Do You Know The Muffin Man?

Leveling cooking on alternate toons can be tedious.   It is exciting with your favorite toon because you get to check out new recipes and new 'tastes' that an expansion brings.  Even leveling cooking on your backup can be just as exciting.  Mists of Pandaria offered all of the different 'ways' of cooking that you aren't locked into leveling one direction to hit the maximum profession level.

When it came to leveling that 4th or 5th toon,  leveling their cooking because as exciting as watching paint dry.  The great search for another point towards getting him (or her) to be able to cook rice pudding or anything.

Thankfully, there is a method to the madness when it comes to having maximum leveling in cooking.  The new Warlords of Draenor expansion are going to be tied much closer to having all of the professions being useful.  Many of the foodstuffs that are showing up on the PTR's have active ingredients that are tied to other professions.  Fishing will also become a very important part of a well rounded character progression.

Guilds will be emptying their storehouses in the coming months.  A shrewd gold goblin will be keeping an eye for large bargains of food items, not just to finish leveling their own toons,  but sales to up and coming players who do not want to take the time to farm their own materials.  Where the daily food quests cut into the need to buy all of the materials continually,  there will still always be a demand from the impatient player who wants to get that cooking leveling done now.

So watch both the Auction House and trade chat for players emptying their banks and personal collections of raw cooking materials.  A small investment now can both both personally edifying (your quarter word for the day) and add to your bankroll in the upcoming months.

WOD: Saddle Up Your Horses

I like to concentrate on the here and now when it comes to making gold in World of Warcraft.  But some things really cannot be held back from what is seen in patch notes from the beta of Warlords of Draenor.

In the latest patch notes there was hidden among all the talent changes and different calculations a little addendum when it came to mounts.

Tailors since Burning Crusade had the ability to make flying carpets.  For mount collectors, this was tempting because you could fly around everyone pretending you were Aladdin (Or Jasmine if that's your schtick).    But anyone who didn't have a tailor on the payroll was out of luck to ride the carpet lightning.

Til now that is,  because if things hold up with the PTR,  flying carpets remove the tailoring requirements to use.   Now understand this is still the a possibility.  Things can always change in an update.  But this is the important part of looking at all of the builds from the PTR and taking advantage of the changes.

The materials are relatively easy to purchase farm (Netherweave,  Frostweave,  Ore to prospect for the Monarch Topaz stones needed).  Multiple runs through soloable raids can net a lot of the materials needed quickly.  Just another good reason why you should be soloing old raid content on your off times.

It never is too early to start saving items for the next expansion.  With the changes in how professions are leveled (boosted points,  using current expansion materials for leveling) there will be a definite shift in just how much old world materials will be in demand.  Any new areas of sales will be a welcome companion to your wallet.

Keep your eye on the prize and a hand on your wallet.

Tips,  tricks and general suggestions are the bread and butter of what I write here.  Sometimes they are simple ideas and other times they are the advanced ideas that have a high risk/high reward scenario.

During all of the expansions, one of the most high risk ideas was the swap goods between auction houses.  Everyone has stories of late nights, spending time in Tanaris moving goods from the Alliance Auction House to the Horde auction house and vice versa.    With the heavy cut that occurred with selling goods between factions, it became very expensive.

With WOD it was announced that all of the auction houses would be combined between factions.  This is going to change the landscape for many cartels who made a lot of profit from selling to both auction houses.

Combined auction houses and how they will be implemented is still in limbo.  But the big change will be markets that are controlled by one or two cartel groups will have challengers from both sides of the faction line.  Some professions that are very volatile (Inscription, Alchemy) will end up being that much more challenging having to fight off indicators and players wanting to collapse markets.  But the pluses can easily outweigh the minuses.  For buyers it should open up rare items to become more available.  With the race to 100 and obtaining much in demand items this will open up more markets.

Learning the basics of Auction House management will become much more important once the Warlords Of Draenorexpansion opens the Dark Portal to traffic.

So what will be the hot product to have when the portal first opens?   Raw Materials will be in huge demand from the start.  Players wanting to spend gold to run their professions up to the maximum as fast as possible.

It will be interesting just where blue gear falls during the great auction changes coming.  Leveling has never been faster.   Especially if you have BOA gear purchased from previous characters.  Usually with a new expansion you get many new characters being leveled.  With the new boosted 90 status that many new players will be taking advantage of it will cut down on the need for players to buy leveling gear.

Much of the changes to how the auction house plays will be depending on the Horde/Alliance balance on a server.  A weak faction will become that much more run over financially when the auction houses are connected.  Some point during Warlords of Draenor all of the servers that are scheduled will be collected and the landscape of the ratio between Horde/Alliance will be told on each server.  A balanced faction level on a server will encourage action from multiple points instead of one faction dominating the others Auction Houses.

