A school principle of mine used to tell his students 'I'm perfect,  I don't make mistrakes'.  When your 12 years old this is way too thought provoking.  But as I've become older I can see the wisdom in what he was trying to impart.

This weekend I took a look at a couple of weak markets and decided to flip them.  I grabbed 32 Magnificent Hides at an average of 125 per hide.  With the daily burn for leatherworkers and the glut of exotic leather sitting on the AH, to me these were still undervalues.  I double checked some of the bigger ticket items that were created by them (Angerhide Leg Armor,  Shadowleather Leg Armor) which were hovering at about 550 per.  This could turn a nice quick profit and set me up for future profits.  Along with listing some of the leg armors I also went ahead and tripled the cost of the Magnificent Hide themselves and dropped them on the AH.

Dropping in a couple of hours later I had sold three of the leg armors, but all of my relisted magnificent hides had been undercut almost immediate.  The undercuts had dropped them to even lower costs to what I had purchased the original batch.

Wait Mommar,  you're saying all of this was a mistake?   In one way of looking at it it was a mistake in that I did not take into my mental calculations the cost of the exotic leather itself.  Also not taken into respect was just how many Magnificent Hides that leatherworkers were still sitting on.   So instead of calling it a mistake let us call it a half win.  In the long term I will be able to get about 2x the amount of gold that I invested.

The other market I took a look at and decided to reset was the bag market.  Netherweave bags had been a hotbed of sales for me.  Usually, clicking to 500g a day in sales just from the stock I still had sitting in my bank.  Recently the market had dropped to 12g a piece (still profitable, but not so much that I was willing to again list some bags).  I looked at some other bags (the 24 slot bags crafted from higher level tailoring materials).  The Illusionary Bag and Royal Satchel will be strong come the next expansion.  Players get the automatic 4 x 24 bags with their new level 90, but they have 8 slots in their bank to fill with new shiny bags.  Most will buy 16 slot bags but some will spring for a couple of the 24 slot bags for their new toys.

Both the Illusionary Bag and Royal Satchel have tailored daily timers using Dreamcloth and Imperial Silk respectively.  Dreamcloth is on a weekly timer while Imperial Silk still sits at a daily timer.  Collecting the materials and taking a few minutes to craft and sell these have added some nice coin into my pocket.

What may seem like a mistake at first can be turned into a success just from taking a deep breath and seeing potential instead of just instant profit.  Time is gold and gold is time.  Both will happen if your patient and look at not just short term sales but long term sales.

Growing up I used to sneak in and read my brothers comics.  My money went into other items that I wanted (usually involving too much sweets).   He liked buying comic books and reading them over and over again.   They still sit in my parents' closet in need of being bagged and boarded.

One of both of our favorite series was the 'What if' versions that both Marvel Comics and DC had.  They would ask the obvious question for the title 'What if'.  What if Wolverine had forks on his finger.  What if Superman had a cold vision.  Things that were good, sometimes for a laugh or a quick adventure.

Diablo 3 got my mind to thinking of what if World of Warcraft did not have an auction house.  The introduction of the Auction house in Diablo,  including the real money auction house changed the scope of the game.  It made the need for massive amounts of gold almost required to be able to play at a high level.  Gold ended up costing more and more, both in real money and time as players tried to get the best gear.  If it didn't drop or couldn't be crafted then you just went out and bought for obscene amounts of money.  Sound familiar in regards to our friendly beloved WOW?

But what truly happened if the WOW auction house didn't exist?  Or it limited to only trinket items and the occasional non equipment.  Could a game survive in that type of atmosphere?   Diablo has become a game more for the materials than the actual gold.  You can make a large amount of gold in finding different places to farm.  Selling unused equipment is also available.  But for the most part gold becomes a non factor in playing Diablo 3.  Would the same occur with World of Warcraft where gold was only used for vanity items and not necessary for gameplay?

Do not take this as me being a proponent of removing the Auction House from the game.   There is a large difference in the raid/progression style play that Warcraft has against the pick up and beat something down style that is Diablo 3.  But sometimes it is a good thing to take a look at why something is important to learn how to master.

The Warcraft auction house doesn't just give you access to high quality weapons, but also to high equality enhancements.  It also gives you an opportunity to sell those enhancements and items to others.  Diablo 3 anymore, only allows you to take care of your own personal needs.  Both games, share a repair cost,  with the high the equipment levels you have the higher the repair cost.  Both hold legendary items,  though against some popular raid beliefs they aren't just handed to you in Warcraft.

