Patch 5.2 Prep: Will players be returning?

The burnout of Mists of Pandaria hit much quicker than most expected.    Perhaps it was the huge amount of dailies that were seemingly required to keep up with the proverbial Joneses.   Or players running out of options after they had alread leveled one or two toons.     Older guilds seemed to be slowing down or even disappearing off the world stage.

5.2 is shaping up to bring a new spark to play.  With a brand new zone and more story lines those that enjoy reading the story throughout will be whisked back into a game that for many already became stale.

This is where Gold Goblins can look to take advantage again for players returning for another bite of the Mists of Pandaria apple.  Gear will again end up being important to get players raid ready as quick as possible.   And with the announcement that there will not be be the ability to fly in the new zone (everyone remembers Burning Crusade and the Blood Elf zones) it should bring a new burst of excitement for gear and enhancements.

If you haven't already started gathering and saving materials for your enhancement crafts,  now is an excellent time to get started.   From Belt buckles to leg armor to even gems,  looking for deals and ready to flip when the doors open to the new areas will put you on top of the Gold Goblin list.

More info gets reported with the PTRs,  and with sales of Raw gems stumbling now would be a good idea to look to get some farming under your belt.   Maxxing out your Valor Points will help to get you geared up quicker than before.   There hasn't been any announcement on points resetting (generally for the patches they do not reset) so making sure you're staying at the max (3000) and spending them accordingly will keep you in the game.

Lost In The Guild Traffic

A long time ago in a far far far away expansion I used to raid consistently.   This was well before the times of Looking for raid check boxes.   There were two types of raids.  Guild raids and the random pick up raids that happened in trade chat.   I'm keeping from going through the including of having to walk 5 miles uphill in 6 foot of snow to get to those raids.  I'm old what can i tell you.

Many guilds have switched from a your on your own type of raid preparation to much more organization for potions,  weapons and crafting materials.   If you have a well prepared guild there really is no need for gold per see since the higher guild levels allow money to be deposited automatically in the guild bank.

But there is still a necessity to make sure that someone knows who does what.   I still find it interesting to see in my guild where people aren't completely familiar with what crafts player have.   Many guilds switched to a website system where the patterns they have are listed.   Having a simple pad and paper can save you lot of hunting to see who can do what.

All of my guild mates who actually pay attention know that they just need to drop material in the mail and ask me to craft it and the odds are I will do it for them.  If you have been keeping up with my writings and missives you know I do not charge Guildees for these types of services.   I fleece the unsuspecting to be able to provide for those I like (just kidding,  a little bit).

So the question I would ask is where is your niche in making gold?   Whether you are just starting your gold goblin ways or are experienced.  Do you still offer a slot to the guild to help?    Are you a gold expert to help the new guild members have a stable amount of gold for repairs?   Do you have the slot of craftsmen to prepare players needs and gear?   Are you just the information post that people can go to to know where to get things done?   Or do you even show up and say anything?   Are you lost to your guild because they have no idea what you bring to the table?

Being a guild member and being a gold goblin are very similar.  If your name and your items are not on every ones lists of needs,  then you are easily forgotten to others.  Others that may not be as experienced as you or have your capabilities.   The only way to know is to put yourself out there and make yourself known.

And that does not mean a little naked mail box dancing isn't fun also.

The Go To Gold Goblin???

Mommar here.

Every so often I get myself into trouble when it comes to my guild.   No,  I don't run out yelling Mommar jenkins at the start of a raid (I've done it once.   5 minutes of laughter followed as we wiped horribly).

What does occur is the fact that as a guild we share a lot of ideas on gold making.  I was not the first in my guild to make a considered effort to make a cubic butt-ton of gold.   There were those that had decent profits even at the beginning of Vanilla Warcraft.    The entire guild has a good amount of Gold Goblins sitting around playing the game as well as cashing in on their crafting and financial savvy.

What can get me into trouble is that a few of my guild mates know i write a blog on Warcraft gold making.  In their helpful ways they will suggest from time to time ideas on what I should write about.   Many times they are article ideas that are in the planning stages or being researched (yes,  I actually do a little research from time to time).   Other times they are little jabs at what I'm writing about.   Taking these jabs in stride and denying the requests for loans from guild mates does make Warcraft life a little bit more exciting.

