Controlling Your Reputation

There is a fine line in World of Warcraft between hero and villain with the community.   Many players revel in their ability to troll at a moments notice over subjects that incite 'flame wars'.   Jumping onto trade chat and starting up highly combustible topics.

The problem with this type of behavior is that ultimately it affects a players personal standing in the community.   They ultimately become a pariah among their peers.   And no one buys from the pariah if they do not have to.  The Ultimate punishment for a flame troll is to be ignored.   The ultimate punishment for a Gold Goblin who becomes a pariah to the community is to have one ore multiple strategies destroyed from non sales.

Before Mists of Pandaria it wasn't as difficult to survive something like this.   There was vast amounts of gold being slung around for items by players.  Many of them not even paying attention to who they were purchased from.   It was 'I want this item and I will pay for it'.   Players ran around with the knowledge that they could easily replace the gold with a few quests and a few sales of items.

With the changes in money with Mists of Pandaria,  players are a little tighter with their wallet.  They are less apt to go on a spending spree because replacement of gold is that much more difficult.   Understanding that there is gold out there for those that want it,  but it isn't dropping into players' pockets with the same amount of ease.

So keep in mind just what your reputation is with the community.   Where a good Chuck Norris joke never hurts anyone,  not everyone needs to hear your opinions on gay marriage or the President.  Unless gold isn't really that important to you anymore.  

So keep your reputation golden to the buyers.  It works out better for you in the long run.

With anything in life,  sometimes people lose direction.  Whether it's in a personal life or even in a wow gaming life.   Life occurs and ends up causing hiccups in their priorities.

Please understand,  I will always question whether warcraft should ever be in the top 5 of priorities in anyone's life.   When everything is removed,  the game,  the accomplishments and the camaraderie with others, this is a game that we are all paying 15 dollars a month to play.

When I started playing wow Barren chat was the place to avoid like the plague.  Every bad Chuck Norris joke and body function joke was told there.   Rambling missives about the latest breakup with someone's girlfriend were strewed around the sands of the barrens.  I am sure that the alliance players had their own graveyard of creative thought and fart jokes as they began to level.

But all of this travelled to Main city trade chats as players obtained higher and higher level.  With all of the capitol cities connected there really was no escape from the chaos.  Admitting that there was an occasional interesting comment, for the most part it was droll and frustrating.  Especially when attempting to watch for crafting requests and sales/buying opportunity.

Some servers have self policed themselves and pushed the natter to the general channel,  keeping the trade channel open.  Others have let their trade channel become the wild wild west.   Which does become disappointing due to the idea that it removes general access to crafters that players might need.

With Mists of Pandaria opening its doors soon,  this will become much more prevalent with new players discovering the "joy" of telling their favorite joke in trade channel.  You know the one you've heard 100 times before involving some racist or sexual act.   

So how is this combatted?   There really is no way to eliminate it completely.  People have the right to play wow any way they want to as long as they don't break the terms of usage that Blizzard enforces.   But the first combat is to make sure that you are not doing the same behavior.   If you advertise in trade chat,  then keep it professional.   Advertise your product or service,  have a good tag line and let it marinate in the traffic.   Spamming your add continually will just clutter up the works,  and please save that awesome sheep joke for your other friends offline.

Keeping the traffic clear will help new players get the help they need,  add more gold into your goblin pockets,  and maybe put a dent in the trade chat nattering.