The final thing to look at for where the auction house in Warcraft differs than from Diablo is that you have the option of playing it or not.   This may seem like a counterproductive idea vs what I said earlier.  But with dailies,  questing and vendoring items, as a player you do not have to step anywhere near the auction house for your day to day expenses.  But to be the very best player,  even a little bit of auction house ability can put you farther up the food chain game wise than others.  Especially at the beginning of patches where access to high level patterns are limited.

So take a look at your patterns in the Auction House and imagine yourself without access to the sales or the purchase ability.  Respect can lead to mastery of something that is necessary for your playstyle.

Having been playing World of Warcraft for years,  I have developed little quirks about myself.  One of them is when something finally drops when I have worked for it.

Since the start of the Timeless Isle patch I have been working the rare mob Houlon to have her drop the Reigns Of The Thundering Jade Cloud Serpent.  Having read in one of the Blizzard notes that you were only guaranteed a loot drop once each day from rares (yes,  I know it's possible to get more but they said guarantee),  I had been farming her every day.  Each time I was on the isle and the timer came up I joined 10-30 of my favorite strangers for the quick 2 minute kill and loot.

Finally the mental trumpets played and wallah,  I see in the loot window my next pet.  Being excited I added it to my collection,  dragged it onto my tool bar with some other mounts and then found out that you can't fly it on Timeless Isle.  Really, Blizzard?  Had to get that one final tease in didn't you.

But putting that aside, I started looking for my weekly Garrosh runs.  My hunter has an easier time of getting a better run than my Warrior does.  I would probably link it to Melee DPS being less popular than Ranged DPS or just blind luck.  Either way a couple of weeks ago, my Warrior had obtained his uber mega blade of awesome;  Hellscreams Decapitator.  In my own mental battle my hunter was getting a little bit jealous of him lugging that big shaving axe and wanted her own new BOA toy.

After finishing the first two bosses in one shot (hitting 3 and 4 on the dps respectively) we approached Hellscream.   The first try got him down to 12 percent before the fickle finger of fate disconnected a healer and a tank.   We regrouped,  no one started with the great noob debate and we went after him a second try.  Finally he went down,  and the loot window popped up and there it was:

After doing a little bit of a happy dance in front of my computer (thankfully not having the camera on at the time) I zipped over to my jewelcrafter/engineer to get the enhancements done.   Two Delicate gems and a Lord Blastington's Scope of blowing things up and I was set for the next adventure.

But then I ran into a problem.  What was next?   I work better with a goal in mind.  Both of my main raiders now have their epic capes.  They are both exalted with the Grand Pooba of the isle.  My Warrior is exalted with everyone except for the furry little tribe in la la land.  I have all the coins that I could want,  and all of the gold I really can want (I know.  Blasphemy).  So what's next in the land of Mommar?

Do I make more gold.   Well of course I do.  That's half the fun.   Do I try to go for a 3rd epic cape.  Absolutely not.  No more grinding stones and lost information and you can go find that stuff yourself you little toad dragon.  Do I continue to raid and even look to jump into some regular runs instead of flex raid runs?

There is always a question of what motivates someone to continue to strive to play this game.  The next 6 months some people will decide to take some time off.  Some players will go and continue to work on their game.  Some are playing with new boosted level 90's.  Some are even leveling toons the normal way for a challenge.

So many things that can be done.  So many motivations that still are out there for the picking.  Archaeology looks like it might need to be dusted off and played with some more.  Pet battling (gotta catch em all, POKEWOW).

But one day,  one glorious day I got to run naked through the main horde cities on my new mount with my new weapon in my hand.

This is my weapon,  this is my gun.   This is for.... What you should join the military to hear the rest

It happens to everyone.   At some point the day will come when you hit that edge of hearing the same repetitive words over and over.  Whether it is your little sister telling you to wake up,  your parents telling you to go mow the lawn.  It will happen to you at some time in your life.

To set the scene,  I believe in being helpful in World of Warcraft.  You will not see me running around places jumping up and down like a hyperactive chichuaua looking to do good deeds.  But if I'm running past someone who is killing a mob I will take a few steps back and help out.  Usually a wave is thrown in my direction or a thank you.  Not a big deal but if it helps someone I score one in the win column.

