome leveling block (like the Hessonite/Nightstone or Shadowspirit Diamond bottlenecks in Cataclysm).

You'll also be able to sell blue rings/necks to characters in the early months of the expansion, with profits dropping as time goes by and the rings become outdated.

Recommendation: Two JCs will serve you well in the opening days, but the benefit will tail off with time as you get all the best patterns. If you've got slots to spare and money to risk, you might give it a try. Most people will want to stick with just one JC.

Enchanting
Another mainstay for this expansion will be enchanting. The same dungeon difficulty change theorized above will result in more enchants being needed more consistently throughout the expansion's life cycle. The first level of enchants will be popular early on because of high crystal prices. I don't expect the difference to be as severe as Cataclysm because Looking For Raid will likely introduce epic gear that could end up getting disenchanted once that gear is replaced in the normal version of the raids. There will still be an extended period of high crystal prices, but it won't last quite as long as Cataclysm's Maelstrom prices did.

The real value of the Enchanting profession, however, will be the ability to disenchant gear. Your own leveling gear (quest rewards/world drops) and gear from leveling your other professions (Tailoring/Leatherworking especially). Even more profitable, however, will be pairing Enchanting with Jewelcrafting to participate in the new shuffle. This will lead to raw materials for leveling Enchanting, plus extra mats to sell to others on the Auction House.

Recommendation: You'll probably only need one enchanter as the existing bottlenecks for enchanting tend to be gold-based in the form of recipe costs, not token-based like Jewelcrafting.

The Launch Rush Professions
These professions are going to be extremely strong out of the gate, then settle into an average to below-average return on your time invested. If you fancy big profits quickly, focus on these for the first 3-4 weeks of the expansion, but don't neglect basic maintenance/leveling for the mainstays above. One significant change from Cataclysm worth noting is farming will generally be slower than the rush at the start of Cataclysm. Players will be restricted to ground mounts until they advance to level 90. This means slower travel between nodes, decreasing overall supply, sending the price/unit higher.

Mining
Mining provides the bulk of the raw materials for Jewelcrafting, Blacksmithing and some for Engineering. Jewelcrafters will be your biggest consumers in the early days and weeks of the expansion. Mining retains some value throughout as Blacksmiths need the processed bars for use in their products. Alchemists will need some of the bars as well for their transmutes.

Recommendation: You probably want one farming alt for the early stages of the expansion if you can spare the slot. Pairing it with herbalism could be a strong setup if you plan to sell the materials at the auction house. If you plan to use the ore yourself, then pairing with your Blacksmith or Jewelcrafter would be safe bets.

Herbalism
Herbalism provides the bulk of the raw materials for Inscription and Alchemy. Scribes will be burning through your herbs for Darkmoon cards and glyphs, while alchemists will use them for potions, flasks and gem transmutes.

Recommendation: If you want a farming alt, pair it with mining as mentioned above. If not, consider pairing with Inscription or Alchemy.

Skinning
Skinning is probably the weakest of the farming professions early on, but seems to fluctuate the least throughout the expansion. Because it only really supplies Leatherworking in large quantities, demand is simply not as high overall as Mining and Herbing. There are a lot more Jewelcrafters, Alchemists and Scribes looking to burn through Ore and Herbs than there are Leatherworkers looking for your leather. Still, there will be strong sales out of the gate, just not as good as the others.

Recommendation: One skinner is enough. It's the weakest of the farming professions overall, so make it your last priority in this category.

The Step-Child: Engineering
Unless there are major improvements made to the Engineering, it will continue to be a niche profession. There are some fun things you can do with it, including lots of convenience/quality of life improvements like mailboxes, repair bots, looterangs and more, but as a pure profit center, it just doesn't cut it.

The major selling points for Engineers has been the motorcycle mounts (though I rarely see them in the cities these days) and some pets. You've also got the perk of epic first-raiding-tier quality goggles. Engineering is the only profession I don't currently have (which I plan to correct on my current crop of alts hitting 85 before Mists), but there was a reason for that. Engineering just hasn't been a priority for me because it's too niche for my gold-making strategy.

