You got your jewelcrafter in my alchemist ....

On the day after a patch hits the realms, the jewelcrafting market provides many frustrations...

Which one of my crafters is going to make the most money?   Did i put enough materials away to ride
the wave of buyers to it's maximum?  How will I find the best way to replenish stock?  Is the elementium shuffle still valid at the inflated stack prices for ore?  Can I buy enough stock of blank gems to fill orders.

Inferno rubies sold out on many markets faster than people could restock the shelves.  Whether they
were cut or in raw form,  blank searches for inferno rubies were continual.  Same with many of the other colors (ember topazs and demoneyes seemed to be in the same predicament).

Across the board,  realms saw the depletion of the inferno rubies stock piled go quickly.   Six slots to stack their main statistic causes a lot of sales.   Not to count the need by multiple alternate toons etc.   Also included in this rush was the mass amount of shadowspirit diamond orders needed to be filled.

The problem with this issue is what could the jewelcrafter and alchemist combination use to maximize their profits?   With the stacks of elementium and obsidium ore dwindling,  the JC shuffle became much more expensive   On my server some of the ore stacks were going for over 250 a stack at it's highest.  The basic gems were going for obscene amounts (40g a piece of jaspers,  hessonites going for almost 50 and carnelians at 80g per).   Is transmuting inferno rubies and ember topaz the more economical way to use materials?  Would it be best to transmute shadowspirit diamonds (3 of each common gem needed) or transmute the rare gems that were selling and then wait for the market to balance itself and then sell inventory of the excess common and rare gems?

No doubt both would make large amounts of money.   You could easily just transmute the hessonites,  carnelians and even alicites into their respective gems with the needed herbalism materials and make a profit.  Or take all of them and transmute the respective shadowspirit diamonds.    At its heights on Tuesday and Wednesday on many servers even just listing the basic gems themselves you could make mass amount of gold.

So lets do a quick math review:

Assuming you are a transmute specialist (you did remember to change over before the more expensive
quest costs were put into effect right?),  you need 3 of each of the low level gems.

*these were basic figured from theunderminejournal.com.  As always your server may vary*

3 - hessonite  (40g+ selling raw)
3 - nightstone (40g+ selling raw)
3 - carnelian  (60g+ selling raw)
3 - alicite (20g+ selling raw)
3 - zephyrite (15g+ selling raw)
3 - jasper (20g+ selling raw)

Doing the math, crafting two shadowspirits you ended up with around 400g+ in materials.   That split to somewhere around 220g per diamond.  Now on my server the main shadow spirits were selling consistantly for around 360g per cut diamond.

Lets look at the transmutes we have available.

3  hessonites per transmute (@40g x 3 needed)+ 3 cinderbloom (@2g) =136 per ember topaz
3  carnelian per transmute  (@60g x 3 needed)+ 3 heartblossom (@4g) = 192 per inferno ruby
3  alicite per transmute (@20g x 3 needed) + 3 + 3 Whiptail (@2g) = 66 per amberjewel
3  zephyrite per transmute (@7g x 3 needed) + 3 Azshara's Veil (@2g) 28 per ocean sapphire
3  jasper per transmute (@20g x 3 needed) + 3 Stormvine @3g) = 69g per Dream Emerald
3  nightstone per transmute (@40g x 3 needed) + 3 Twilight Jasmine (3g) 120g per Demonseye

You can continue down the list,  and accepting the idea of variance between server fluctuations.  It
begins to come into light that the best way to maximize your profits is to transmute to the individual
rare items and cut them for a profit.   Even sales of the raw rare gems tend to hold onto this idea
for now.

A third option is just to sell the materials in their raw state.  This ends up being the quickest,  because it lists items without any crafting necessary.  But it also is the most limited in profit making.   You are susceptible to the rises and falls of the market.

Later on as the patch continues,  there will be a leveling out of the market.  Shadowspirit diamonds will begin to catch up and become the leading profit margin.   Elementium ore is already beginning to catch up from the large burst of need,  and many of the common gems will start to come down to a regular price.  As more and more jewelcrafters become comfortable resuming their normal crafting progression,  resuming their elementium/obsidium shuffle.   Pyrite ore on many markets didn't take as big of a nosedive as some had speculated.   Since there was multiple markets to relieve the stockpiles of pyrite ore (bars,  transmutes,  crafting ) it didn't shock the market as expected.   The possibility that an emptying of pyrite inventory later on in the next couple of weeks may also drive down many of the gem markets.

The need for the inferno rubies and ember topaz cuts,  as well as the other colored gems will equal out to levels similar to what they were at the end of patch 4.2.   If you keep these basic math formulas in your head,  then you will be ready for the switch and still keep on riding the profit wave.

Just keep a mental tally of how much you are putting into each transmute,  and decide which one will make you more profit.   For now the obvious choice on most servers is going to be the transmuting the inferno rubies,  ember topazs and other rare colored gems.  But be ready for the momentum shift to come.

4.3 PTR announced. (First Glance)

Over the next few weeks we will have lots of information as the last reported major patch upgrade
for cataclysm appears on the PTR's.

Information on new patterns and new items were data mined by mmo-champion.   But it is a rough list
of items and models.

With the 4.3 data mining this gives us the first of many chances to start piecing together information
on what it will mean to both the beginning and advanced Power Auctioneers.

Stepping through the professions the biggest thing seen is that there appears to be another crafting
element introduced into the materials needed.

Essence of Destruction seems to be used in all of the new patterns that will be available with the new patch. This probably means that both this items and the patterns will drop either from the bosses or trash runs with the new raids.    As with the previous 4.2 raids,   this item will be very high priced for the first month or so when it's available on the AH.   This also means that living ember,  the 4.2 crafting material,  will probably start to be in higher demand.  Both from the nerfing of 4.2 raids,  plus the
want for added gear to be crafted to raise Item level for the new 4.3 raids.

