The Professions Race To 87

Mommar Here.

Many new players to the gold goblin game are having to change their strategy when it comes to making gold.   The tried and true methods,   flipping entry level armor,  BOA enchants,  Bags,  and many others are slowly working their way up to profitable levels.

But Mists of Pandaria profession changes have made it nearly impossible to maximize any of the professions without obtaining a hallway pass into the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.   This is where the PVP patterns and epic patterns are now housed for the Tailoring,  Blacksmithing,  and Leatherworking.  Jewelcrafting has its own hurdles to be able to maximize its profit potential.

With the abundance of materials on the auction house market,  and the obtain access to the higher level profession recipes,  it has changed the shift in mentality from worrying about crafting to leveling alternate crafters first.  This definitely evens out the playing field for crafters.  But it is making it that much more important to level their crafters up to the magic level of 87.

The biggest challenge to gold goblins will be time management.   It's difficult to decide whether to level the Jewelcrafter or the Leatherworker.   And even after 87 will it become that much more important to level non raiding toons beyond 87?   The biggest question is how will this play out later on?   How will this play out in future patches?

The other question with materials being so abundant is will that drive down the prices to may of the medium level items crafted?   Players made legendary amounts of gold just from selling PVP blue armor.  The patterns have been easily available during Wrath with just needing to use self crafted items.  With Mists of Pandaria players will need to farm Mote of Harmony to create Spirits of Harmony on their own.   With the Motes of Harmony will Bind on Pickup,  a crafter can no longer just purchase the currency from the AH.

So players will have to both level up to at least 87 and farm for Motes of Harmony to be at the top of their gold goblin game.   Not impossible,  but definitely puts a change in many players leveling strategy.

These changes make gold making challenging for long term crafters.   It will be interesting if any of these changes with the next patch.  Until then,  be prepared to level up both your mains and your alts in your personal cartel to be on the cutting edge of gold making prestige.

Junk In The Trunk

This weekend I started to level one of the Pandarian Monks.   Needless to say it was an interesting experience.

As I was leveling I could not stop but look at the scenery and the time that had been taken to craft the area.  The music was excellent and everything looked smooth.   But if you hate running from place to place then this these opening levels are going to drive you insane.

This will be my 12th character I will level,  and I have never had to run from one quest spot to another that much.   Many times you start and do one quest,  run upstairs and on a road to another quest,  only to backtrack to turn in the quest.   All the while mobs might end up attacking you on the road.  Nothing like a friend on Skype saying 'get these *^%&*ng monkeys off of me' to make you bust out laughing.

Which is something that I don't always get to enjoy.  I have always been able to level characters both
old and new on my own.  But the group experience is one that can be enjoyed tremendously when leveling.   Especially with being able to share funny comments and making sure of each others progress.   Many comments were made about the proportions of our pandas and the 'junk in the trunk' that the female pandas have as they are running.

Warcraft isn't just about making gold.   Especially when there is little if no opportunity in the first 20 quests.  With the way that the opening Pandarian zone is set up there is no auction house. There are no mailboxes allowing sending extra items  to one of your higher level toons as well.   You can level your professions (I choose my standard mining and skinning) but with a serious lack of bag space at the start it can be difficult to keep track of items.

It's a pure leveling experience from the start.   And those that give it a try will find something different. And to me something brilliant when it comes to what Mists of Pandaria can be.  For all the problems that people have run into and have shown their disappointment.  Roll a Panda,  and enjoy some of the best storytelling that Blizzard has to offer.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Blizzard Technical Support Needs Your Help

Mommar here.

A long time ago in a far far galaxy called Iowa,  I worked for a phone bank company.   My job was to
take incoming calls about phone difficulties people were having with a specific long distance carrier.  Not revealing the name of the company,  we shall call it's initials ICM.

I would spend day after day in the call center answering questions,   looking at people's accounts and trying to troubleshoot issues.  Many of these issues were simple in nature.  Amazingly people do not always understand that if you do not pay your bill,  your phone gets turned off.  But that's not important.

The new expansion Mists of Pandaria has been released.  And this is the first weekend that casual players will be loading up their game,  and started to play.  Or starting to hiss and curse at their computers in frustration with too slow of frame rates,  no sound,  no pandas and definitely no fun.   It's a common occurrence with a new piece of software.   If you have ever worked in the software field,  they are not called bugs but undocumented features.

So how can the lowly players who are able to log on without any type of issues help Blizzard.   To be honest, your not truly helping Blizzard but your fellow gamers.   Problems,  bugs,  difficulties and 'undocumented features' always occur.   But the best answers,  and many times the quickest answers are found on the Warcraft forums as well as other user dominated forums.   The Consortium forums also have a good tech section on how to solve basic issues.