Recommendation: One Engineer should be enough for anyone, but don't me afraid to leave this out of your arsenal if you don't have lots of max-level alts.

Next week, we'll look at the remaining professions, what I'm calling the Strong But Declining group.

5 Things you should be selling: Mining Blues

Gathering professions aren't a dead end when it comes to gold making.   Over and above the running around to gather materials,   mining is also capable of transforming ore and materials into different forms.   Forms that can be sold for good profits to material hungry crafters.

So here are five things you should be selling:.  Mining edition.

1.   [Earth Shatter]

Most gold goblins would identify this as a simple conversion flip.  Take one item at x cost,  convert it to 10 smaller items at x + a premium price.  But there are good reasons that this works.  First people will farm Primal Earth and many times only get between 8 and 10 into their bags.    To finish off the last of that Primal farming,  purchasing one or two motes becomes "cheaper" to them than trying to farm the rest.   [Elemental Blasting Powder] is a major leveling agent and crafting for engineers as well.  This ends up being in high demand and can easily double sales as new engineers are leveled.

2.  [Fire Sunder]

Another of the "convert to smaller items" ideas for gold making.   Fire is much more difficult to farm and ends up being in demand by both engineers and alchemist.   Alchemists use the [Primal Fire] for their [Primal Might] transmutes for sales.    Motes of fire are also used by multiple professions for their crafting. With the ease of leveling that has been introduced in game patches,   many toons do not get leveled in mining rich areas of the burning crusade expansion.  Negrand and higher level areas get skipped in the leveling progression,   so these materials become more and more unavailable on the open market.

3.  [Eternium Bar]

A gathered and smelted item from the Burning crusade expansion.  It's highest profit margins are used by blacksmiths to make [Eternium Rod].   Converting the raw [Eternium Ore] into bars will net a good profit from sales both to blacksmiths and other crafters using the item.

4.  [Hardened Elementium]

Used in high level crafting during the Cataclysm expansion,   taking 10x [Elementium Bar] and 4x [Volatile Earth] can get large profits from Blacksmiths and Engineers.    Used in both leveling recipes as well as the epic recipes.  These will make the [Hardened Elementium] continue to be in demand even after the Cataclysm expansion has come to an end until we have moved into the panderia expansion.
5.  [Titansteel Bar]

The king of all that a miner can make,  and continuing into the end of the Cataclysm expansion on,  will continue to be in high demand.   For one reason.   The [Mechano-Hog] (and the [Mekgineer's Chopper] for the alliance) is going to be in continuous demand.    3x  Titanium,  1x Eternal Fire,  1x Eternal Earth and 1 Eternal Shadow.   All three of these materials found during the Wrath of the lich king expansion have become rarer.   Making the titansteel bar becoming more profitable.   Look for this to continue as the Motorcycle mounts become in high demand for new toons during Mists of Panderia.

Ores and converting into bars will continue to be a gold venture as more and more toons are leveled.   Keeping an eye on the market and filling in gaps in demand based selling can bring in more gold to both the novice and advanced goblin.

Good luck and good hunting

5 things you should be selling. Engineer Love

This week is going to be straight forward.   After receiving multiple questions in my email asking me how they should make money in a specific profession.   I am going to present to you five (sometimes more) things that you should be selling right now

First the rules of the road.

1.   All recipes have to be obtained by either Training,  purchasing from a vendor or via reputation.
2.   No World drops or items that would require a larger than life grind to obtain (ala Fireland dailies)
3.   Materials can be gathered or crafted,   not requiring BOP dropped items or boss farmed items.
4.   Each item should make a minimum of 30% profit over cost of crafting.

And now on with the show.

Deciding that the first one to tackle is going to be what many consider the most difficult to make money at.   Engineering started off as being only having items that were crafted for personal playing enjoyment,  with the occasional low level "toys".  Rarely was engineering considered to be a "serious" profession.

