Who Is Your Nemesis On the Gold Market

The ego strives to believe that as a gold goblin I can dominate any market I choose.   The reality is that where I can excel in different areas,  there probably is going to be someone that is a little bit better than me.   Considering the timing,  undercutting,  profit margins and the varied amount of tools that are available to Gold Goblins this is a true fact.

I was discussing with a guide about a new player that had arrived at one of the markets that we work together on.  This was obviously a banker to0n (level 2) that we started to keep track of how many times they were logged on.  It was incredible because they seemed to be logged on at all times of the day.  Putting our research together, I surmised that it wasn't just one person that was playing the toon but probably two people.  Everyone has to sleep at some point.

But it did strike me to the idea of just how important is it to be on or off someone's gold radar.  Anonymity has its own benefits.  When I started writing this journal I put out my main toon's name (Mommar) because I didn't want this to be a phantom journal.  The toon you look up in the armory on the Shandris server is the same guy that is writing in this journal.

But here is the part that you might not realize.  I will tell you many times of sales that I have done or sales that are occurring.  I split all of my sales among my different toons based on what professions they have.  I also have a toon that handles my pet collections and one that handles my general sales.  I kept these private simply for the same reason that I have my public persona.  Those are the sales that I do not want someone to come after me believing they can take a scalp of mine.   Call it the belief that I would be a worthy challenger to the throne of King Gold Goblin.

The idea is that most people do not take the Auction House personally.   Very rarely do you hear people start to say 'that blah blah person undercut me' and look for vengeance.  What will happen is that if a player goes out into the public market, they have a better chance of becoming a target.  Barking for sales has become a lost art form on many servers.  Many players take a reactionary stance when it comes to providing goods.   Players say 'I need this' and people will message back that they have it available.  There are still some Gold Goblins that will post up their profession list as well as different methods of sales (your mats = free items etc.).  These are the players that are more apt to have to depend on their reputation.

A Nemesis can be considered a valuable psychological boost to your own sales.  Knowing that the person you have targeted is sitting there and laughing at you (imaginary or not) can drive you to keep posting items even if you are tired or bored that day.  Sometimes the quest for money just doesn't keep driving you day by day,  but having that Nemesis can keep you going.  Batman had the Joker,  Superman had Lex Luthor,  Spiderman had Doc Oc.  Through the hard times you can keep looking to top the market and have the last laugh.

Whether your nemesis is imaginary or not,  it can be a force to keep you on the gold goblin path and put more gold into your pocket.

Now to find the next pretender to my Kingdom and dash his hopes.

Keeping up with the Black Market Auction House

The Black Market Auction House was introduced at the beginning of Mists of Pandaria.  Very little was known about it because it wasn't activated during the Player Test Realm phases of the expansion.  The players rushed to get there as fast as possible on the promise of old world items as well as very high level raiding/PVP gear.

Now that we are 4+ patches into MOP, on many realms the BMAH goes bare.  The Gear items are not as shiny.  The recipes are obsolete and only bid on by the profession completist.  Even pets and mounts go by with only a few deciding to bid on them.

But now this is where gold goblins should be swooping in for some prize pickings for resell.  Whether you use Underminejourrnal,  the smart phone app or go in person to check out the auction goodness you never know what might pop up.   The mounts and recipes and gear are BOP but pets occasionally pop up for bidding.  With a lack of bidders a person can grab a pet and resell it for a nice tidy profit.

Even if it appears that today the pet won't sell,  remember that in a few months there will be plenty of hungry pet searching mouths to feed.   With the way that Blizzard is setting up the next expansion,  a free boost to 90 will draw in a lot of new players who are concerned with having to level all the way through old content. New,  hungry players will drive the pet markets in the next expansion.   With new pets to sell on the horizon as well as older pets for new pocketbooks now is the time to look at your investments.