Now,   this is not assuming that people haven't tried to find out.   It's definitely not a condemnation of players who call the Blizzard tech support for answers.   They get paid (and paid well) for what they do. But many times their phone lines get filled with questions that can be solved without any technical issues.   And that causes problems for the people with issues that do require Blizzard tech support to step in and help.

So how as gold goblins can we help?    Time is money in our motto.  And sometimes just offering to go to the website and see if we might not have suggestions or answers to these problems.   It is easy to just let players go on their own.  But after 8+ years of gaming,   World of Warcraft is not just a game but it's a community that we build,  or let fall on it's own.   So stepping up and answering a few questions will indwell you into the community.  And you never know when you might need to lean on that knowledge to obtain an answer for your own game problems.

Answer and solutions to questions might not bring actual gold into our pocket.   But knowledge of knowing you helped someone can bring some gold into your soul.

Good Luck and Good Hunting.

I Bought My Gear On Ebay

When the black market auction house concept was introduced with Mists of Pandaria.   Players drooled at the possibility of obtaining rare or impossible items.  Items that were no longer available in game.   This was the driving force for the idea of the BMAH and how valuable it could be.

As I was finally arriving to the drooling masses standing in front of Madam Goya I noticed something very peculiar.   There were some very powerful items on the BMAH.   Articulated Legplates(heroic) and Fragment of Fear Made Flesh (heroic).   This was very strange because these were both 509 level items that only dropped in heroic raids.

Where I am fine with the idea of making gear available to the casual player with the raid finger.   The idea of being able to plunk 20,000 gold and be decked in a Heroic only item doesn't sit well.   At least not this early in the expansion.  Later when raids start to become farmed by the majority of guilds,  there are always advertisements for 5,000 or 10,000 join in groups with a guarantee item drop.

My biggest concern is that this will shorten the length of the discovery time that the first part of the Mists of Pandaria expansion holds.   The initial expansion and subsequent patches have a standard shelf life of interest to players.   After that shelf life has expired they begin to get anxious for the next content patch.   With more and more powerful armor becoming available,  tactics will become less and less important and pure bull power will get them through dungeons and raids.

Everyone has been on a raid that contained at least one person you would swear purchased their character on amazon.   They had no idea on how to use their characters talents and abilities.   They were carried through the entire raid (with even the healer doing more DPS).  The taunts of 'did you buy your toon from Ebay ringing through group and raid chat.   Now it seems that Ebay might be losing business because if it only takes a few thousand gold to purchase high level gear.  It does not bode well to the raiding community who have earned their gear through hard work and teamwork.

Now granted,  it will be very time consuming to gear your toon through the black market auction house.  But even two to three pieces can raise an inadequate player into a high enough ilvl to get them into a raid finder group.

Hopefully Blizzard developers will remain vigiliant and make sure that these items are limited to a few and not flooding the BMAH market.  Otherwise this concept will be another nail in the coffin of World of Warcraft.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Time Is Money Brewfest Edition

One of the things that I find for holidays and events is to make sure that I'm using my time as wisely
as possible.   With the different quests that are available on the first day,  as well as continuing days
of Brewfest.   So finding the fastest method to get quests done is very important.

One of these quests is the There and Back Again Daily that's just outside of Brewfest central.

The entire quest is timed to get as many trips to and from the barrel holders and back.  Each time you complete the quest you receive the Brewfest Tickets.   Last year they changed the route so that it is
no longer a straight line but curves along the pathway.

If your wanting to cut some corners.   There are a couple of different paths that can be taken.
One is to wrap just under the Dranosh'ar  Blockade area.   You can cut along the hill and up a little bit giving you about 2-3 seconds of extra time against running around the building entirely along the normal road path.

Brewfest path 1

I usually avoid jumping through the tables themselves because if I mistime the jump my
momentum stops and it doesn't save time)

Brewfest Path Part 2

After this turn you want to line yourself up to run right along the Apple Barrels to reset the
exhaustion timer for the mount.   It's important to rub right up next to it or even jump along it.
Some players have been reporting that the collision detection is not the greatest.   If you miss this
barrel then you will want to swing behind the barrel thrower to use that apple barrel to rest your
timer.

Brewfest Patch Part 3

If you reset your timer on the way across via the apple barrel then you should be able to turn around
just right in front of the barrel thrower.  He will launch the barrel and it will follow you even if your running away from him.  (A personal mini game I will play is to see just how far I can get before the
barrel catches me).

Brewfest Path Part 4

Once you have everything lined up just retrace your steps back,  and go around the back of the
delivery tent to use the apple barrel there (your timer does not reset after delivery of the barrel).

