Patch 5.2: Know They Economy

Mommar here.

As myself and many players are prepping for Patch 5.2 and the explosion of changes,   I wanted to talk to you about some of the basics.

I believe it is just as important to not just point at what to buy,  what to sell or resell but also important to know what drives every economy.   The players and expectations of buyers and sellers behind the scenes.

As an expansion matures the goals of the players change along with the days and expectations.  Whether the economy is slow in some sorts or more robust.  Playing to the strengths and weaknesses of the server becomes just as important as what to stock for the next patch.

With the new patch there will be lots of opportunities in each discipline.   The key to being on top is to know what others will want.  If you have a large collection of tanks and DPS specs that have Leatherworking requirements,  placing your emphasis on crafting and knowledge of Leatherworking becomes an asset.  If you have many plate wearers that are looking for materials,  then your knowledge and technique becomes your driving force for sales.

But also look at bucking the trends.  There are many different items available just simply because they are abandoned by others.   Many engineers bemuse sales and what isn't seen as big ticket items but the sales of Ghost Iron Dragonling to leveling players still go strong.

Look to see what is selling,  and what is also preparing to be sold.  Keeping your eyes open both in instances and in town can give you just where an economy is going.   Sales are not a guesswork for a server but a complete view of how the entity lives.

Keep your head above the flow and know your server.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Sales Triage

Mommar here.

If you have ever skinned your knee or played a sport you understand a little bit about triage and prioritizing
wounds.   Treating a small cut before treating a more impactful wound doesn't help in the long run.  It could cause the one wound to become infected and worsen.

The same thing can be looked at in your sales.   Any person who sales they never lose money is either selling you something or playing things safe.    Being a gold goblin sometime entails risks.  High risk can mean high reward.  But it also can cause wound that need to be treated.   And too many wounds your empire can start a downward spiral.

This is where Triage economics can come into play.   If your seeing your fortune not growing or even diminishing you should perform a short quick diagnosis to the problem.   Where exactly are you losing gold at?  What items are not selling quickly and profitably?   Which of your items is sitting on the shelf only to be liquidated at the end of their value life?

Triggering a quick fix to these can cause your downward spiral to turn around.   If you are listing items at too high,  being dependent on quoted prices from different websites.  Look to see whether your economy can support that.   Are you cutting raw gems into pure stat gems (+str,  +int, + agi) only to see them sell low and get undercut continually.   Perhaps cutting mixed gems (+main attribute and +secondary attribute) can provide you with more opportunity for sales and profit.

Identifying where a wound is and fixing it quickly can keep your sales from becoming infected,  allowing you to continue at full speed instead of languishing slowly from diseased income.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Anonymous Gold Goblin

Mommar here.

I firmly believe that your reputation in making gold is just as important as the techniques that you use.   Whether you choose to manipulate the market,  or grind out gold.   Your reputation is how players look at you on the open market.   The more friends you have the more you are apt to be told about major changes in the market.   The more enemies you have puts you in the place to have more financial assassins looking to put your pelt on their imaginary wall.

This is one of the reasons that I spread my sales across different accounts.   With the major players in online information having access to exactly what someone will post almost immediately,  it does not take long for players to black list your toon or to attack your strategies head on.

Black listing is provided in many addons to allow you to either ignore or target a players auctions.   They will know exactly how much you listed an item for and if they have the ability can craft or list the same item cheaper.   White listing allows a player to make sure that you never undercut or challenge a friendly player.  Many of the major auction house suites (TSM, Auctioneer) have a version of this strategy.

Even if a player doesn't use these in their day to day auction house chores.   A mental list of who to trade with and who not to trade with exists on every server.   If you have ever spent time in trade chat you will have someone put up a creative add only to see 3-5 players yell "scam" or "he did x to me and robbed me".  That is the black list that every server provides.

It isn't that difficult to track alternates for a player.  Many websites link both mains and alternates on a server or even cross servers.  Most players don't want to take the time to do this much research.  The more difficult you make it to track who is selling what from your account,  the more apt you are to stay under the radar.

