Top 10 Items to Stockpile in order to prepare for the Cataclysm Expansion

Ok so I don't always buy my alts the best gear in the world...

I decided to finally sit down and write about the top ten items I see rising in price during the upcoming Cataclysm Expansion that you can start stockpiling immediately. In the comments section feel free to naysay any of my top ten or suggest your own additions you deem better than my own list.

Item #1: Saronite Ore

I spoke about stockpiling saronite ore for cataclysm already on Ferraro’s blog, but let me reiterate the main reason to start stocking up on saronite: Transmute Titanium. Alchemists (and there will be a lot of new goblin alchemists) are going to be chomping at the bit for fast, sure fire skill ups getting those last few skill ups before they can use the new cataclysm materials. Transmute titanium is the answer to all their leveling issues.

Economic Analysis: Saronite ore can be purchased for near vendor price currently which means that there is very little risk behind buying the ore and crafting it into bars while preparing for the expansion. Low risk, Medium reward.

Item #2: Pets

With the changes to Azeroth scheduled to be released when cataclysm goes live, it is possible that several vendor pets and rare drops could disappear forever. Two examples of the pets I’m referring to would be the black tabby cat or ancona chicken. Since these items will sell even if a vendor is added to stormwind and orgrimmar (there are plenty of vendor items that sell for 200-400% markup!) there is almost no risk involved in stockpiling pets for cataclysm. With all those new characters I’m sure there will be a quite a few achievement hunters among them.

Economic Analysis: Since pets will sell regardless of who sells them you will get at least some money back in the worst case scenario and have priceless pets in the best case scenario since the playerbase will no longer have a source to get more of them. Medium risk, High reward.

Item #3: Netherweave Bags

Netherweave bags ALWAYS sell. I have no doubt in my mind that the market for these will explode when the first goblins and worgens step foot inside the auction house.

Economic Analysis: 99.99999% chance of profit stockpiling these beauties. Low risk, High reward.

Item #4: Infinite Dust

This item falls into the category of leveling materials that what will be required to reach the skill ups necessary for cataclysm level enchanting. I expect that they will rise in price over the course of the expansion to sit around the 4.5 gold mark per dust. With inflation it could get even higher and since you can occasionally find dust as cheap as 50 silver this is an easy investment with very little risk involved.

Economic Analysis: The price cannot possibly get lower on infinite dust as it is going to be required to level up efficiently prior to cataclysm skill ups in the expansion. Low risk, High reward.

Item #5: Lesser Cosmic Essences

Greater Cosmic Essences sell for about 20 gold each and their lesser cousins for approximately 9 gold each today. I expect these to go up to around 30 gold for greaters and 15 gold for lesser. Pure speculation based entirely on guesswork, it could turn out that infinite dust is all you need to level through the wotlk skill ups in cataclysm in which case saving these would be pointless.

Economic Analysis: Chances are the lessers will still be very valuable in cataclysm but be accepting of the fact that you may take a loss with this investment! High risk, Medium reward.

Item #6: Cobalt Bars

Cobalt is going to be essential for engineering and blacksmithing leveling (jewelcrafters will most likely prospect the cheaper saronite ore unless of course no one entering saronite zones in cataclysm because they stay in starter wotlk zones changes that). Having a healthy stockpile will probably net you decent returns in Cataclysm and if you asked me to guess… oh you are asking me? Ok well in my humble and experienced opinion cobalt bars will sit around 50 gold per stack in the expansion.

Economic Analysis: Medium risk, High reward.

Item #7: Alchemy Leveling Kits

Ok so this really is a collection of items but the idea is that you gather all the materials needed to powerlevel someone from 1 to 450 alchemy and you sell it. The only problem is that leveling requirements and recipes could change drastically in cataclysm. There’s no guarantee that your stockpile will even work! However, the rewards for doing this are massive, in saving someone the time to gather the materials themselves they will often be willing to pay THOUSANDS of gold more than the items are worth as a whole. I’ve sold alchemy and blacksmithing kits for 4k profit and come cataclysm I wouldn’t be surprised to see kits worth 2.5k going for 7-8k gold easily.