So the question is have you presented yourself as being the go to goblin for your guild?   It's easy to drop a few bucks in guild mates hands to buy something they want.    But showing them some of your ideas you have learned.   Getting them into the gravy train you have built for your own crafting and flipping ideas can endear yourself to them faster than just handing over the goods and saying here you go.

There is a saying that take a man to fish and they will eat for a day,  but teach them to fish and they will eat for the rest of their life.  And in today's Warcraft economy,   a player without the means or methods to make their own gold is at a distinct disadvantage to the other players on a server.

Patch Me Now

Mommar Here.

On tuesday there is a high probability (not a guarantee) that patch 5.1 will go live on the servers.   With this patch there is some new content added (including the before mentioned Brawlers Guild and a new group of quests to create a landing site for the horde in Krasarang Wilds.  If you want a preview of the daily quests and rewards that will become live with the new patch,  wowinsider has a very nice preview and listing for everything having to do with the new offensive here.

With every patch there generally is a quick change to the market.   New items that drop from new raids and content will need to get enchants and enhancements.  Players will want to add or subtract gems to their gear to obtain the best chances for survival.

For Gold Goblins this is also the last pre-patch time to prepare for the patch by buying materials to sell when the servers restart.  This patch does not have any big market items that are obvious to hold and sell for large profits.  Your base materials for all of the different crafters will be in demand at the start.   So make sure to take a few extra minutes before you go to bed tuesday to see if there are any quick deals in enchanting materials or raw Blacksmithing/Leatherworking materials.

But also remember that for now there is no complete guarantee the patch will go live tuesday morning.   Until the servers come back up for play or the powers that be acknowledge that it is patch day Gold Goblins should keep their business at an even keel.

Also don't forget that with any patch to keep your auction house based addons updated.   Before logging on checking with Curse.com or Wowinterface.com can save you a lot of heartache at the start.

Really?

There is an old saying that goes an expert is someone who knows just a little bit more than you.   I've kept this journal for the most part as being a gold making journal.  When it comes to improving tanking and dps,  I know just enough to be dangerous and to do adequate in raids.

With that in mind I tend to keep my mouth shut inside of instances and raids unless it is impractical to keep quiet.  This ranges from players running around in circles to someone trying to tank with a fishing pole.  But there does seem to be a small percentage of players who feel the need to 'improve' everyone in a group.

Today's case was my last chance to obtain the Horseman's Helm last night during the Hallow's Eve event.   Tank was holding aggro just fine,  healing was up to snuff.  Dps was chugging along then all of a sudden someone decided to announce to the tank that 'stacking stam is so vanilla wow'.

To most this isn't a big deal.   Even to me it isn't that important when it comes to my day to day Warcraft 'career'.  But it did spark a little bit of thought in my mind.  I have never understood the need to players to call out others in groups for what they perceive is wrong.   I have seen some screwed up gem configurations as I've played wow.  From DPS stacking Parry gems to tanks running on intellect gems.   All players that could take constructive advice,  even to the point of offering them replacement gems if I had some in my inventory.

But the idea of calling someone out in public and trying to embarrass them is beyond my though process.   Perhaps it's the idea that I'm comfortable with who I am.  Not needing to stomp over people metaphorically in an imaginary field of game play   I do not feel the need to yell,  scream,  stomp or curse someone out for a mistake they have made.   I am not graced with omniscience to know their story.  They might be having a bad day and made a mistake in gearing.

The long and short of it is that it is not worth my personal view of myself, or my sense of honor to try to make someone feel bad about themselves.  The anonymous lifestyle of online games prevents most players from getting verbally smacked in real life.   So a player acting like a jackass gets away with it relatively scott from.   But at somepoint personal responsibility and even public retribution plays a part in how someone views others.

There are players on any realm that have reputations for being good people.  They give away enchants for free,  help players the right way with constructive advice.   There are others with the reputations that scream for them to be avoided.  Sooner or later actions catch up with players.   The World of Warcraft is not big enough to be completely anonymous.

So next time you decide the tank sucks,  take it to guild chat or better yet stuff it in your pocket.  If it is so bad that your seeing red,  leave the raid or dungeon and queue up again.   Your reputation will thank you in the end.

Arrow to the Knee

A Half Hobbled Mommar here.

