MOP Prep: Whose up first?

Mommar Here.

So the past few days I've been steadily thinking about who to level first.  The new XP numbers seem to push the idea that it will take about 30 hrs give or take to level.

For the last two Expansion packs I looked to level one of my raiding characters first.  I started off with my Warrior (aptly named Mommar) who leveled in about 6 days.  I didn't spend 100% of the time I could to level due to extra things in my life.   Once I had him leveled and exploring the new world,  I turned towards my second character to level.   This was my hunter gathering toon (my Hunter Move).

She leveled through quests but spent a lot of time killing mobs for skins and getting ore to feed into Mommar (he is my Leatherworking/Blacksmithing specialist).  Slowly but surely I finished leveling everyone who I was going to level during the cataclysm expansion pack.  The last one leveled to 85 was my Paladin.  By this time I was slightly burnt out of questing in the New Azeroth (Doing the same 7 quests will destroy your will to visit any place.)

Spending countless hours with Auction House chores (by this time I was no longer raiding with my guild) I continued to work on gaining gold,  spending gold and overall just enjoying another aspect
of the game.  If I had to do things differently I would have probably concentrated more on obtaining
my professions maximized first and then worked on gearing.

There are three different types of reasons someone chooses to level a character.

1.   New Class/New abilities to try out
2.   Play Style/Enjoyment
3.   Gold Making possibility.

The first two are self explanatory.  They are choices that a player has to make on their own.  Do you
want to play a Panda or a monk?  Did you not roll a goblin with the last expansion?   These are going to
drive a majority of the players on the choices they make.

For me,  I'm looking at strictly on a gold making level.   We know from the Betas that professions are
going to have to level to at least 87 to be able to maximize out their abilities. Vale of Eternal Blossoms
is where the patterns are sold.   But the question is going to be what is the most profitable to get there.

A farming toon has a strong catalyst when it comes to leveling at the start of an expansion.   The playing
field is even because there are no real stockpiles of the new materials.   The farming toon has the ability
to command their own prices for what they collect while finishing up quests and exploring new territory.
Other professions are dependent on the stock of others,  whether gathered by their farming toons or
purchased from outside sources.

But one Profession can make and use their own materials.   The Enchanter has a distinct advantage over
the rest of the professions.   They can recycle their items that are no longer useful into materials that can
be crafted into something else.  Or sold on the open market.   Putting together both a crafter and tailor
(which is my toon Mosiac) becomes a very powerful combination from the start.  Nothing ends up going
waste or is vendored just for gold.

So I decided that when MOP starts I'll be pushing heavy to level my Enchanting/Tailor combination first.
At least to 87 to open up the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.  Most of my other characters will follow in suit
with my two raiding characters as well as my backup band.

What reasons are you looking to level specific toons?  Who's on first when the gates of Pandaria open?

MOP: Powerleveling Leatherworking in the Vale

Hey Gang,  it's Mommar again (one of these days it might be someone else you know).

Figured I would give you a good heads up.  Kaliope over at Craftertome.com has put her her powerleveling guide for Leatherworking.  I don't believe that just copying and pasting is fair so to make
sure she gets some link love here is the link to her guide Kaliope's Power leveling Zen Leatherworking.

After you've read that,  you will see that it appears and many of the professions are not going to require exotic ingredients as it has in the past.   The only thing that you will need to worry about is obtaining the recipes form the vendors at The Vale of Eternal Blossoms.

If you enjoyed unlocking the vendors at Twilight Highlands,  then you're sure to love going through the opening sequence in Vale of Eternal Blossoms.   It doesn't seem to be open to unlocking to Level 87.  You can go there earlier but there aren't any quests available.

Just as what happened with Cataclysm and Twilight Highlands to unlock The Vale you have an opening quest line.

1.  [Quest] Temple of the White Tiger from Wang Chung outside the Temple Gates in Kun-Lai Summit

Pretty simple.  Go to Kun-Lai Summit and find Sunwalker Dezco at coordinates 68.6 43.0

He then sends to you Xuen for your next part.