Here is a list of the new patterns broke down under professions

Tailoring

World Mender Pants
Bracers of Unconquered Power
Dreamwraps of the Light
Lavaquake Legwraps

All of these seem to be dps patterns,  with no healing patterns seen as of yet.   Where the potential for crafting and flipping both the items or the mats are high.   Healing classes may look at the lower 4.2
crafted items to finish off their Class Gear.   Nothing with the opening salvo of information shows that
the dreamweave timer or BOP status will be lifted.   So Investing in the pattern will end up being a high risk/high reward type of scenario.  As with all of these Epic level crafting recipes.

Blacksmithing

Bracers of Destructive Strength
Foundations of Courage
Pyrium Legplates of Purified Evil
Soul Redeemer Bracers
Titanguard Wristplates
Unstoppable Destroyer Legplates

As with the 4.2 Raid Patterns.  None of these appear to use truegold for their crafting.   Ghostcrawler announced in his explanation that there would be multiple patterns.  So it's assuming that these non raid level patterns will probably use truegold as their base instead of the Essence of Destruction.   So truegold as of now is still going to be a viable commodity to craft by alchemist or to save when demand is higher. Chaos Orbs will be used as a traditional material for crafting.   It's guessed that at some point one of the incremental patches will remove the BOP status of chaos orbs,  opening up another market for the non raiding crafter.     Mostly dps plate,  with two pieces of Healing plate has been added.    With the high amount of drops in the Fireland raids associated with healing items.   Healing plate crafted items may not be in high demand.

Leatherworking

Bladeshadow Leggings
Bladeshadow Wristguard
Bracers of Flowing Serenity
Bracers of the Hunter Killer
Deathscale Leggings of the Storm
Legging's of Nature's Champion
Rended Earth Leggings
Thundering Deathscale Wristguards

Each of these recipes take between 8 Pristine hides.   So look for both Heavy Savage Leather
and Pristine hides to be in high demand as these items begin to get crafted.    Stocking up on
Stacks of Heavy Savage Leather for conversion to pristine hide will set you farther ahead of the
Gold wars to come.

Jewelcrafting

The PTR notes are showing that the epic gems will be based on a 50 point seperation.  So epic gems will have either a full +50 to a stat,  or split between the two stats.   This ends up being good news for the non raiding jewelcrafter.  Most people will not spend a huge amount of money to gear for epic gems
with only +10 to their stats.   They are more apt to fill the gem slots with your Rare +40 stat gems or combinations of stats to reach their raiding mark.   With no information released yet on how to obtain patterns this will allow the non raiding jewelcrafter to feed the demand to gems they already have.   A wise jewelcrafter will look to purchase stock raw gems to either flip for profit.  Or to cut when the demand is high and the supply is low.   Also remember that with the new PVP season there will be a large spike for PVP specific Gems (+ resilience,  + resilience/haste,  residence/strength,  resilience/agi).   Stocking up on your raw gems in these categories may give a decent profit in the long term.

  • Notice with blacksmithing there are no high level weapon crafting patterns.   There may be more introduced later.  But it means there will be a larger demand on crafted or dropped items from Deathwing raids themselves.
  • There are multiple lists of items assumed to drop in the Deathwing lair raids.   Multiple boe items (including weapons and trinkets) where their demand will be high as well.
  •  The Raid patterns are taking a high amount of volatile fire and volatile water for crafting.   With 4.2 and the dailies volatile fires were lowered in value.  This may be a good opportunity to purchase volatile fires for crafting while they are low.   And alchemists switching from transmuting volatile airs to volatile water.
  • Snowballs will no longer be used for summoning the Tiny Snowman,  Winter Reindeer, Winter's Little Helper
[addendum]

Maelstrom Shatter has been added to Enchanting.  Will split one maelstrom crystal into two heavenly shards.    Should drive down the prices for heavenly shards while raising maelstroms.

For the list of all the items known from the ptr datamining mmo-champion has given a sorted list here

Speculate No More: Epic Gems Dropping in Raids in 4.3

Well, we finally have our first solid information on Epic Gems in patch 4.3. In an interview with Greg Street, lead systems designer for Blizzard, on a question about the new "Looking for Raid" tier of difficulty:

What achievements will be granted in the new Looking for Raid system and are they similar to existing ones or any new rewards?
Ghostcrawler: We are very concerned about preserving the sense of accomplishment for the Normal and Heroic tier. We don’t want to over reward Looking for Raid. It is really there for people who want to see the content and want to feel like they’re raiding, but we don’t want it to be more attractive than traditional organized raiding.

We will offer some achievements; they’ll be very simple, nothing like you’ll be able to get in a Normal or Heroic. For example, it might just be “Kill the first four bosses” as one achievement and “Kill the second four bosses” as another achievement, something like that. We won’t, for example, put the legendary in the Looking for Raid tier. We are doing epic gems this time around as a drop in the raid and we may not have those drop in the Looking for Raid tier.

How does this impact our gold-making business? Find out after the break.

Epic Gem Speculation, Not just for Breakfast Anymore

The Free online Dictionary at TheFreeDictionary.com gives the basic definition of speculation.

Engagement in risky business transactions on the chance of quick or considerable profit.

To the world of warcraft auction power seller.  This is the bread and butter of their fortune.   Some of the biggest sellers have discussed having over 35% of their income created in the first few days of new content patches.  Or major changes in the economy.

In this case we're going to center in on jewelcrafting and epic gems.   Both for the jewelcrafter and the non jewelcrafter.    It's important to understand that speculation is a high risk,  high reward scenario.   You can win big such as for glyphmas,  the introduction of new glyph slots for every character. It's also possible to lose big,  such as those that purchased multiple amounts of scarlet rubies waiting to transmute them to epic gems at the last patch of wrath.  Finding out that the transmute limitations were not removed as previously been speculated.  This is where you take chances and you enjoy why speculating can be very addicting win or lose.

