At one point I wrote and article You will Farm and You Will Like It giving a brief discussion on the trials and tribulations of the warcraft gamer.
Farming in Warcraft at one point was a necessary evil. Auction House Prowess was a very rare commodity during 'Vanilla' wow. Which gold gurus being held in high esteem. As the progression of expansion packs created more and more markets for sales, this esteem lost a little bit of its luster. Knowledge of how to sell, and what to sell was passed on to players, to the point that the raiding community could do the majority of their chores without the need to spend hours farming their own materials. They could spend their time and energies gaining items to increase their power, or in some cases vanity items.
If you look specifically at the materials farming professions (mining, herbing, skinning) there still is a great demand for these items. Blizzard having tightened up the screws on 'Chinese Gold Farmers' has evened out the market giving the casual farmer just as much ability to gain gold with this method.
There is always a cost to making gold in Warcraft. In farming, the cost is time and effort. The cost of the items that are needed for basic and even advanced farming is minimal. Even if you go and purchase the best farming items (Gnomish Army Knife, Enchants for gloves), the investment still ends up being minimal.
The one thing to look at is that a little bit of information will get you a log way when it comes to farming. Information will be quickly found on the best farming spots with the MOP release. Having these little pieces of information will end up putting you above the other farmers running to sell their collected materials on the market.
Farming is one of many tools that you should be prepared to use in your arsenal of gold making toolbox. Without it, you are at the mercy of others for your gold making needs.