As my guild was running around doing some easy raids to get back into the teamwork function of playing,  someone had made a joke about dying and getting an 'arrow in the knee'.

I found this more amusing than I probably should have.  About a year and a half ago I was in a car accident that damaged my left knee.    Not a big thing but over the next year it got steadily worse and worse.   So yesterday I ended up having a knee scope to help clear up some of the damage.   It was a day procedure but I came home and started recovery.

So why do I tell you about this?   Because no matter what you see in the game of Warcraft   That hot looking troll dancing on the mailbox for tips,  or that mouthy toad in trade chat that's egging on for attention.   You never know the story that someone might be carrying with them behind the keyboard.

People will be people no matter what you do and how you react.   The reaction that comes normal might be exactly what they are looking for.  Craving the attention both good and bad as long as it's directed towards them.   It's a nature of the beast when it comes to playing a social game.  How you react to their demands is what is revealed about your character.

This isn't myself climbing on my soapbox and preaching to the masses.  That isn't my style.  But every so often I want people to see Warcraft not just for a pixel infested micro society.  I want them to view it in different ways.  For some it's a way to escape the pain of having to recover from an injury,  or to be able to enjoy some relaxation from a stressful life.   For some it can be an addiction that has to become treated.  But behind every person that we want to call 'noob' or 'moron',  there lives someone that is just like us.

Just keep this in mind that as we progress through Mists of Pandaria and beyond,  we truly are in this all together whether we like it or not.   So keep your head in the game and sometimes,  saying nothing might be saying more than is necessary.

The Measure Of A Goblin

Mommar here.

As I was doing some smelting of trillium ore to make Trillium Bars,  the guild I belong too started talking about being Warcraft rich.

Everyone has a different level of what they consider being rich in Warcraft or not.   Some players will believe that once they hit the million gold mark that they are rich.  Others are happy with the idea of having 100,000 gold in their grubby goblin hands.

Each person sets their own expectations,   reaches them and then has the choice of expanding those expectations or being satisfied with what they have achieved.    The important part is that it is a self belief and not something that is set by someone else.

As the discussion continued the guild member talked about having 2 guild banks full of items.   That was his level of being Warcraft rich.   Being the sarcastic instigator I can be at times,  I chirped in about 2 guild banks being a little bit of slacking off to me (I currently have 5 guild banks across 6 toons).  Still being the champ at killing a conversation boss the discussion moved onto other topics.

After finishing my ore smelting (yes,  he who smelt it dealt it) I took a look again at just where everything was spread out.   I was determining for myself whether I do consider myself Warcraft rich and a true gold goblin.   This was not a matter of measuring between other players,  but just looking at my own goals and what I intend to do with the rest of Mists of Pandaria expansion and beyond.

After looking at the daily totals for gold,   I saw once again that where I could hold my head up high and give myself a pat on the back.   Tomorrow would be a new day and setting new goals is what would push me beyond where I was now.

So measure your own goals for today.   Look at where you want to be at tomorrow,  and enjoy the ride and where you have been.  Each day is a new goal and a new expectation.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

The Vikings Are Upon Us....

Mommar here.

It's the weekend for all of us,   except those that have to work through the weekend and get their days off on Tuesday (my sympathies).    It's a little under two weeks since the release of Mists of Pandaria.   The first full weekend where raiding guilds will start to sharpen their skills for the race to more loot.

As gold goblins it will be very important to have all of our shiny goodies out to sell.   High level enchants,  Leg armors and shoulder inscriptions.  Perfect cut and blue level gems ready to be sold at high profits.

The weekend tends to become up and down when it comes to raw materials.   Buying early in the morning and then reselling later during the day when players are enhancing gear they have earned in dungeons and raiding during the day.

As always,   be smart and be prepared to take advantage of not just the regular auction house but also the black market auction house.   Players will be looking for gear that they can raise their gear ilvl to get into dungeons and raiding faster.  So investing in a crafting pattern from the Auction House and being one of the first to have that item on the auction can rack up big profits this weekend.

Just keep your eye on the prize and be ready for the race.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

MOP Prep: Last Minute Items

A very excited Mommar here.

It's just over 48 hours before the gates to Mists of Pandaria open.   Players are getting those last minute chores finished.  Making one final attempt at Deathwing with the guild.  Ready to take on new challenges of classes and races.

