Well the PTR has started and public patch notes are already available! As you may have guessed this means that Just My Two Copper will be bringing you the news on what effect these changing game mechanics will have on the wow economy.
NOTE: Everything is subject to change on the PTR, there is an inherit risk of blizzard changing their minds at any moment if you act on the patch notes!
Here are my highlights of the patch notes released by World of Raids.
- Increased the health granted by the Flask of Stoneblood.
- Most of the recipes in the 1-300 skill range of blacksmithing have had their stats updated to be more useful.
- Added a new recipe for the Titansteel Spellblade.
- Titanium Plating now reduces the duration of disarm effects by 50% as well as increasing your block value.
- Added a recipe for enchanting staves with spell power.
- Several recipes in the 250-300 skill range have been rebalanced.
- Added a new recipe to cut black diamonds.
- Shadowskin Gloves and Dusky Boots no longer require Shadowcat Hide to create, but instead require an equal quantity of Shadow Silk. Shadowcat Hides can no longer be obtained from skinning.
- There are TONS of new glyphs, I'm assuming that all will require northrend inscription which means that you will most likely get a unique glyph on patch day to sell for maximum price.
Analysis: Blizzard is trying to 'balance' old world items/enhancements and this could do wonders for these markets. The fact that they are improving the stats on craftable lowbie gear could mean best in slot items for pvp twinking (*cross your fingers*). The change to titanium plating means that pvp melee are going to start getting other weapon enchants to replace their titanium weapon chains... expect the value of titanium weapon chains to drop slighty and for titanium plating to rise greatly.
Oh, in other news: GET RID OF YOUR SHADOWCAT HIDES NOW.
I also predict that dragon's eyes are going to be used for epic gems in patch 3.1 (Part of the Black Diamond Recipe?). This is entirely speculation but if you have the gold and want to risk Blizzard NOT implementing some new uncut gem for epics then you will want to start stockpiling dragon's eyes now before they become worth literally a thousand+ gold cut.

i must be psychic or something, because i just maxxed out my bs on my alt and picked up jc on my main >:D money from both ends hopefully
and for the glyphs, i'll just buy them and sell the for greater value. im slowly taking over the glyph business on skullcrusher and im not even a scribe!

Black diamonds wont have anything to do with epic gems, the new design will only convert a non vendorable almost worthless item into a (outland red, yellow or blue uncommon gem)still wothless, but vendorable item.
At the moment I would be careful with Dragons eye too, so i do my dailies, hang on to the token and when we get more info. make my descision.

Ok, does it make sense to stockpile pristine black diamonds (they cost between 2-7g on my server)?

At the moment, the professions are more or less balanced against each other.
This balance will be destroyed if they introduce epic gems. Blacksmithin will be the best profession available because the two additional sockets will produce a bigger benefit.
JC will be worthless (from the self bonus viewpoint) because the epic gems will probably have better stats than the dragon's eye ones.
I don't think we will see epic gems for Ulduar. They have enough other stuff to fix first.

Speeder
I could be wrong, but the way I read the patch notes they are making a recipe for Black Diamonds, the BRD trash drop, not Pristine Black Diamonds.
Where Pristine black diamonds sell for several gold, at least on my server, Black diamonds sell for a handful of silver at best.

I guess its time to make Horde Expedition rep a priority for my BS. You need exalted for Titanium Plating.

JC epics will be far from useless. The JC epic for a single normal stat item is +27. The blue equivalent is +16. I doubt the new epic gems will be greater than +27. Maybe +18 or +20 at most. That gives BS a leg up over JC slightly, but doesn't make JC worthless. Right now, JC has a tiny boost over BS.
Also, don't forget, you can use the JC gems in blue slots, still get the slot bonus, and use any meta gem you want.
So to min/max you'd probably want BS/JC or maybe BS/enchanting.

They are already in the game.

It's +20.

Check this out fellows:
Now i knew why i wanted top stockpile pristine black diamonds
"In 3.1 there will be a new FOF :
Insane in the Membrane Raise your reputation with the areas listed below (Title Reward: The Insane)
Honored with Bloodsail Buccaneers
Exalted with Booty Bay
Exalted with Everlook
Exalted with Gadgetzan
Exalted with Ratchet
Exalted with Darkmoon Faire
Exalted with Ravenholdt
Exalted with Shen'dralar
Which means that the price of Pristine Black Diamond for the Shen'dralar libram will skyrocket (since they aren't really farmable, only saw one drop during my 90 libram farming in Diremaul...). I used to buy them for around 50g a few month ago but I was the only buyer. I would advice to stockpile those (as well as libram Focus/Protection/Rapidity) which are unique but can be placed in a guild bank"

[caveat time: it seems i'm always anti-Kring! but i'm really not]
JC will not be useless as a self buff.
[1] you can wear three dragon's eye cuts on you at any time.
[2] these cuts are WAY BETTER than the best cut in game, including the upcoming epic gems.
[3] to use the example already in the thread: normal cut, +16 int, epic cut, +20 int, dragon's eye cut, +27 int.
[4] combining the information in #1 and #3 above, that's an additional +21 int available to you. 27-20=7 int per * 3 = 21 int
[5] +21 int [or insert other stat here] as the self buff. seems nice to me.
[6] also, as it's stated previously by another poster, the dragon's eye cuts can go in any socket and they count towards socket bonuses as well as meta gem requirements. so casters who need 2 blue gems for their meta can just slap two runed dragon's eyes in [+32 sp pwr each] and they get credit for the blue socket bonus(es) and the meta gem requirement.

@Markos
"The change to titanium plating means that pvp melee are going to start getting other weapon enchants to replace their titanium weapon chains... expect the value of titanium weapon chains to drop slighty and for titanium plating to rise greatly"
What classes use shields in PvP that get disarmed? Protection warriors are the only ones that come to mind. I think Arms Warriors, Ret Paladins, Death Knights and Rogues seem much more likely to be disarmed, and none of them use a shield.
I think Titanium Plating is more of a PvE item that allows the tank to put a better main hand enchant for tanking. Am I missing something?
Markco said... February 25, 2009 at 3:16 PM
@Bill - Pvp warriors will most likely grab this on their shields and put a different enchant on their one handed weapons for when they are focused in arenas.
Being a pvp prot warrior (Hey atleast I'm past 1900 rating lol) I am overjoyed but I do realize I'm a rare breed.

So basically the prices for Pristine Black Diamond and Dragon's Eye should be shooting up after the patch provided Blizzard doesn't change anything since the latest patchnotes?
HokieJayBee said... February 25, 2009 at 4:52 PM
bitwise, i haven't logged into WoW yet today, i will when i get home from work in a few.....
but, just like the RL stock market, the pristine black diamonds and dragon's eyes are probably already through the roof. the prices go up on the news of impending news, not on the actual event of news itself.
"directv will be buying dishnetwork and announcing an annual increase in earnings of 300% on next Friday"....stock shoots up the day of the announcement [patch notes released], not the day of the stock occurence [patch hits].
i hope tonight isn't too late. i'll but all the diamonds on my server and this'll give me the kick in the axe i need to level my shaman's JC so i can have two toons doing the JC daily.

Markco, similar to what you mentioned prior to patch 3.08 about the probable increase in frozen orb and dream shard prices, i'm going to venture a "wild" guess and say the price of icy dragonscales is about to shoot up.
Currently, they sell for near vendor prices, but post patch 3.1, they will be required in all 8 of the new epic LW patterns (40 scales apiece!). Considering they are used in about 8 recipes currently (none of which have much use), the demand will skyrocket post-patch...i foresee some serious profit potential here...