Many players made the mistake of not putting the BMAH to good use.  They looked at it as a gold dump and not an investment opportunity.  Take for Instance the Shimmering Wyrmling.  This was a pet you could buy during the Lich King expansion.  It was linked to a specific reputation to use (Silver Covenant) so couldn't be used by the opposite faction.

Now fast forward to today's Shimmering Wyrmling from the BMAH and this version of the Shimmering Wyrmling has no rep requirements.  Which means either faction can use the pet.  It's little bits like this that allow a Gold Goblin to raise the price of an item.  Other pets have popped up on the AH that I have bought for 2k gold,  flipping them for four times the amount.

The idea of flipping items for profit is not a new concept.  Every gold guide and gold management system tells you this is a great way to make huge amounts of gold.   The key to learning is to where the best place to obtain these pets are.  The farther away that players get from content,  the more apt they are to forget how to obtain certain pets and items.  Their lack of knowledge is what feeds the gold making machine that we try to create.

So the next time you're bored,  go head over to the BMAH and see what might be there.  Your next gold fortune might be sitting there just looking for your bid.

Grinding Out To Old Hits

When I started out playing World of Warcraft I knew nothing.   As I played I obtained knowledge through trial and error.  Some ideas worked,  others didn't.   That is just the nature of any game.  The more mistakes I made the more I was able to decipher what seemed like a large puzzle and got better and better.

One of the things that was always on my to do list was many of the old world raids.  With starting my Wow Journey at the beginning of The Burning Crusade expansion I missed raiding in AQ20 and AQ40.  I also missed some of the raiding at the end of Burning Crusade as players travelled into The Black Temple.

So now that Mists of Pandora are starting to wind down I've been visiting some of these old raids.  Some of them to finish up reputations that I missed.  Places like The Black Temple also has given me some raw materials such as Netherweave Cloth and Disenchant Fodder for Arcane Dust.

Now you might say to yourself why are you running all of this old stuff?  I want the big gold makers.  I want the pets and the gear that I can flip.  Running AQ20 and AQ40 usually takes me about an hour.  Running Black Temple takes me about the same amount of time.  Both of these if you combine the gold made through the mobs,  Selling trash items and BOP Purples that I cannot use for personal transmogrification and selling the raw materials I net between 800 and 1000 for that hour.  With many players complaining that they don't have enough gold,  you can live on 1000g for an entire week of repairs.

This doesn't preclude players from running the pet drop instances such as Naxxramas or even Raids found in the Outlands.   The key to many of these raids is which ones will give you not just a chance for big pet sales but also for the incidental sale items that can be acquired quickly.  Raw Materials will again be in style to sell with the next expansion and players looking to add to their crafter armies.

Today is the server reset.  So the next time your bored and sitting in a home city complaining.  Grab your nearest portal,  run a quick solo raid and then add some more profits into your portfolio.

Farming Darkmoon Faire

Darkmoon Fair Island opened up its portals yesterday to the lack of fan fare that I have talked about before. With the removal of obtaining xp for the various daily activities and quests,  it has become less of a focus for many players leveling their toon.

But one thing to keep in mind when you decide whether to visit the faire for the next week.   With the new expansion the odds are very good that the items will be added to the pet menagerie.  Having that stockpile of Darkmoon Prize Tickets will get you ahead of everyone else in being able to sell the various pets from the Island.

This is also a great time to level your professions for your alternates.  The +5 points that you can obtain each weekly visit can save you not just time but gold as well.  Do not forget to level the cooking and First Aid as well.

With the two bosses on the island being in rotation (Moonfang around every hour, Darkmoon Rabbit on an approximately 36 hour respawn).  Both drop pets that are in demand for pet lovers.   Both can bring in a large amount of cash both during the faire and when it's gone for the month.

If you need to review the different aspects of the Darkmoon Faire make sure to check out Icy-Veins write up on the entire experience.

Mists of Pandaria is winding down for many players.  As more and more information is released about Warlords of Draenor starting to develop a sound strategy for investment for niche items such as pets will allow you to be ahead of everyone else on the road to Draenor.

