Post Patch Weekend Arrives

It's Mommar fellow goblins and goblinettes:

The first weekend of a new patch is always the stress test on markets.   This is many times when the casual players start to return with gold and items on their mind.   The next three days will tell the story
on just how successful that the patches were as far as the gold economy.

It's been up and down for many players on servers.  Some have been reporting excellent sells in the glyph markets and other items,  while others are struggling,  mostly do to players not returning back
as expected.  Commodities such as ore and cloth are still depressed (good investment potential for when
the main event opens on September 28th.

Just keep in mind to look for new opportunities to take advantage of.   Don't get into a mental rut and just
assume that if you don't have the item to craft that you can't make gold.  Flipping items on the AH such
as Ink and even basic dust from vendors can rake in profits just as easily as manufacturing the item
itself.

Also keep an eye on the players that are still dumping their extra products on the AH.  Multiple guild
banks and in special need of spring cleaning.  What might seem like junk now could be valuable to
levelers.  Keep an eye on items that are faction turn ins for reputation.

Firewing Signets and Arcane Tomes are inexpensive right now.  As new players progress through the old player areas,  these turn in items could sell for good profits.

Make sure to keep an eye out for your expenses as well.   Demand always picks up on the weekends
and holidays.  So items will sell well,  but crafters might see an increase in raw mineral cost.  Look
before you leap on what you buy and what you craft.

Paying attention on the weekends and knowing what to buy puts you above the game and ahead of the
other goblins in the race.

Good luck and Good Hunting
(and stay safe this weekend).

An Open Letter To Inscriptionists

Dear Fellow Inscriptionists.

I come to you with a few statements and even more questions.   In the past few days there have been great opportunities in the buying and selling of glyphs and other items.   Many of you have developed new fortunes.  Many of you have beefed up your coffers selling to new players as well as players coming back.   I offer you my congratulations and wish you continued enjoyment.

To those that are finding it frustrating in having to your more expensive glyphs undercut continually,  I offer you my condolences.  You are not the only one that has run into competition in this and other markets.  Keep a stiff upper lip as the British saying goes,  and enjoy the ride.  Your time will come.

My letter is mostly directed to those that have decided to tilt the market for many glyphs to the bare minimum.   The ones that take items and will list them for a small profit if any at all.   Hopefully this will bring you some insight on these choices.

There are four reasons why a player would undercut an item on the Warcraft auction house at an extreme percentage.

1.   Your posting add-on is not working properly.   It's understandable that add-ons such as Trade Skill
Manager may not be set up appropriately.   My suggestion would be to look to reset your listings
and verify that everything is set up properly.  You will not be disappointed with your profits raise
      up quickly.

2.   Fingers that are used on the keyboard have gained a life of their own.   I fully understand the
mentally automated posting of items.  Jewelcrafters and Inscriptionist have the repetitive job of
pressing the same buttons multiple time to post items.   Perhaps using an alternate finger would
help prevent future mistakes.  A little training of the fingers again will bring you large amounts
of profit.  And less ridicule from the masses of players that your fingers have upset.

3.   Your generous nature has driven you to the idea that you must keep glyphs inexpensive for others.
There is a certain false logic to this.   Yes many times glyphs can be expensive for new players.
But along with this many Inscriptionists are willing to perform basic glyph services for little or
no cost.   They only ask that the materials be provided and a small gratuity be included.   The only
true reason why a player would want to buy a glyph from the AH is out of convenience.   Looking
for an online Inscriptionist can be time consuming.   But the market can be seen to demand a cost
      for said convenience.

All three of these reasons are legitimate if not misguided.  Easily corrected and the future of inscription
ends up being a speed bump and not a complete roadblock.

Unfortunately, my friend the fourth reason is simply misguided.  It is living on the idea that everything should have a monkey wrench thrown into it.   Including a market such as inscription.   We can refer to it in the same vain as an anarchist looks at what he must bring down.   This method of 'enjoyment' where is fun for yourself and other players that have agreed to this.  But the truth is that your main target,  the 'rich and wealthy' of warcraft move on to other pastures.  And the only ones that suffer are the players trying to break into inscription.   They are unable to gain revenue to generate more glyphs.  And players searching for new glyphs find them more and more difficult.  A market economy will settle down depending on supply and demand.  Ultimately an imbalance in an open monetary system will repair itself.  Either by circumventing the imbalance,  or a combined effort to return the system to its balanced state.  Generally the second ends up identifying the problem with the system and eradicating
the cause.

This occurs when a group get together,  call it a cartel, develop a strategy to return a monetary system to its natural state.  At first a lot of money is spent to right the system,  but ultimately the cartel receives their money back and more.   Seeing that many servers have seen this anarchic behavior before,  they are well prepared to combat it,  for the good of themselves and their server economy.