Again relatively simple.  Talk to Xuen, (68.8 42.8)  You have to kill three mobs
(must be the first to tag for credit)

1.  Regular Copy of yourself
2.  Black and White Copy of yourself
3.  King Varian for Horde or Garrosh Hellscream for Alliance

(For some reason I'm going to get this idea that in my mind I'll be saying 'stop hitting yourself' during the first two trials.

Going back to Xuen to turn in the quest you get the third quest from Sunwalker Dezco

3.  [Quest]  A Witness to History

Pretty simple again.   Get the quest from Sunwalker Dezco,   enjoy the cinematic (or go and get your favorite adult beverage) and then turn in the quest to Zhi the Harmonious.  (This last turn in NPC has changed two or three times so don't be surprised if it changes once more before the Mists of Pandaria release.)

Then you are now in the Vale of the Eternal Blossoms.  Welcome to your new home of dailies,   vendors and overall just good panda love.  At least it wasn't as complicated as Twilight Highlands go.
Make sure to read more of Kaliope's writings and guides.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Got Phone? Get Free Warcraft App

If you are like me,  you drag your smart phone anywhere you go too.   Personally I bring a large selection of books along with my texting app,  my twitter app and a portable browser.  It's a mild addiction that I put up with.

But Blizzard just uncorked something that should get a lot of Warcraft players with Smartphones excited.   Originally World of Warcraft official phone app cost 3 dollars a month to use.   It gave basic access to guild chat,  auction house and the armory.  Where some players decided to buy it for the novelty I have my doubts it was as popular as Blizzard expected to be.  Where I enjoyed the free version,  when it added 3 bucks to my bill I didn't feel it was worth the usage fee.

Low and behold the heavens have opened up and everyone gets to be saved 3 dollars.   Blizzard has made their mobile armory app for the iphone and android operating systems free to use.    This can be a very useful tool to look up items quickly.   Combined with the website auction house access you no longer have to start up warcraft to be able to buy a quick item that's on sale.

Accessing the web client auction house is relatively simple.

1.  Log into your World of Warcraft account here
2.  Look halfway down the screen on the right hand side and find 'Auction House'

3.  Click on the word Auction House and it will take you to the web functions available.

Basic sorting is available as well as looking up specific items.   You can also use basic searches for 'ore' or 'ink' if you want to see where those stand at.   The auction house you see is linked to your character so Horde will see the Horde AH and the Alliance will see the Alliance AH.  You can also view
your auctions on the Neutral AH if you click the tab just under the Horde/Alliance Battle Flag.

I like this app being free.  There is a huge advantage when you just want to put up a few auctions without having to log into the game.  Or check on a raid availability with your guild without having to log on.  Hopefully it being a "free" app won't prevent Blizzard from letting the app get upgraded.  Add-ons would be an excellent thing for players to be able to use.  But that would require them to allow more access to the Auction House API which they aren't all that open to.

This definitely gets the ball rolling on having more access to deals away from the keyboard.   Now I need to go and check to see what my guildmates are up too.   SHHHH they won't see it coming

Long Term vs Short Term Profits

Your Friendly Neighborhood Mommar here.

We're all looking forward to the Panda Invasion with Mists of Pandaria opening its gates.   Every expansion brings new opportunities and new ways of making gold.  Along with the classics that bring in the gold into the coffers.

Players are centering in on areas of market exploitation with new players leveling toons,  as well as experienced players who want to try something new.  All of them need items,  items that the gold goblins on each server want to sell.

But with every investment you must look at when will it truly sell to make a profit?   Certain items will be a no brainer when it comes to sales.   Cloth,  Ore,  Bars,  Dust and products that are in high demand  will sell quickly and often.  But some items it will be different,  because they are dependant on how quickly new players will have the excess gold to spend.