Don't forget the today is Cyber Monday so there is a lot of opportunity to get players into the game from the start.   Blizzard is selling MOP and some other stores are selling the boxed set/battle chest for the same cost. This will be a great time to get your friends into your favorite game.

Days of the Dead

This weekend is the Day(s) of the Dead Event.  Normally this is another one of those cute when you do it once type of events that Warcraft has.

But 2013 introduced a new wrinkle.  The Macabre Marionette originally was an item that you could use to bring a little skeleton to dance a jig with.  Thanks to the powers that be this year it has become a permanent battle pet.

Also the nice thing about this pet is that everyone can get it as long as you can have the cooking skill of level one.  With 11 slots you have 11 attempts to obtain this pet (meaning 11 chances to sell them later on in the year).

The key is to know where your home graveyards are.  All of the races have a specific home graveyard.  You unfortunately can't just show up to another graveyard to finish off the event.  Here is a list  and their graveyards.  It will be the one closest to where you started.

(info from Wowwiki.com)

Alliance:
  • Ironforge - Graveyard can be found to the south (southeast really) of the entrance up a small hill. coords 61,37
  • Stormwind - Graveyard can be found in Stormwind beside Stormwind Lake, behind the Cathedral.
  • Darnassus - Graveyard located directly behind the Guild Master house in Darnassus. cords 69,40.
  • Exodar - Graveyard is just south of Azure Watch.

Horde:

  • Silvermoon City - Going from Silvermoon go west past The Dead Scar before you get to Falcon Square.
  • Thunder Bluff - Graveyard can be found right next to the north lift of the Middle Rise
  • Orgrimmar - Can be found left of the road heading south right past the boar farm
  • Undercity - Graveyard is located inside the courtyard of the city right across from the chamber for the Orb of Translocation

If your having difficulties finding your home graveyard the graveyards in Dalaran and Shattrath are neutral and in some cases easier to find.

  • Dalaran - Graveyard can be found in next to Violet Citadel in the grass next to the Underbelly entrance.
  • Shattrath - Graveyard is just outside the East Gate of the city.
To finish the quest you need to purchase some milk and some simple flour.  There is a vendor in the graveyard area that is selling the flowers (Orange Marigolds) to see the quest keeper.  This vendor also sells the simple bread recipe.  The bread itself cannot be sent over the mail (plus the cost of mailing it would be more expensive than just buying the items separately).

Learn the recipe if needed,  make the bread and then deliver the bread and collect your new pet.  Unless you really need gold I would suggest holding onto these for a month or so.  This being a three day event and not as popular as others there is a good chance that supplies of the pet on many servers will be dwindling quickly.

You can only have learned three of the pets.  But putting them into cages and then putting them away into one of your banks will let you be able to sell them later.  Don't forget all of the other toons you have on other servers.  They can grab the simple quest line and put these little gold nuggets away from later sales.

For those that like to get a little silly.  I shall be performing with little bones later on today with my Arcanite Reaper for tips.  Cleveland Rocks!!!!

Take Me To Naxx

Naxxaramus during Wrath of the Lich King was the intro raid to many guilds.   Gathering 10 (Or even the brave 25 players) to run rampant around stitched golems,  Undead and even Mr Bigglesworth.   Good Fun for many including the guild I belong to.

Now that players are 10 levels ahead this ended up being a dead end to most players unless they were into nostalgia or leveling toons quickly.   This all changed in patch 5.1 with the introduction of Raiding With Leashes and Raiding With Leashes Attunement Edition.

With Patch 5.1 came three pets in Naxxaramus that players could pick up.   Even at 5.1 it was a challenge for most classes to solo with anything less than the epic raiding gear.  With 5.4 just on the horizon it is much easier to solo at least two of the three sections that drop pets.