One of the ways many people on servers is answer simple questions over the trade channels.   This happens especially when it comes to the rare monsters that pop up on Timeless isle.  Chants of 'when is Houlon', 'Timer on Houlon' etc happen all the time.  A quick answer is given and everyone moves on.

But occasionally you get one person that seems incapable of looking up anything.  For the next two hours you hear questions like 'Is there any rare up'.  'Where is [Insert Timeless Isle Rare]' or my favorite one of the bunch 'Please wait for me'.   Patience still kicks into the game play that answering these questions are easily answered, even if they become monotonous.

This weekend where I had to draw the line was arguments that happened when it came to some answers that I 'helped' with this weekend.  One of them started with the timer on Houlon.  I had helped with the kill on my hunter and was running to finish up some of my dailies.  If you have looked up Houlon on Wowhead you know there are three spawn points that she can pop up at.  The most common spawn pop is just past the bridge on the upper side of the hill.  But occasionally she will spawn further up the hill or even all the way past the second bridge.  In this case she popped on the first spawn point, but wasn't tagged.  So she popped up at the second spawn point and was engaged.  After the kill a player asked 10 minutes later about what the timer was on Houlon.  Trying to be helpful I told them that she had already showed up and was killed.  For some reason the person proceeded to try to argue with me that I hadn't killed her and that they had been at the spawn point all the time.  Then explaining that there are still three spawn points they responded with 'I know where she spawns.  Obviously they didn't cause if they did, they wouldn't have been griping about waiting for her.  Sometimes you just cannot win and it is better to retire from the field of stupid and do other things with your game time.

The other event that proved to me that there is a special brand of stupid was the incessant amount of questions there were about where rare mobs were.  I use an add-on called rare coordinator to keep track of timers on the island.  When a rare is announced on the add-on coordinates are also included in where the rate is.  Some of them, such as the Emerald Gander, can only give general area directions.   Most players get the coordinates and hopefully they are close enough to get there and get a tag on the mob.   But occasionally people miss their chance and have to wait til the next round.  What ground I was the complaining that no one waited for them to arrive.  No one waited for them to be escorted to the promise land of the rares and let them get the first shot.   Coming off as a requirement that everyone should help them to obtain all their goals, including the mount form Houlon because they had just arrived on the island.  The answer to this is a resounding NO.   No one truly owes anything, anything other than to let them figure it out themselves.  When people take their time to help,  be nice and say thank you.  Otherwise, there are information websites such as wowhead and mmo-champion that can give 90% of the answers.  Expecting someone to walk you through everything is insane.  Not being grateful for the help that people offer and complaining just gets other to shut up and leave you to your own ignorance.

Not everything is bad with helping.  But sometimes helping is to let people swim in the deep in for a bit til they learn to at least float.

This weekend will be the first weekend that cross realm raiding will allow players to get grouped into Normal and Heroic raids for SOO.   Blizzard got this feature into the system with the latest hotfix.

No one should argue with the idea that cross realm raiding for flex has sparked a large amount of players to continue playing with the last tier in the Mists of Pandaria.  With the inclusion of the queue add-on into rotation on many raiders system,  the door has been opened to a large amount of pick up groups being successful in their search for vengeance against Garrosh.

The one problem I can see with opening up Normal and Heroic Raiding into the cross realm area is the high possibility of expectation to be 'carried' through content.  This already occurs in Flex runs where one or two players are undergeared or not as capable as they should be.  This is mitigated by many players having a higher and higher impact with upgraded gear.  Where being carried in the earlier SOO flexes (flex 1 and flex 2) isn't as important,  getting up to a Garrosh encounter with players doing sub par 100k dps can be the difference between success and the long run back to grab your ghost.

There has been a sharp decline in population on many servers with players starting to drift off at the end of the expansion.  With the knowledge that there is another 4-5 months of Mists of Pandaria content to be played, players are looking at other games for entertainment.  The new Diablo 3 expansion, opening up next week as well as other MMO's opening their doors to entice players away from their Azerothian adventures.

But Cross realm raiding should open up some markets to players looking to enhance their new shiny gear.   Watching Oqueue there was not a large amount of changes of people searching for Normal/Heroic runs during the week.  This weekend will tell whether players still keep their Guild runs in house or look outside for help to fill the gaps that exist in their raiding schedule.