Many players are chugging along in the Cataclysm expansion,  picking up items such as pets,  and vanity items.  The adage of  'if they really want it,  they already own it' is the bane of any gold goblin. The truth is that many investment items we are looking to sell,  will be dependant on how much gold new players have.   The expansion of markets of the old world will need this influx of players and their demand for products.

Players are becoming more and more intelligent when it comes to making gold in Warcraft.  There is an influx of quality guides and forums that can give you step by step on how to make gold.   The Trade Skill Master add-on even creates the opportunity to Semi-Automate gold making with professions.   Gold will become more and more prevalent

The twist is that many investments,  especially Vanity items such as pets will end up being a longer term investment.  There will be sales of course to established players who on flights of fancy buy an item they want.  But the new sales will take a longer time to become available.

When looking at your investments,  categorize them into who your target sales will.  Planning based on time and gold availability  will set you up for more sales over a longer period of time

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Two accounts... Twice the Profit???

Mommar Here.

When I started playing World of Warcraft I was in awe of everything I saw.   Players that could get high damage in raids.   Players who could be on the top of the charts with PVP.   Gladiator titles and epic weapons.

But what put me in awe the most were the legends of players having multiple accounts.  2, 3 even the dreaded 5 box dancing Moonkin (epic funny).   But I never saw that I would need that many accounts. As I progressed in making characters,  and maxxing out their professions.  Discovering new ways of adding to my goblin fortune.  I started filling the 10 slots I had per server rather quickly.  8 leveling toons and 2 banking toons parked in different areas had me wondering whether it was time to take the plunge and pay for a second account.

There are many benefits to having two accounts.  Besides allowing you to have multiple characters from both Horde and Alliance,  it makes sending items across the joint auction house less of a hassle.  If you have a quick enough computer you can just have two versions of Warcraft open and flip between the two.   On busy servers this can become very lucrative.

Then I looked at the downside.  It was an extra 15 dollars from my account.  And if I needed another slot for characters I could open up on another server.  The challenge of making another fortune on another server was very tempting.    Now some gold goblins will swear that to be in the big leagues you must have multiple accounts.   That the markets become wide open if you are able to swap materials across the great divide of factions.

But in the end i wasn't willing to sacrifice more time to build,  level,  craft just for a few more handfuls of gold (yes,  I know very ungoblin like).   So what was I to do to get items across the auction house?

This is where I made a deal with a friend.  They wanted gold and I wanted materials to sell to the bad guys (yes,  I'm horde all the way).   So working out a deal for 10% of my profits,  we worked out a system to get items to the Alliance.   It's been lucrative all the way.  Items that were available only for the Horde were sold on the alliance AH in a heartbeat.   All in demand and all being sold at a very large markup.  Nothing like relieving the Alliance of some of their gold.

Spending some time on Theunderminejournal.com  I could get a quick idea of what would sell quickly for a large profit.   Later when Blizzard introduced Free to play accounts I grabbed a quick account,  ran a toon to org as my AH spy.   Where I couldn't sell anything with that toon,  I could get a good idea of what to transfer later on in the day.

Does this mean that I think having multiple accounts is a bad thing?  Not at all.  Everyone has the choice on their playstyle.   It can be lucrative to have multiple playing accounts on multiple toons.   It gives a different flavor to the game,  and allows you more flexibility.   But I do not think that it's something that you have to have to be top in the Gold Game.

10 slots full of production can make a lot of gold.   Try it,  you might like it.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Mommar Here.

Seems that our Uncles at Blizzard are not big on the stockpiling of Valor or Justice Points.  With the new announcement on how they are converting both sets of points,  players that were banking on free gold were highly disappointed.

The basic time frame now is

The next patch is released on August 28th. (5.0.4)

Valor Points would be converted to Justice points with the intro patch to Mists of Pandara,  Justice Points would stay the same.  Justice Points have no cap on them.  Justice points will be the only points able to be earned.  Valor Points no longer will be available til the opening of Mists of Pandaria. Items purchased by Valor Points will be available via Justice points.