So this is a very polite suggestion.   Look at a balance point for your services and your items on the auction house.   And refrain from tilting the server economies just for personal enjoyment.  In the End you will be out of money,  and warcraft life will continue without you.

Signed

Mommar

Good Luck and Good Hunting.

That Thing You Do

Mommar here

When I started playing Warcraft,  I was a lost little puppy.   The game was awesome whenever I cranked up my computer.   I watched as players would run around,  kill mobs.  Being completely lost in all that is warcraft,  I set some personal rules for how I would continue.  One of those rules was that I would share if I had extra of something.

As I later progressed with joining a guild,  being taught how to tank (through research and trial and error) I adjusted the thinking that I had to I would not sell my profession items to guildees.   Hearing that some guilds choose to charge for everything surprised me.   It boggled my mind the idea that you would expect someone to cooperate with you,  and yet charge them for the smallest of items (mage food,  health food etc).   Trying to be the best guild member I could be,  I proceeded to pick up different professions on my toons (I choose my warrior to be both my Leatherworker and Blacksmith because it would give me access to the best pattern drops).

As I've continued on in my Warcraft career,  and started becoming a gold goblin I saw my rules stretched to their end.   Guildees would ask for something, and just automatically pay for crafted items.  I had already accrued a large amount of gold in my coffers so 100g here or 100g there really wasn't going to break my bank.  Being a packrat as well I had toon banks (and later guild banks) full of the
strangest of things.  Turn in items for rep,  grey hats that looked cool.  Items that I never knew if someone would end up asking for.  A big shout out always goes to ArkInventory in help keeping track of it.

So why am I sharing this little glimpse into the world of Mommar?   I was reminded last night about why I made that decision a long time ago to not sell to Guildees.   As the Consortium website had reported earlier in the week,  the toy seller in Dalaran Jepetto Joybuzz and a few other vendors in different cities are selling the Warbot Ignition Key.  This is the pet you could obtain in 2008 from turning in Mountain Dew Game Fuel codes (the drink was nasty,  but the pet was pretty cool).

The Warbot Ignition Key is unique only,  so you can only have one in your bag (you can have multiple ones on the AH,  just have to run back each time to add another one).  There have been some reported bugs that leaving this in your bag and logging out make it disappear.   But back to our story.

As I was playing in my guild I told another one of my cartel about the Ignition Key.   I figured he would pick up one and sell it like I had on the AH.   He later told me that he had bought the one I had placed on the Auction House.   This openly violated my don't sell to guildees rule.   So I jumped over to the mailbox to refund the gold to him.  Undoubtedly there will be an argument about me keeping the gold etc.   So I will just send it to his girlfriend who is also in my guild.  That will take care of the issue.

Making gold is relatively easy in warcraft.  Just the basic grinding out of gems will make you gold ultimately.   Making items and DE'ing them will make you gold.   Flipping items from the Auction House will make you gold.   The important thing to look at is why are you making gold,  and what do you do with it?   There is no condemnation for players who want to make the most gold they can no matter what.   Others choose to be overly generous with their gold.   There is no right or wrong thing to do with gold.   It's a fallacy to believe that it's 'wrong' in charging an exorbitant amount of gold for an item.  In the long run,  players will determine their own pricing and what they're willing to buy something for.   Any type of rules or self regulation is determined by the sellers.

So that's my story,  and I'm sticking to it.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

5.04 first impressions. Fair or Foul

5.04 came out.   There was good,  there was definitely bad and updating addons are always ugly.   But the first day of a patch is always about survival.   Part of that survival is just seeing all the shiny new toys that each class receives.

The New talent system is interesting.   It will take a few days before the "optimum" specs are sent out from the big kids table (Elitistjerks.com).    Figuring that it will cost me a couple of 100g for respects til I get one that I enjoy to play.

Inscription once again got a spark,  though on many servers the undercutting/destruction of the trade came into full effect.  Glyphs were once again getting cut to just above profit level.   It frustrated many inscriptions who had returned into the market for the new Monk glyphs and some of the other new
class glyphs.

The 11th character slot did appear (though you couldn't roll a panda until the release of Mists of Pandaria).   The adjustment to the markets such as bags and enchants weren't as obvious on the first day,  but this weekend will tell the tale with casual players returning from their wowcations to give
the new toys a try.

It did break my heart to see some of the achievements I had earned appear on other players' characters as they logged in (the spam in General was tremendous when I first logged on).   Where I'm for evening out most of the achievements to keep an elitist attitude away from the game.  It did break my heart a little bit to see the achievement 'It's a Long Strange Trip' pop up multiple times.  Having finished that particular achievement on three toons it was a little kick to see others get it on all of their characters.

The markets should become more volatile and exciting as the patch continues.   Look for the inscription
burst to continue as glyph conglomerates come together to try to keep the inscription market from tanking
again.