So let's get to the nuts and bolts of what we are speculating with Patch 4.3.

To understand logical speculation study the past and how patches have changed when it comes to epic gems.  Not just the raw gems themselves,  but also the recipes.  For many,  the recipes will be just as valuable to have as the gems themselves.

With Burning Crusade,   Epic gems were first drops from  raid and Heroic instance  bosses.  More powerful gem patterns were able to be purchased with Reputation rewards from Scale of the Sands Vendors.    Added in a later patch were vendors for the Shattered Sun Offensive.   Both of these required work and running instance or raids multiple times to get them.  (They were never an automatic drop except the last boss of the heroic instance or from a raid boss).

Why is this important to know?   Because it created a  limited amount of Gems on the Auction house.  Raiders purchased these quickly while the regular average player didn't spend the money it cost to buy them.    The Uncommon cuts still dominated sales due to supply and demand.

The warcraft expansion Wrath of the Lich King created a much different Jewelcrafting atmosphere.  Epic Gems were able to be acquired through multiple abilities. They were able to be mined from Titanium nodes (an ore that was introduced in patch 3.01 but the gems themselves were not available to patch 3.2).    Epic gems were also prospectable  by  jewelcrafters from the same ore.  Gems could later be purchased with Badges of Justice  and Honor Points in future patches.

It's important in this case to see that the creators of the game presented not just the ore to produce the epic gems from the start of the expansion.  But also gave multiple ways to propagate gems to even the average players.   Alchemists created Prisms that would give them the opportunity for epic gems.  They could directly transmute one gem per 20 hour period through a mix of gathered materials.    This caused a larger amount of the blank gems to be available to crafters

Jewelcrafters were required to spend tokens earned via daily quests.   This gave them access to the patterns to cut the gem blanks and sell on the Auction House.   Also made available was the selling of titanium powder (Prospected from titanium ore) to further obtain tokens.   Purchasing all the epic patterns available a Jewelcrafter had to turn in (47 patterns x 4 tokens = 188 tokens).     PVP Jewel crafting Gem patterns  were also available for purchase from marks of wintergrasp (later to be converted to honor points). The Patterns were Bind on Pickup but the crafted gems were sellable on the Auction House.

In this case it's important to see that these gems had both multiple access points to get raw gems,  but crafted items always circled around the jewelcrafter.    With the introduction of all patterns needing to be purchased via Jewelcrafting tokens,  it created a balanced setting.   Do the dailies or prospect/purchase the titanium dust to get access to the patterns.  To many non raiding crafters it gave the opportunity to even the playing field for money making opportunities.

With the Cataclysm expansion,  the lessons of the past will spur the speculation of the future events.  It's assumed that patch 4.3 will be what introduces Epic Gems into the world. And the speculation has to start from there.

So let use what we learned from the past from the game developers to come up with some logical conclusions.    Developers of warcraft have stated many times they want to give access to items for everyone.  So to me this would eliminate the idea of just having raw gems being mined or dropped from Raid only bosses/areas.

Developers have yet to ever have raid level gems accessible only through world drops. With the WOTLK expansion they used the Jewelcrafting token system to propagate the patterns to all jewelcrafters.    To me this created the best balance because it again made it accessible to everyone.  Not just Raiders or powersellers who could put multiple amounts of gold to be the first on the server to own a pattern.   Supply and demand will be your direct reasoning on what you should acquire first when they become available.

Developers have before used a current ore and created the ability for prospecting to be done for raw epic gems from the material    In this case the highest ore in the game is  Pyrite Ore,  which is used for multiple patterns in different crafting items.   Alchemists use it for Truegold transmutes.   Blacksmiths use it to craft ebonsteel belt buckles.  My personal belief is that this is the method that the developers will use to propagate raw epic gems into the warcraft marketplace.

It is possible that the developers will use a new type of ore to add raw epic gems into the game play.   This would be something new from their previous game models and would shake up a lot of the market.   It would create a large supply and demand for the new ore and miners would own the market for multiple weeks.

Another possibility is the introduction of a higher version of Jewelcrafting tokens with a larger set of dailies to level the playing field to everyone.   Again this would be a new step
in direction for the developers.   They limited the sales of cut gems with the introduction of armor level limits for socketing.   This prevented lower armor than Cataclysm armor to be socketed with the higher gems.  It is a possibility that they will do the same for 4.3
raid/instance armor and require only epic gems in this armor.   Or only allow epic gems to be put in this higher level armor.  Either way would limit the amount of gem sales and would shake the Auction house speculation to it's core.

Also possible with the amount of power that is put in armor currently,  epic gems may be complete left out of future patches.    Considering that the developers usually end up creating epic gems one and a quarter more powerful than the uncommon gems.   For instance:  burning crusade gems went from +10 for their epic cuts such as Delicate Crimson Spinel to Delicate Cardinal Ruby during wrath epic gem availability.   This addition more than doubled the stats granted per gem socketing.     The developers may want to limit the power that the gems have and might eliminate the introduction of Epic Gems as a whole    Believing that this would be a very small possibility but still should be considered for your overall strategy.

So with that information I will introduce my overall strategy for both the Jewelcrafter and the non jewelcrafter.    This makes it available to every player instead of just a Maximum skilled Jewelcrafter or miner.

[Addendum:  Epic Gems drop in Raids Only.according to Ghostcrawler in an interview    I will keep the initial strategy up on this entry.    Blizzard has added before that their intentions were to do one major change in the production of content or raw materials.  Where later they offer a different production due to difficulty or user discussion.]