Conquest points get converted to Honor Points.
Arenas are closed
All items available for purchase via Conquest points will be purchased by Honor Points.

Mists of Pandaria opens on September 25th

Valor points earned via quests,  daily random dungeons and Raids.  1000 max per week, 3000 cap
Conquest points earned through daily PVP random and Arenas  4000 cap on conquest points

---------------------------------------------

So what does that mean to the gold goblins?   Well life is going to be interesting for a bit.  With no cash conversion of points this time,  stockpiling points really give no added benefit.   The gear that will be purchasable with Justice points will be of lower level gear than obtained via Heroic Dungeons.   Valor points are used to upgrade gear or to purchase high level gear.  Both types of gear will require reputation with one of the factions in Mists.  Opportunities to resell JP gear (like the boots or wrists bracers from cataclysm) will be few at the start.

All of this news does not mean that JP will be worthless.   The lower level gear purchased from Justice points will be useful to get players ready for Heroic Dungeons that much quicker.   The required gear level for Heroics could be tricky to meet if you didn't throw in the occasional PVP gear pieces or crafted gear.   Extra Justice Points could easily add one or two pieces to your collection to put you over the top.

At any point Blizzard might change their mind and just reset everything.  Or go back to the Gold conversion method they have done in previous expansions.   Just keep this in mind before you spend hours focusing on having 20,000 Justice Points just to get them turned into 100g.   Moderation is a good thing.

Goblins, Pandas and Blood Elfs for all.. O My

Brilliant,  Brilliant and Brilliant.   When Blizzard developers announced that starting with MOP all races could be played independent on what expansion you owned,  my gold goblin mind went a flying.

Why you might ask?    Because i looked specifically at the Goblin and his racial ability Best Deals Anywhere.   Now separate the idea that you can play a Panda without having to fork over another 39.95.   That one ability can become very useful as time goes.

Best Deals Anywhere was heavily nerfed at patch 4.1 (goodbye ultra cheap Mechano-Hog parts) you will be missed.  But Reputation rewards based vendors still gave a good discount on items.   This might not seem a lot when your dealing with some investments.  But that extra 10-20g you can save on older mounts and pets can start to add up.

Not just the gold aspect.  but when Death Knights and Blood Elves were introduced (Draenei as well) there was an outcry because players didn't want to fork over real life cash to just test out a type of player.   Now you can test out your Panda,  see if you like it and then give over your cash.   Or take the dive like many will and purchase your Mists of Pandaria from the start.

I'm looking for more aspects to be introduced in the upcoming month (yes,   it's only a month and change away from coming out) to spice up the excitement in the new expansion.  There has been a definite lull in excitement with the gaming world,  mostly out of the belief that pandas will "ruin the realism" of the game.   Not sure how that will work since it's a completely make belief world of orc and goblins and goat people.

Leave a comment,  will this announcement make you roll a new toon before buying Mists of Pandaria?

MOP Prep: Prepping the Farmer

On the master list of making gold in World of Warcraft,  farming is the second easiest way of making gold right behind questing.   It can become a very simple way of collecting materials to sell either to cartel members or to the open market.   The only cost is your time and the occasional repair bill if you farm at the wrong place or time (PVP servers are especially nasty at this).

Any of the classes can be adequate farmers.   As long as you're able to get to a place that is abundant with materials to sell,  you can become a farmer with just a flick of a mental switch.  Where it isn't required to have a dedicated farmer for your personal cartel,  it gives you a leg up on the competition when materials are not available.   Being able to farm items as you quest in new lands gives a new wrinkle into your collection of profits.

When looking at your farming structure you have normally three different types of farmers.   The Herbalist,  the Miner and the Skinner.   In my structure I've added a 4th one which is my disenchanter/item hunter.   The reason that I believe there should be a distinction in our setup is that farming lower level instances can be very rewarding for both enchanting materials,  as well as vanity items to sell on the Auction House.  My Disenchanter/Hunter is my Blood Elf Warlock.   It's important to have your enchanter be able to AOE mobs in low level instances instead of having to kill one or two at a time.   Druids or Mages are extra strong in these areas.