Map Overview

My suggestion would be to try this path a few times without the need of the timer on a ground mount
to get acclimated to the fastest way to get there and back.   Hopefully this short of a route can add 4-6 more deliveries to your quest than the normal road path.

There are more shortcuts to your routes for Brewfest.   Cutting down the time to do dailies will allow you more time to level your characters and enjoy the other non quest play that is the Brewfest holiday.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Brewfest 2012:

Ziggy Ziggy Ziggy Oi Oi Oi.

So I got started a little early with Brewfest.   But stopped by to talk a little bit about one of my favorite World of Warcraft Holidays.   Brewfest 2012.

Unfortunately this year this holiday is coming right after the introduction of the Mists of Pandaria expansion.  The Boss battle with Coren Direbrew is set at level 90,  with needing to be level 89 to get into the fun.   The loot table is basically the same as it has been every year (upgraded name,  upgraded statistics)

Bitterest Balebrew Charm

Bubbliest Brightbrew Charm

Thousand-Year Pickled Egg

Brawler's Statue

Coren's Cold Chromium Coaster

Mithril Wristwatch

The interesting part of this whole event gold wise is going to be the two pets.

Pint Sized Pink Pachyderm

Wolpertingers Tankard

Both can be purchased with tokens,   Both are Battle Pets and tradeable.   This will be the first time that you can trade/enchange these as caged pets.  So even after you have all of your needed tokens for the achievement you still can use the extra tokens for pet sales.

With the limited amount of players on many servers at level 89-90 I won't be surprised about long waits.  Perhaps a good opportunity to sale your 'services' as a tank or healer is possible.  Don't be in a hurry to  disband a group immediately.  Players at the start of the holiday will want to get their specific class item so they are more than willing to run the Coren Direbrew boss 2 or more times before it drops.

Wowinsider.com has an awesome write up on all the events including boss strategy.   Jump over there and take a look at what they have to say.  With new upgrades comes new demands for enchants for weapons.   Enchanters should be looking to quickly get their business cranked up (unfortunately the Direbrew items aren't DE for easy materials).

This is always a fun holiday for me.   Hopefully everyone will have fun with it,  as well as continue their leveling and selling.

Good Luck and Good Drinking

p.s.   Sorry about the title for yesterday's entry.   Not sure how that one made it pass the goalie.

Slow Markets Do Not Mean No Markets

Mists of Pandaria have been a mixed bag for Gold Goblins.   Some that have kept to basic strategies have been raking in large amounts of gold on some servers.  Other Gold Goblins are struggling to keep above the shoreline with their fortunes.

The key to any fortune is to know timing and why things happen.   Jewelcrafting took a major hit with the lack of a viable Jewelcrafting shuffle.  But the Jewelcrafting market will continue to lead the way in the long run.

This weekend will tell a lot of what occurs in the rest of the expansion.  Many players will be getting
their first taste of Pandarian cooking.   Casual players that only play on the weekend will load up the
expansion and get to enjoy the green grass of a new home.

There are still places to make money with Pandaria.   Flipping profession items will still contain a lot of
unfound gold.   Very few have reached the BMAH on servers,  and even fewer have reached raid status
where enchants and Jewelcrafting cuts will kick into being highly prized looks.

The Gathering professions will continually make the most constant income in the next few days.  With
Brewfest here there will be many distractions to play with.   Keeping your eye on the prize and leveling
while maintaining your gold making strategies will keep your Warcraft business advancing.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Easy Money From Skinning in MOP

Wild Bill Mommar Here.

The cardinal rule of being a gold goblin is that everything sells.   This  is the basis of what many others and I have created our fortunes upon.   Never has this been as obvious as in the opening zones of Mists of Pandaria.

Last night I started my number one farmer to work.   She is a Skinner/Miner with decent gear,  so I had no problem blowing through most of the mobs in the area.   The part that I was noticing was that in the opening area just outside the temple:

Here was a plethora of mobs to kill and skin.  Many of the Sha-Infested Prowlers in this area have a heavy repop rate.   Being a member of a level 25 guild and the Bountiful Bags Perk I ended up with about 15 stacks of Sha-Touched Leather in my bags for less than an hours worth of work.

One of the reasons this area is very profitable for skinners is that many players don't have the skinning ability so they will end up leaving unskinned mobs in this area.   There was some bad with the good in this area.   It ended up where many of the corpses were unable to be skinned because players did not loot after they had been killed.

Also as your skinning in this (and other areas) there is the opportunity for Plump Intestines to drop.  These seem to contain bonus coins from 1-2g (similar to the Strange Bloated Stomach that was skinned in Twilight Highlands.).