Jewelcrafting Strategy:

First step is to either restart or continue to do your daily token quests.   If inflation  continues like normal it will cost between 5-6 tokens per epic gem pattern.    I'm expecting approximately 200 tokens to be able to acquire every epic pattern for patch 4.3.    Even if these patterns become available from other methods,  there will be chimera eyes available for purchase for crafting as well as PVP patterns that have been introduced in the past patches.  With a low risk for these investments moneywise other than your time spent and the cost of the materials to finish the quests you end up being farther to your monetary goals.    As you continuing to do the Obsidium/Elementium shuffle (discussed in the JMTC forums here) then you should have multiple mats to use on these dailies.      When the information is first data mined and presented (keep an eye on JMTC to be one of the first journals to present breaking information to it's readers).  Plan ahead to make sure that you know exactly what ones you want to purchase first.   I always suggest purchasing the big three single stat gems patterns first (+agi,  +int and +str) then purchase your next stackable tanking gem (+stam).    Future purchases can be done using a supply and demand method depending on your server economy requirements.   Ultimately the strategy would be to have enough gem tokens to purchase most if not all of the patterns.   Preparing you to be able to supply anything on the Marketplace that is required.

My next suggestion is to start purchasing as much pyrite ore as you can at a set price depending on your server market.    My server (Shandris - US) goes for around 9 gold per ore but can consistently be found for 5-6 per ore.   This may seem like a large investment but this is going to be the bulk of your sales possibilities.   Also this will be your safety margin.    Pyrite will end up being in very short availability if epic gems are prospected from the ore.   This will cause not just a rise in the raw materials.  but also will cause the truegold and ebonsteel belt buckle prices to go higher.   Your safety net is that you will have this available to sell to not just Jewelcrafters,  but to blacksmiths,  and alchemists as well.    Your risk/reward is still large if something happens that no epic gems are introduced.  Or some other limitation is placed that limits access to Epic Gems.  But you will still have these items to sell to regain some of the losses.

On a non commodity strategy.  Be prepared to not sleep patch day.  At minimum  be prepared to post as much and as fast as possible.  You will be undercut that day quickly.   and continually.   Jewelcrafting will again be the belle of the ball when it comes to money making.    Patience is also a great weapon to have when it comes to making gold.  Let people burn through their stocks on patch day.  And then save your amount of pyrite for server raid days and weekends.    Time your stocking of raw materials and raw/cut gems for when they are at their highest demand.    Take the opportunity to know who your heavy hitters are on a server,  and add them to your friends list to keep an eye on when they continually add their auctions.   If you are the only one online,  post multiples of those Gems or Stacks of ore  that are selling well.      Assume that your sales will be out of date and undercut 2 hours after you have posted them.    If the item are not sold within that 2 hour period,  then the odds become less and less that it will sell on that posting cycle.   Cancelling and relisting the auction will give you a better sales average than letting the auction run it's normal timed course.

Be prepared for people to list stacks of ore very low.    Undercutting is an art form to the power auctioneer.   Jumping on a low price will be very necessary if you want to maximize your profit.     Keep a 20% rule in mind.  If a stack of ore can be purchased and flipped for 20% profit.    Invest the money and reap the rewards.    Watch your server trade channel for people wanting to empty their stockpiles quickly.    With a heavily fluctuating market;  resourceful powersellers will be prepared to step back and regroup and let the other less experienced auction sellers eat at their own resources too quickly.    Then as the stocks dwindle control the prices for a larger profit.    You have an extended amount of time to show your profits while others will be faced with a panic of  a "get my money now" philosophy.

Non Jewelcrafter Strategy

The Non Jewelcrafter will have to rely on using stocking principles for Pyrite Ore and prepared to buy Raw Epic Gems to resell.    With limited revenue streams, there is a higher risk than for a Jewelcrafter.  But the same ideals apply when it comes to pyrite being a safe investment.  A smart investor will always have an "out" to limit losses if speculation does not occur exactly as hoped.

Another option would be to hire a jewelcrafter to prospect the ore for you.   Allowing you access to epic gem blanks.   I would suggest to work with a guild member.   They would appreciate the gold for a little work,  and would be less likely to take your materials and run to make a profit for themselves.    One of your chat channels should give you exactly what they "loot" from the prospected ore.  So there is no question of whether an item was obtained from the prospecting.     Offer a tip compensating the amount of work they did,  and then sell the raw epic gems on the auction house or through trade chat.

Continuing speculation will be going on as we march to patch 4.3 and beyond.  Part of the enjoyment is to be able to discuss not just what your planning on doing,  but why you think it will be a winning strategy.   Leave me a message to show just how you did.  Or offer a drink to those that didn't plan ahead and can only wish they were a part of Jewelmas.

Monopoly Tactics

Written By: Leo

Hi there,
I enjoy your blog very much, and there is a lot to learn. I started seriously getting interested in gold making, during WTLK, when I was scraping to pay my repair bills and elixirs for raiding. I was actually running dailies for these.

Since then I've gotten:
I keep a minimum of 100.000 gold between my alts (one server), and at the moment I have 128.000 (cash). I don't raid anymore (no time ), so I am not interested in buying the latest piece of gear. Eventually I want to give every one in my guild a chopper so we can do battlegrounds in style.

Most of my gold I made with alchemy and jewelcrafting.

These days I have little time, and prefer to spend a short time every day to make some gold, like 30 minutes, and a bit more time to level a lower level alts. The dungeons queues for my end game DPS-es are just too long, tanking and healing is just not my favorite. Lower level dungeons are fun and short and to the point, even for tanking and healing.

Put Your Gold To Work in Patch 4.2

This post was submitted by Terroot. Leave a comment letting us know whether you'd like to see more from this author!

With patch 4.2 quickly approaching (June 28), now is the time to put your gold to work.  With this next patch brings the opportunity to make what I like to call "easy gold".  I call it easy, simply for the fact that it requires no extra work other then just buying things off the auction house and and reselling selling them shortly after.