Economic Analysis: High risk, High reward.

Item #8: Enchanting Scrolls for BOA Gear

Low level characters wearing their fancy smancy BOA gear have no reason NOT to enchant it. Although many people have boa gear already, there is still the chance that they decide to create a character on a new realm or a class which does not have the BOA gear already. In either scenario they will need enchants and lots of them! Popular ones will be speed to boots, enchant chest health, enchant chest mana, firey, crusader and spell power to weapon. There’s still plenty of time before cataclysm to get a healthy supply of these into your guild bank and ready for the wave of new levelers eager to enhance their characters.

Economic Analysis: Low risk, High reward.

Item #9: Borean Leather

This is an item I’ve not seen anyone talk about when preparing for cataclysm. That’s a good thing too for people wise enough to start stockpiling it today as I predict prices for borean leather will reach the 35-55 gold mark per stack during the expansion. Right now it goes for about 20 gold a stack so that’s a pretty nice profit margin if I’m right! No matter what the price should remain as high as it is today so you will at worst break even or at best double your money.

Economic Analysis: Low risk, High reward.

Item #10: Crystallized Water and Earth

These are super cheap right now (buy in eternal form, not crystallized since it’s cheaper) and are needed by engineers to level engineering into the cataclysm skill up range. Again, this is an item I’ve not seen anyone suggest stockpiling and I expect it to be quite valuable come cataclysm, maybe even 1-3 gold per crystallized element. Considering the fact that these go for less than 50 silver that’s quite a lot of profit! The only downside is that if these don’t sell you will pretty much be stuck with them as they won’t be necessary for any other leveling professions when cataclysm hits.

Economic Analysis: Medium risk, High reward

  1. what about stuff like copper bars and light leather

  2. Yesterday I got one of that rare very low mats AH days. Eternal Fire at 11g (my server price is around 18g last weeks).
I buy everything I found and end up with 160 of this beauties.
I could sell them for 7g or 8g profit easy.
Or should I save them for cata as well?
    What do you think?

  3. I notice most of the items you suggest stockpiling are for Engineers which I can imagine there will be quite a few on the horde side taking advantage of the goblin racial boost, what would you suggest for the Alliance Side

  4. doubtful about speculating on stacking leather. Lots of worgens will be out and about skinning anything they see - and unless there's a new profession to absorb the extra leather - it will still be only LW.

  5. Netherweave bags are best stockpiled in the form of bolts of netherweave cloth. That way you can store 5 bags in 1 slot.

  6. Lower level engineering mats for horde and alliance Twinks.

More Goblins will be alchemists yes, more worgen will be skinner/leatherworkers due to racials. Leathers and hides may be flooding the AH though.

you're not going to be stuck with crystallized earth. You can always make JC rings out of em that you DC into dust and greater cosmics

  8. I"m hesitant to do a ton of stockpiling for leveling mats til the Beta spits out what the leveling curve will end up being.

I won't be surprised if they don't lower the mat requirements for frostweave bags when the new uber bags are released to the beta as well. I've been stocking frostweave (just leveling toons you get a ton of it to store) and then turning over the occasional frostweave bags when the mats on the AH can be showing a profit.

A lot of it is going to be where the Curve numbers come in. Mithril has been outrageous on Shandris because that's the largest dead spot for items. Where thorium is being given away for vendor water it seems. Same thing for cobalt in that little orc children are being sold for the cobalt bars/ore

  9. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=di0KyOL8uP8

Watch from 5:57 and out. The Ancona chicken is still sold in Cataclysm.

  10. I'm getting confused. Will the new mats (ore, herbs, etc.) be in the same zones as the old mats? Where will we go to find the newer items? Will old items disappear? This time there's no "new land" being created.

    Thanks

  11. I would add Inks to this. I would guess that there will be a big rush on glyphs from new toons, and from people wanting to learn all their class glyphs. I am stockpiling inks with that in mind, and plan on making a ton of glyphs when the 4.0 patch drops, and again a little after the expansion comes out. I would guess with the changes to the glyph mechanics that the glyph market will be best early, and fall off a cliff later in the expansion.

