Preparing For the Future: Alts 101

As Mists of Pandaria matures and we continue on with the storyline.  More and more players will be creating alternate characters from their mains.   A tank main may create a ranged dps class.    A healer may want to try to enjoy relaxing with a melee dps class.

The farther that players get into the raiding depths,  the more apt their guilds will have a need for specific toons.   And this is where your preparation will become important.    Players will need to get their players geared quickly up to raid level standards.  So they will be ready to pay large amounts of gold to get the best gear that gold can buy.

Patch 5.2 is already on the PTRS,   and one of the occurrences that players on the PTRs are noticing that there is a large amount of powerful BOE weapons being dropped.   Those weapons will find themselves quickly on the market as will just as powerful armor.   The key to being on top of this wave of Alternate gearing is to have both BOE crafted gear available as well as the enhancements that are needed for raiding and high level questing.

So to be prepared for this,  investing and farming in raw minerals such as ore and enchanting materials will be very important in the next couple of weeks.   Those that wait til the last minute to start to prepare will end up being in the back of the line,  depending on the ebb and flow of the Auction House.

Plan both your material strategy as well as your gold strategy to be on top.   All materials will become just as valuable in the opening weeks of the 5.2 patch and future patches.   So setting your strategy and goals now will allow you to execute them correctly and effectively.

Keep your eyes on the prize and the prize will be yours

Should I sell or should I use

Having just started back into running instances and raiding (my original computer could not keep up with the graphics on even the lowest setting.)   I had to make those decisions that everyone from time to time have to make.   Should I roll need or greed.

Myself,  I've always kept a hard true rule.   If I need it then I had better be willing to equip it right then and there.  Many groups,  especially with BOE gear that is available in Raids and instances require that you equip it right there.  Keeping the people who will need on everything, even if they already have a version of it equipped. It work usually, though occasionally people will slip through the ninja cracks.

But as a seller of gold making merchandise,   Is it okay to need on something that you specifically know you will not equip but are going to sell.  I ran into this while running the first of the Dragon soul instances.   [Bindings of the End Times] dropped for our group.   Needing to make a quick decisions I went ahead and pressed greed on the item,  winning the random number generation contest.    A excellent 1k gold in my goblin pockets.  But it did make me wonder whether I had actually won it fairly.  Yes I did the right thing to roll greed knowing I was going to sell it (I run an arms warrior currently) and it was not high on my awesome list of items to get.   Scrolling back through my logs I saw two people who completely passed on the item.    I can only presume that they did not roll simply for either misreading the BOE status of the item,  or that they just assumed I would roll need on it and did not want to waste the time.

As the DS raids and instances continue on,  and the BOE items drop,   presuming that someone will automatically take the item just drains possible money out of your pockets.   Any run,  anything drops,   press greed (or if you legitimately need the item,  press need).   It's either that,  or go ahead and send me all your money now,  cause your just giving it away to someone else.

Good luck and good hunting

Getting Ready For 4.3: Clearing Inventory

Bashiok, one of the Community Managers at Blizzard, recently posted on his Twitter feed that PvP Season 10 is ending November 29. Historically, PvP seasons end approximately one week before a new patch drops. It's safe to assume that Patch 4.3 (now in release candidate form on the PTR) will be available on live servers as early as December 6. What does this mean for the avid gold-maker? Time to get ready for the patch.

This week I'll look at the first part of getting ready for the patch: getting rid of stuff that will lose value soon. Next Friday, I'll look at what to invest in for 4.3. With the recent news that WoW lost another 800k subscribers, the outlook may look bleak for 4.3, but I'm expecting 4.3 to bring back some of those subs and cause demand to sky-rocket. So stop by next week for some tips on what to do to get ready for the new patch.