Let me start with the obvious things you want to look for while browsing the auction house. In patch 4.2, the current Valor and Conquest gear will become purchasable with Justice and Honor Points respectively. This may seem like a small change, but in reality, it's something that we can take advantage of.  Many people will be purchasing this new gear and this is where we come in.  With such a large spike in new gear, the jewelcrafting/enchanting market's are likely to also see that same large spike.  By knowing this ahead of time we can begin stocking up on raw gems and enchanting materials.

Even if you don't have an Enchanter/Jewelcrafter you can still capitalize on these markets.  If you've been following your server's market at all, you'll have a general idea of what heavenly shards, inferno rubies, and other materials go for.  Picking these materials up for even what they normally go for can still net you a profit.  With demand for these products at a relatively low point, you shouldn't have a problem creating a small stockpile in a week's time.

Now for those of you that want exact specifics.  All Cataclysm Enchanting goods including Hypnotic Dust, Heavenly Shards, and even Maelstrom Crystals should be a good investment at this time.  I say even Maelstrom Crystals because the supply should go up with the introduction of all this new gear.  The gear from the Zandalari Randoms will now be disenchanted at a much higher rate due to better gear becoming more widely available.

Even with the increase in gear supply, the increase in demand should keep the price up.

As for Jewelcrafting, Inferno Ruby are your number one bet.  Expect for them to see at least one large jump in price towards the beginning of the patch.  If you are able to cut them or have access to someone that can, you will have no problem getting rid of these come patch time.  The other gems may also see an increase in price but don't expect them to be anywhere near as profitable as Inferno Rubies.

4.2- An End to Profitable Jewelcrafting....Or Maybe Not?

This post is a submission by Yoni to become a writer here at JMTC. If you'd like Yoni to come back again then give a thumbs up in the comments!

Hey my name Yoni , I much like many Jewelcrafters/Alchemists  am making a considerable profit from cheap ore (prospecting and transmuting into inferno rubies). But, unfortunately it looks like Blizzard has caught on. In patch 4.2 Un-cut green gems (Jasper,Nightstone etc.) will no longer have a vendor price of 5 gold, it will be reduced to a mere 50 silver.  At first I was devastated, at 50 silver per green gem, prospecting ore will no longer have the guaranteed vendor value that keeps the ore market from dropping.  Now, this seems to be all bad, but there is also a positive aspect to the 4.2 nerf.

Inferno Rubies.  On many realms the price of these, both cut and uncut, has plummeted. This is due to Jewelcrafters ability to prospect ore and "recycle" all the gems other than Carneleian (transmuted into inferno rubies) by selling them to a vendor for the same price or even higher price than the cost of the ore.  So simply put, Jewelcrafters can obtain huge amounts of Carneleian from prospecting for very cheap.  The Inferno Ruby market is then flooded by a surplus of gems and prices drop.

Current Ore Recycling Method

In 4.2 the reduced vendor value, from 5 gold to 50 silver will effectively stop the "ore recycling" that has created such a surplus of gems in the current patch.  Jewelcrafters will no longer have a way to offload large quantities of surplus green gems with no loss.  There will still be some uses for gems such as creating D/E items, but the demand for these material wont come close to the amount of gems being dumped on vendors in the current patch

4.2 Patch Ore System

So, I expect the price of Carnelians and subsequently Inferno Rubies to go up considerably because the market should become less saturated with Gems, not to mention the need for gems to fill the slots of all that new shiny gear coming with 4.2.      I also don't see the ore market collapsing completely because it doesn’t rely solely on Jewelcrafting, though prices will drop.

So my final advice is this: if you have stacks of greens, get rid of them before 4.2.  Possibly stockpile some Inferno Rubies, as their price will likely go up considerably.  Lastly, don't give up on Jewelcrafting just yet, prospecting in 4.2 will still be profitable,  and there is always epic gems to look forward to in later patches.

Thanks for reading, comments and criticism welcome :)

Post Fail + New Prof Recipes Locations!

First things first. I simply want to apologize for yesterdays post. It was incorrect information that I should of looked/researched a little deeper. It's something that I should of caught on earlier, so I apologize for that. Even though yesterdays post was a complete failure one of the comments really caught my eye:

" Wonder if you bought "valor" gear before you logged off and then revendored after the patch if you would get valor or justice points. I did this with pvp badge gear in wotlk with unintentional success.
With the valor earned/week cap though, I'm not sure it would work for more than one or two pieces; it may not allow the refund beyond the cap. Just curious, any thoughts. "
- Suite Dreemz

That could very well be a possible way around stockpiling valor, though it's semi-risky but the reward is huge. It's a simply possibility that could very well work out in the end ( like  said it worked for him in wrath )

I also wanted to talk about the new profession recipes that are coming in 4.2. They will in fact be coming for reputation vendors from the new Firelands raid/zone. If you're even remotely interested in getting these recipes I'd get your alts quested through the entire Hyjal zone and once 4.2 hits do the quest hub/dailies until you have the required rep to get whichever recipe you'd like.

Once you get the new daily hub done according to mmo-champion the things that the three vendor sell will in fact be buyable with gold. How much who knows but I'd definitely pay in upwards to 5-10k for the new profession recipes. By the looks of it, Blacksmiths will be able to buy 8 new patterns from the vendors, engineers get 2, Tailors will have access to 1 and last but not least, leatherworkers will have access to 2 recipes from the firelands daily quest hub.

If you're one of the first to obtain and craft these recipe you're going to be making a killing for the first couple weeks or so.

Obsidian Shuffle Nerfed Even Further

If you haven't been keeping up with the news lately you'd notice that the obsidian shuffle is going to be nerfed even further when patch 4.2 hits. According to Joystiq.com and their new article the new vendor price for uncut green gems has been changed to 50s.

