Plant PVP: Enigma Seed vs Songbell Seed

If you have been doing your dailies diligently in Half Hill you have been gaining those precious points of reputation with The Tillers faction.  Along with this gives you your own little piece of land to plant in.  Ultimately openly up 16 plots to plant seed to grow.

One of the strategies we talked about to maximize the potential of this land area is to plant the daily crop you receive from Father Yoon,  till the soil again and then plant Songbell Seed.   This gives you the opportunity to pick up a minimum of 4 Motes of Harmony and at maximum land availability a full Spirit of Harmony and 6 Motes of Harmony every day (16 Motes of Harmony total).

To increase profits,  especially for non crafters.  Players would exchange each Spirit of Harmony to either Danky or Krystel at their respective shrines for a Golden Lotus.   This was a viable income that guaranteed between 250-500g a day just to resell the Golden Lotus itself.   Alchemist could make more gold by crafting raiding flasks or potions of luck.  Jewelcrafters could use the item to get a new transmute timer towards a blue gem.

Enigma Seed was also available for planting as well,  but the drop rate of a random Golden Lotus was miserable for drop rates.  It was mostly abandoned as being non profitable and the Songbell Seed became the king of the planted crop.

All this changed with patch 5.1.  There was a sizable increase in the drop rate for Golden Lotus from the Engima Seed harvesting.   This changed the base idea (shall we coin this the Half Hill Shuffle?) of what to plant for the maximum profits for now.   Instead of planting Songbell Seeds and then converting them to Golden Lotus plants you would obtain a lot more gold from planting/harvesting the Engima Seed directly.

Now,   this is a nice set of options for quick gold.  But trying to be the top of the heap of the Gold Goblins means we have to think outside the box.   The one difficulty that people have when wanting items crafted is the inability to obtain Spirits of Harmony.   If you want an item crafted you must find a crafter willing to part with their Spirits of Harmony and negotiate a price.   This makes these crafting items expensive depending on the availability on servers.

At some point Spirits of Harmony will go from BOP to BOE.  It has occurred with every non raid crafting item at some point during the maturity of the server.  And that initial burst of demand when it occurs can dwarf much of the smaller profits that occur from a simple harvest/trade that occurs now.   So every 3 days (two days a week) I go ahead and plant a crop of Songbell Seed.  this gives me from my harvest  3 Spirits of Harmony and two Motes of Harmony.   I set those aside as a long term investment when they become BOE.     There is very little downside on this investment unless Blizzard decides to create a new crafting material.  Even then Spirits of Harmony will be useful all during the expansion.

All of this is assuming that you have purchased all of your patterns for your perspective crafter.  The amount of profit that is obtained from the Half Hill Shuffle (I'm liking that name more and more) ends up being dwarfed by a few sales of the patterns purchased by the Spirits of Harmony.  Even after you have obtained all of the profession patterns purchased by Spirits of Harmony,   saving the Spirits of Harmony for crafting of large ticket items can equal or rise above what is gained from the new shuffle.

So if your a non crafter,  this new Half Hill shuffle is a new viable way of obtaining gold through your farms at Half Hill.   For the non crafter your decision becomes more difficult because you have to base which strategy to follow based on your crafting ability,   demand on your server and your willing to be patient for larger profits against a quick,  easy profit amount.

Either way,   this can expand your gold making adventures,  making planting seed just like planting gold and waiting for the money tree to appear.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Profit Calculation 101: GPH

Mommar here:

There are sometimes that when you get started with being a Gold Goblin you need to build your base first.   The easiest things to forget are the basics,   walking over dollars trying to find another dime.

In this case we're going to look at calculation of profit when it is in regards to your per hour investment.

Most players when they are leveling can do between 12-15 quests and hour.  With the avg income being around the 200g mark.   We're going to use this as a baseline.

Regular Questing = 200 gph (gold per hour)

Now,   if your up to your dailies,   finishing 15 dailies in an hour is not unheard of.   So the avg of those being in the 15g range (remember this is avg,  so depending on which ones you are doing your milage may vary.)

Now with both of these you need to include vendored items,  and green/blue items that will drop for either resell or disenchanting.   lets place this in an avg of another 50g per hour

So along with your dailies of 200gph or your regular questing take in of 225g,  add another 50g to give you a grand total of 250g (275g) per hour.

When it comes to crafting,  our calculations become a little bit more difficult.

Calculation of GPH will depend specifically sales.   So you won't know your GPH til after everything has sold for that cycle.   Lets assume that you spend half an hour per profession to gather materials,  craft and list on the AH.   So any sales that occur after the sales cycle (always use the 12 hour cycle for sales)
=
Your calculation ends up being [(Total Sales} - (Cost of material) ] x 2 = GPH
(you multiply the entire formula x2 because your using a half hour base for your crafting time)

Example

Sword of Ubersmacking sells for 9,850 (this is minus the Auction House cost).  Your cost to craft was 4500 gold in materials purchased.

