Lost In The Guild Traffic

A long time ago in a far far far away expansion I used to raid consistently.   This was well before the times of Looking for raid check boxes.   There were two types of raids.  Guild raids and the random pick up raids that happened in trade chat.   I'm keeping from going through the including of having to walk 5 miles uphill in 6 foot of snow to get to those raids.  I'm old what can i tell you.

Many guilds have switched from a your on your own type of raid preparation to much more organization for potions,  weapons and crafting materials.   If you have a well prepared guild there really is no need for gold per see since the higher guild levels allow money to be deposited automatically in the guild bank.

But there is still a necessity to make sure that someone knows who does what.   I still find it interesting to see in my guild where people aren't completely familiar with what crafts player have.   Many guilds switched to a website system where the patterns they have are listed.   Having a simple pad and paper can save you lot of hunting to see who can do what.

All of my guild mates who actually pay attention know that they just need to drop material in the mail and ask me to craft it and the odds are I will do it for them.  If you have been keeping up with my writings and missives you know I do not charge Guildees for these types of services.   I fleece the unsuspecting to be able to provide for those I like (just kidding,  a little bit).

So the question I would ask is where is your niche in making gold?   Whether you are just starting your gold goblin ways or are experienced.  Do you still offer a slot to the guild to help?    Are you a gold expert to help the new guild members have a stable amount of gold for repairs?   Do you have the slot of craftsmen to prepare players needs and gear?   Are you just the information post that people can go to to know where to get things done?   Or do you even show up and say anything?   Are you lost to your guild because they have no idea what you bring to the table?

Being a guild member and being a gold goblin are very similar.  If your name and your items are not on every ones lists of needs,  then you are easily forgotten to others.  Others that may not be as experienced as you or have your capabilities.   The only way to know is to put yourself out there and make yourself known.

And that does not mean a little naked mail box dancing isn't fun also.

The Go To Gold Goblin???

Mommar here.

Every so often I get myself into trouble when it comes to my guild.   No,  I don't run out yelling Mommar jenkins at the start of a raid (I've done it once.   5 minutes of laughter followed as we wiped horribly).

What does occur is the fact that as a guild we share a lot of ideas on gold making.  I was not the first in my guild to make a considered effort to make a cubic butt-ton of gold.   There were those that had decent profits even at the beginning of Vanilla Warcraft.    The entire guild has a good amount of Gold Goblins sitting around playing the game as well as cashing in on their crafting and financial savvy.

What can get me into trouble is that a few of my guild mates know i write a blog on Warcraft gold making.  In their helpful ways they will suggest from time to time ideas on what I should write about.   Many times they are article ideas that are in the planning stages or being researched (yes,  I actually do a little research from time to time).   Other times they are little jabs at what I'm writing about.   Taking these jabs in stride and denying the requests for loans from guild mates does make Warcraft life a little bit more exciting.

So the question is have you presented yourself as being the go to goblin for your guild?   It's easy to drop a few bucks in guild mates hands to buy something they want.    But showing them some of your ideas you have learned.   Getting them into the gravy train you have built for your own crafting and flipping ideas can endear yourself to them faster than just handing over the goods and saying here you go.

There is a saying that take a man to fish and they will eat for a day,  but teach them to fish and they will eat for the rest of their life.  And in today's Warcraft economy,   a player without the means or methods to make their own gold is at a distinct disadvantage to the other players on a server.

Patch Me Now

Mommar Here.

On tuesday there is a high probability (not a guarantee) that patch 5.1 will go live on the servers.   With this patch there is some new content added (including the before mentioned Brawlers Guild and a new group of quests to create a landing site for the horde in Krasarang Wilds.  If you want a preview of the daily quests and rewards that will become live with the new patch,  wowinsider has a very nice preview and listing for everything having to do with the new offensive here.

With every patch there generally is a quick change to the market.   New items that drop from new raids and content will need to get enchants and enhancements.  Players will want to add or subtract gems to their gear to obtain the best chances for survival.