What will happen to the obsidian shuffle? For one, people will learn to adapt, but I can definitely see the casual jewelcrafters panicking and possibly leaving the market alone for quite some time. The ore market will likely crash and I'm sure we can expect to see people swap to gathering herbs instead of gather ore after this patch. This new update brings the new vendor price for obsidian ore at 15g per stack.

I did some articles back in the past, I'm not going to rewrite them, but instead relink them to you. It's the same content, same idea, the obsidian shuffle gets nerfed and I'm sure what the outcome is going to be.

One thing that I do want to toss out there: get rid of any heavenly shards before 4.2. People will most likely catch onto how to craft & obtain some cost effective heavenly shards once 4.2 hits as they'll want to squeeze as much profit as possible from their ore.

What do you think will happen to the obsidian shuffle in 4.2? Will it still be worth doing? Will the enchanting material market crash due to a high supply & low-medium demand?

Icy Prism Cooldown Removed

It is now confirmed. The old Icy prism from Wrath of the lich king has had it cooldown removed. This is an excellent "stealth buff" for us gold makers. You now have the ability to obtain wrath rare & epic gems and also a chance at dragons eyes all for the low cost of 1 icy prism.

Let's take a look at how much one Icy Prism will cost to craft - I'm using TUJ and I'm picking a random server for every item:

  • Frozen Orb - 9-15g
  • Chalcedony - 2g
  • Shadow Crystal - 2.5g
  • Dark Jade - 2.5g
That brings the total cost of one Icy Prism in the ballpark of 15-25g. What can you obtain from one Icy prism? Whatever you'll obtain it'll be well worth over 25g once it cut and listed at the auction house.

What people don't realize is that Yeah cataclysm gems might be better off for the higher levels, but guess what? Cataclysm gems require an item level of 285+ while the old wrath gems do not! By selling wrath gems you're able to target the people who are under level 80 and are simply leveling through content. I've been selling wrath epic gems for a while at 100-150g per gem and I'm not surprised they're selling, nope not one bit. Gold's inflated so much to the point where 100g is child's play, I mean honestly I know you can go make/earn 100g in under 5 minutes regardless of what you're doing.

People will and ARE buying wrath gems, it's an essential part of human beings to fulfill that missing socket in X gear, thus they run to AH and end up buying these gems. With the cooldown removed from the Icy Prism you now have an easy way to obtain wrath gems, hell you could even buy Saronite Ore and prospect it to obtain wrath rare gems and materials for the icy prisms themselves. This market is golden and those who are in it are raking in thousands of gold per day simply because no one is in it!

What are you waiting for? Start making those Icy prisms and start raking in extra gold per day! Who knows, wrath gems might even sell better than cataclysm gems on your server!

What it all means - JC Gem Vendor Change

So yesterday's post brought up a lot of questions/issues with the vendor price being brought down to 75s per gem, and I'd like to exactly tell you what is going to happen with this change.

For one, you're going to see a lot less people buy ore, due to the safety net of having a high floor price, thus ore will be in high supply but low-medium demand. People won't be buying as much as they have been in the past and with botters putting up thousands of thousands of stacks up at the auction house, the ore will eventually fall, I expect prices in the 15-20, maybe 25g/stack range, maybe even less.

Next, you'll mostly likely see the enchanting materials rise. Why? No one will be doing the shuffle, thus leaving a gap in the market. There won't be a "good" way to obtain enchanting materials and the demand for them is still there, sadly the supply simply won't. It might be a good idea to stockpile some enchanting materials as they'll mostly likely rise a week or so after patch. One could disagree and say that they'll fall, but personally I think that people will at first be scared to go anywhere near Obsidium for at least a week or two until prices stabilize, thus again, creating a "gap" in the market - leaving it short of supply and normal/high in demand.

Next, you're going to see materials drop a bit, namely metas and rare gems. Those who didn't vendor their gems before 4.1 will seek for a way to get rid of their gems instead of vendoring them for the obscene price of 75s per gem and they'll most likely transmute them into metas and rares to sell at the auction house. Even after the patch I expect both of these markets to be flooded - this will become the new "shuffle" and competition will be heavy.

All in all, keep in mind that the information is indeed DATA MINED information, so one should approach this subject carefully until we have confirmation from blizzard that this change is in fact real. My suggestion to the one who are deep into the market: Get out of the market for now, you're better off being safe than sorry.

One thing I want to ask you guys, with this change, could this lead/support the theory of a new ore coming in 4.1/4.2? Leave a comment below!

Patch 4.1 & Jewelcrafting Gem Vendor Prices

I just checked MMO-Champion and to my surprise there was something that was data-mined. It's a real shocker if it's true, read the change below.

Jewelcrafting

This changes the entire market, it brings Obsidium and Elementium floor prices way down - obsidium's new floor price will be 4.5g, down from 54g. If Blizzard does decide to go forward with this change the whole market will crash, the demand for obsidium and elementium will most likely crash due to no more demand, since there won't be a safety net anymore.

Do keep in mind that this data-mined stuff, Blizzard hasn't stated that this is in fact a real change. Datamined things have been wrong in the past - remember when MMO-Champion datamiend that wrath epic gems had their cooldown removed? They were wrong and caused thousands of people to lose out on a lot of gold.

My Suggestion? Get out, and get out now. You're better being safe and protected than being out 5,10, even 20,000g. While I don't expect the patch to hit anytime soon ( perhaps in 1-2 weeks ), I'd suggest that you get out of the market as soon as possible. Get to cutting those gems, prospecting that ore ASAP!

The days of making gold from the obsidium shuffle are over, prices are crashing and if Blizzard decides to go ahead with this change, it will be the final nail to the coffin. It's a grim day for us WoW Gold makers, a grim day indeed.

What are your thoughts? What do you think about the change? What will happen to the market?