Keeping your eyes open for the markets that get a spark can add gold into your pockets and some sales onto your ledger.   Being prepared with quality enchants and enhancements can put you farther in the game.

I have been a collector for years of specific items.   Started out with Baseball cards during the 80's and beyond.  Moved onto coins and other odds and ends.  Always have had a passion for Dragons and buying dragon type of items.  

One of the things that drives my collection is simply one axiom.  It's worth what I was willing to pay for it.  The same ideal applies to price items in your WOW selling structure.  Each server is different in what prices they are willing to pay for certain items.   A PVP server is more willing to pay for PVP based gear than a PVE server.  Low population servers will pay for higher level gear because they are unable to obtain the drops consistently in raids and instances.   Servers with a large player base will have higher prices for specialty items and lower expectations for raw materials.

Key to helping with your pricing is knowing your economy and what people will buy.  This is not the first time I have said this,  and it will continue as long as World of Warcraft has an economy.   What someone will pay for an item is exactly how much it is worth.

There are plenty of sites to learn about past sales.  Theunderminejournal and wowhead show past sales averages.  Some of them can be misleading depending on the past sales and exactly how many have been listed.   So combining the two (information and economy, knowledge) puts you in the driver seat for pricing and selling at the best rate possible.

The most interesting time is to have someone post a price check in trade chat and see just what people's opinions of an item price are.  Many times an argument will break out about how a quote is too high,  always ending with someone announcing that they should only have to pay 1c for an item.  It is a throw away line that is a sign of contempt for that item.  But then the person not wanting to pay a price is not really the target audience for the item.

One of my favorite items to see is the Haunted Momento.  If you have it it is a cool item that has a ghostly apparition behind you wherever you go.  Every so often it will pop up on the auction house with people asking between 20-25k.  I have grabbed a couple at the 1k mark and flipped them quickly.  But post a comment up in trade about the item and watch the fur fly.  It's a trinket that is completely useless, but if you know what it does the cool factor rises exponentially.

Timing,  knowledge and a willingness to understand your target audience can defeat anyone who criticizes your listing ask price.  Do not worry about whether they will pay for that item or not.  Be concerned to find the person that is more than willing to shell out the gold for your precious item.

When coming into the weekend many players will be cranking up their new pre-orders to Warlords of Draenor expansion and choosing their new boosted level 90 characters.

Most players will be starting to crank up their gear gathering on Timeless Isle and raids starting Friday.   Looking at the Auction Houses you can already see people taking advantage of the markets and grabbing/flipping raw materials.   The difficult part in doing this is that it is easy to replenish these materials (especially Exotic Leather and Ghost Iron Ore).   This shouldn't keep players in the next couple of days to do some heavy farming to hit the wave that will occur this weekend.

With the knowledge that we won't be seeing the release of Warlords of Dreanor till sometime around November/December it gives players a lot of time to work on their professions.  Thankfully, most players are not known for their patience when it comes to leveling professions.    The new boosted 90's are going to be wanting gear to catch up with their raiding groups and get into the action.

All of the professions should get a boost this weekend from the new quest for gear and enhancements.  Markets that have been slow and steady earning (Inscriptions,  enchanting) will see that boost this weekend from players filling in their scribe books for the future.  High investment weapons and gear might get some sales, but many players are looking at these new level 90's as secondary characters.  

A couple of items to specifically flip are Sha Crystals and Magnificent Hides for their use in the high level armor enhancements.  Needing 10 crystals and a handful of dust for the Dancing Steel weapon enchantment should drive up the prices for the Sha Crystals.  Magnificent Hides should get the same boost from sales of the Pants armor enchantments provided by Leatherworkers.

Keep an eye on the markets as they go up in the next couple of days and position your players to jump on the wave.  This weekend will be exciting for those that are brave and ready to climb the AH ladder to profits.

Geez,  the sounded cheesy even to me.   Go sell something :-)

Buying Cataclysm Mats

Patch 4.03 (or for those playing the home game the introduction to the Cataclysm Expansion) introduced new enchanting materials.   Wait,  doesn't that happen with each expansion?