With this first formula we get

[(9850) - (4000)] x 2 = 11700 GPH.

This formula works for many items that don't require BOP items (Spirits of Harmony is a good Example)
it also sets your baseline for how much your gold and time your investing and how to use your time wisely.

But there is a hole in this formula when you get into more advanced items.   There is no calculation for the cost to gather the Spirits of Harmony.   It may take an hour if your planting Songbell Seed on your farms in Half Hill.  Also there are farming lanes in many of the zones that can produce a total of 1-3 per hour.  To fully calculate your GPH you have to add the time it took to produce these Spirits of Harmony.  As of Patch 5.1 these cannot be purchased via gold.  The only way to obtain is to farm them or gather them as your leveling.

If you look at your dailies in another way,  being able to gather Mote Of Harmony add value to your GPH when it comes to questing/dailies.   The higher the areas that you are working on dailies,  the higher percentage of possibility of having Mote Of Harmony to drop.   Either way whether you choose to farm directly or to work on dailies as your gathering Mote Of Harmony this has an effect on both your GPH through questing and your GPH for production.

I know what your thinking,  Mo,  that's a lot of math there.   What is it really telling us?   As I've said before, your time is valuable when it comes to logging onto Warcraft.   And knowing just where your time is being spent in regards to how much gold your making is just as important as going to the mailbox and gathering the coin.   This has a large effect on players with limited time to play.   Where 30 minutes to some players just the tip of the iceberg for playtime.  Some players only have an hour to get everything done they want too,  including making gold for the future usage.

In no way do I expect people to keep retentive listings of just how long they spend farming,  and how long they spend crafting.   But getting a general look of exactly how you are investing your time can give you hints on maybe switching to another area to obtain a higher GPH.  A higher GPH can place you faster onto the track of getting your goals done.

Just keep in mind one idea.   Do not let formulas completely dictate how you play the auction house game.   Being a Gold Goblin isn't just about plugging in numbers,  it's about knowing your business and knowing what others want.  That takes experience and thinking outside the box.   A formula is a tool,  and a tool is no better than the person using it.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

The Non Crafter Harmony Blues

Mommar here.

When I started writing on this little island found in the great sea of the internet,  I wanted to enable players to think outside the box.   My intentions were to make sure that Gold Goblins expanded their mind to the ability to not just have to be 'go here and farm this' type of gold makers.

But occasionally I see something that was obvious to me,  that a player is doing that makes my head spin just a little bit to say 'huh?'   As I was trucking along finishing up my Loremaster achievement for my shiny Nimbus disc I was chatting with a guild mate of mine.   They had asked me to craft some items for them to raise their ilvl.

As we were chatting I told them that I would need to farm a few Spirits of Harmony for the requirements.   They said that was fine,  but they threw those things away because they were not a crafter on that toon.

Somewhere a couple of kittens just clutched their little chest and flopped on the ground at the sound of those words.   They tossed those poor little Motes of Harmony away like they were worthless.  I wanted to find the ethereal trashcan these poor abandoned motes were at to try to save them.

But seriously,  I explained to them that the best idea was to save these for later use.   There are two vendors (Danke at Shrine of the Two Moons and Krystel at Shrine of Seven Stars) sitting on their little perches ready to grab those hard earned Spirits of Harmony.  They have various BOE items included some crafting items that can be given to alternate crafters or save some gold for personal enhancement needs.

But the best bet to me is to stick those little gold mines into the bank and save them.   Sometime in a future patch the Spirits of Harmony  will probably be made Bind on Equip.  And those will be happy days of trading newly freed Spirits of Harmony on the open market.   It's a long investment of time instead of grabbing the short term benefits of trading for the items from the two vendors.

So as we continued our chat and I sucked back the tears,  poured some root beer out to my spirit homies,  I hoped that just a little information could save my guild mate from future torture and abandonment of poor defenseless Spirits of Harmony.

Just remember,  Save those spirits.  Little Kittens will be proud of you.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

To Level 90.. And Beyond!!!!!!

Many players will end up hitting 90 without finishing all of the quests offered in Mists of Pandaria.   After hitting 90,  getting geared up for raiding and scenerios.  Dailies start to unlock and the joys of World of Farmcraft begin.

But then whats stopping someone from continuing and finishing all the quests?  There are a couple of very good reasons that you should look to finish everything up in the Pandarian continent.

1.   The Lore

Some of the best lore happens in the Dread Waste.   You learn exactly why you should be helping the Klaxxi in the future.   Plus the developers worked very hard on writing an excellent script.   Stop and smell the roses,  or plants or whatever that bush is that they want me to pick next.

2.   You like Gold Right?

As with all the previous expansions,   your gold from quest turn ins are doubled once you hit level 90.   And who doesn't like to get 20-30g per turnin.   Plus with the chances for Bind on Equip drops and item turn ins for vendoring/disenchanting it's free gold.