In the next 48 hours players are going to be doing both their personal housekeeping and their guild housekeeping.  Even the raiding guild bank that I belong too needs a good cleaning out.   This means that on many servers there will be lots of items for sale at good healthy discounts.   Discounted items always bring a tear to a gold goblin eye.

Your strategy from here on out will become more important for long term sales.  By now you should
you should have the majority of your epic items discounted for a quick sale.   Running your Disenchant
searches in preparation for resale.

This weekend will be one of the last weekends to get your plans organized on leveling.  Who will be first
to hit the lands of Pandaria?   Will your add-ons be prepared to go.   Now is a good time to try your hand
at running without add-ons to make sure you're not waiting for updates.

How is your sales strategy set up?   Who will be the first to list items on the AH?  What items will you
queue first?   Will your Jewelcrafter be the first up to bat,  or your Enchanter?   The fine tuning of your
plans now will pay dividends as the plains of Pandaria get invaded.

Here is what we know.

-   There will be no restart of the servers at midnight Pacific Daylight Time.  Before there has always
a server restart before a server expansion begins.  This will be new technology
     (so bring your stress towel)

-   A new quest will pop up on screen at midnight for everyone that can enter Pandaria lands.  It starts at
the main city leader for whichever faction you are.  (Garrosh for Horde,  Varian for Alliance)

-  Monks will be available at exactly midnight from the selection screen.    No game restart necessary

Now,  the parts that they don't tell you

There will be a large amount of people in the same small area (Stormwind and/or Orgrimmar) so yes
there will be lag for many players.   Waiting five or ten minutes before entering the area might save you
some frustration.

I have always suggested not to be the first one to start listing items for resell on the Auction House.
If you are the first to list then you will be the first underbid.  Other than die hard players,
the majority of players will not get started playing til later in the day. Get your daily chores finished,
work on some leveling and prepared to wait for a bit.  It's new,  it's exciting but unless you're working
on a realm first the game will be there tomorrow.

Many players will have 25 daily quests stocked up in their logs for turn-in at the beginning.  This will
give you a small jump on the competition but it isn't going to be heartbreaking not to have them.
Most of the trainers the main capital cities will allow you to start your Mists of Pandaria professions.
Another option will be to have your characters sitting in Dalaran ready to start training.  The
The majority of players will be in the main cities auction houses and trainers so Dalaran should again be relatively barren.

If you're looking for your fishing realm first.  Have your bags emptied and ready to go.   Since you can
get points for fishing everywhere I'm suggesting to be at the back end of the water in the sewers
of Dalaran.  Many fishers will be at the front end of the waters.   And if need be you have an
easy vendor spot just inside the inn if your bags get full.    With the Giant Sewer Rat being a drop in
the area this gives you added incentive to fish here.

Fishing poles will no longer be required to fish in Mists of Pandaria (are we using our swords to fish?)
but still bring your plus skill fishing poles to give you an added advantage.  If you fished your profession
to maximum before it won't add much,  but you also want to look good when you get your fishing
realm first.

Last but not least.  Have fun.   This is a train ride up and down hills in the next 72 hours.  Be prepared to
enjoy the ride,  curse at the ride,  and cry during the ride.  But it is going to be enjoyable.  If you let the
ride be fun.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

You want to do WHAT????

Mommar has arrived..  With cookies (okay,  I'm really working on a different intro here).

Goals are important in everything you do.   From everyday life to your World of Warcraft playing career.   Setting goals to obtain can be a driving force in your success.

One of the questions I consistently receive is 'how do I make gold'.   My response is always 'How much to you want to make?'.  Without a definitive goal in mind,  you end up floundering in the wind of frustration and failure.

1.  Set daily goals

When I started writing my book,   my attention was just the idea of sitting down and writing.  This worked for a time for me.  But the daily grind of life interfering got to me.  I found one day I would write one page,  and other days I would write 25 pages.   There was no consistency in my writing because there was no rhyme or reason on what production would be done.

In the World of Warcraft gold making,  500,000 is a nice round number.  Most players would be dancing in the streets to make 500,000 gold as they play.   Did you know that 500,000 gold only translates to a little under 1400g a day?    Setting a goal and telling yourself that you want to make 1400g a day becomes a lot more obtainable than just saying I want 500,000g by next summer.