For Gold Goblins this is also the last pre-patch time to prepare for the patch by buying materials to sell when the servers restart.  This patch does not have any big market items that are obvious to hold and sell for large profits.  Your base materials for all of the different crafters will be in demand at the start.   So make sure to take a few extra minutes before you go to bed tuesday to see if there are any quick deals in enchanting materials or raw Blacksmithing/Leatherworking materials.

But also remember that for now there is no complete guarantee the patch will go live tuesday morning.   Until the servers come back up for play or the powers that be acknowledge that it is patch day Gold Goblins should keep their business at an even keel.

Also don't forget that with any patch to keep your auction house based addons updated.   Before logging on checking with Curse.com or Wowinterface.com can save you a lot of heartache at the start.

Know Their Roles

Mommar here (as if it would be someone else)

There is one constant when your dealing with World of Warcraft.  Every interaction you have with someone is a possible chance to sell.  Whether it's a direct sale request from a guild member,  or with a complete stranger from Trade Chat.  Each time you contact someone,   the opportunity to sell or invest is there.

One of these places is Heroic Dungeons.   Heroic Dungeons are where players are getting geared up for raiding.  When a piece drops that they need and win,  that is the best opportunity to find out if they need an enhancement.  If it's a healing piece and your a tailor,   have a good healing thread ready to sell.   Leatherworkers can have armor patches all ready to sell in a moments notice.  Jewelcrafters should have their blanks ready to cut and sell to the winner.

This can also be looked at a good opportunity for advertisement.   Cutting a deal with a player in a Heroic can advertise your business just as good as barking in trade chat.  Many players like to work with one or two players instead of having to run around finding the character enhancements for their toons.

The other point of this is to have knowledge of what is going to be the best for that player.  A tailor will fit a piece of wardrobe for a new customer each time.   An excellent tailor will know when to crease and fold that same wardrobe to make it stunning.  Your knowledge base on what the best DPS item or Healing item can reward you with added gold in the long term.

Every contact is a potential sale.  Every piece of knowledge puts you one step closer to your ultimate Gold Goblin Goal.

BMAH Strikes Back

Mommar here.

It finally happened.  The day that I have been dreading since the mechanics of the Black Market Auction House was announced.

Let me give you a little back story    If you have read my writings you know that I've been playing World of Warcraft for over 7 years.   Ever since the introduction of Burning Crusades there was one mount that I learned about that made me drool over and over again.

The Reins of the Raven Lord drops from Sethekk Halls in a special boss (in the beginning you had to carry a druid into your party that was going for their epic flying form or already had finished it).   In a later 4.01 patch the developers made this boss accessible by everyone.

I wanted this mount very badly.   It looked regal and screamed of awesome in every way.   And knowing how rare of a drop that the mount was made me want it even more.  So I grabbed every run I could,  if my guild said anything about running Sethekk Halls (or as I referred to it Sexy Halls) I was there.  Tanking or dps or carrying everyone's bags.

When the instance became solo-able I started running it ever day (Heroics had a one day lockout),  with many guildees noticing I was in Sexy Halls once again.  It became my ritual and even my addiction.   One time brought a friend in there to run it.   The day had come,  and I had my first chance at the mount I dreamed about.   Unfortunately I lost the roll to my friend.

So my trek continued.  Day after day I lugged myself into Sethekk Halls because the mount would be mine.  O yes it would be mine.    After 256 attempts (yes,  I actually looked it up) the mount finally dropped.  I giggled like a madman,  learned the mount and then exited the instance for the last time.

It has been a tradition of mine that when I get a new shiny mount I will run semi nekkid through all the main cities.   Call it my own personal celebration of sorts.  I got whistles and cheers and even some flack from other players but I really didn't care.

So fast forward to today when on the Black Market Auction House I see Reins of the Raven Lord for sale.   The bid was low (15k to start) but still a little tinge of disappointment crossed my mind.   I've always been a strange duck when it comes to items.   I don't like to buy items that are still available if I have the patience and tenacity to obtain them on my own.   The journey to me is just as important as the destination.   But that does not remove the opportunity for others to have one of the most beautiful mounts in Warcraft at a price they are willing to pay.