A simple change such as combining the Auction Houses,  where it may seem insignificant, can make drastic changes in how the next expansion will play out.  So be prepared for new competition and new challenges to putting gold in your pocket.

Good Luck and Good Profit Hunting

Grinding Gold Through The AH

Mommar here.

On some servers it was a barren wasteland as players ran to get the first few hits on their new gaming drug.

Others who weren't as fortunate to get beta invites tolled around the old world waiting for their new chance to get into the hallowed portal and take a wack at new content.

Everytime a new beta expansion is announced, there is a great shakeup with the Auction House.  It is the unofficial announcement that an expansion is slowly coming to an end.   Players start to drop out of their normal routines,  sales begin to dry up (as if they haven't already done this) and grinding out gold becomes a little bit more difficult.

There are still some great opportunities to sell items on the AH for profit.  But it takes a process of being selected not just on what you buy,  but also what is crafted and sold.  PVP gear is pretty much a dead business on many servers.    High Ticket crafted raiding gear is stumbling along at deep discounted prices.

So keep this in mind as you start to gear your mind towards the next two months of living la vida beta.  Look at your long term investments (raw materials from the different expansions) and the changes that are occurring as you look to square your books at the end of the expansion.

A couple of things were announced over the weekend that could affect how guilds are bought and sold.  Good money was on the table to buy/sell level 25 guilds.  With Warlords of Draenor there will no longer be guild leveling,  and many of the advantages of level 25 guilds will be already built into a guild.  So don't be surprised if you see guilds being sold in an attempt to profit on these changes.

Keep your head above water and look for those deals as players start to once again empty out their inventory.  Especially players who want to take a long hiatus from the game till the next expansion.  When purchasing a players 'guild inventory' keep in mind what you can sell now,  what can be sold later.  Before when buying a guild you also calculated the benefits of the level perks the guild has.  No longer is this really a consideration in buying the guild.  It ends up being a straight inventory swap for gold.   So don't be fooled by 'well you get all of these perks'.

Information is power and now is the time to flex those muscles you have learned over the past year.

Warlords of Draenor Beta: You Have Been Chosen

I was up late last night working on some unfinished business (which is code word for playing on Farmville 2) when I received an email from Blizzard.

The powers that be last night released the first wave of invites to the Beta Program for Warlords of Draenor.   With many of the expansions before this was a hot ticket to get.  Spawning many people selling their beta invites for both in game and real money.

But thankfully Blizzard changed how the they do invites where it is just a flip of the switch on someone's account to get into the beta program.

This unfortunately won't stop people from taking advantage of others in taking their accounts or their money.  With any of the WOW beta programs the con artists and scams come out of the woodwork.  So keep in mind that any site (other than the Blizzard site) that offers a beta key or access to the beta program if you send them your first born son is probably trying to steal your hard earned account.

At 2pm PST the gates to the beta server open up for the enjoyment of others.  I'm planning on taking the dive onto the beta servers to get a glimpse of my gaming life for the next two years.  Expecting an onslaught of players on the beta servers, there will be slowdowns and a lack of resources to pick up.

The other thing to keep in mind is to be entering the Beta servers with a plan.  Many players will want to get up to the highest levels they can as fast as possible.  Since from the start not all of content will be available,  it will still be a race to get as many quests as possible.

I have a lot of interest in how garrisons will play out and their impact on the professions.  Farming at Halfhill during WOW:  Mists of Pandaria gave a good preview of a system to open up different areas through quests and gold.  Garrisons and having a house of your own will be a big draw for not just your hard core player, but for the casual player who wants to show off their trophies and achievements.

The other interest I have as well is just how much of an effect, there will be on farming.  Many players will be able to obtain the materials they want through their upgraded garrisons.  This could cause a change in how many people are willing to pay for raw materials overall.  Sending your personal gathering force to obtain needed items/materials for a crafted item instead of paying large amounts of gold could deeply change the market.

So strap on the snacks and the soda intravenously.  Look at your email and see if you will be joining me on the beta servers.

Edit:   There were some codes passed on through some of the different events that Blizzard had booths.  This included PAX and some other events.  Most of these codes were non transferable.  Also 'official' connections such as WOWHEAD are offering codes in their contests.  Just keep in mind that no one is selling codes.  Keep an open eye on scams for codes in your email.

What I did on My WowCation

Mommar here.

If you noticed there was about a week's worth of silence from camp JMTC.  This was the week that I had decided I wanted to unplug from World of Warcraft to reset my mental buttons.

