Apparently some nice set bonuses are going to be added to the blue craftable gear, probably to make it atleast comparable to the savage set for pvp. I look forward to this change as it means that new players for season 6 will most likely feel that the craftable gear is worth getting as a starter set.
MMO-Champion released this information recently:
"The following sets have been created to give set bonuses to crafted armor sets:
Eviscerator's Battlegear
Ornate Saronite Battlegear
Overcaster
Battlegear
Savage Saronite Battlegear
Stormhide Battlegear
Swiftarrow Battlefear
Frostsavage Battlegear
All these sets will give you:
4 Pieces - +75 Stamina
6 Pieces - +50 Resilience"

Make a few extra, blizzard is definately looking into improving the quality of these items to make them atleast worthwhile for new level 80 characters.

They are very competitve with the honor set as they are in game now. These changes will make that set a non-issue.
~500g in mats to make a complete starter set of PVP gear or 100+ hours of grinding battlegrounds? You decide.

So when would be the ideal time to sell these? Post-patch?

Yup. You won't make millions but the price should go up 10-30%. Sell now and see how much demand there is for the items now, knowing it should increase after the patch.
