Old World vs New World Profits

Mommar here

The past couple of days I've been busy with other projects so had to cut down my time playing World of Warcraft.  Finishing my daily chores and a little exploration to get my lock up the unlocking of the gates quest eaten up a lot of my time.

I did spend a little bit of time doing some quick flips of items,  including my biggest pet peeve when it comes to markets.   Ghost Iron Bars should never,  ever be sold cheaper than the ore itself.   So I took a little of time to flip the market for what I was most comfortable pricewise.

In the past month I've gotten a little bit lazy when it comes to farming,  taking that little bit of profit off the top to spend on materials instead of farming them myself.   The measurement of the value of my time makes it much more cost effective than spending a couple of hours grabbing product for all of my daily timer crafts.

That doesn't mean that I don't do any farming in other areas.   Old crafting materials are starting to make a comeback and keeping an eye on enchanting materials.  Where the basic ore still tends to sell lower than I like,  a nice burst of demand for dust and celestials from both Wrath and Cataclysm areas bring in a nice profit.

The key to this is not abandoning old world techniques,  including the Elementium shuffle to generate profit.  Mists of Pandaria made it much more difficult to generate gold with the combination of an Enchanter/Jewelcrafter.   It required more juggling and decision making than just what was given during Wrath.   The same applies now,  except that crafted items for the most part are not going to sell well on the Auction House in the 80-85 range.  These areas are leveled through very quickly and players take their new toons into higher areas.

I've preached the idea of knowing your market and also knowing your conversion of materials.  What is that price point that will allow you to generate a quick profit,  against letting items sit there to deteriorate in demand.   That mental toolbox being put to the test.

Test yourself this weekend and see just where you think old world profits can be squeezed from.

Patch 5.2 Prep: Will players be returning?

The burnout of Mists of Pandaria hit much quicker than most expected.    Perhaps it was the huge amount of dailies that were seemingly required to keep up with the proverbial Joneses.   Or players running out of options after they had alread leveled one or two toons.     Older guilds seemed to be slowing down or even disappearing off the world stage.

5.2 is shaping up to bring a new spark to play.  With a brand new zone and more story lines those that enjoy reading the story throughout will be whisked back into a game that for many already became stale.

This is where Gold Goblins can look to take advantage again for players returning for another bite of the Mists of Pandaria apple.  Gear will again end up being important to get players raid ready as quick as possible.   And with the announcement that there will not be be the ability to fly in the new zone (everyone remembers Burning Crusade and the Blood Elf zones) it should bring a new burst of excitement for gear and enhancements.

If you haven't already started gathering and saving materials for your enhancement crafts,  now is an excellent time to get started.   From Belt buckles to leg armor to even gems,  looking for deals and ready to flip when the doors open to the new areas will put you on top of the Gold Goblin list.

More info gets reported with the PTRs,  and with sales of Raw gems stumbling now would be a good idea to look to get some farming under your belt.   Maxxing out your Valor Points will help to get you geared up quicker than before.   There hasn't been any announcement on points resetting (generally for the patches they do not reset) so making sure you're staying at the max (3000) and spending them accordingly will keep you in the game.

Sales Triage

Mommar here.

If you have ever skinned your knee or played a sport you understand a little bit about triage and prioritizing
wounds.   Treating a small cut before treating a more impactful wound doesn't help in the long run.  It could cause the one wound to become infected and worsen.

The same thing can be looked at in your sales.   Any person who sales they never lose money is either selling you something or playing things safe.    Being a gold goblin sometime entails risks.  High risk can mean high reward.  But it also can cause wound that need to be treated.   And too many wounds your empire can start a downward spiral.

This is where Triage economics can come into play.   If your seeing your fortune not growing or even diminishing you should perform a short quick diagnosis to the problem.   Where exactly are you losing gold at?  What items are not selling quickly and profitably?   Which of your items is sitting on the shelf only to be liquidated at the end of their value life?

Triggering a quick fix to these can cause your downward spiral to turn around.   If you are listing items at too high,  being dependent on quoted prices from different websites.  Look to see whether your economy can support that.   Are you cutting raw gems into pure stat gems (+str,  +int, + agi) only to see them sell low and get undercut continually.   Perhaps cutting mixed gems (+main attribute and +secondary attribute) can provide you with more opportunity for sales and profit.

Identifying where a wound is and fixing it quickly can keep your sales from becoming infected,  allowing you to continue at full speed instead of languishing slowly from diseased income.