I ended up doing some reading (Go and read the Dresden Files).  Played a few games (Marvel Heroes mostly) and just relaxed with some movies.

Even as I was gone, I kept a basic eye on what was occurring with World of Warcraft.  There are enough sites out there that give keen insight on play styles,  Raiding achievements and even the occasional laugh.   So without logging in myself I could enjoy some aspects of WOW.

There were a few things that I did learn (or relearn) as I did my quick Wowcation.

1.   The grass may look greener on the other game.  But it still takes work to become good at it

2.   People will still ask you what you think of the warcraft expansion,  even in your church

3.   Having Warcraft dreams when you're on your vacation is just creepy.

4.   Garrosh is still a pain in the buns to drop Epics,  even if you are not playing

5.   That awesome mount you want,  but can't get to drop still haunts you.

6.   Friends on World of Warcraft still are amazing.

One of the reasons I had decided to unplug was just because I wanted a little bit of a break.  Sometimes the running name joke of calling it 'World of Farmcraft' is too accurate.  When everyday is the same schedule it can easily feel like a job.... With less pay.

So as you're looking to recharge your batteries between now and the opening of the portal to the Warlords of Draenor,  think how you want to spend your Wowcation.  Spending it with family?   With Friends?  With the Pet?  Or plotting world domination in 32 bit color?

Old Vs New: The Great Debate

Mommar here.

The Alpha client has hit the greedy hands of friends and family (bet you didn't know just how many friends that Blizzard employees did you?).

That leaves a great hole in the lives of gold makers.  Players are itching for the new content.  Once the beta starts arriving,  giving access to new content and new conquests,  Pandaland will become the 'old news' of the water cooler.

With information trickling including the cost of important items it's now even more important to be frugal with your purchases.  Garrisons will not be built in a day,  and they are going to cost a pretty gold piece.  Patterns ranging from 1000g to 5000g on the alpha servers.  That's a lot of gold for an
item that many players are going to want.

The closer we get to a beta client,  the more your time and money management will come into play.  By the time the beta rolls around, you should be looking to have all of your PVP gear sold as well as many of the items that won't carry over to the next expansion.

Now don't look at this as the rats deserting the ship.  You probably have at least a month or two months until the beta goes live.  Alpha shakes out a lot of the bugs and gives the developers a good taste of what is in drastic need of fixing.   But it does signal the changing interests of the normal player looking for the next big fix.

Right now I've been concentrating on selling Transmogrification items as well as items that enhance new gear.  Gems,  enchants and belt buckles.  Also continuing to keep my engineer burning their timers everyday for the Jard's Peculiar Energy Source to be able to craft the two pets now and during the next expansion.  There is a possibility that these as well as the other profession timers will not have a daily timer on them come the next expansion.  I just am hedging my bet in case it remains part of the normal Engineer daily rotation.

Bags are still selling out continually.  There is a logic to this.  Yes, you receive 4 bags when a player uses their boost up to 90.  But the bank still remains bagless.  So every 90 that is boosted retains the sales opportunity of 8 new bags.  That means keep 16 slot bags on the AH can get some continual profit into the coffers.  18 slot and higher bags are expensive and players are less likely to look to buy these bags for their banks.

Do not forget the specialized profession bags.  You have many players who are farming leather and herbs.  Leather especially is plentiful in the different zones and it is a royal pain to have to run over to a mailbox/vendor to dump your bags for the next round of farming.  36 slot Leatherworking or Enchanting bags should pick up as players revamp their toons into new gathering professions.

Opening of the Alpha client for Warlords of Draenor hasn't eliminated the possibility of sales.  But it does require a sharpening of your abilities and being quick witted the closer we get to the next expansion.

Discipline: The Most Hated Word in Gold Making

Mommar here.

Discipline is one of those words that brings memories to the forefront.  Whether it's talking about how your parents raised you,  or the need to control your actions and choices to reach a higher goal.

Since I don't know how your parents raised you,  nor do I really want to know I'm wanting to talk about the latter.  Fun toys all the time come up for sale or auction.  Players wanting to get rid of BOE pets,  gear,  transmogrification items tempt the best of Gold Goblins in spending their hard earned gold.

I was sitting on the Black Market Auction House deciding if I wanted to raise a big higher for an item I wanted.  This last week I was on a pet collecting march and one of the rare Trading Card Game pets came up.  The Banana Charm was up for bid,  with the price when I arrived at 21k.  That's a hefty amount of gold for a pet,  but I was in a spending mood plus it's an 80 dollar real money pet if you buy the card from ebay (or other sources).

