Patch 5.4: Golden Lotus Beatdown

Mommar here.

When starting Mists of Pandaria the biggest grind was obtaining revered with the Golden Lotus faction.  It was a long grind of finishing dailies.  After finishing the first set if you had a high enough reputation you could go to the next set.  Ultimately reaching revered and unlocking other quest hubs for Shado-pan and August Cestials.

Patch 5.3 unlocked the necessity to have revered reputation with Golden Lotus to have access to new quest areas.   With 5.4 the Vale of Eternal Blossoms gets a complete remake.   Assuming you call a place that looks like it was blown up with an atom bomb a remake.

The Golden Lotus after patch 5.4 is going to be an old school's reputation beat down.   Elite mobs giving you 200 reputation.  Lesser mobs only give you 5 rep per kill.   But fear not for there are a lot of mobs to kill in the area.

You also have access to the daily farmer order if you have leveled your farm high enough to have access.   Also there are random mobs that drop tokens that will give you rep.  Don't forget to also pick up your Grand Commendation of the Golden Lotus to increase your reputation grinding.

But don't forget to try your hardest to hit exalted before patch 5.4.   The achievement http://www.wowhead.com/achievement=7315/eternally-in-the-vale will not be available after patch 5.4 drops.  And many players are already going to be farming this area for the new Profession patterns.  So there will be a lot of players running around this area killing things that it might become frustrating to get that last couple of mobs to become awesome with The GL Corps (yes,  I said it.).

The patterns are even useful for selling to alternates as well as personal use.  Also remember that with patch 5.4 much of the gear that was available for valor points will now be sold for Justice Points.  This will put a huge boost on newly minted 90 players getting them into raiding that much faster.

Lots of exciting changes are just around the corner with patch 5.4.  Now is the time to push through the boredom and get your lineup set for the last phase of Mists of Pandaria.  Working smarter and not harder is the key to being the best gold goblin you can be.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Four Levels of Wow Activity

A friend of the Journal emailed me and asked me a question.   They wanted to know what I did when I just didn't feel like logging on to wow that day.

I had those days.  Many times it's the edge of being burnt out on the day to day activities that happen with World of Warcraft.   Not wanting to enchant one more scroll.  No interest in crafting one more piece of offer.  The thought of finishing an instance just makes me cringe.

Warning players that this is not a job.   You may have 'responsibilities' that you should do when you decide to log on is one thing.  But the minute that logging on to play a game becomes a job,  that's when it's time to reevaluate just how valuable your time is.

What I ended up doing is setting four different levels of logging on.  Each day might be different depending on what I want to do.

Minimum Day:

This is a day that the only thing I do is burn down my profession timers (Inscription,  Enchanting,  Blacksmithing,  Leatherworking,  Jewelcrafting etc.).   Depending on whether I have the materials at my toons fingertips of having to buy them from the Auction house, this generally takes me 20 minutes to complete.

Average Day:

On this day I'm going to go and finish everything for my minimum day,  plus list 10 items from each profession.  This requires a little knowledge of what has the highest profit margin.  This does not include any new crafting,  just list the top 10 items I have online.   Usually takes me about 30-45 minutes to finish all of these.

Maximum Day:

On one of these days I am finishing up all of my listings for all of my professions.  I might throw in some of the higher profit crafts to make.  Also working on some flips that I see need to be done.  Also included is all of the profession timer burns and also running a few instances.  I allot 1-3 hours for these days.  This also allows me to return to relist items and run instances/farm for points.

Overachiever Day:

These are my marathon sessions.  I have drinks at the ready,  popcorn to graze on and locking in for a long day of leveling,  profession grinding,  crafting,  instance running and buying/selling.   I do allow myself small breaks to refresh my brain when needed.  The longest I've done one of these sessions is 14 hours.  These are the ones I've limited because it feeds into that burn out feeling that happens the longer an expansion matures.

You have every option to decide what time frame works for you.  You might include a farming time that the only thing you do is farm while watching/listening to a movie.  Maybe you're just farming the Auction House for deals and flips without worrying about anything else.  You are in control of your own time allotment.  And your time is just as valuable as your gold is.

Just remember,  this is a game and not a job.  If it becomes a job,  ask for a raise.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Realities Of Making Gold

Mommar here.

Here as well as other journals give high expectations on the huge amounts of gold that can be made in World of Warcraft.  Each technique or though process gives you the chance to obtain gold.  Some of the ideas are easy,  others are much more difficult and eat up your time.

But break down gold making into an exact science is the gold grade for making gold.   To be able to do 4-6 clicks of a mouse and a few wiggles at the auction house is what all players are looking for.   But let's break down exactly how much it requires in gold to make your wants and desires.

Most players do not play every day.  So for example's sake lets assume that players play a total of 180 days a year with an Avg of 1 hour a day.  Yes I fully understand that you play 4 hours a day,  rock the PVP world and grab every gold piece.    Many other players only reach the bare minimum for how much they play,  combining their real lives with their gaming lives.   So here we go:

If you make a minimum of

10g a day  =  1,800 g  a  playing year
(Equals one daily every time you log in).

50g a day =   9,000g a playing year
(Equals one daily quest a day and one random dungeon)

100g a day = 18,000g a playing year
(Equals one daily quest,  one random dungeon and a basic material flip a day)

500g a day = 90,000g a playing year
(Equals and daily quest,  one random dungeon,  basic material and doubling profit for sales)

So on and so forth.   You can see that even if you chucking down 1000g a day every time that you play you can pack 180,000g a year.  This is over and above your repair costs etc.   Making gold in World of Warcraft has never been easier.   So now that I've just shot you need to read this journal in the foot,  why would you want to continue to read?   Because if you can see that making 1000g a day takes a small amount of listing/crafting effort, the skies become the limit on just what you can obtain with a little bit more added effort.  Is 2000g out of line?   3000g?   What is the limit that you set for yourself?