Blighted Spore drops out from Loatheb in the plague wing of Naxx.   This can be tough to get too because of the second boss Heigan The Unclean.  On my warrior I was able to burn him down with cooldowns and a pot.  Once I reached Loatheb I was able to burn him down.  Luckily he dropped my new pet and I was able to run.   The next week I ran Naxx again and the other pets dropped for me.   Dropped it on the AH for an easy 8k counting gold and extra items sold or DE'd).

Dusty Clutch Of Eggs drops from Maxxena in the Arachnid Quarter.   These end up much easier to run (took me less than 20 minutes total) and I sold one of the eggs for 7.5k (adding the other gold and items it netted me around 11k total).

The biggest difficulty is reaching Gluth.  All of the other bosses are easy but you run into Patchwerk who can still kick most classes carcasses around.   Studying up on him and the different ways to get past him (I brought a tank friend along which helped get me past).  Once your past him then Gluth (after finishing Globbulus) is a piece of cake.   These pets can sell from 6k all the way up to 12k on some servers.

So why now talk about these?  Because with Patch 5.4 most players will have easy access to epic quality items.  Among the different professions,  faction rewards and dailies being in 490 and higher gear are relatively easy.  This means more players (especially us goblins) can run Naxx every week for a couple of hours. Netting between 6-18k for only a few hours work.

Other raid instances exist that drop pets.   But ones like Karazhan and Molten Core and run more often than Naxxaramus.  But if you're feeling froggy running all of them can net you a nice weekly reward for the extra pets and items you sell.

Next time your in Naxx,  Smack Patchwerk for me a couple of times

Distopian View Of Money

Mommar here.

First I will apologize for the Quarter word (or is that two silvers word) in the title.  But that describes the view I have from time to time having gold.

I"ve told my rags to riches story a couple of times here so I won't bore you with the details.   The short version is that I started this game knowing nothing,   stumbled, bumbled and made mistake after mistake to get to where I'm at now.

You've also heard me say time after time to find your own motivation.  Whether you are the gold thirsty goblin that never has enough.  Setting up your own goals to have every pet or every mount or own every piece of tier gear.   Whatever gets you to roll out of the proverbial gold making bed that day is entirely up to you.

There is a catharsis to starting at a minimum and building it up again.   There have been many players that have given up their vast fortunes and started all over for the challenge.  Saluting them I know that the fallback position of having a large bank account has kept me from taking this drastic of a jump.

As more and more new toys and items are dropped for people and made more available in the auction house,  there becomes a chance to decide whether that item is worth the time it took to make that gold.  A farmer that ends up with 1000g a day is going to value each and every gold piece a little bit more than someone who is generating 10,000g a day.  Each item becomes more or less valuable depending on the difficulty of obtaining it.

That same thought process goes to running instances and scenarios/world bosses to obtain items.   Where you cannot truly put a monetary amount on how much those boots of awesomeness were,  you can figure out a rough estimate of just how much time you spent to obtain them.   And just how quickly they will be replaced by something much more shinier.

This doesn't mean that it's hopeless to buy things from the Auction House.   Gold Goblins not only deal with pluses and minuses with gold.  But also just how much they can save depending on the item.   Have you looked to start a panda on a different server and then level them up to obtain the pets that are only available to them?   You get the enjoyment of trying something completely new,  and when you're done you can sell those pets for cash and prizes.   How are you dealing with the greens and even the purples that you obtain from running low end instances.   Do you just automatically drop them to be disenchanted,  or sell them for a few rounds to see what you can get.

Whether you make an instant decision on value,  or do a little research on an item.   Just how much of a value an item has is determined by the vlue you have for it yourself.  Keeping this in mind will help you price things better for mass consumption,  or for that big sale that noone believes you could have made.

Everyone has a certain amount of luck when it comes to playing World of Warcraft.  That last bleed you dropped on an epic boss that killed him just as everyone was dying.   That timely dodge that happens when you least expect it (first time I ever survived Murmur was by pure luck dodge just at the end).