What I like about the Enchanting materials during the cataclysm expansion is that they have reasonably kept their value.  There was a huge downward spiral right at the end of the expansion that players were looking to empty out their treasure troves.  Picking up many of these for an Avg of 5g netted me a healthy profit over time.

Why did it net me a healthy profit?   Because I kept on crafting the pets and some of the enchants that cataclysm brought along.   Where the enchants available have long since only become important to power leveling players the pets still sell very well.

The Enchanted Lantern (or the alliance equivalent Magic Lamp) still sells depending on the amount of profit I am looking for.   Getting 500% or more on my investment is nothing to sneeze at.

The other reason that I like the Ethereal Shards and Hypnotic Dust for investment at that time because players leveling a new enchanter would run into the need for those around the 470-480 mark of power leveling.   Selling these in batches of 10-20 can give you that magic number of 200% profit.

Looking at Theunderminejournal.com and its numbers shows the mean Avg sale of 13g a piece.   That's a little expensive for investment.  But wait,   we are smart and have an enchanter (or buddy enchanter) and access to ilvl 287-333 crafted gear.   Buying these materials cheap and disenchanting them for the materials to resell (sounds familiar right?   This is one of those cornerstone items of Disenchanting your fortune gets built on).

One more thing.   The developers have already announced a gear squish.  This is going to have the effect of getting people into dungeons and gear that much faster.  That means all that dropped gear that the players might have used will end up getting DE'd or vendored.  Where some might say sell all of the cataclysm gear at vendor prices,  I like to swim upstream.  Pets and enchants will always sell.  Look for those wonderful junk deals that players will have on the AH trying to rid themselves of gear they do not see the opportunity you see.

Starting to prepare your next round of investment now for Warlords of Draenor instead of waiting for the rush will allow you to be ahead of the gold game.  Storage area,  Investment for DEing and prepping for deals to come.   Sharpen up the pencils and the trigger finger to be ready to rake in the profits.

The ego strives to believe that as a gold goblin I can dominate any market I choose.   The reality is that where I can excel in different areas,  there probably is going to be someone that is a little bit better than me.   Considering the timing,  undercutting,  profit margins and the varied amount of tools that are available to Gold Goblins this is a true fact.

I was discussing with a guide about a new player that had arrived at one of the markets that we work together on.  This was obviously a banker to0n (level 2) that we started to keep track of how many times they were logged on.  It was incredible because they seemed to be logged on at all times of the day.  Putting our research together, I surmised that it wasn't just one person that was playing the toon but probably two people.  Everyone has to sleep at some point.

But it did strike me to the idea of just how important is it to be on or off someone's gold radar.  Anonymity has its own benefits.  When I started writing this journal I put out my main toon's name (Mommar) because I didn't want this to be a phantom journal.  The toon you look up in the armory on the Shandris server is the same guy that is writing in this journal.  

But here is the part that you might not realize.  I will tell you many times of sales that I have done or sales that are occurring.  I split all of my sales among my different toons based on what professions they have.  I also have a toon that handles my pet collections and one that handles my general sales.  I kept these private simply for the same reason that I have my public persona.  Those are the sales that I do not want someone to come after me believing they can take a scalp of mine.   Call it the belief that I would be a worthy challenger to the throne of King Gold Goblin.

The idea is that most people do not take the Auction House personally.   Very rarely do you hear people start to say 'that blah blah person undercut me' and look for vengeance.  What will happen is that if a player goes out into the public market, they have a better chance of becoming a target.  Barking for sales has become a lost art form on many servers.  Many players take a reactionary stance when it comes to providing goods.   Players say 'I need this' and people will message back that they have it available.  There are still some Gold Goblins that will post up their profession list as well as different methods of sales (your mats = free items etc.).  These are the players that are more apt to have to depend on their reputation.

A Nemesis can be considered a valuable psychological boost to your own sales.  Knowing that the person you have targeted is sitting there and laughing at you (imaginary or not) can drive you to keep posting items even if you are tired or bored that day.  Sometimes the quest for money just doesn't keep driving you day by day,  but having that Nemesis can keep you going.  Batman had the Joker,  Superman had Lex Luthor,  Spiderman had Doc Oc.  Through the hard times you can keep looking to top the market and have the last laugh.

Whether your nemesis is imaginary or not,  it can be a force to keep you on the gold goblin path and put more gold into your pocket.

Now to find the next pretender to my Kingdom and dash his hopes.
