Mommar here.
One of the reasons I like enchanting items as an investment is simply because they are always in demand. Player demand is based on multiple ideas. Do I like what power this enchant gives me. Does this enchant go with the costume I've created (go go transmog players). Does this enchant have a super cool effect that
I like to see. All good reasons to get enchants, and even better reasons why people should buy your dust and your enchants.
Most dust (and essences) are going to sell simply based on where levelers are at. The Lower the level needed to craft/disenchant into dust, the less profit there will be. That was the general thinking up til now. Now we're running into an increased speed leveling, so many areas that were heavily used before will end up getting skipped. Areas such as Wintergrasp (level 55-58) and Shadowmoon Valley (67-70) are going to be either lightly played in or completely skipped.
So what does this do for enchanting materials? Items such as Arcane Dust and Infinite Dust are going to be not as available as they were before. Players burnt through their Infinite Dust supply quickly. Even now you see 4-6g per piece of dust. That will explode when you get players looking to level their enchants through Wrath crafting numbers (450-525). This is your bread and butter monies. The biggest hurdle is that the pricing of these dusts are already high. So finding deals will become more difficult as we get closer to MOP. Looking for items that fall into level 70-80 (for Arcane Dust ) and 80-85 (for Infinite Dust ) to DE into profits. When DEing wrath items remember, Weapons are more apt to provide you with Essences, Disenchanting Armor gives you more access to dust. Paying 9-15g an item could spot you a huge profit. This strategy isn't the safest and you could lose a tidy investment so be careful.
One strategy for enchanters is going to be Maelstrom Crystals from Cataclysm level epics. Where there will be next to zero demand for enchantments needed for these items. One saving grace that will pretty much guarantee profits. Enchanted Lanterns (or the Alliance equal Magic Lamp). These are going to be in high demand for pet battlers. Especially if you have the ability to send these over to the opposing side for resell. Where the investment can seem heavy at the beginning (Maelstrom Crystal at 80g a piece + Hypnotic Dust at 1-2g a piece). Just remember to buy the Maelstrom Crystal and shatter your own instead of buying the Heavenly Shards themselves.
Don't forget also many of the essence heavy enchants we talked about in MOP Prep: Enchanters Part 1. One of the big rare in demand essences comes from Greater Eternal Essence. This is one of those investments that is going to be tricky. The Greater Eternal Essences that are needed for the BOA enchants are in high demand already. Most players go quickly through the level 52-55 content so both the dust and essences provided from DE'ing these items are more difficult to find. Still picking these up and flipping them on the AH, or enchanting the BOA enchants will give you a good chance to make profit.
In all reality the only Enchanting item that isn't going to have a lot of profit is the low level dust from weapons and armor. Many new players will be dumping the armor and weapons from levels 1-10 on the AH for quick money. And the opening 50 points of Disenchanting are quickly gained from Enchanters Disenchanting their own items. This is the only investment I've stayed away from and just naturally acquired from Disenchanting leveled items from other toons.
As you can see Enchanting investment can be as easy or as difficult as you want it to be. If you low on funds look for high impact high turn around items. If your more adventurous spread your gold around and look at multiple areas for investment. Either way, there are profits to be made out there. Just keep your head above ground and ride the investment wave