But the bane of my farming existence has always been Ice Chip.  This is the pet that drops from the bag reward when you kill Lord Ahune for the first time every day.   The temptation was to just buy the thing from the AH (about 2200g) but then I always choose the more natural way to obtain many of my pets.

When I was hunting for the Reigns of the Raven Lord from Sekketh Halls I had the most horrendous luck.   Before it was able to be soloed I had to drag a couple of friends with me.   On what had to be the 110th time it dropped,  but I gave my partner a shot to win it and they beat my roll.  Many dents were left on my desk after that.  Finally after about 6 months of work,   going day by day running the instance I was finally able to watch it drop.   I did my nekkid run around all of the major horde cities in celebration.

So why am I telling you all of this self induced misery?   Because I am not the only pet person in the game.  But many are just as willing to pay the price of the auction house or trade chat for a pet.  The Ice Chip as well as the pet that is available from the Darkspear rebellion quartermaster are difficult to obtain,  and will be worth gold in your pocket.   Not just now but later on in the future.   For the Darkspear rebellion pet those will be much more valuable when they won't be available to the masses.   Same with the Ice Chip that once the Fire Festival is finished it will be in demand til the next holiday.

Yearly events can bring quick gold in your pocket,  but the savvy and always thinking gold goblin will measure the quick profit of today vs the possible future profits when items are more limited.

Now time to go and beat on Lord Ahune again today.   Whats my name... yeah that's it

Engineering Love With 5.4

I love my engineers.   They don't make much money but they are very enjoyable to play for me.   With Engineering it's an expectation that they will be the redheaded step children by making gold.   Their gold making abilities have advanced with the last two expansions but still they have a long way to go before challenging the heavy money hitters.

I was reading the PTR notes,  especially the changes that occur in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.   With many of the quest hubs changing or being eliminated and the Sha blight covering the area's reputation and rewards become more interesting.   But a little tidbit caught my eye:

A couple of these items were promised in previous patches to be removed due to programming issues.  But to add 5 items for sale for engineers will give a quick boost to profitability.  The pets and mounts especially.   So looking at the items that are required to produce these you can put together that having a large quantity of  reserves can put you in the driver seat.

(all of these recipes might change,  but you can get a good idea of just what will be required from even the PTR recipes).

Sky Claw
Requires 30 Jard's Peculiar Energy and 30 Living Steel

Advanced Refrigerator Unit
Requires 5  Jard's Peculiar Energy and 5 Living Steel

Pierre
15 Jard's Peculiar Energy and 15 Living Steel

Rascal-Bot
15 Jard's Peculiar Energy and 15 Living Steel

Jard's Peculiar Energy Source Is the main component of each of these recipes and depending on whether it is BOE or BOP will determine it's viability to sell by itself.

The common link of all of these materials is the use of Ghost Iron Bars for production.   Living Steel is transmuted by alchemist so it will again be in high demand.   The Living Steel market has been depressed as of late so now is a good time to grab some quick low priced purchases.

As more from the 5.4 PTR is identified finding the niches ahead of time and preparing your farmers and purchases can get you that ride fast and have you ready to ride the gold lightning.

Bring Out Your Pets

Mommar here.

I will admit that when Blizzard announced the inclusion of battle pets in the World of Warcraft universe I was at the minimum skeptical.   Warcraft is a beautiful if a simplistic game of its own.  It's as complicated as you want it to be and is playable at many levels.  But who really wanted to add Pokemon type action to the mix.   It would get a lot of 12 yr old kids wanting to play,  muddying up a lot of the ambiance that is found in the game.

Even with my questions on just how popular or annoying this addition would be,  an opportunity arose of buying and selling pets.   Even with the announcement that captured 'wild pets' wouldn't be tradeable I still had hopes of a very nice lucrative business opportunity.

Now that patch 5.3 is on us,  and many players are looking for other things to do.  Much of the rumbling on the boards are flipping maximum level pets for profit.  The same as when your buying weapons and armor at low cost to sell at a much higher profit.   It's a proven tactic that works over and over again.