As a skinner spending some time in these small profitable areas for materials can be beneficial.  Later on there will be less need to farm the Mists of Pandaria version of scraps for full pieces of leather.  But with the market being hungry for anything necessary to level professions,  getting these onto the market can be very profitable.

Good Luck and Good Skinning (and loot your mobs)

Warcraft Harvest Festival: Whats it good for?

A quest hung over Mommar here.

Sometimes holidays just roll in with no fanfare because it's overshadowed by other events.   My family goes through this every year.  One of my parents has their birthday the same month as Christmas.  In fact it's 2 days before Christmas.   So you can imagine that for convenience any type of party we have ends up being combined with tinsel and Christmas trees.

The same thing happened this week with the World of Warcraft Harvest Festival being overshadowed by the Starting of the Mists of Pandaria Expansion.  This isn't a great loss because the Harvest Festival does not have many quests or rewards connected to it.  No Boss battles per day to take on,  and you only have to travel to Felwood to deliver a package for the Honoring a Hero Quest.

But the interesting thing about these events is that where a Gold Goblin might not be able to always make direct money with them.   The opportunity to save money with them does exist.   When you complete the quest line you receive a gift in the mail.   The Bounty Of The Harvest is a food generator that can be used by that character (both the gift and the items crafted are Bind on Pickup).

I have always been open to the idea of being a packrat of sorts.   I very rarely throw something useful away.   So as I was travelling on one of my characters into Pandaland,  I noticed I had a Winter Veil Cookie in my bag.   If you never picked this up you remember that the old text had a 3% health/mana recovery and raising in stats.

(this is the level 55 new version).

The Level 85 version gives 99000 Health/Mana over 30 seconds plus 27 to all statistics.  Not a bad heft for a free item that most people throw away.

During the Harvest Festival you receive inside your Bounty of the Harvest gift:

Harvest Boar

Harvest Bread

Harvest Fish

Harvest Nectar

Where these are not as powerful as the Winter Veil Cookie they can save the ire of your Mage when you continually have to ask them for water or food.

This takes a relatively inconsequential holiday into something that ends up being viable for Gold Goblins
as they continue on their trip through Mists of Pandaria and farther.   With Brewfest upcoming in the
this week,  take a second look at all those "worthless" food items and look at your long range goals.
Saving money to a Gold Goblin is just as good as making money.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Leveling professions - Easysauce

Hello.  My name is Johnny Cash.

Ok,  so it's not Johnny.  But you have to admit he has an awesome name to use for an intro.

Veterans of World of Warcraft will reminisce about the good old days of earlier expansions.   Sometimes you will also hear the war stories of players who were with the original launch of the game years ago.

Even todays players who play the game between expansions will talk about the changes and the 'good ole days' of the expansion gaming when they started.  One of the most significant changes has been professions and how they are leveled.

The profession level and difficulty has become increasingly less and less with each expansion.

Vanilla Wow  - 1-300
Burning Crusade 300-375
Wrath of the Lich King  375-450
Cataclysm   450- 525
Mists of Pandaria  525-600

Each profession has added certain quirks for leveling (Cataclysm was the first one that required to open up a higher level zone to complete profession leveling).   But as the changes occurred,  it seems that the material needs to maximize profession points have decreased.

Take for instance Blacksmithing.   Using Kaliope's guide you need 12.5 bars of Ghost Iron and 1 spirit of Harmony.  Also included in this is the need to open of the Vale of the Eternal Blossoms  at 87 to purchase the PVP recipes.   This is the same mechanic that was used with the Cataclysm expansion to keep players from just sitting in a home zone and maximizing professions.

So what does this mean for Gold Goblins?   The easier that leveling a profession becomes,  the quicker that the profession can become viable for high end sales (PVP armor,  Epic Crafted items etc).   The other side of the goblin coin is that it makes for more competition.   Jewelcrafting when it first started was a rich goblins game.   Players had to invest a large amount of gold from the start to be viable in the market.  Now it has become much easier to be swimming in jewels and money.

So selection of markets based on the server needs becomes very important for your own personal cartel.
Looking at the auction house and seeing what items are listed can give you a good idea of what
professions have already become flooded.    If Jewelcrafters exist everywhere with overstocked items
on the auction house.  Look to maybe level your Blacksmith or Leatherworker.  In 2 to 3 weeks many
players will be looking to start PVPing.  And all of those will need starter PVP gear.   Perhaps you have
a stronger raiding community that needs to have potions and flasks at the ready.

Basing what profession to level is necessary to be maximizing your personal cartel profit lines.  A short
look at what is needed server wide can place more gold in your greedy goblin pockets.

Good Luck and Good Hunting