2.  Know your skills

I will fully admit I am not the greatest writer in the world.   I have left some stinkers when it comes to entries here.  But there are items that I am proud of having written.  The one thing I know is that the only person with my viewpoint is myself.  And the only person with the combination of your time and your abilities is yourself.   Players may compete with you in certain professions.  But ultimately they cannot be on at the same time you are,  or have the same skill set of thoughts you bring to the table.  You are a unique gold goblin who chooses your own destiny.  If you're a grinder when it comes to gold, then you can make gold.  If you are a great flipper who can spot deals in a heartbeat,  then you should pursue that.  Perhaps you are the best barker in trade chat with a golden virtual tongue.  Bring that strength to what you do.   Your skills are what makes you successful.

3.  You only fail at your goals if you give up.

You are fully capable of doing anything you set your mind too.  But sometimes your goals aren't always successful.  The beauty of having a goal is that you can continue it on.   A famous wrestler has set himself up to climb to 7 greatest mountains of all time.   He has trained and taken them one step at a time.  Even through injuries he works at his goals,  and knows he will succeed.  Maybe not on the time frame originally planned,  but he will succeed ultimately.

4.  Set your own goals,  don't let others set them for you.

Players both in World of Warcraft and in the real world try to set goals for others.   They say your not successful unless you reach a certain dps.  Your not successful if you don't have a certain amount of gold in your bank.  Your not successful unless you have a porche in your driveway and a redhead on your arm.   The beauty of goals and success is that you set them for yourself.   And that success in your own life is what you build to have stronger and higher goals.   When I started playing warcraft I was excited beyond belief when I made my first 10,000g.  After that I was excited when I hit 50,000g.  I again was excited when I hit 100,000g.   Every goal I set for myself I was excited about.  Not because it made me BGOC (Big Goblin On Campus).  It made me successful to myself.   And ultimately that's who I measured my success on.

Daily goals in World of Warcraft become as important as breathing.   And setting your goals will drive
you to success not just in your Warcraft career,  but in your daily life.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

MOP: Powerleveling Leatherworking in the Vale

Hey Gang,  it's Mommar again (one of these days it might be someone else you know).

Figured I would give you a good heads up.  Kaliope over at Craftertome.com has put her her powerleveling guide for Leatherworking.  I don't believe that just copying and pasting is fair so to make
sure she gets some link love here is the link to her guide Kaliope's Power leveling Zen Leatherworking.

After you've read that,  you will see that it appears and many of the professions are not going to require exotic ingredients as it has in the past.   The only thing that you will need to worry about is obtaining the recipes form the vendors at The Vale of Eternal Blossoms.

If you enjoyed unlocking the vendors at Twilight Highlands,  then you're sure to love going through the opening sequence in Vale of Eternal Blossoms.   It doesn't seem to be open to unlocking to Level 87.  You can go there earlier but there aren't any quests available.

Just as what happened with Cataclysm and Twilight Highlands to unlock The Vale you have an opening quest line.

1.  [Quest] Temple of the White Tiger from Wang Chung outside the Temple Gates in Kun-Lai Summit

Pretty simple.  Go to Kun-Lai Summit and find Sunwalker Dezco at coordinates 68.6 43.0

He then sends to you Xuen for your next part.

Again relatively simple.  Talk to Xuen, (68.8 42.8)  You have to kill three mobs
(must be the first to tag for credit)

1.  Regular Copy of yourself
2.  Black and White Copy of yourself
3.  King Varian for Horde or Garrosh Hellscream for Alliance

(For some reason I'm going to get this idea that in my mind I'll be saying 'stop hitting yourself' during the first two trials.

Going back to Xuen to turn in the quest you get the third quest from Sunwalker Dezco

3.  [Quest]  A Witness to History

Pretty simple again.   Get the quest from Sunwalker Dezco,   enjoy the cinematic (or go and get your favorite adult beverage) and then turn in the quest to Zhi the Harmonious.  (This last turn in NPC has changed two or three times so don't be surprised if it changes once more before the Mists of Pandaria release.)

Then you are now in the Vale of the Eternal Blossoms.  Welcome to your new home of dailies,   vendors and overall just good panda love.  At least it wasn't as complicated as Twilight Highlands go.
Make sure to read more of Kaliope's writings and guides.