  12. I never see the big need to stockpile on the anticipation of making gold. Some items will always sell ie enchanting stuff you mention. Other items may sell but are either still high price ie cobalt, leather or are easily farmed for what you need. I don't intend on specifically stockpiling anything. I do have two guild banks filled with stuff but that is more stuff that is just nice to have or on that one day when none are posted I can make a lot of gold.

What I think is missing from many people is the items that will plummet. On my server borean leather is 20g, arctic fur is 85-100g yet leg armors are being dumped in huge quantities such that they are selling for 100g each. No logic to this but trying to buy them all and resale just doesn't seem worth it given the risk of selling as they sell in such low quantities now. There are many items like this on my server. Some are worth buying others I would not touch.

  13. Anacone chickens won't be removed in cataclysm

  14. I would really like to hear your opinion about uncommon quality northrend gems. We can see that today outland gems of the same quality have high demand from powerlevelers. Do you think the same would happen in cataclysm?

  15. Regarding uncommon gems, I spoke about them in ferraro's blog post, take a look there as I agree with you that they will be valuable. However it's better to stockpile the saronite ore so you can have options for selling it as titanium, bars or prospected items.

  16. I don't care if goblins have an alchemy boost-- there is no way I can make a goblin without blowing stuff up. :)

Maybe alchemy-engineering, but my little green guy demands big kabooms.

  17. (jewelcrafters will most likely prospect the cheaper saronite ore unless of course no one entering saronite zones in cataclysm because they stay in starter wotlk zones changes that)

I believe I read somewhere (mmo-champion?) that no one can enter Cataclysm zones until level 80, so there should be some people mining Saronite nodes. Of course, they'll probably nerf Northrend leveling the same way they nerfed Outlands, so you'll be level 80 before you finish Grizzly Hills.

  18. Good list, this could be a great way to get a head start in Cataclysm if you play the market right!

  19. Fred is right on. Just stack bolts of netherweave cloth. That way you can store 5 bags in 1 slot.

  20. IMHO, I would hesitate about any stockpiling of mats, especially for goblins and worgen. Blizz has stated on the forums that we should expect changes to the mat requirements on almost all crafted items.

I've had issues with stockpiling pets. They are considered an on-use item and cannot be sold when used. Before a prior patch, all my stockpiled pets where marked as 'used' and could not be sold.

Bags will sell, but expect new patterns in Cataclysm that will either hold more or different items. I wouldn't expect a large ROI.

Enchants, yes. I agree. Even level 81 toons will/may want to enchant their new quest greens with cheep enchants.

  21. For me, the number one item I am stocking is inks for glyphs, and the glyphs themselves. On Caelestrasz, according to WoW census, there will be 7100 level 80 players, each able to learn 20 glyphs each.

That is a lot of glyphs to be sold, even if there are 15 or 20 sellers.

  22. Hey Marcko, what are your thoughts on stockpiling Northern Spices ? I figured this item is abundant at the moment and very easy to get, but come Cataclysm few people will be doing LK coking dailies, and thos who chose to powerlevel cooking definitely won't do them. Since they are in stack of 100, and cost around 50g per stack (that's my max buying price), it is very easy to get huge quantities for what I think will be a good seller.

    Looking forward for any contribution

  23. hey i started stockpiling borean leather as about 30 stacks were selling for 9g a stack expecting some profit thanks

  24. so far I`ve got 83 stacks of saronite bars and 15 of just ore --- starting to stock borean leather too ---- give me a few weeks and bam !!!!

  25. Bags = fail.
Reason is that now you will be able to buy 16slot bags from vendors in your home city, or city you are exalted with.

  26. I read that the bags are soulbound though, so you wouldn't be able to send them to your alts.

  27. Should I leave my Borean Leather as-is or would it be safe to upconvert it to Heavy Borean Leather?

  28. One of the things i was speculating is going to sell in huge amounts with a lot of profit is Arcanite Bars made by alchemists, as elementium is coming back for JC and BS and is one of the mats for making elementium bars

  29. a follow up on this post would be interesting.