We talk many times about gold and time management.   Getting more for your time buck becomes that much more important when playing this game.  Not just this game but any money based game that is available to play.   The idea is setting up your system to obtain your goal with the least amount of time spent with chores and trivial matters.

Keep this is mind when that gold making goal seems unavailable.  When you set your goal to buy that Fluffy bunny mount that you viewed on the auction house.   It's not about how easy or difficult it is making gold in World of Warcraft,  it is about just how much perseverance you have to show up.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Patch 5.2 Prep: Farming the Auction House

 Mommar here.

The first thing I should say is that I am not completely against the idea of farming materials.   For many it is relaxing to just put the brain on autopilot and grab materials,  kill mobs and overall enjoy a relatively non thinking activity in the world of Azeroth.

For many the holiday season we are in now [Love Is In The Air] has many players sitting in Uldum farming mobs for their lovely Lovely Charm Bracelet for their daily turn ins.   But For Patch 5.2 farming is needed to be increased to be prepared for the high demand.

For myself I prefer looking for materials that are inexpensive from the auction house.  I think it's important to treat the auction house farming the same as actual farming out in the world.   Searching for the nodes and leftovers that players are attempting to get gold in,  looking for easy deals and large amounts of surplus items.

The big reason why auction house farming becomes important is time management.   There are many days that 10 minutes of material searching will give me the same amount of materials that I can obtain from two hours of farming.   This obviously does cut into the bottom line of my crafting profits when I have to invest gold up front.  The measurement is whether your gold investment is more valuable than the time investment in 'normal' material farming.

Now you do have a wrinkle as I said when it regards holidays such as Love is in the Air the easy way is to go and sit around mobs that are quickly destroyed.  But I find that farming mobs in a higher range ends up giving more profits.  Much of my farming in regards to the bracelets are done in instances and my dailies.  By the time I'm finished with all of the dailies and instances I have enough for one to two days full of turn ins.  The rest can be barked for in trade chat for profit.  The farther along and more desperate players get to finish off the turn ins for the holiday the more that can be charged.   I'm still seeing 40-60g per charm bracelet being asked for.

Just keep in mind that planning out your own personal farming strategy is just as important as getting your Best in Slot gear.   Having a plan and executing will allow you to get your farming chores done and still enjoy the world of warcraft.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Time Management With Faction Grinding

Mommar here.

Mists of Pandaria opened up a plethora of factions to obtain experience with.   Golden Lotus,  Klaxxi,  The August Celestials.   All of them have your required door prizes of mounts,  and tabards and even raid quality gear.

But there are so many of them that they can eat up a lot of your time trying to finish them all.   Where you can get a certain amount of gold per turn in of quests,  no one wants to spend hours and hours attempting to finish every daily quest asked from each faction.   With each patch adding more dailies the mountain of reputation becomes impossible to climb.

This is where time management strategy is useful other than just running in to finish dailies.   Figuring out which factions are more beneficial to you and your future gold making will reap benefits quickly.  Blacksmiths will want to work on the Klaxxi to get access to higher level blacksmithing plans including the Masterwork Ghost Forged Blade.

Using resources such as Crafters Tome to plot out not just your mains path for faction leveling but also your
alternate toons.

Keep in mind that each of the factions have a tome that's purchasable at revered that will double the amount of reputation you receive with your other toons on the account.   So if you find yourself needing to double up on rep with future characters paying the price for them will make the reputation grind much easier.

Placing time constraints and concentrating on one or two factions to raise your reputation levels will keep you from getting burnt out on daily quests and allow you to enjoy the other parts of Mists of Pandaria.

The Short List

Mommar here.

JMTC:  Iowa branch got struck by flu bug this week.    There were good times that I was able to put together an article and some days that getting out of bed sounded like a really bad idea.

Included in all of this was a minimum amount of logging on World of Warcraft.   But out of this lack of will to log on to finish up anything but the basic chores it reminded me of time management.

Whenever you look to start or even continue your gold making career.   Time management is the first thing to check off on your list to master.   There are days that you will only be able to log on for a little bit that day.   Other days you will have some extra time to work before having to go to family functions.   Then there are thos magic days that the family is out,  clouds part and you have all day to longue around and work at your own pace.

Myself,  I have three different sets of tasks to perform depending on my time constraints and ability to invest.

Short:  (30 minutes)

I only do my three transmutes/daily crafts (Inscription,  Jewelcrafting, Alchemy).  If I have any time I will do a quick scan of the auction house for quick purchases to flip.

Medium (1-3 hours)

I choose 2 to 3 of my top selling crafters and do their normal listing routine and crafting.   If I only have 1 hour then I use the top seller as the number 1 priority.   Second hour I work with the number two seller down the list.

Long  (3+ Hours)

This obviously is a full listing of all of my auctions,   crafting items that will sell (PVP,  weapons, speciality enhancements).  Also included is my scanning for items to flip for a profit and resetting any markets that need to be rebalanced for added sales.

The time frames are estimates.  Many gold goblins don't want to spend three hours working on Auction house sales.   There are days that I have three plus hours to play that I just look do to a short day and then go to finish up dailies.  These are always dependent on your own adjustments.

Setting your own time management expectations will allow you to work quicker and more effectively in both short and long term time investments.

Good Luck and Good Hunting