Currently my setup for my farmers consists of my hunter class having the skinning and mining professions.   My other farmer that handles my disenchantments and herbalist duties is a Druid.    Druids are especially beneficial for Herbalism due to the fact they stay in flight form to pick herbs.   This gives you the ability to be onto the next farming spot while the competition has to wait the 3 seconds to activate their mount (add to this reaction time and you have a good 4-5 seconds head start from the competition).  When areas such as Wintergrasp were heavily farmed for materials,  this gave me almost an unfair advantage over the other farming classes.   Also included was the ability to switch into melee (Cat form and Bear form) as well as having a Boomkin setup (Thunderchicken) for those times I needed to defend my routes.

Your mining and skinning toon selection becomes more of a personal choice of play style than any added advantage.   Hunters,  Druids and Warlocks have continual longer ranges for their attacks,  plus with AOE capabilities they can go through multiple enemies quickly.   Warriors tend to be the weakest in farming due to the need for up close combat.    For personal selection the Death Knight can be one of the strongest farmers,  or the weakest.  Play style becomes a factor with many of the classes.

Dedicated Famers gives you a good boost in your time management and much needed materials for your other crafters.  Whether you have all four farming disciplines covered.  At minimum having a farmer that is linked to what other crafting professions you have with other toons.   Having a Blacksmith becomes stronger with a Miner.   An alchemy business becomes that much more lucrative with an herbalist in tow.

This is where I usually break from the norm.   Profession bags can become expensive.   Each level of bags tends to become more and more exorbitant in costs.    The High slot bags can cost 1000 of gold based on supply and demand.

But if you lower your amount of slots a good amount of savings can be made.   The [Triple Reinforced Bag] (36 slots) costing 1500g.   Looking at one of the lower bags,  the 28 slot Trapper's Traveling Pack can be found at half the cost.   Bag slots were important before Guild Banks became available.  Now the larger amount of slots becomes more of a convenience than a necessity.

Your farmer should be prepared from the start with the magical Gnomish Army Knife.  Besides bags this is going to be your best investment.   Buying enough now while they are inexpensive will benefit you since they will rise in prices with Mist of Pandaria.

The biggest preparation you can do is to have your material farming routes planned out.   Wowhead always has good information on where certain items can be found.  Whether it's a weapon or an herb,  players are your best assets to finding routes to quickly obtain product materials.   A combination of Knowledge and time will put your profits on the upturn.

Farming is going to continue to be strong,  and setting your mind to a specific structure will allow you to pick,  process and obtain gold at your own pace.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Revenge of club DOH!!!

No one is perfect.   It's the nature of the beast to make mistakes.   When I first started playing Warcraft I knew nothing about stats,  about how to play my class.  My first dungeon included tanking with a two handed weapon.   After we finished the dungeon Blackfathom Deeps,  one of the players talked to me and suggested I pick up a shield if I was going to tank.

So was the not so awesome start to my playing career.   Thankfully through the years I have played,  I have had more success than failure.  But every so often when my head gets a little to big,  a reality check of mine bounces.

I was working on leveling another toon to prep for Mists of Pandaria.  Doing Hyjal quests for the 7th time caused my mind to be on autopilot.  This was one of my herbalist so I would drop down from time to time and pick some herbs for long term storage.  Looking at my bar I noticed that I was not rising in skill.   Assuming I had maxxed the profession previously I continued to run around,  finish quests and pick herbs.   Then for some reason I decided to go ahead and look at my profession list to see where I was.   Behold my depths of dumb arrived,  My skill level in Herbalism was still at 425.  I had forgotten to train to the next level.