But a major difference between armor purchases and the pets you can purchase is that you can level those pets to be worth more.   Even leveling a pet 5 levels from its original level.  Take for instance a pet you purchase at level 5.  Do a quick search on your auction house and they may flip between 5g to 25g.  Taking that pet and as your leveling a lower toon,  doing a few pet battles you have a pet at level 10 rather quickly.    Announcing the pet (especially if it's a popular pet in demand) in trade chat,   the buyers will be running for your wares.   Remember you can have 3 of the same pet in your book so instead of just selling one at a time,  have three to sell.

This becomes much more profitable when you buy a level 20 pet and sell it at level 25.  Level 25 pets are in seriously high demand as more and more players become uninspired with the day to day grind.   Investing a 1000g for the level 20 pet and selling for 25,000g or more at level 25.   There is a larger gap of time needed to level that pet to 25 but the profits are much higher.

Two places to look for information on speeding up this new profit machine.

The gang at Warcraftpets.com give you the top 25 pets in demand across a lot of servers.

Warcraft Top 25 Pet

The gang at Wowinsider gives a pretty good guide on how to level your battle pets faster than just meandering along hoping to get a good fight.

Wow Insider Fast Pet Leveling

Now remember your milage may vary when it comes to the profitability and demand for certain pets.  If you see 20 of the same tradeable pet in the auction house at level 25,  your profit margin will be lowered.   Same with the low end of the tradable pet market.   Demand can drive prices down in a heartbeat.

Still this is a good time to open up a new branch of your goblin gold making machine and try something new.

It's Childrens Weak... I Mean Week

When I first started playing World of Warcraft there were certain yearly events that I looked forward to.   Children's Week was one of them.   Looking at how you obtained the different pets i knew that this was not going to be a smash and grab type of event.  Originally there were three pets and that it would take three years to complete.

The first pet I obtained from finishing up the Children's Week Death march through Azeroth and Outland was One Eyed Willie (now boringly known as Sleepy Willy).   Lots of entertainment and laughter was brought the first raid into Karazhan with all of our newly received pets leading the charge.

The next year I finished up the run to obtain my second favorite crack addicted pet Eggbert.   How many times this little idiot looked like he was going to aggro mobs in a raid (there was always that fear even if we knew better that somehow there would be a glitch and the little twerp would cause us to die hard that round).

Onward through the next year I obtained Elekk Training Collar.   The Cataclysm expansion brought some changes to the quest hub through Azeroth but it still had the same feel of go here,  dance a jig,  go here,  buy something etc.   Even the allure of selling ice cream in the middle of your home city for exhorbant fees lost its charm when it could be easily obtained.

With the introduction of account bound pets,  the game has taken it's final toll on what has become a chore of a holiday.   If you have all of the pets (which I have) then you can finish up the quest line for the enjoyment but there is no end reward other than 25 pet biscuits while amusing loses the charm of another pet.   With the quick introduction of patches and new content it may be time for Blizzard to revamp another world event to give more enjoyment to the masses.

Now onto the fun of making gold.   After that gloom and doom intro,  Children's Week can be a money making venture if you think outside the box.   With quest lines that require Ice Cream (Tigule And Foror's Strawberry Ice Cream,  many players will be looking to the Auction House to pick these up quick.   There is a vendor in both Stormwind and Orgrimmar but people tend to be lazy when it comes to items such as this.  It will not make you tons of gold but you could obtain a certain amount of beer money as you continue on.

The other item to look at doing is if you have a two person mount to give guided tours.   Especially in Outland it's a long trek for some players since they haven't unlocked all of the areas.   Lower level new characters may be willing to throw a few gold pieces your way for a guided tour as you are obtaining your pets.

The gang at Icy-Veins has an excellent write up on the achievements needed for the long strange trip meta-achievement.  Go here to make things just a little bit easier for yourself.

So enjoy the event,  enjoy your new pets or pet biscuits and game on.