Five Star Sales

Mommar Here

As we come closer to the new year.   The magic list of changes that we all want to do will start to come together.   Resolutions that slip into wishes that quickly slip into the past as the new year starts to roll along.

But in the next couple of days,  a wise Gold Goblin will look at their sales through the year and give themselves a rating.   Whether it's thumbs up,  toes up,  movie reels or whatever you choose as your method of showing approval.   Which sales were you especially proud of?   Which sales failed miserably and took gold from your pocket?

Learning from your sales opportunities in the past can lead to good sales in the future.   Taking those four and five star sales and seeing where they can even be improved.   Dissecting those one star sales and see just how they can be improved.

There is a well known adage that sales those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.    The same is applicable for your daily,  weekly and your 'home run' sales.   Taking a look at how your sales progressed can lead to the path of even better opportunities in the next year.

What sales are you especially proud of?   What sales are you hiding under the rug and denying they ever happened?

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Post Holiday Toys

Mommar Here.

Hopefully your post holiday hangover is subsiding.   And your holiday food coma has allowed you to make your way back into Azeroth to grab your presents.

One of the biggest gifts this year was tablets.  Both Apple and Android models were on the top of many gamers lists.   Some of the more powerful tablets can even play wow with a combination of software and connections (if you want more information do a good search for 'Playing wow on a tablet'.

But one item that many players will overlook is the Mobile Armory app.   Available for both the Apple and Android operating system this gives you the opportunity to be looking for deals on the Warcraft Auction House while your watching TV or on the go.

A few things to keep in mind.  If you have a physical authenticator like I do,  you will need to have that with you to be able to purchase items using the Armory app.   This might be a good time to switch to the App version of the authenticator  (a detailed step by step is available on the Battle.net FAQ).

The Battle net app is one of many tools that can be added to your toolbox to add profit into your column.  And help you make it through the post holiday blues as we look to ring in a new year.

Tis The Season

Tomorrow is the big day.  The big red fat guy shows up to give presents to all of the good gold goblin boys and girls.

But you also can be a Santa Claus yourself.    Many people will be receiving the Mists of Pandaria expansion as Christmas gifts.   With the discount that Blizzard and other online markets are offering for the entire Warcraft experience there will be brand new players into the game.

With brand new players arrives brand new possibilities for sales.  And opportunities to be Goblin ambassadors.  Keeping and eye on the Auction house for items to flip on the Auction house (blue items are especially good at being flipped for a quick profit.  As well as foodstuffs and potions) will give you a happy feeling in your Warcraft pocket book.

As you're sharing adding profit to your pocket book,  add a little spice in life.  If you see someone new struggling,  or having inferior equipment.   Throw them a new weapon that you can craft.   Give them the experience in Warcraft that not everyone is a scrooge.   You might just be adding to a great day for someone  in their first experience in Warcraft.

If you end up drinking a little too much egg nog for tonight.   There is always dancing on the mailboxes for tips in your hottest transmog wear.   I will be in Orgrimmar dancing the night away.

Have a safe and happy Christmas.

Follow Your Strength

Mommar here.

One of the misnomers of being a Gold Goblin is that you have to be great at every facet of making gold.  Somehow the belief has creeped in that you must be top in knowing what to craft,  high on flipping for profit. A master at farming materials to make gold and also jump on every sale that occurs.

Practically speaking this just isn't possible.  You can be good at multiple disciplines when it comes to making gold in Warcraft.  But to expect to be the best at everything will drive you completely insane.   As you continue on in your gold making career,  you will develop your strengths.   Those areas that you excel in due to server condition,  time management and even enjoyment of an aspect of making gold.   These strengths should be the base of your operations and your go to skill when it comes to making gold in the Warcraft environment.

Each discipline comes with its own hills and valleys.  But that base you create for your gold making empire will always be there.  Once that base of operation is successful you can branch out to become proficient and even great in different areas.    Creation of your gold making pyramid will allow your gold making dreams to become reality.

As you enter this weekend sales cycle,  build on your strengths.   The other aspects will follow suit and give you extra time to become proficient in other areas of the gold making experience.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Keep Your Head Up Gold Goblin

Mommar here.

It's time to face facts.    Looking back at the week your sales have been slow at best.    Too much inventory,   too few sales.   Don't look at your sales sheet because there are red frustration marks and a few Goblin tears staining.