Feeling sheepish (bahh) I jetted into town,  trained and then decided that I had embarrassed myself for the night enough.  So why am I sharing my tale of Doh today?   Just as it's important for the big strategies,  looking for the big rewards as we continue to Azeroth and beyond.   Do not forget the little things as well.  Training can be just as important as scanning the Auction House for your latest buy.

Small details ignored can cost a Gold Goblin time,  and even gold.   Someone making a trade might slip the wrong amount of gold in a transaction.  Or even the unscrupulous trader might try to sell you an item,  then just as the trade goes through slip a similar item in replacement (the icon being the same but definitely different quality).   You end up losing your money,  and the thief continues on his merry way.

The Devil is in the details.   Now,  I need to go pick some herbs to make up for lost time.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Old Shuffle Same as the New Shuffle

Here at JMTC branch headquarters,  we are always busy looking at strategies.   Okay,  so not really because i do have a personal life.   Exercising,  going out with friends and overall enjoying real life time as well as my Warcraft gaming life.

Some strategies die a horrible death.  With Mists of Pandaria,  Blacksmiths will lose a very lucrative rod creation market.   Leatherworkers and Blacksmiths will see changes in how they craft PVP gear, armor patches and overall money making methods.

But it's not quite time to put the old methods to bed just yet.   Lets take Jewelcrafting for instance.  Every week I get someone who will ask me "I have a Jewelcrafter,  how do I make gold".   Right from the start I ask them "are you still doing your Elementium shuffle".    If they answer yes then we can discuss much more advanced methods including flipping markets,  low level cuts and prospecting.  But if the answer is no,  then they have either abandoned or ignored the base of their Jewelcrafting operations.

Elementium ore is hovering at the 1g per ore.   Remembering that players were making gold at 80g per stack,  this should be encouragement to keep into the market.   Buying Elementium,  prospecting and cutting specific gems can still make a profit.   Now here is the catch to look at.

There will be a large influx of players who want to use Elementium ore to level their Jewelcrafting,  Blacksmithing and even the brave player who levels and Engineer.   Where there seems to be a lot of Ore available now,  this will slowly dwindle as has every ore from previous expansions.   This is where continuing with the Elementium shuffle becomes important.  But we are going to add our own little twist for future investments.

With the normal shuffle you prospect ore,  transmute Carnelians into Inferno Rubies,  craft jewelry from the Hessonite,  Nightstone, Jasper and Alicite.   Once you craft the jewelry you send to your favorite disenchanter and rep the material rewards.   A much more detailed description is found in our archives here.

Zephyrite was always the red headed step child of the shuffle.  Never quite knowing what to do with them,  many players vendored them for whatever they could get.   Some would hold them back to list on days they were the main gem used in the daily Jewelcrafting quests.   We're going to expand the idea of holding these gems back to all of the gems that are used in the dailies.   Yes,  that's the Alicites, Hessonites,  Nightstone and Jaspers.   Now you might ask why would I want to do this?   Simply put,   we are banking on asset reduction as MOP matures.  Players will still look to level both Jewelcrafting and Enchanting.   If Hypnotic dust starts to rise,   take 10 minutes to craft a few rings,  send over to the disenchanter and you have profits. If Hessonites start to raise in demand,  place some on the AH to sell.   Even the dreaded Zephyrite can become an investment.

There is a basis for this technique.   At the end of Wrath of the Lich King expansion, many of the basic gems could be purchased dirt cheap.  25s was the normal price to see for Sun Crystals and Huge Citrine.  Now you can buy them for 7-8g on many servers.  And it will only increase as we get farther and farther away from the Cataclysm expansion.

This also plays into my Zero Balance Investment method I presented to you earlier.   Taking the blue gems,  crafting to sell at a profit will pay for the longer term investment of your other colors.  You can even take some of the basic gems and place them on the AH to sell,  or craft your jewelry for disenchantment.   The object is to work out what will give you the most profit vs your time used.

Adjusting old techniques by just a little bit can place you in a better drivers seat with your investments. And reap large profits at the beginning and during the upcoming panda expansion.