Also look for a burst in PVP upgrades.   With Honor/Conquest points having now combined,  there should
a burst in patches and enchants that are PVP related.  Where players may return to testing out new combos
and toys in raids,  PVP bg's will become more dominant.

Now to see where my sales came in last night.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

The 5.04 Roundup

I wonder if I couldn't get away with starting to refer to myself in third person.   Probably not,  the Mommar just doesn't have the same ring to it as 'The Situation',  and I don't like spray tans.

As we're all waiting patiently for the servers to be up and running,  there has been a lot of activity on
the blogosphere (c'mon dictionaries,  you gave F-bomb a definition?).   Many updates about play styles
and guides on quick setups.

A couple of them are not as well known.  But they have done a really good job of getting the basics out there without a lot of clutter.

http://www.mmomeltingpot.com/ has an awesome write up on quick starting your characters for glyphs and spell rotations.   Give them some link love as you're waiting for the magic time frame.

Wowinsider.com has a nice write-up on add-on survival (here's a hint,  update them all) here

The consortium websites are furiously busy with updates on information and bugs found here.

There were a couple of last minute additions to the patches that were very interesting.  If you like to
be on the cutting edge of a storyline.  The battle for Theramore will open up for level 85 characters
for exactly 1 week starting September 18th.   No real information on any special achievements or bonus
items if you participate.   But why not give it a try.

Inscriptionist should keep an eye on their Minor research and Northrend research timers.   There is a lot
of questions on what will be available when the patch goes live.    Glyphs might easily be available for
training.  If they are,  grab them quickly in case you get players stacking up for their special panda
monks.

Also with the achievements,  mounts and pets combining be prepared for a lot of wonkiness if you're
using a custom user interface.  Now is a great time to look to start with a clean interface
(curse.com have some excellent ones).   Starting from scratch might be the key to keeping
things up to date.

Loooking forward to seeing you on the servers soon

Good Luck and Good Hunting

I said 11th Slot... not that other word

Mommar checking in.

So I did some late night purchases.  Picked up some Netherweave,  Embersilk and Frostweave cloth
from last minute sellers.   A lot of things are going to depend on tomorrow and whether they roll
out a 11th character slot.

You would think that a 11th slot wouldn't be that important.  But many players grow attached to their creations,  and have a difficult time of deleting toons.  So 10 toons slots on a server gets filled pretty quickly.   By allowing players to roll an race (panda lovers have to wait til the gates of Pandaria open)
there will many new classes and races explored in the next 30 days.   That 11th slot will be filled
quickly by players wanting to try something new.  Goblins,  Worgen,  new races and new classes.

So just that fact should get your gold goblin radar going off.   More players and classes mean more
opportunities to sell bags,  and potions and enchants.   Jewelcrafting,  which had took a major hit as
of late production of profit will get a boost to recover.  And Inscription will get it's Glyphmas part 2
early.

So between when the servers go down for maintenance and the opening of 5.04 there are still chores to
finish.

1.  Update those add-ons.   Personally I use Curse.com for most of my updates but a few have to be
manually updated.   Having the most up to date add-ons will help with any bugs (don't forget to
check  the box that says "load out of date add-ons" when you first get started tomorrow afternoon).

2.  Do some research on your best spec.   Everything changes with the talent trees and abilities.  So be
prepared to have to learn some new rotations.  And enjoy getting to play with some new toys.
Wowinsider.com will have a good listing on the different changes in classes.  So spend a little time
to see what playstyle and talent tree works best for you.

3.  Be ready for delays.   This is one of those major patches that is pretty well guaranteed to have delays.
So logging in at 3 ET exactly to try to log on will only bring you frustration.   There is a small chance
it will go off without a hitch.  If it does then it will be a first.  Being patient will get you past the
     process with less gray hair.

4.  Don't forget it's a game.  Unless you're getting paid to play,  then get some air,  go and take a walk
beacause in the next week there will be lots to digest.   Losing your cool and ranting in trade chat
only makes kittens cry,  and some players laugh.

I'm looking forward to 5.04.   More money, more fun and ooo,  shiny charges with my Warrior.

1500 Conquest Points and nothing to put on

Mommar here.

Less than 24 hours before the 5.04 patch changes come into effect.  Nothing to really worry about other than having to reset all your bars,  relearn new abilities.  New Talent Trees,  go ooo and ahh a lot about all the new animation.  And grouse for the next 28+ days about why you can't roll a Panda just yet.

But there is something you should definitely pay attention too.  That's the conversion of Conquest points to honor.   Originally it was announced that there would be no cap on the Honor Points due to the conversion.  Woohoo,  saints be praised.   But unfortunately the powers that be at Blizzard changed their mind.  There will be a hard cap of 4000 on both Honor and Conquest points.