Out With the Old
The first step to getting ready for Patch 4.3 is getting rid of stuff that will lose value soon. There are a number of items to be concerned about, across multiple industries:
  • Bind-on-Equip Gear
If you've been trying to make money flipping cheap BoE gear, it's time to get out.
The most notable drop will occur in 359 Plate Tank Shoulders (Pauldrons of Edward the Odd and Heaving Plates of Protection). Until now, those were Best-in-Slot items for Paladin and Warrior tanks who don't have access to raids. Hide of Chromaggus, popular with druids, was already hurt by the BoE Flickering Shoulderpads from Shannox, but this too will dip even further. The reason for this is that the current loot tables for 4.3 have iLevel 378 Shoulders for all specs in 5-man heroic dungeons. Other 359 BoEs like Soul Blades, as well as the current 378s from Firelands will see their value drop with gear of the same iLevel found in the new 5-man instances.
  • PvP Armor/Items
If you've got any PvP gear you're trying to sell, now is the time to get rid of it. Recipes will again be upgraded to a higher iLevel version of the PvP armor, so your current crafted gear will become nearly useless. If I had any lying around, I'd get rid of it for materials and a possible tip. Getting the mats back at a minimum allows you to hold them for crafting the new version when 4.3 hits and make way more money.
  • Chaos Orbs
If you're sitting on any Chaos Orbs, now is a good time to sell them via trade chat. I recently crafted and sold a 365 weapon for about a 5k profit. That's 1,000/orb (higher than I expected for sure). In trade chat they go for 200-300 gold. They will become Bind-on-Equip in 4.3, so you'll be able to pick them up on the Auction House (or sell them if you prefer). This will drive the supply up and prices down, so get as much as you can now for your chaos orbs. (Note: If you're a tailor, don't use your orbs until after 4.3. Your primary use for orbs is dream cloth, and the cost is dropping form 5 orbs to 4 with the new patch.)
  • Darkmoon Cards
This could be included with the BoE Gear category above, but I think it deserves it's own mention. There's one more Darkmoon Faire left between now and when the patch drops. 359 trinkets will all be replaced in 4.3 with 5-man drops, so sell what you can now.
What are you dumping prior to patch 4.3? What items did I miss? Sound off in the comments with your ideas.

I consider myself a somewhat casual auctioneer. I can be found via Twitter @Aleithia3. I also like getting email at Aleithia AT jasonthedce DOT com. Send me your questions and I'll try to write about them on the site.

With great transmogrifying comes great profit.

Like many of you I have been reading over the announced changes for patch 4.3.
Now, personally I am thinking more about how it’s going to make money for me than
how it’s going to effect my playstyle.

There are two major ways I see that happening.

First up is the one that is seeing the least press. The Looking for Raid feature. Now,
say what you like about whether it’s a good idea or a bad one, it is a money making
opportunity if you look at it.

Granted, my first choice would be to stock an alt like a vending machine full of
raid consumables and then sell them to unprepared players once we are inside.
Unfortunately it looks like right now that the cross server trade of goods and money
(other than conjured items) will still be in place.

There is still money to be made there though, you just have to look a bit deeper.

There will be a lot of folks that have been unable to raid for one reason or
another. Suddenly they will be able to. Prices for cut gems, enchants, and raid
consumables should go up to reflect the increase in demand. Scribes, don’t overlook
the fact that you can compete in that market as well with scrolls that count as an
elixir.

Simply put, if you stock up on a few of these now when you see them reasonably
priced, bank them until the wave of new raiders hits. There should be a tidy profit to
be made.

The second thing I am going to take a look at is transmogrifying. A touch more risk
here, but the payoff might be huge.

How the heck am I supposed to make money off transmogrifying you ask? Simple.

People are going to want gear that matches and looks good. The are going to want
complete sets to hide whatever mishmash of things they are wearing. Not everyone
mind you, but enough to make more than a few gold off of.

Now, a lot of folks are going to want to go and farm up old tier sets, old dungeon
sets, or other things that make them happy. I am more looking at those that are
wanting to have that “I have a set of gear” look, without spending the time farming it.

How do we help these poor souls?