So I sat there thumbing through the web while I waited for the auction to end.  I was outbid once,  twice (nope,  not three times a lady) by someone who obviously wanted this pet too.  I used all of my auction house techniques other than calling them bad names (they were Alliance) and then proceeded to make a decision.

I had enough gold I could drop a 100k bomb on them and knock them out pretty quickly.  But that is a seriously overpriced payment for a battle pet.  Or I could discipline myself into saying this is the amount I'm willing to pay and no more.  So mentally I set that price,  and then walked away.

As I logged on this morning I found myself the owner of a new Banana Charm and the pet that comes with it.  Frankly, it doesn't always happen like this.  Someone might want the item a little bit more than I do.  Items such as rare mounts tend to get a lot of interest and spirited bidding.  The key is to discipline yourself into knowing just what you want and what it is worth to you.  If you have higher plans for your gold (Spectral Tiger anyone) then you have to look at each purchase you make and how much that will delay your ability to reach your goal.

My Achilles heel is helping others.  I probably have given up a million gold simply by not charging my guildmates for items.  Giving materials that could be resold for bundles of gold is one of the simple pleasures I get out of life.  If I know you then I will probably help you.  But there is a limit to any generosity because I have plans of my own.  I have goals I would like to reach gold wise and purchases in the future that will be my next expectation.

So finding balance and discipline in every transaction goes to the heart of being a Gold Goblin.  Keep this in mind the next time you bid on your own Banana Charm.  Not just looking at it in how much gold your spending,  but how much time it will delay you from reaching your true epic expectations.

Crashing The Market

I was gluffing around Orgrimmar, getting ready to run through some old raids when an interesting chat discussion came along.

Paraphrasing,  two players were taunting someone else for a advertisement they had been barking for cheap glyphs.  In their advertisement they bluntly stated that they wanted to crash the inscription market to bring 'cheap glyphs to all'.

I had spoken about this before the first time that I watched an inscription market crash and burn.  Of all of the different markets, inscription is really the easiest to crash.   Herbs on many servers are at dirt cheap prices.  Being able to craft hundreds of glyphs,  listing them at inexpensive prices and still being able to net a small profit.

To crash any market you need to have a base amount of gold sitting unused.  Mostly because it would be impossible once someone has bought out your first round of glyphs to have that many herbs stockpiled.  I probably shouldn't say impossible but ultimately you will run out of raw material and either have to purchase extra or go and farm them.

A conglomerate of players would find crashing the market easier simply by one or two funneling the herbs into the scribe.  That way the scribe can be keeping the product artificially low.

Where morally crashing a market could be seen as reprehensible,  financially it can be a very strong strategy.  There are 150+ glyphs.  Only about 30 of those actually making a large amount of profit.  The others end up dribbling profits since they are not in high demand.    So let's say you take the 10 highest profitable glyphs.  You can live healthily off of those 10 glyphs and then crush the rest of the scribe market.  Many players run away from markets that aren't quick 'list and profit' type of markets.  This leaves only the die hard players who know how to fight back.

Ultimately a market will snap back simply because the planning on keeping the market artificially becomes boring.  Even the best of intentions will get someone only so far.  But the damage has been done when a player leaves the market for easier and more fertile ground.

With Warlords of Dradnor,  inscription is going to have some changes in different glyphs.  Many of the more powerful glyphs will be given to players in their book as they level.  New Glyphs will become important to players,  with the 'best set' of glyphs yet to be determined.

Don't let the chain rattling of someone determined to sew anarchy into the mix to remove you from the scribe market.  Look at how the scribe market has always reacted to incursions and be prepared.

Pet Battling For Profits

Every profession can make a profit.

This should have been written into your mantra from day one of your adventures in Azeroth.  We have talked about it many times how each profession can make some profit (yes even fishing and Engineering).

Even the quasi profession of Pet Battling can make a profit.    It just takes some planning and some time to rake up major gold.

I started off the Pet Battling profit making journey by leveling one of my pets to level 25.  The reason this is important is because you cannot add to your journal any level 25 pets that are purchased until you have hit level 25.  In this case I leveled up my Anubiseth Idol.  He dropped for me on one of my runs through Temple of Ahn'Qiraj.   Took me about 3 hours to level (I took my time over the weeks, so that would be three hours of actual pet battling time).  During this time I also added to my collection through the different leveling zones.

After he hit level 25 I picked up a couple of pets that I knew could be repackaged and sold.  When looking for the future captives of other battlers I wanted the more rare pets that people weren't stacking on the AH.  This cut out a lot of the holiday pets and easily purchased pets.  I decided to power level my Ghostly Skull (found in the Dalaran sewers).   While power leveling him from level 1 I dropped in one of my higher level pets to protect just in case there were issues with taking on the wrong type of pet.

