Determining Value: Spirits of Harmony

When Mists of Pandaria expansion was released Spirits of Harmony was the original crafting material necessary to make high end armor and weapons.   As the expansion continued different spirits were introduced (Blood Spirit,  Haunting Spirit etc.).    In this discussion we're going to talk about the Spirits of Harmony.

If you have done any dailies in Isle of Thunder you should have a decent amount of Spirits sitting in your inventory.  While finishing my dailies I usually end up with between one and three a day.   Combine this with having my farm in Halfhill producing 16 motes of Motes of Harmony I generally can end up with 5 or more per day to work with.   As with any crafting mat,  the higher the mob killed generally the better chance of having one of the Motes of Harmony drop for you.    So at level 87 mob will probably not have as plentiful a loot table when it comes to Motes of Harmony as does the level 90-92 mobs sitting in Isle of Thunder or Isle of Giants.    Now I'm sure someone will point out that this is faulty calculations because they know if they sit farming in one place for long enough they will stock up on motes.   Your milage always may vary depending on what farming technique you have.

The easiest way to determine the value of your Sprit currently is based on your professions.   Blacksmithing, Tailoring and Leatherworking has the most outlets to determine value.   Here's an example.

Masterwork Ghost Forged Blade
(prices based from theunderminejournal.com)

This item takes

Ghost Iron Bar x 12 (88g)
Kyparite x 30  (88g)
Spirits of Harmony x 5 (to be determined).

If the sales price of this ends up being 5000g then you walk away with a profit of 4700g.   Rough math would show that each of those spirits of harmony = 900+ per.   Technically they aren't truly worth 900g because if you were only able to sell the weapon for 4000g that would lower the value per Spirit.  Also you are not including labor time and the amount of time it cost to farm.   Still this gives you a baseline value of what a Spirit would cost.

The assumption also has some difficulties with the idea that you put a sword in the Auction House and it's guaranteed to sell.  Anyone who has sold on the Auction House knows this isn't always true.

Let's look a higher value item with our base calculations.

Bloodforged Warfists

This item takes

Blood Spirit x 6 (4798g)
Living Steel x 6 (2982g)
2 Spirits of Harmony

If our sales price for this ends up being close to the mean Avg sale (22000g) then you end up with a much larger profit (14220g) per Spirit of Harmony).   Again this becomes a rough calculation based on how many sales you are able to obtain.  The farther along that the raiding schedule becomes,  players are less apt to buy high end items instead of just waiting for looking for raid items.

Many of the new patterns that drop from the new profession mechanics also use Spirits of Harmony for their crafting.  Being ilvl 522 these will be in high demand.  The problem being the availability of Haunting Spirits which are only obtainable from Disenchanted 522 raid items.   The Haunting Spirits aren't available from disenchanting looking for raid items which will put a kink in obtaining them for crafting.

So what sparked this expedition into simple math?   It was an advertisement found in trade chat a couple of days ago.  A player was advertising the creation of a Masterwork Phantasmal Hammer.   The player had all the materials and was willing to pay 250g per Spirit used.   This would net a profit of 250 x 5 = 1250g.  Not a bad amount of profit.   But if you do the simple math you can see that it isn't such a good deal.  When I can take 4 of those Spirits of Harmony and craft a Bloodforged Warfist and net almost 6-7 times the profit.

Determining value for your Spirits of Harmony can be as easy or as difficult as you make it.  It all depends on  just how much research you put into your sales.   And how much your time is truly worth.

For me,  I don't roll out of bed unless 250g is involved.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

I'm gonna tell you a secret

There is a big secret when it comes to playing the Auction House and making large amounts of gold.  It's a secret that you can keep to yourself,  or share with friends.   It's a secret that easily 95% of the players in World of Warcraft do not know.

The secret?  Making gold is not rocket science.

This is in no way to convince you that you can be a warcraft millionaire tomorrow.  Making gold does take time,  and even some effort.   But a PHD in WOW economics is not needed.  What is needed is one phrase that you need to drill into your goblin gold loving head.  When you flip on the computer,   log into your computer and your gaming screen and prepare to play.   One phrase will change how you make gold in warcraft.

Supply and Demand.

If you took basic economics in school or in college,  this was what was the basis of any market system.   People want something,   someone provides it at a price and they make money.  If noone demands it,  then it goes unsold and you move onto another item to sell.