Alternative Jewelcrafting Market

Yesterday I wrote on how you can think outside the box and make gold with tailoring. Well today I'd like to do the same but this time with Jewelcrafting. We all know how flooded the Obsidium shuffle market is - everyone is in the market and it's constant undercutting. Think outside the box and see what jewelcrafting has available at the lower levels, see what's profitable to craft and possible disenchant, or simply sell the crafted good at the auction house for a profit.

Let's focus on something that I like to call the Thorium Shuffle. It's the same aspect as the obsidium shuffle - except to a lesser extent.

  • Buy Thorium when it's cheap
  • Smelt some into bars and craft Thorium Settings - Save them for the next step
  • Prospect the rest - you're mainly looking for 3 gems Huge Emeralds, Azethorian Diamonds & Blue Sapphires, also snatch Essence of undeath as it will be needed soon. If you do not wish to go on, you can list the gems at the AH for massive income - these gems are needed to level JC and they're always in demand
  • Craft Sapphire Pendant Of Winter Might, Glowing Thorium Band & Emerald Lion Rings - Then DE
  • Sell DE Mats or use for BOA enchants
Alternatively, you can craft Enchanted Thorium Blades - these will yield you more essences. I'd craft 1/2 and 1/2 as you'd want a nice dispersion in your supply, you do not want to flood the market.

I've been doing the above for about a year and half and I've always found it extremely profitable. If you do end up selling the gems, be wary as they tend to have some pretty big deposit costs at the Auction house, especially if you list them in stacks of 5's, 10's, & 20's.

Again, this is an alternative, you don't have to it, but it's nice to rake in that extra income from a market that's rarely touched by many people as they're normally and typically busy with the " new and shiny Cataclysm recipes ". Personally, I found it a rather nice change to prospect thorium instead of Obsidium/Elementium every once in a while.

Woah.. Woah.. Woah..

Yesterday while browsing/reading some of the blogs I stumbled upon a very interesting post. It was a real shocker to be honest. It's a very interesting post to be quite frank, and it definitely caught my attention. The post I'm referring to is a post over at Venture, LLT.

To sum up the post, Stede believes that epic gems won't be coming from Pyrite, there are far too many things that lead up to Blizzard possibly adding a new Zone ( and possibly a new ore ). Patch 4.2 is being ran through the pipes and a new zone/daily quest hub location is on it's way so it got me thinking.

My thoughts on this? I ended up doing a ton of research, going back through a million MMO-Champion pages, flipping through data mined stuff/content from the Cataclysm beta and you guys won't believe what I found. It's been right under our noses this entire time! We've been worried about stockpiling Pyrite Ore... but I think I've found the new Cataclysm ore that will yield epic gems.... Black Iron Ore.

I'm fairly certain that this will be included in patch 4.2 - If Blizzard had any chance to add in a new ore 4.2 would be the perfect timing, a new zone - a new ore. It just works. There are a couple comments there hinting that this ore will yield epic gems - which makes stockpiling pyrite ore almost a ticking time bomb.

What do you guys think? Could it be possible?

Do you have too much ore?

A frequent question that is being asked around everywhere is what do I do with all of this ore? Everyone and their friend is now doing the Obsidium/Elementium Shuffle - and botters just keep posting and posting the ore for cheaper and cheaper, to the point where it's so cheap you'd be stupid NOT to buy it.

There are two main things that you simply have to know when you're buying ore from the Auction House. The first if that you need to know the floor price ( the amount of gold a stack of ore will yield you when you use X strategy ). The floor price for Obsidium is 54g, the Floor price for elementium is 44g. Knowing that, you can safely buy any amount of ore under those prices and you simply know that you're going to be making profit.

The second thing that you need to know is what you're going to do with the Ore and finding out if the method you chose is profitable.. Are you going to prospect it? Smelt it into bars? Craft JC jewelry and disenchant it? Transmute the prospected gems? Transmute meta gems? I've made a nice little picture for you guys to help you out if you have too much ore and don't know what to with it.

Woops! Forgot the Yes -> Buy ( just assume it's there! )

If you bought the ore below it's floor price cutting and vendoring the common gems will always give you your initial investment. Vendoring gems is like your safety net, which is something that is always great to have in case a certain market tanks.

Epic Gems in Patch 4.1 & 4.2

With the recent announcement that patch 4.1 will not contain the Firelands Raid by Blizzard and instead 4.2 will contain it, it got me thinking. Well Blizzard said that 4.2 will be released shortly after 4.1.. and what major thing could either of these patches bring..? Epic Gems.

If we go back and analyze the data from the past expansions we notice that Blizzard released the Burning Crusade epic gems in patch 3.1 along with the first major content patch that Burning Crusade got. Let's Fast Forward to Wrath of The Lich King, epic gems don't hit until 3.2, but this time it's released along with the second major content patch. What does this leave us with for Cataclysm? Epic gems could hit in either 4.1 or 4.2, both of which are supposedly right around the corner.

I wrote a post not long ago debating if you should be stockpiling pyrite ore or if it's too early. My opinion has then shifted, I think now is the time to be stockpiling the pyrite ore. You don't really have a lot of time if 4.1 and 4.2 is coming out soon, especially if 4.2 is going to be released shortly after 4.1. If you haven't already I suggest that you start buying pyrite whenever it's cheap ( if you haven't already ). I've had a couple people ask me if I think they'll add a new ore into the game that will yield epic gems, so I'll put my two cents into that. I personally don't think blizzard will go in and add a whole new type of ore, it hasn't happened in the past and I don't see why they'd do it now.

Another thing that you might want to stockpile is rare gems. Why? Because you will most likely be able to transmute them into epics. Now you're not going to want an absurd amount of gems stockpile because the transmute will also most likely have a cooldown on it. Unless you plan on having multiple alchemists ( 5+ ) I'd say that you're safe with a couple hundred of each color.