At some point every Gold Goblin decides what something is valued to themselves.   Their personal trinkets that add up to enjoyment.   That favorite mount that allows them to strut to their next quest in style.  Or even their costume that brings out the pirate accent in their mind.   All players decide the value of something whether it's gold or hard work.   Both are enjoyable in their own way.

So next time you see me strutting around on my Raven Lord mount,   give a wave and a smile and then figure out which trinket you have that your willing to obtain in your own way.

Really?

There is an old saying that goes an expert is someone who knows just a little bit more than you.   I've kept this journal for the most part as being a gold making journal.  When it comes to improving tanking and dps,  I know just enough to be dangerous and to do adequate in raids.

With that in mind I tend to keep my mouth shut inside of instances and raids unless it is impractical to keep quiet.  This ranges from players running around in circles to someone trying to tank with a fishing pole.  But there does seem to be a small percentage of players who feel the need to 'improve' everyone in a group.

Today's case was my last chance to obtain the Horseman's Helm last night during the Hallow's Eve event.   Tank was holding aggro just fine,  healing was up to snuff.  Dps was chugging along then all of a sudden someone decided to announce to the tank that 'stacking stam is so vanilla wow'.

To most this isn't a big deal.   Even to me it isn't that important when it comes to my day to day Warcraft 'career'.  But it did spark a little bit of thought in my mind.  I have never understood the need to players to call out others in groups for what they perceive is wrong.   I have seen some screwed up gem configurations as I've played wow.  From DPS stacking Parry gems to tanks running on intellect gems.   All players that could take constructive advice,  even to the point of offering them replacement gems if I had some in my inventory.

But the idea of calling someone out in public and trying to embarrass them is beyond my though process.   Perhaps it's the idea that I'm comfortable with who I am.  Not needing to stomp over people metaphorically in an imaginary field of game play   I do not feel the need to yell,  scream,  stomp or curse someone out for a mistake they have made.   I am not graced with omniscience to know their story.  They might be having a bad day and made a mistake in gearing.

The long and short of it is that it is not worth my personal view of myself, or my sense of honor to try to make someone feel bad about themselves.  The anonymous lifestyle of online games prevents most players from getting verbally smacked in real life.   So a player acting like a jackass gets away with it relatively scott from.   But at somepoint personal responsibility and even public retribution plays a part in how someone views others.

There are players on any realm that have reputations for being good people.  They give away enchants for free,  help players the right way with constructive advice.   There are others with the reputations that scream for them to be avoided.  Sooner or later actions catch up with players.   The World of Warcraft is not big enough to be completely anonymous.

So next time you decide the tank sucks,  take it to guild chat or better yet stuff it in your pocket.  If it is so bad that your seeing red,  leave the raid or dungeon and queue up again.   Your reputation will thank you in the end.

Arrow to the Knee

A Half Hobbled Mommar here.

As my guild was running around doing some easy raids to get back into the teamwork function of playing,  someone had made a joke about dying and getting an 'arrow in the knee'.

I found this more amusing than I probably should have.  About a year and a half ago I was in a car accident that damaged my left knee.    Not a big thing but over the next year it got steadily worse and worse.   So yesterday I ended up having a knee scope to help clear up some of the damage.   It was a day procedure but I came home and started recovery.

So why do I tell you about this?   Because no matter what you see in the game of Warcraft   That hot looking troll dancing on the mailbox for tips,  or that mouthy toad in trade chat that's egging on for attention.   You never know the story that someone might be carrying with them behind the keyboard.

People will be people no matter what you do and how you react.   The reaction that comes normal might be exactly what they are looking for.  Craving the attention both good and bad as long as it's directed towards them.   It's a nature of the beast when it comes to playing a social game.  How you react to their demands is what is revealed about your character.

This isn't myself climbing on my soapbox and preaching to the masses.  That isn't my style.  But every so often I want people to see Warcraft not just for a pixel infested micro society.  I want them to view it in different ways.  For some it's a way to escape the pain of having to recover from an injury,  or to be able to enjoy some relaxation from a stressful life.   For some it can be an addiction that has to become treated.  But behind every person that we want to call 'noob' or 'moron',  there lives someone that is just like us.

