Distopian View Of Money

Mommar here.

First I will apologize for the Quarter word (or is that two silvers word) in the title.  But that describes the view I have from time to time having gold.

I"ve told my rags to riches story a couple of times here so I won't bore you with the details.   The short version is that I started this game knowing nothing,   stumbled, bumbled and made mistake after mistake to get to where I'm at now.

You've also heard me say time after time to find your own motivation.  Whether you are the gold thirsty goblin that never has enough.  Setting up your own goals to have every pet or every mount or own every piece of tier gear.   Whatever gets you to roll out of the proverbial gold making bed that day is entirely up to you.

There is a catharsis to starting at a minimum and building it up again.   There have been many players that have given up their vast fortunes and started all over for the challenge.  Saluting them I know that the fallback position of having a large bank account has kept me from taking this drastic of a jump.

As more and more new toys and items are dropped for people and made more available in the auction house,  there becomes a chance to decide whether that item is worth the time it took to make that gold.  A farmer that ends up with 1000g a day is going to value each and every gold piece a little bit more than someone who is generating 10,000g a day.  Each item becomes more or less valuable depending on the difficulty of obtaining it.

That same thought process goes to running instances and scenarios/world bosses to obtain items.   Where you cannot truly put a monetary amount on how much those boots of awesomeness were,  you can figure out a rough estimate of just how much time you spent to obtain them.   And just how quickly they will be replaced by something much more shinier.

This doesn't mean that it's hopeless to buy things from the Auction House.   Gold Goblins not only deal with pluses and minuses with gold.  But also just how much they can save depending on the item.   Have you looked to start a panda on a different server and then level them up to obtain the pets that are only available to them?   You get the enjoyment of trying something completely new,  and when you're done you can sell those pets for cash and prizes.   How are you dealing with the greens and even the purples that you obtain from running low end instances.   Do you just automatically drop them to be disenchanted,  or sell them for a few rounds to see what you can get.

Whether you make an instant decision on value,  or do a little research on an item.   Just how much of a value an item has is determined by the vlue you have for it yourself.  Keeping this in mind will help you price things better for mass consumption,  or for that big sale that noone believes you could have made.

Get a Grip On Your Pricing

Mommar here.

So here is a scenario that I see played out many times as I'm cruising along the Auction House.

Player thought:   Ooo,   there is no Adept Vermilion Onyx on the Auction House.   Look,  I have a Vermilion Onyx Blank.  So I can Craft one for sale.

(We are good up to now.   See a need,  sell a need)

Players thought:   Okay,  So how do I price this.   I see the value on my handy dandy marketing tool says 125g.

(Again,  we are good with this.   It is nice to be the first in line so you can add a little bit more to the listing)

Players thought:  I shall price it at 540g

(WHAT?????   Umm,   I think you missed the boat on this one.)

Pricing a relatively easily crafted item for an exhorbant amount of gold is just begging someone to come along and undercut you.    There is the small chance that you would get the sale.   A very small chance,   along the lines of the chance that Ed McMahon will deliver my bucket full of gold nuggets personally.

Placing that 540g price is nice to watch the first time.   Maybe even the second time it's nice to think of the possibilities that someone will come along and really really REALLY need that gem.   The third time that it arrives in your mailbox unsold it loses its luster and its interest.   Especially with the blanks being much cheaper than the cut.  25g and a little patience can save someone a lot of gold.     And many players aren't willing to part with that much gold for a gem that they will replace in two to three weeks.

Always manage your pricing based on what someone will pay for it.   Not what looks good in your hopes and dreams of selling.   By the time that 540g gem sells,   another player will have sold 10 at a lesser price.  And you are still stuck holding your 540g imaginary sale.

Have you posted epics today?

Yesterday being server reset day,  I was posting up my normal allotment of items.  Epic armor patches,  Spell threads,  everything that a raider with new equipment would ask for.  Including in this is my epic and standard gem package etc.

As we get closer to the release of Mists of Pandaria (the new pet battle system has just been released),  we get closer to the tipping point that players will stop purchasing items of gear for their alt toons.  As with any economic system,  there is a point in the curve that the investment stops being worth the time and the money that is put in.

Are we there yet?   Probably not,   as long as items still sell then there is profit to be made.  But now is the time to keep track of your investments more closely.  Are you getting the most bang for your gold?  Is your army of Alchemists or Jewelcrafters posting up gems at the right times,  or are the base mats better to be stored for later sales.

Items such as Truegold and epic gems will start to lose their value,  and when MOP is finally released they will end up having even less value.   Players will look to either gem or enchant with cheaper materials,  or ignore altogether looking for the gear at the next level.

A good idea currently is to make absolutely sure how much you have invested in your craftable items,  and balance between what items will be more valid sales when Mists if released.  Discounting sales of items to produce more turnover will allow your profits to remain at the same level,  but not end up getting left with materials that devalue in the long run.