When i started writing this journal I knew that I would become a target of sorts.   Players would both look for my auctions and challenge my listing.  Or they would out and out black list me because I was "changing the economy".   Even a couple of game masters have asked how I got this much gold on my accounts.  I told them exactly how I did it.

Every transaction and every event gold related can raise and lower your reputation to both your server and other players.  Spreading out your sales will keep your competition wondering and keep you from becoming a target from malicious players.   Allowing you to keep the gold flowing into your accounts.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

BMAH Blues Return

Mommar here.

When the Black Market Auction House was introduced with Mists of Pandaria,  there were rumblings in the universe that it would even out the playing field between the gold haves and have nots.

Up til the introduction of Patch 5.1 it was a good tool implemented by the powers that be at Blizzard to remove tremendous amounts of gold from the economy.  Players were bidding thousands and thousands of gold on patterns and very rare mounts.   The plan to stabilize the economy was well on it's way to completion.

Then with Patch 5.1 a new little toy was introduced.   An invitation to an exclusive Brawlers guild.   Everyone loves to be the first in line for something exclusive.   So players bid ten thousand,   twenty thousand to have one of the rare....   well kinda rare.... maybe rare?   When you have 10 invites every 12 hours for bid plus the ability to farm them from different faction NPCS just how rare can they truly be?

But here is the problem that wasn't expected.    Before patch 5.1 there were three slots to fill each rotation on the BMAH.   One was generally a pet (mostly the argent dawn pets),  one was usually either a PVP gear item or a PVE Epic.   The last was generally filled by a BOP pattern.   This gave enough inclination for players to bid and continue to remove gold from the economy.  Now with 10 Blood Soaked Invitations for bid at any one time,   there seems to be only one slot available for bidding and on many servers it seems to be only that one pet few if any want.

I have been skeptic from the start at just how the BMAH would be taken by the gold goblin economy.   Most players who have worked with the economy understand that when you buy something from someone they in turn will buy something from someone else.   This keeps the gold flow coming,  eventually if things are done right coming back to your coffers.   The 'dead end' bidding of the BMAH wouldn't help the wow economy to flourish but would depress bidding on the BMAH.   Now that the majority of slots are filled with the invitations,  the BMAH is starting to become irrelevant to the economy.   There is still the chance that an epic pet or needed item will show up.  But I will not be surprised if a revamping of the BMAH is done in a future patch.   Or the goals of the BMAH will have to be changed.

Either way, hopefully everyone got their invitations to the Brawlers Guild dance and recital.   I've got a banana peel with your name on it.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Rock Star Pricing

Mommar here.

As JMTC in snow bound camp Iowa starts to get into the Christmas spirit.   The crew are drawn to the idea of pricing as it's found in the retail stores.

Most people don't search by who is listing an item.   They look specifically for what is the cheapest they can get an item,  and it's value to them.   Whether it's a vanity pet or the sword of uber smackdown.   Players want the biggest bang for their buck.   Which is why undercutting of items becomes very popular.

But a shrewed gold goblin can determine exactly what pricing they are willing to go on an item.   It's a very simple idea but has spectacular benefits.   Determining your bare bones minimum profit point allows you to know exactly where you can price an item and still not lose gold.   Then you can build your listing to exactly how much your server market is willing to pay for something.

Some items such as raw materials are more dependent on the ebb and flow of the server economy.  Once one player starts to undercut for something like [Ghost Iron Ore] then there is a long line of players that will be undercutting to be the first ones to sell their items.

Individual in demand items can become much more important in the gold making arena.  High quality items where there are only two or three of them on the Auction House can be manipulated more,  keeping a closer line to your profit margin.   Even listing a high sales item 10-20 times can net you a large amount of profit for just the 30 seconds or less of listing and relisting.

I have written the idea in stone that information is what determines your future Gold Goblin status.   Being a rock star at pricing means to know exactly that breaking point where the economy will glance over your item and call it unbuyable.   Or setting such a price that a player has to have it at exactly the cost that makes both you and them very happy with the purchase.

Good Luck and Good Hunting