3.   Spirits of Harmony

For Mastercraft items you will need to farm Spirits of Harmony.  There are many areas in both the Dread Waste and Vale of Eternal Blossom hold excellent sources of farming areas.   Mass amount of beasts and humanoids that spawn one on top of the other.   Each kill will add both to your gold and also your chances of having enough Spirits of Harmony to craft any recipe you want.

4.   Access to higher level equipment.

There is a heavy cost of crafting epic items in Mists of Pandaria.   Blood Spirit is a costly materials to collect for ilvl 496 items.  With the changes for looking for raids disenchanting (no longer will LFR items DE into Blood Spirit it will be even longer before these become common.   The Klaxxi in Dread Waste give access to ilvl 489 level items at Revered which will set you very well into Raid categories.   Finishing the quests in Dread Waste will get you to Honored and unlock another set of Dailies.

5.   Elite rares around this area.

Mists of Pandaria opened up a different type of Elites.  Instead of just being bigger and badder than other mobs,  they gave each of them different abilities.   The Elites in both Dread Wastes and Vale of Eternal Blossoms have some of the most elaborate elites.   They also drop some of the most interesting loot including cooking feasts and rare supplies.

Instead of being bored in your home city,  look to finish up the quests in all the areas of Mists of Pandaria.  Come for the lore,  enjoy the gold and the sites.  And if you see me out there,  wave me in for a good elite kill.  I will bring the beer (root beer of course).

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Long Term Plans

Planning and strategy has added a new dimension to being a gold goblin.   With previous expansions it was much easier to arrive at a certain crafting level,   buy raw materials and then craft items for profit. There was very little planning necessary.   Call it blunt force investing,   it was just necessary to obtain the patterns and go our merry crafting way.

With Mists of Pandaria it has become more important to stay on schedule when it comes to using your crafting timers.  Whether it's Scrolls of Wisdom with scribes,  Living Steel with Alchemist or the Jewel crafting timer to learn new cuts.   Each time one of these timers is missed,  it puts the timing to finish up an epic item one day farther down the road.

Lets look at something from the Inscription epics to show what I mean

Inscribed Crane Staff

Rain Poppy Staff x 1
Starlight Ink  x 20
Scroll of Wisdom x 20
Spirit of Harmony x 5

So if you look at the numbers strictly.   The first 5 Spirits of Harmony you collect are already called for with the crafting pattern.   If you obtain no more than these 5 then it will take a minimum of 20 days to craft the staff.   Once you reach level 90 there are weekly Inscription quests that you can obtain Scrolls of Wisdom as well.  All of those quests require extra Spirits of Harmony to complete.   This is why paying attention to your profession timers and even just taking the 5 minutes to finish them every day can pay off.

The other two timer based items,  Living Steel and your gem research timer for jewel crafting   Both are more forgiving due to the use of Spirits of Harmony for extra transmutes/research.  For players who have their crafters still sitting in main cities, this ends up keeping them only available for the daily crafting/research.

Living Steel also can be purchased to replace lost days,  but is still extremely expensive on multiple servers.   The daily timer and lack of Spirits of Harmony drops keeps these items rare and valuable.  But then rare and valuable also brings a smile of opportunity to a gold goblins eye.

Keeping track of your profession transmutes/research will set you on the right track.  And keeping a disciplined planned attack at crafting will reap rewards as you continue your quest through Pandaria

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Harmony? We Don't need Harmony

For those that have been gold goblins during more than one expansion,  they understand the toils and tribulations of BOP crafting materials.   It puts a damper on production for toons unless they are active in questing and dungeons.   Items such as Frozen Orb,  Chaos Orb and other BOP crafting items drove prices higher and higher.  These Bind on Pickup items hit hard on players who used one or two of their characters the majority of the time.

In later patches all of these became Bind on Equip,  but the first profits from the top were captured by players that were active.  The new Bind on Pickup crafting item is going to end up being Spirit of Harmony.  It's undetermined exactly how Spirit of Harmony drops (some have reported from dungeon drops,  others from basic mobs).   Either way it's obvious that the powers that be at Blizzard do not want their crafters to be sitting in home cities crafting without being active.

This is going to require an adjustment on your daily activity.  By now you should already have a decent idea of which toon you want to level first.   It will become very important to know which toon will allow you the most profit,  while still continuing with your goals towards raiding.

Another option will be to look to drop a profession for another more active one.   Jewelcrafting seems to be immune to the needs of a Spirit of Harmony.  Blacksmiths and Leatherworkers will be in great need to obtain these items for epic pattern manufacturing.   Planning out your strategy now will save you the need to change professions or options later during Mists of Pandaria.

A little paperwork and a little math will set you a long way towards using Spirit of Harmony to put you on top of the gold goblin pack.

Good Luck and Good Hunting.