I'm not the only one wondering when and were epic gems are coming from, Anaalius made a recent post on his blog that I think ties in very well with this post, if you're interested check out where he thinks epic gems are going to come from. It's an excellent post and I suggest you read it if you're really going to make using epic gems to make gold from once they're released.

With the 4.1 and 4.2 announcement what are your thoughts on the epic gems ordeal?

New Jewelcrafting Meta Gems = Gold!

Patch 4.0.6 is here and the new meta gems have dropped, I've heard reports from people that they're making as much as 100k a day selling these babies, and I wouldn't doubt it.

There are three new meta gems, Agile Shadowspirit Diamond, Reverberating Shadowspirit Diamond, Burning Shadowspirit Diamond . They're all best in slot for all classes, creating a HUGE demand for these three meta gem cuts.

I've had multiple people tell me that they've bought the recipe for the new meta gems for as much as 10,000g. Now you must be thinking, that's insane right? 10,000g for one recipe!?! Well they're right, I'd personally pay as much as 20,000g for the Burning Shadowspirit Meta Cut, why? Because these gems are currently going for as much as 1,000-1,500g per. I tipped the guy who cut me one 250g with my mats, and when he cut mine, he had 20 other people already waiting in line getting their own meta gem cut.

The recipes are Cataclysm world drops, look for the recipes at the Auction House. I wouldn't suggest going out and trying to the farm the recipe, it's extremely hard to "farm" a world drop. You'd be better off camping the AH until one of these recipes pops up, and hey you might even get lucky and snatch one for cheap, who knows?

Do you have any of the new meta gem cuts? If so how much have you made?

Stockpiling Pyrite Ore, Worth It?

Let's talk about the future today; Pyrite Ore. Well all know what happened in Wrath of the Lich King, Epic gems became obtainable from Titanium ore in the patch 3.2, the people who had titanium ore stockpiled made thousands upon thousands of gold the first week that epic gems were released, the others; not so much.

So let's fast forward to Cataclysm, Pyrite ore is the equivalent of Titanium, Patch 4.0.6 is being released next Tuesday and we're getting closer and closer to 4.2. Will the new epic gems be obtainable from prospecting pyrite ore? If so, should we be starting to stockpile this stuff months before Blizzard announces epic gems?

The patch is coming, will you have enough Jewelcrafting tokens to get all the epic gems cuts desired? Or are you using those tokens now to buy rare & meta gems? Will it be worth to save 30-40 Jewelcrafting tokens?

The answer is yes, it will definitely be worth it. At least saving a bunch of Jewelcrafting tokens is something that is VERY smart to do when epic gems come out. Pyrite ore? That's personal preference, myself personally I pick it up when it's cheap and just toss whatever I can into my own personal bank.

My though on stockpiling Pyrite ore is, " Hey if Blizzard doesn't make epic gems obtainable from pyrite ore, then I can simply prospect to meet my costs, if not more because of the volatile earth that comes from prospecting pyrite ore "

So what are your thoughts? Are or will you stockpile Pyrite ore? Are you going to start saving Jewelcrafting tokens months before any announcements are made?

Cataclysm Gem Market Too Crowded?

Why not try the other gem markets? *Scratches head* Other gem markets? What are you talking about Mageshadow... Why not try selling the Wrath Of The Lich King and Outland gems instead of those heavily camped and undercut Cataclysm gems?

I've had my jewelcrafter around since Wrath so he has most of the major wrath gem cuts. I still have truckloads of saronite ore that I kept from stockpiling pre-Cataclysm's release. I've been prospecting the Saronite ore & I've been making a killing selling cut rare gems at 75-100g per! The gold to be made here is simply insane!

I'll explain why these gems are a gold mine, you'd think that people would buy the cataclysm gems for their leveling alts but the fact is that they can't! Cataclysm gems have a ilvl 285 requirement thus they cannot be put on anything below Cataclysm gear! Isn't that simply beautiful? Blizzard created an excellent gold making opportunity and you better be taking advantage of it!

What I've found is that the straight stat gems are selling the best, Agility, Intellect, Strength, Etc & I've also found that the occasional Haste and Spirit and other cuts sell once in a blue moon. One of the great things when selling wrath/bc gems is that the market is all yours to take! In the 5 weeks that I've done this I've encountered little to no competition. Another great thing is that the gems go in batches of 2's and 3's as most gear have either two or three slots

You'd be surprised how much people are willing to pay to get their toons decked out so they can go smash other people in battlegrounds. Is your Cataclysm gem market too over camped? heavily undercut? Try the Wrath and Outland Gem market and you'll be amazed how much gold there is to be made here!

Making Thousands Of Gold From 1 Daily Quest

Jewelcrafting has been an excellent way to make gold in this expansion thus far, prospecting ore nets me thousands upon thousands of gold, and I have been making even more gold by doing one small little trick.

This little trick is that I wait for the Jewelcrafting daily to come up that requires gems cut, once I see that the daily requires X gem I go to the AH and list them. Why? Why wait for the daily to require a gem? Because the demand for X gem will be insane. Sure you can sell Nightstones, Zephrydites, & Jaspars when it's not the daily but I find when the daily does require one of the three gems, prices go up, and they stay up for most of the day.

I've sold as many as 150 Nightstones in one day at 45-60g/per gem. One of the great things is that the quest requires three gems instead of one or two, thus people buy them in packs of three. I've also barked in trade some offering to sell gems 5% cheaper than the current AH prices and you'd be surprised at the amount of people who will take up this deal.

Another thing I found is that I can leave up my gems for 24 hours and they will all sell, even if I get undercut minutes or hours later, my gems still sell. Why? Because there is such a high demand for these gems and no one has enough supply to post, so my gems will be eventually be the lowest priced gem at the Auction House.