The wow auction blogging community will show you many ideas.   Items you can craft,  should craft,  should buy to resell.  But supply and demand is what will put gold in your goblin pocket.  Forget this idea and it will just as quickly remove gold from your pocket in lost auctions,  failed crafting projects and storing the wrong items.

On another item,  seems that many people are complaining on the boards of having their Battle.net accounts being hacked,  some are pointing to the authenticatiors  being the root of the problem.  The blues on Battle.net cried foul on many of these rumors.   If you read their blue post here they have yet to have an incident reported with an authenticator secured account.   So the rumors of people removing their codes form their accounts are leaving an unsecured account.  With the release of Mists (thanks to the Gold Queen seeing that the latest beta is now a PTR build).   In short,  leave those authenticators on your accounts,  or let the player beware.   The scam and phishing artists will be in full force with the release of the new expansion pack.

Good luck and good hunting

Got Glyph?

One of the biggest money making opportunities coming up before the release of Mists of Pandaria will be
'Glyphmas part 2'.  'Glyphmas' originally was when Blizzard expanded the glyph mechanics to 3 tiers and added/removed multiple glyphs.   Players bought multiple glyphs to fill the gaps they had in their toons.   Large amounts of gold were made by the inscriptionists that were prepared.

But left out in the cold were the non inscriptionist who watched players rake in 1000's of gold per day.    This time the non inscriptionist can be prepared to make a sizeable profit from just a little time and investment.

On many servers glyphs are going for inexpensive (I'm hesitant to use the word dirt cheap,  but 1.5g per glyph is right next to dirt on it's cost).   These glyphs are going for less than it costs to purchase the ink itself.   So a wise investor will start to look for these bargains to sell when the rush hits.   I set my purchase limit to 10g and my total limit to 20 glyphs.  Depending on your server size you may raise or lower these limits.

The easiest way to do this is to go into the standard search directory for the auction house,   click on the glyph category and then flip the search so that it goes from lower to higher.   Doing this will also allow you to look at glyphs that are for a low bid.   Bidding low is a good way to occasionally get a high level win in the gold rush.  If you lose your bid,  you get your gold back.  Win and relist either now or later when the demand is at it's highest.

Also a good target will be the inks themselves.   Just stay away from the speciality inks [Fiery Ink] etc unless your very familiar with what each ink can be used for.  Mid level inks such as  [Jadefire Ink] will retain it's value.

Later on we will have a more detailed suggestion on 'Glyphmas revisited' and how to take more advantage of this boon in the market.

Straight to the Hearth

The hearthstone,  one of the few items that will follow you all the way through your adventures in azeroth.    Sometimes the bane of your existence when it's down and you just want to go back home,   take a quick hot bath and pack it up for the night.

Something that people do not realize is that it's a very powerful item.  Especially when you have the timer down to 15 minutes on it though a higher guild level.   It can zip you around the world in a moments notice.

When I started playing warcraft I set my characters hearths at the nearest inn as they were questing.  Made it very easy to zip back to a safe spot and finish up turning in quests.  But once I maxed out my toon,  it just seemed to be a random place to place the hearth at.   I could go anywhere I wanted with the zeppelins,  and the flight paths.

But with the hubs that first were in dalaran,  I realized that it could be a good tool to have.   So I looked at the best places to have my different professions.   As they were leveling I kept my hearth in Dalaran (and then in Orgrimmar with the introduction of cataclysm).   Then I decided where to place permanently them at their best advantage.

Two of my engineers remained in Dalaran.  Having access to the engineer only auction house gave me quick access without any of the lag of the major cities.   It also gave me access to all the profession patterns via a hop/skip and jump over to Orgrimmar (Stormwind would be the same for the alliance).

Placing my leatherworker in the valley of wisdom freed up the ability to grab from the mailbox my money for the day,  and then let me work with the anvil and the smelting area in that same zone.   Auction house access right in front of me sealed the deal to where to place that hearth.
My jewlcrafter ended also in Dalaran.   Picking up the Dalaran jewel crafting daily,   going to the portal  and picking up the cataclysm jewel crafting daily and then going through my normal routine for the day.

I placed one of my bank toons down in Tanaris for quick access to the joint alliance/horde auction house.   I could quickly jump to that toon,  check out any auctions to snipe or switch over,  and i was finished with that gold making chore.

Placement of your hearths might seem to be tedious,  but take a look at the different options and what your crafter needs are.   You might find out that there is a much better spot to be doing your daily routine.