Leveling Bobtheskull (yep,  that's what I named him) took about an hour and a half.  The basic idea is to throw him quickly into the ball from the start,  let him have one round (and make sure he survives) then drop the hammer for one of the higher leveled pets.  After you win all of the pets that are used in combat receive the XP (and any bonus XP for the pet being a higher level).

Profiting with Bobtheskull is where you have to learn the way your server works.  If you have a strong pet battling group then you can drop your newly minted level 25 on the market for the going rate plus a premium for the time it took to level your toon.  The more rare the pet is,  the higher the sales price the pet should be put in.  So a pet such as Lil' Bad Wolf from Karazhan should be placed at a higher cost than one that can be purchased and sold quickly.

There are two paths you can take when selling your pets.   You can go for the quick turnover on sales.  If it takes your pets an Avg of an hour of game time to level and you sell them quickly then you are filling the need quickly.  The problem with this theory is that there is a limited amount of players willing to pay for higher level pets.  Once that quota is full (the ones that actually have the money to spend on a luxury item) then the sales will dry up.

The other thought process is to make sure that the pet is going for a higher price.  Even at 10x the sales cost of a lower level pet.  This will put a higher profit in your pocket and still keep the demand intact.  Basic sales technique says that if your item is continually out of stock then you raise the price to meet the demand.

You can expand these ideas to your farming for those that one an extra type of income.  Paying a premium for your farming group for resellable pets can allow you to keep a different revenue stream together without tying up all of your time.  The important thing is to keep an eye on how your pet sales market is functioning.   A poor pet battling server can have you placing highly profitable pets on the market and having to list them time and time again.  A strong market can allow you to resell pets and even look at flipping pets that are listed by unaware sellers of their value.

Expanding your profit pyramid into Pet Battle sales can give you another road to profit as your other professions begun to wind down with the end of the Mists of Pandaria expansion

Prime Time Professions

Mommar here.

Get ready for a big shock.

Professions and crafting is one of the major backbone elements to your gold fortune.   Okay,  so it isn't that big of a shock.  The basic tenant is that if you don't craft you don't make gold.

I've shown over the months of talking to you that you could technically make gold without ever needing a crafting profession.  Between questing,  gathering and reselling you can make a large amount of gold.  Add onto this a network of crafters you can request items to be made and resold you never have to have a crafting profession of your own.

But then a man with a bad leg could technically walk around without a crutch.  It will be slow,  tedious and painful, but it is possible.   Every so often the popular question is 'what is the best gold making profession?".  It could easily be on repeat for every time it is spoken in forums and in game.  Players want to know what profession to jump to making their small fortune.

But choosing that first profession is a personal choice.  Three rules that I set up when I tell anyone what profession they should choose.

1)   Choose a profession that looks beneficial to your character.

A freshly laundered Druid will get more benefits out of having a Leatherworker/Skinner than they will have a Blacksmith.  The same for a warrior running around with the tailoring profession.  This doesn't mean that you shouldn't ever have a profession that seems odd for the class,  but as a first profession look at what will be the most beneficial.

2)  Do not choose a crafting profession till you are close to the maximum level of the expansion pack.

I have always believed that the first two professions a player should take are gathering professions.  Mining/Herbalism/Skinning are all very strong base professions to have when you look to start building a gold fortune.  With the benefits of receiving experience points with each gathering node/skinning mob you get, the quicker leveling opportunities along with sales.

3)   Market conditions can tell a lot about what professions to choose.

Just looking at the market and seeing what sells will answer a lot of questions on the best profession that you take.  This is affected, especially if you have someone teaching you the ropes on what to sell and where to sell it.  Most players do not have a guru sitting around with them helping them to not make mistakes their first time out.  Looking at the conditions of the market should tell you what will be the best items to sell from the crafting professions.

4)  Have fun

The biggest item when choosing that first profession is to choose one that you will have fun with.  Even with the removal of profession quests there is a certain amount of enjoyment of crafting that plate item to strut around your home city to wear.  That uber awesome sword that people go ooo and ahh about.   Or just simply flexing your crafting muscle to raise your ilvl gear to shock and awe factor.  Making gold with professions, isn't just about putting items on the Auction House to sell.  Making gold becomes a new profession in itself.  If you are not having fun doing it,  then you will slowly drift away.

Keep in mind that choosing that first profession is a personal choice.  Everyone has an opinion about what to choose the same as everyone has a... well you know the rest of that saying.   Choosing your own profession path and your reasoning behind it is why every character is different, unique and enjoyable to come back to time and time again.