We have all had these weeks.  Every Gold Goblin has had weeks that they could not make sales even if they offered the golden ticket in exchange for a few copper.   It's to be expected when you get hip deep into sales within the Warcraft community.

The key is to dissect why sales have been bad for that week.  Was it just the time of the year that everyone was hording gold for a big push?  Did you miss a financial wave somewhere that you should have been on top of and buying instead of selling?   Were you zigging with your products instead of zagging?

The important part is not to let yourself get discouraged.  One or even dare I say it two weeks of bad sales will not break your bank.   Your merchandise will sell at some point in the future.    Your inventory will shrink and that bank account will return to the black in no time.

Just be patient,  and keep your head above water.   And reposition yourself for the next week.  Learn from your mistakes and trust your honed instincts.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

The Short List

Mommar here.

JMTC:  Iowa branch got struck by flu bug this week.    There were good times that I was able to put together an article and some days that getting out of bed sounded like a really bad idea.

Included in all of this was a minimum amount of logging on World of Warcraft.   But out of this lack of will to log on to finish up anything but the basic chores it reminded me of time management.

Whenever you look to start or even continue your gold making career.   Time management is the first thing to check off on your list to master.   There are days that you will only be able to log on for a little bit that day.   Other days you will have some extra time to work before having to go to family functions.   Then there are thos magic days that the family is out,  clouds part and you have all day to longue around and work at your own pace.

Myself,  I have three different sets of tasks to perform depending on my time constraints and ability to invest.

Short:  (30 minutes)

I only do my three transmutes/daily crafts (Inscription,  Jewelcrafting, Alchemy).  If I have any time I will do a quick scan of the auction house for quick purchases to flip.

Medium (1-3 hours)

I choose 2 to 3 of my top selling crafters and do their normal listing routine and crafting.   If I only have 1 hour then I use the top seller as the number 1 priority.   Second hour I work with the number two seller down the list.

Long  (3+ Hours)

This obviously is a full listing of all of my auctions,   crafting items that will sell (PVP,  weapons, speciality enhancements).  Also included is my scanning for items to flip for a profit and resetting any markets that need to be rebalanced for added sales.

The time frames are estimates.  Many gold goblins don't want to spend three hours working on Auction house sales.   There are days that I have three plus hours to play that I just look do to a short day and then go to finish up dailies.  These are always dependent on your own adjustments.

Setting your own time management expectations will allow you to work quicker and more effectively in both short and long term time investments.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

A Perfect Circle Of Goblin Life

Mommar here (again,   someone else is going to be writing these things?   You've miss me too much)

About a week ago I entered an article called Profit Calculation 101 - GPH.   It was chuck full of math parts, digits,  symbols that only fed to the small math nerd in all of us.

But there was one thing that I hope you caught that was wrong with the calculations.   A couple of people wrote to me about them.   The math was correct,  but it was all dependent on a perfect circle between crafter and purchaser.

Think of this as the Gold Goblin version of the circle of life (No,  I will not be singing the song thank you).  A crafter obtains the raw materials. This is done via the auction house,   contacts with your own cartel or farming them yourself.   The crafter makes and prices the item for sale on the open market.   These are the only parts that are directly effected by the crafter.

The problem with the GPH equation I offered and our perfect circle of life is the need for buyers.   Value is a subjected issue when it comes to crafting.  Any real life collector knowing what their doing will tell you that an item is only worth what someone is will to pay for it.   You can have a 100,000 dollar baseball card according to the Beckett's baseball card manual.  But unless someone writes you a check for the money,  it's worth nothing.

The same idea applies to everything that a Gold Goblin crafts.  A Gold Goblin producer can make neat items from all of the expansions.  From Mechano-Hogs to Copper Bars can be produced continually if the materials are available.  But the value is only worth what someone is willing to pay.  You have a minimum amount that a vendor is willing to pay for an item.  So that can be considered your base value for an item,  but do that too often and you will be a poor Gold Goblin.

So our perfect Circle of Gold Goblin life has to be developed with not just the production of items,  but the knowledge of who is going to purchase the item.   There are certain items that you can list over and over it's a relative guarantee they will ultimately sell.   But as an expansion continues,  the profit margins for each of those items become less and less.  Demand becomes less and less as players purchase vanity items and upgrades.

That knowledge that we search for,  knowing the ebb and flow of people buying is what sets our standing on the food chain.   The idea that we can list the right items,  at the right price and continue to produce gold out of raw materials.