Just keep this in mind that as we progress through Mists of Pandaria and beyond,  we truly are in this all together whether we like it or not.   So keep your head in the game and sometimes,  saying nothing might be saying more than is necessary.

How Not to Influence People

I've been told in my life that I do not deal well with stupidity.  Now stupidity tends to find itself in many different forms and cadences.  Whether it's the guy at the door trying to convert me to a religion that I have no interest in,  or the person at the counter at the local store asking dumb questions.  I tend to not handle stupid very well.

I received an email from a reader discussing a situation that they had run into.  They being a fellow gold goblin had posted up some herbs at a reasonably selling price.   Instead of the player deciding to politely ask if that was their intention,  they decided to berate them.   Including some name calling and crass remarks.

Having played this game for many years,  it still surprises me from time to time the reality that just because someone is anonymous does not give them the right to act like the north end of a south bound donkey.  Each of the lessons that I try to teach on this journal is meant to be executed with a certain amount of decorum and dare I say honor.   As has been said many times,  there are players behind the keyboard with feelings and emotions.

When I started playing World of Warcraft I was a mess.   While not going into specifics I was a proverbial hermit that didn't go out that often.   I spent more time in my house than is normally to be expected of a grown man.  It was my safety and my kingdom with limited social interaction.   At the time I was recovering form a physical injury so I wasn't into the bar scene,  or the gaming scene or anything other than books and the occasional chat room.

I had just started a vigorous rehabilitation schedule with a lot of downtime for recovery.  So a friend of mine suggested I look at playing World of Warcraft for recreation and also for the possibility of social interaction. Five years later I still play,  and have become very vehement to my defense of the human nature of players behind the game.

So when I hear of stories such as this is turns my stomach.   In the long run all of these herbs, and ore and epic items and such are just pixels and complicated mathematics on a digitized screen.  They are not real and have no direct effect on how we live life.  But our attitudes and our reactions do have an effect on people.  Whether it is in the positive or the negative of the situation.

I proceeded to explain my viewpoint to the writer that it was more apt this person was having an ulterior motive for their uncouth behavior.  The odds were that the offender wanted them to pull their auctions and post at a higher rate so that they could undercut her.   Later did I found out my supposition was correct.

So why share this with you?   Because I never want my words and my actions to make it seem that gold goblin behaviors would ever encompass this type of attitude.  To be a real gold goblin does not mean that you just make the most gold you can.  It means that you hold yourself up to a higher standard of the game.   You become a diplomat of sorts to not just the gold,  but to the spirit of the game.   Everyone has every right to play the game as they want.   But i would hope that the first lesson that is learned from reading these writings is that we are all human,  and should be treated as such.  Otherwise,  it's time to take a quick look at your life and your values and decide whether you are truly gold goblin material.

Good Luck and Good Hunting.

Welcome to the Cult

Welcome to the cult of the gold goblin my recruits.  You'll find the dues are low,  and the expectations are high.  Our members demand large amounts of gold.   They also demand information,  and a little bit of humor involved.   Mistakes will be made,  but they will not be repeated.  Membership is always optional,  but once you get in,  you can never get out.

There are times that I can make gold making into a cult like belief.   Between changing attitudes and looking at the difference between a gold goblin and someone floundering in their own lack of options.   And at times it probably even comes off that someone has to be the heavy.

Passing on information is enjoyable to me.  Whether it's by something humorous that has occurred in my journey.  Something that crosses my mind at the speed of thought,  or just something that I want to discuss.   Information is the key to enjoying making gold.  We can easily accomplish our goals with a few new techniques.  What makes us gold goblins is that we can share those beliefs with others,  and allow them to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Little tidbits get put out every day with this site.   Do I believe that every time I post something up that it's gold?   Not really,  that would be egotistical of me.   What I do hope to share is to tilt your thought process in a different direction.  To see investments as not just a chore,  but also as a chance to stretch your prowess.  Stretch your abilities to become better in the World of Warcraft.  Occasionally you might even be able to apply what you have learned in Warcraft to your real life.   That is when we truly become a cult for good.

Good luck and Good Hunting