If the conversion from Conquest (and from Valor) points don't put you over the 4000 cap line.  Well read another one of my articles from the previous section below.  But if you are going over the 4000
cap,  then you need to make some quick adjustments.

For every point over the 4000 cap you get gold.   35s for each honor point and 47s for each Justice Point.  But we are gold goblins,  we can do better than this.

If you want to continue to PVP during the next 40 days or so,  then gear your toon to it's best ability with your conquest points.   All of the PVP armor will be available after 5.04 to buy with Honor points.   Now if you have all the equipment available,  figure out how many honor points you will end up being over after the conversion, and convert those honor points into Justice points.  Even just the purchase and sale of one of the BOE boots or BOE bracers will net you more gold than the conversion of conquest points.

Enchanters have an extra bonus for their extra points.   Large Brilliant Shards are going to be a hot commodity in the next few weeks.  They are used for excellent leveling weapon enchants such as Enchant Weapon - Agility and Enchant Weapon - Crusader.   For 35g on many servers,  and expected to go higher,  this can be a nice money making source.

Do you remember a little battleground called Alterac Valley?   Most players only remember that they can port in for anywhere.  But there is an actual entrance in the Alterac Valley for players.

(Horde Camp)

Alliance Entrance

At the entrance there is an AV quartermaster.  They sell low level PVP items.  But all of these Blue items Disenchant into Large Brilliant Shards (if you have Enchantrix installed it will show you on the toolbar).   For me I would rather have the confidence of an easy sale of Large Brilliant Shards than a small conversion of gold automatically.

Valor Points for our personal gold goblin conversion will be similar.  We're going to calculate how much it will put us over the limit after the conversion of Valor to Justice points.  Then purchase what
we can from Justice Points (please stay away from the raw materials purchase) and then sell on the open market.   With 30 days there will be time to make those sales and earn extra gold.

Automatic gold is nice,  but with a little travel and extra work we can go from easy gold to much more profitable gold.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Patching Up for 5.04

Hey Goblins,  it's Mommar.

Two more days of gameplay til it all changes again.  With Blizzard seemingly determined to make changes on a daily if not hourly basis,  gaming life is going to become fun.   A quick checklist of things to make sure you've taken care of before the server start and patching for 5.0.4

-    Convert all your Blackfallow Ink to other inks

The Ink converter at the home city (Orgrimmar/Stormwind) is going to be changing to the new conversion for ink (Starlight Ink).  So between Thursday's patch and the opening of the Pandaria gates Blackfallow Ink will be readily available.

-   DE or Vendor Relics and items used to craft them.

The Relic Slot disappears with Mists of Pandaria.   And any item that is slotted for the Relic Slot will become gray.

-  Hunters lose their melee weapon slots.

This will make one less outlet for those swords with agility on them (rogues) or maces.  So keep an eye on them in your inventory knowing you don't have poor hunters to sell too.   Also keep an eye on sellers who are looking to vendor these swords quickly.   They might not see the potential of sales to Rogues or even as Disenchant Fodder.

-  Keep your add-ons Updated.

This is a general rule whenever a patch is updated.  Many developers already have updates to their add-ons available for download.  Even after you have patched up the client make sure to download any updates.  No one likes to see error messages flash when they first log on.

-  Keep your ear to the boards and pages.

Wisdom is found in many places.  Not just on one site.   Little tidbits can be found that could be the difference between confusion and confidence.

-  Keep on buying and stockpiling materials.

I had to disappoint some because of technical problems I didn't get my list of things to save out.   There is still going to be 30+ days to save which will give you plenty of time.

-   Look at back entries on what to prep.

This is where your knowledge sets you ahead of the rest.  Got all your BOA gear ready to send to the new toon?  Got bags ready?   Got that Gnomish Army Knife ready to put across to the new kid in town?   The race starts the minute that your server comes online (expect delays as always).  On the right are the keywords that you can look for previous articles on.   Good reading while your downloading the patch.

-   Lose the Prime of your Glyph Life

One of the big announcements was a shuffling of the Prime slots and glyphs for Mists of Pandaria.  They will either become Major/Minor Glyphs with a few becoming faded Glyphs.   Your spell book will look different.   If you have been out of the Inscription market,  this is the perfect time to get started back in.  Glyphmas Part II should start with the new patch.   Having a large amount of preset glyphs will put you ahead of the game.

-   Get ready to have some fun.

The time between the opening patch and the beginning of an expansion is enjoyable.   There has been little talk of the world event that brings on an expansion pack.   Wrath of the Lich King gave us the Zombie Invasion.   Burning Crusade had the all out war in Azeroth.   Be ready to have some fun,  loot some items and spend some time with friends.

Good Luck and Good Hunting