Okay,  I admit it,  I started whistling the song as I was finishing the entry.  Ignore the writer,  he got a little dust in his eye.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Controlling Your Reputation

Mommar here.

There is a fine line in World of Warcraft between hero and villain with the community.   Many players revel in their ability to troll at a moments notice over subjects that incite 'flame wars'.   Jumping onto trade chat and starting up highly combustible topics.

The problem with this type of behavior is that ultimately it affects a players personal standing in the community.   They ultimately become a pariah among their peers.   And no one buys from the pariah if they do not have to.  The Ultimate punishment for a flame troll is to be ignored.   The ultimate punishment for a Gold Goblin who becomes a pariah to the community is to have one ore multiple strategies destroyed from non sales.

Before Mists of Pandaria it wasn't as difficult to survive something like this.   There was vast amounts of gold being slung around for items by players.  Many of them not even paying attention to who they were purchased from.   It was 'I want this item and I will pay for it'.   Players ran around with the knowledge that they could easily replace the gold with a few quests and a few sales of items.

With the changes in money with Mists of Pandaria,  players are a little tighter with their wallet.  They are less apt to go on a spending spree because replacement of gold is that much more difficult.   Understanding that there is gold out there for those that want it,  but it isn't dropping into players' pockets with the same amount of ease.

So keep in mind just what your reputation is with the community.   Where a good Chuck Norris joke never hurts anyone,  not everyone needs to hear your opinions on gay marriage or the President.  Unless gold isn't really that important to you anymore.

So keep your reputation golden to the buyers.  It works out better for you in the long run.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

THIS IS GOLD MAKING!!!!!

Mommar here.

When World of Warcraft was first introduced,  it took an extraordinary player to excel at gold making.   There were a few millionaires but for the most of the population there was a struggle to make gold.

In todays Warcraft a player is tripping over gold.   Blizzard developers have made it so that opportunities abound in making gold.   The question is not a matter of whether a player can make gold,  but can a player
get back to making exceptional amounts of gold.

Looking around the blogosphere there are many journals that come and go.   Some will start out with the same precepts to making gold.  Craft this,  farm this,  go here,  sell this.  All are viable methods and 85% of the known Warcraft universe who read these run out and will perform them.   The more that players perform the same action,  the more watered down in opportunity those gold methods become.

Spartans were trained in close order combat.   A solo soldier could defend himself and defeat most attackers/defenders in a one on one contest.  But against an army they would soon fall.   But as a unit,  the Spartan formation could defeat just about any army.   Even today many of the formations that were used for protection by the Spartan armies are used by modern day armies.

So what made the Spartans that much better than all other armies?   It was training and discipline and technique they had developed on their own.   As Warcraft gold goblins we have done the same thing.   Instead of just settling for the 85%,   we look at the 15% that is left over that can push our gold making above all others.

This isn't always easy.    Gold making is more of an art form than just a repetition.  There is a baseline of activities that will make players gold.   Performing dailies,   crafting regular gear and even the occasional speciality gear that is requested.   But looking at the extra 15% of possibilities that exist for gold making will make a gold goblin that much higher on the food chain.  Closer to their goals and able to shield themselves and the other members of their Gold making cartel.

So time to lace up your boots for the weekend,   get your sword sharpened and your wits ready to pounce on good opportunities in the upcoming week.   This may not be Sparta,  but we are gold warriors by nature.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Dealing with the mid sales blahs

Every sales goblin has it happen.   The normal routine of posting sales,  crafting items,  raking in gold becomes a low paying second job.    Waking up in the morning,   signing on and going through the routine that has netted you hundreds of thousands of gold.

Events such as Love is in the air or lunar festival become just another gold grab instead of enjoying the event.   The Swift Lovebird becomes another dollar sign instead of a majestic steed (yes,  I said majestic with a straight face).

This is the time to adjust your views and renew some of the goals that you set aside for the love of the gold.   Putting aside one of your gold making routines and doing more of the "practical" adventures of wow.   Have you finished your Loremaster title on your toons?   Lead a team into Icecrown to whoop a little lich king butt?

Gold Runs through old content is an awesome way of changing the tempo of your gold making business.    The bonus in letting your toons get titles and enjoy the content from a new perspective.
Did you run Ulduar as a melee DPS?   Try it as a ranged,  or even the dreaded healing class.

Changing your pattern of gold making might not make you a ton of gold,  but it will breath life into your experience when the game starts become stale.

Good luck and good hunting