With Burning Crusade,  items were added to the fold to make some profits available.   It opened the crafting of high level guns,  scopes and even a mount that could be sold.  Having rare world patterns in the mix such as the [Lifelike Mechanical Toad] as well as a few other farmable pets from gnomeregan that were made easier to obtain as the game expansions continued.   Cataclysm opened a wide number of sales opportunities for engineers,  combined with the opportunities from the previous expansions to present gold making diamonds in the rough.

So here is the list of engineer items you should be selling.

1.  [Plans:  Inlaid Mithril Cylinder]

This one is pretty straightforward.     You purchase the ink and common paper from the engineering vendor,   Craft,  then sell to blacksmiths.   The reason why it's so popular is because blacksmiths need it to craft the Inlaid Mithril Cylinders to sell right back to engineers for leveling,  as well as many items including the [Ultrasafe Transporter - Gadgetzan].  The recipe is taught by your local Engineer trainer.

2.  [Recipe: Goblin Rocket Fuel]

Another recipe that can be crafted and sold.  It's sold to alchemists,   many times for those that want to complete their collections.   Goblin Rocket fuel is a good seller for alchemist for the lower level toys.  It's also used for the [Firework launcher] and [Cluster Launcher] again for engineers.  This recipe is also taught by your local engineer trainer.

3.  [Tranquil Mechanical Yeti]

The end of a long,  involved quest line during Vanilla wow all the way to Wrath.  Cataclysm brought a quick shortening to the steps in the quest.   It is easily completed in around 30 minutes,  allowing you to be taught the pattern by Umi Rumplesnicker.    There are three quest lines that have to be completed,  starting with [Hammer Time] from Lillith the Lithe in Winterspring, ending with the quest [Are we there, Yeti?] from Umi.   The materials are easily farmable or purchasable from the auction house,  with a strong profit margin for new players as well as seasoned pet collectors.

4. Gnomish Army Knife

Another item from your trainer,   this item will be a decent seller now,  and will become more valuable  as we get closer to Mists of Panderia.  10 Saronite bars,  1 Skinning Knife,  1 Mining Pick and 1 Blacksmith Hammer nets you a decent sized profit.   I've sold these continuously from between 75g and 100g a piece,  more on days that multiple alt toons are created.   Giving a player access to multiple crafting tools,  as well as engineers getting access to a non combat resurrection attempt.   Making these very popular to have in players bags.

5.  [Mechano-hog] (Horde) or [Mekgineer's Chopper] (Alliance)

The bulk of your time to obtain the pattern requires your toon repuation to get to exalted with either Horde Expedition for the [Mechano-hog] or Alliance Vanguard for the [Mekgineer's Chopper].   The easiest way to gain exalted for either factions are to run wrath level heroics without a tabard for any faction,  or doing the dailies found in Icecrown,  Grizzly Hills and in Argent tournament.   The entire discussion on how to maximize your rep with these factions are on wowhead here.

The materials are both crafted and gathered,   the large ones being [Titansteel bar] from miners.  The Bind on Pickup items are only purchasable by engineers from the patrolling goblin Roxi Ramrocket found walking around the flight path in K3 in Storm Peaks.    Occasionally these can be found on the AH from runs in Ulduar,  engineers can deconstruct the mechanical bosses in Ulduar but are much easier to purchase from Roxi.   The BOE items cost approximately 11.4k (any type of personal or guild level bonus deductions can lower this price and gain more profit).    This is going to be again a big seller when Mists arrive due to the idea that many people will want this mount for their new Class/Race combination.    Many servers have these selling for 22k plus.

The Extras.

There are others engineer crafted items that can be sold for large profits.  The [Lil' Smoky] and [Pet Bombling] Schematics that drop from the last boss in Mekgineer Thermaplugg who is found at the end of gnomeregan.   This can be a difficult grind due the low drop rate (personally it took me 20+ runs for it to drop for my engineer.   Using real world materials,  these tend to have a acceptable profit margin as well as the other items mentioned previously.  Well worth taking the time to gain the two patterns.

I hope this will spark some profit making with your engineer.  What other items do you see as making money for your engineer?
